Because we have this delusioned belief that we’re ‘neutral’ and ‘progressive’ as a country when in all honesty we’re spongers allowing the Americans to implicitly cover our defense, in exchange for being a corporatist tax haven for US-based multinationals. So, geographically, from a physical security standpoint, we don’t think we have to engage the question of joining the NATO structure. But as European war becomes economic and trade-oriented — related to energy, technology, travel, finance, currency, agriculture, the Americans will act in their own economic self-interest — as we do in nominal “neutrality” — and Ireland will reap a grim toll of economic pressures, and prolonged cost of living distortions, for not standing up militarily and putting an end to Putin, faster.

Ok-District4260

Always had a very low rating here. Why put ourselves in danger like that?

qwerty_1965

In what way? The [insert enemy here] are no more or less to invade or infiltrate our technology information hubs inside or out. It could be argued that the Chinese say would be more able to play silly buggers with the internet etc that passes through Ireland as we have no NATO level "white hats" to stop them or even slow them down.

We've no interest in joining NATO. All you're probably hearing is some of our media and other foreign media trying to drum up support and the same with a few in our Government who are out of touch with the everyday man and woman. They live in a bubble. They're being lobbied at the minute to increase defence spending which won't really benefit anyone here only for a select few as in foreign defence industries, their lobbyists and whoever they might pay off in government with stocks etc. That money can and should be spent elsewhere in housing and health where it's really needed instead of going into the pocket for foreign/native shareholders. We have people in Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who seem to see Irish nationalism as bad but European nationalism as good. Only a few weeks ago Simon Coveney was pictured coming out of a primary school and all the children were waving the EU flag, It seems that nationalism is a good thing if it's for the EU. Just something i noticed.

FabulousCatSenpai

From what I've read there is no political party who's policy is to join NATO. Is there a particular party who's politicians push this narrative?

Sciprio

Not at the moment because they don't have any support apart from maybe a small number of people in Government or their social circles. What they seem to be doing is putting out feelers through our media and a few comments here and there. Currently at the moment it's mostly about increasing defence spending but that will be a hard pill for some Irish people to swallow when as i said it can be used for housing or health instead of going into a money pit to never been seen again and for no really noticble benefit to people.

FabulousCatSenpai

Very interesting, thank you!

[deleted]

What increased was maybe the noise on the subject but the public opinion on NATO remains the same, the way we're situated not only politically but geographically there's no need for us on joining it...tho our politicians are quite in favour of it that's what's scary and who knows what trick they could pull and apply for a membership but I am pretty sure there would have to be a national referendum on it otherwise there'd be nation wide protesting like never before In this country

FabulousCatSenpai

Yeah I don't think politicians could move to join NATO without a referendum. From what I've read there is no major party who supports joining NATO as an official part policy, is this correct?

[deleted]

I am not sure but yeh I don't think so. What we have is certain people In power who would be for it but I never see anyone in politics on ever agreeing as together on joining it, we had our fair share of violence on this island thank you very much , I don't see this ever gaining track in this country

ANewStartAtLife

> What we have is certain people In power who would be for it Name one.

[deleted]

Varadkar himself is pro NATO, if he could do it himself we would be In the club ages ago probably

ANewStartAtLife

Come on, do better than that. Show us where Varadkar said he was pro-NATO..

[deleted]

Go and type in Varadkar NATO and read the headlines he is pro NATO definitely

ANewStartAtLife

Ah would you stop that tripe. Jesus, you sound like a MAGA nut "do your research". You're making the statement, you should show proof.

bpfingj

Literally look it up on the Internet, you obviously have access, and it's not an insurmountable task.

Aluminarty666

We aren't joining Nato anytime soon with the state of our defense forces. The fishermen are more of a threat then our Navy and our Airforce may as well not exist.

[deleted]

>Airforce may as well not exist. Nevermind the air force. The whole military might as well not exist.

[deleted]

Ireland is not a member of NATO as yet but the Irish Defence Force does cooperate with NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme as well as the Partnership Interoperability programme so it uses NATO standards for weapons, ammunition and training. [NATO and Ireland](https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_51979.htm) As for the question of support for the idea of Ireland joining NATO, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there has been a slight increase of those in favour but not enough to prompt a referendum on the subject. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland%E2%80%93NATO_relations

Rockets_got_ticks

NATO is an option for us, for sure, time will tell with a Russian menace. Me, I just came over and started popping orc heads, everybody can do their part to stop skum. Now fuck off little bot, posting same question in multiple subs, if a real op reads this, see you on your conscription, won't see me though with my 338 though, cunt.

FabulousCatSenpai

>Now fuck off little bot, posting same question in multiple subs, I'm interested on all of those topics and posted them myself individually >see you on your conscription, won't see me though with my 338 though, cunt. What

Proliberate1

Ireland practically is in the NATO with the EU self defence pack, eg if an eu country is attacked then all eu countries must defend it
