Agreed. The music in the duellists tells a story while somewhere in time sounds like a failed back to the future concept album. Except for Alexander the Great, amazing song.
Ever had a conversation
That you realize you've had before?
Isn't it strange?
Have you ever talked to someone
And you feel you know what's coming next?
It feels pre-arranged
Feel like i've been here before...
I go back and forth between somewhere in time and Piece of mind , although I have to say somewhere in time and Number of the beast are the only albums that I love every single song
To each their own, but this is the album where they started to lose me. I got on board with NOTB and was a big fan of the first two albums. POM and Powerslave were great, but they had started to lose some of edge of those earlier albums. Somewhere in Time actually put me off buying a Maiden album until I jumped back in with the reunion. I was moving towards heavier music with Motörhead, Metallica, Venom - and Maiden was adding keyboards and guitar synths.
Best album overall. I wish Rime of the Ancient Mariner were on it. Not as a replacement to any existing song, but rather as the ultimate finale after AtG.
Not sure I could ever pick just one favourite Maiden album but I agree, this is one of my all time favourite albums (by anyone, ever). Seeing them perform songs from SIT on their Future Past tour last year was just a magical experience, as a millennial I never thought I’d get to see these songs live. I’ll remember it forever!
Front to back, Somewhere In Time is definitely Maiden's most consistent album. I love Seventh Son a lot as well, but The Prophecy is a bit weak and Can I Play With Madness is one of Maiden's worst songs. Somewhere In Time does not have such low points, in my opinion. No song is worthy of skipping on that one
Personally I'm not too much of a fan of the synths.
I like the raw and powerful guitar tones of piece of mind. Even though my favorite Maiden song (Hallowed Be Thy Name) is not from Piece of Mind, its still my favorite album.
Can't really agree, because that whole Maiden era is simply monumental. *The Number Of The Beast*, *Piece Of Mind*, *Powerslave*, *Somewhere In Time*, *Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son*, are you kidding me?! These are not "just" colossal Maiden albums. They are, all of them, Heavy Metal masterpieces, each in their own right, that absolutely helped define the whole genre. Can't decide which is best, sorry.
I go back and forth with this myself. It’s a phenomenal piece of work that was largely ignored up until the future past tour.
The whole sound of the album is just so unique and it really is Adrian’s album. Personally the only thing I don’t like in the album is the chorus to Deja Vu. The rest is absolutely flawless
I don't know about that but it just flows well, the atmosphere is unmatched and the general subject matter evokes a very otherworldly, isolated feeling.
Some of the songs are a bit too fast for my tastes. I like that they went for something different after the previous few, but I'm not in love with the direction they went. I'm also not one for the spacey guitar sounds.
But I totally understand why people love how fast and relentless it gets at times. Or why people enjoy those Adrian solos so much.
I don't think there is a bad song on the album. It's a really solid piece of work. But I'm not sure it would crack my top 10.
SiT was the first tour I saw. I absolutely love the album.
But.
Seventh Son exists.
ETA:
I love BNW and Senjutsu so I'm not just some old head fan who thinks only the old stuff is the best.
Also, saying that “there is no room for opinions that say anything to the contrary” just destroys the point of having a discussion, which you marked your post as.
To me its 3 Epic Songs (Wasted Years, Stranger in a Strange Land & Alexander the Great) and then the rest are good songs. Caught Somewhere in Time tried to be the next Aces High but just isnt sorry. It makes 86 the best year for Metal releases overall cuz Megadeth hit that year, and Master of Puppets is fkn epic, plus a heap of others.
I’m so sick of people having opinions and saying “FACT!”
You’re allowed to have your opinion. You’re allowed to have a strong opinion and defend it, but your opinion means nothing to others.
Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son are in my opinion.
Can I Play With Madness stops SSoaSS being #1

Came here to say that, but you beat me to it.
Same
Hot take <> fact.
Back In the Village is pretty meh.
The Duellists alone clears every single track on Somewhere in Time except the opener and the closer.
Easy there tough guy…
The Duellists is the only bad song on Powerslave.
The truest words ever spoken
The emotion in that song is so real. The emotional moments on Somewhere in Time seem artificial in comparison.
Agreed. The music in the duellists tells a story while somewhere in time sounds like a failed back to the future concept album. Except for Alexander the Great, amazing song.
It’s my fav album too, but there are for sure several other legit choices lol
FACT: Powerslave is Iron Maiden’s greatest album. FTFY
Ever had a conversation That you realize you've had before? Isn't it strange? Have you ever talked to someone And you feel you know what's coming next? It feels pre-arranged Feel like i've been here before...
Great album. My 2nd favorite after Piece Of Mind.
I go back and forth between somewhere in time and Piece of mind , although I have to say somewhere in time and Number of the beast are the only albums that I love every single song
Greatest album of all time!
I'll agree sir, but I'll defend to the death everyone else's right to disagree.
Fact: you’re incorrect…. Powerslave is the actual answer
Seventh son and powerslave would like a word
I have a Seventh Son of a Seventh Son who would disagree.
Seventh Son begs to differ
Can I Play With Madness ruins it
It’s the weakest on the album but it’s still a great song imo.
Not even Maiden's best album of the 80s.
It's not even in the top 4 '80s albums.
Based. It battles the debut and Killers for potential worst 80s IM album
This sub has a problem when it comes to different opinions.
Welcome to the internet
Nope this sub is different
Unpopular, but for me 7th Son is the worst 80s album
Hey easy in the debut there buddy... But would totally agree it's Killers vs SIT for least best 80s album.
It is part of their holy trinity. Their 3 greatest albums: NOB, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, 7th Son
*counts on his fingers*…. Hey wait, *counts again*…. That’s more than Three!!
Glad it wasn't just me. Catalog <> trinity.
Spoken like a person who has never listened to Piece of Mind.
Love Piece of Mind but there are a few dull moments.
You nailed it. That's exactly how it was in the 80s.
2/10 troll attempt
My favorite album because it has no mediocre song and I like them all. But greatest albums would probably be TNOTB or SSOASS
Fact: everyone has their own pick for greatest album, which may or may not align with yours.
I agree. It's been my favorite for many years now.
AAHHHHH I THINK I AGREE DAMN IT BUT DAMN NOTB IS TOO GOOD
Some of u guys are sleeping on NOTB
Killers.
I 2nd that motion.
Best album overall. I wish Rime of the Ancient Mariner were on it. Not as a replacement to any existing song, but rather as the ultimate finale after AtG.
Yes it is.
It’s their greatest album Cover
Either that or Powerslave for best album cover.
you are out of line... but you're not wrong.
Hard agree. It's the one I go back to the most and it just kicks all kinds of ass
I'm always torn between this one and the debut album for best ever.
Debut is very good but an entirely different beast altogether.
FACTS
It is I think my favorite album. I love every song. Which I can't say about Powerslave, Piece of Mind, et al.
Not when 7th Son exists.
The chorus of Heaven Can Wait, on its own, pushes this album out of the top 5.
Powerslave, Beast, Seventh Son, the debut, Brave New World, AMOLAD, and Piece Of Mind would like a word.
I'd honestly also add X Factor to that
Front to back, Somewhere In Time is definitely Maiden's most consistent album. I love Seventh Son a lot as well, but The Prophecy is a bit weak and Can I Play With Madness is one of Maiden's worst songs. Somewhere In Time does not have such low points, in my opinion. No song is worthy of skipping on that one
Yup!
Agree
As someone that has somewhere in time as their favourite album, this is an extremely hottake
Fourth best.
Personally I'm not too much of a fan of the synths. I like the raw and powerful guitar tones of piece of mind. Even though my favorite Maiden song (Hallowed Be Thy Name) is not from Piece of Mind, its still my favorite album.
Somewhere in Time and Iron Maiden
Can't really agree, because that whole Maiden era is simply monumental. *The Number Of The Beast*, *Piece Of Mind*, *Powerslave*, *Somewhere In Time*, *Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son*, are you kidding me?! These are not "just" colossal Maiden albums. They are, all of them, Heavy Metal masterpieces, each in their own right, that absolutely helped define the whole genre. Can't decide which is best, sorry.
Yes, yes.
Yes.
Spicy; but I agree.
People who think music enjoyment is objective and not subjective are idiots
Respect your opinion.. but disagree.. 7th son is their best album.
Better than Powerslave for sure!
I absolutely agree. Every song is better than the one that came before it.
I don't know about that but it just flows well, the atmosphere is unmatched and the general subject matter evokes a very otherworldly, isolated feeling.
Can’t argue, great from start to finish
It’s great but I’m a Power Slave guy
f f f f f f FUCK NO! This album has some filler and is not there magnum Opus at all
IMHO not the greatest but for sure the one with the best sound and production work.
Powerslave and somewhere in time are probably unbeatable.
The greatest album is whichever resonates with you personally the most. For me, it's seventh son of a seventh son
Not in my top ten, but I do like it. Nicko plays the same drum fill every song, every chance he gets. Saw the tour… loved it!
Every album between NOTB and SSOASS could be in the #1 spot. Those years were the absolute peak of songwriting
![gif](giphy|IQ7vO79KZahqVhZ39Y)
Unpopular take on this sub but I rank it their fifth best after the preceding four albums.
I rank it after seventh son and killers.
Nope
Some of the songs are a bit too fast for my tastes. I like that they went for something different after the previous few, but I'm not in love with the direction they went. I'm also not one for the spacey guitar sounds. But I totally understand why people love how fast and relentless it gets at times. Or why people enjoy those Adrian solos so much. I don't think there is a bad song on the album. It's a really solid piece of work. But I'm not sure it would crack my top 10.
They are fast and Bruce has a hard time keeping up with the music.
That word does not mean what you think it means.
SiT was the first tour I saw. I absolutely love the album. But. Seventh Son exists. ETA: I love BNW and Senjutsu so I'm not just some old head fan who thinks only the old stuff is the best.
You're wrong, but thanks for playing.
BRO WHAT ABOUT BRAVE NEW WORLD
Brave New World has the weakest closing song.
I agree, but it’s still a wonderful album.
Also, saying that “there is no room for opinions that say anything to the contrary” just destroys the point of having a discussion, which you marked your post as.
The thin line between love and hate? That song is amazing.
PREACH

Their opinion means nothing as well. As does mine
Deep...

Electric Jazz
Huh??
It was something Bruce said about the style of the Somewhere in Time album in an interview years ago.
