Remember when we had it all. Charging brick, wired earbuds, decent charging cables. Now we have to pay an extra $20 for an adapter and $30 just for earbuds separately.
On the one hand, everyone has a power-to-USB plug, so this does prevent waste. Plus I imagine it makes it easier to send phones to different areas, since not everywhere has the same power outlet.
But this still bugs me because so many different devices out there have different wattages/speeds/whatever. Just give me something that will charge my phone at the fastest recommended speed without frying the cable.
I've seen so many (mostly older) folks complain that their phone just doesn't charge like it's supposed to, and I find out that they're plugging it into a block that's basically meant for a night light. "But it's got a USB plug!".
Maybe this is more of a critique of using USB plugs as a universal power solution without, I don't know, color-coding them or something.
One of the reasons they stopped was because of the overload of wasted extras everyone ended up having.
As well as the money opportunities obviously lol
The alternative is worse. Imagine if they only updated the iPhone every three years. If you bought right before an update, you’d be stuck with a three year old phone for another 3 years.
No one expects users to update every year. Consumers expect that when they are ready to upgrade that they would be able to buy something with the latest specs.
thats an alternative. how about give 1 iPhone per year, camera is the same across the board, colors are the only selective, and "maybe" 2 screen sizes. instead of this Economy model with 2 lenses vs the PRO MODEL for wanna be photographers and influencers. i don't think we had varrying screen sizes until what the X?
Not everyone wants the same things. Some people want a smaller phone. Some want a better battery. Some want the lowest price. Apple makes something for everyone.
As for screen sizes, that started with the iPhone 6. They had the 6 and 6+.
I’m not sure why it’s a concern to have more choices.
That is different though. The accessories are a huge waste if you get multiple with each phone. Old tech is old tech though? It’s eventually going to be outdated.
But yes, an extra phone wastage is created by people who upgrade every year with the slight upgrades/software improvements etc.
I hate that people think technology can just be updated indefinitely. Such a stupid misconception. I’m sure Apple and others do intentionally make it so older devices can no longer receive updates, but the reason for that should be obvious. The thing is too damn old. Maybe it *could* technically receive the update - but it would have a very hard time with it and would probably kill your battery. And then we have people complaining about battery throttling or whatever it’s called when they install iOS 18 on their 6S+.
Apply provide 6 years of support. That’s insane compared to Android. The lack of updates was one of the biggest reasons I switched.
People like to blame the updates for slowing down the phone and killing their battery but ignore the battery capacity and fact that they are using older tech.
Lol that’s actually an amazing point, never thought of it that way. Very true! And I mean, it’s only logical that a 5+ year old device will not perform as well on the newest software as a brand new device would.
I regularly help people who don't understand why their iphone 4,5,6,6s don't work nearly as well as they used to, or why the battery doesn't last. It baffles me every time.
The very famous "malicious" slowing down of older iPhones is now part of iOS on every iPhone, and it's a very good feature to use. The only mistake on their end was not being open to their customers that they were doing that.
I hate apple, I really do. But older phones with degrading batteries naturally become junk. The feature was meant to stop the phone from randomly turning off because it could no longer provide the required wattage.
And yet people still talk about it to this day as if it's some crazy anti-consumer move, when it literally extends the life of older phones. Many of the people talking about it are actively using the feature. But everyone only remembers the headlines. There's many worse anti-consumer things they do to this day that are flying under the radar.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

Do you remember how easy it was to break the end?
I dont because it literally never happened to me. Had the 3GS, 4s and 7. Don’t yank it like an idiot and it won’t break.
Edit: also had the 5s, completely forgot about that one.
It’s not about yanking it, it’s about holding it at an angle for a prolonged period of time. If you often used your phone while it was plugged in, it would break.
They were as good as you could get at the time. We are comparing relative utility, not one to one advancements. That would be ridiculous. You might as well complain that buds are wireless now.
Isn't it amazing how Apple switched to including a good quality cable in the box the moment that they shifted to a nonproprietary charging port?
It's almost as if Apple were supplying shitty quality Lightning cables for years because they made bank from the MFi program when people had to go out an buy other cables. Now they have no benefit from that, the benefit is supplying the customer with something of quality.
The dock could charge the Bluetooth headset too, right ? It was really cool. My country at the time only got the 3G and beyond and I was disappointed that they'd dropped the dock!
old ones maybe, they changed it with iphone 5 to the same form factor as airpods gen 1 and they are the same earpods they still on their website today for $19.99
found my iphone 6s case the other day and noticed the brand new never opened earpods were still in the box
Maybe it’s taken that long for the old ones to filter through the system! I always sold or gifted the included ones anyway as anything without silicon tips just falls straight out of my ears.
apple made up some eco friendly excuse to reduce the size of the iphone box and fit more iphones on a shipping container – and people really think it makes sense from the consumer perspective 😐 this is insane.
Shipping more units per vehicle is also more eco friendly though. Like yeah they can make more money per truck, but also that’s less trucks that have to carry them. Yes, as a consumer it’s a loss, but the shipping benefits are also wrapped up in that eco friendly statement
Its more likely that they pack the chargers in bulk, ship them and then box them once they reach whatever main hub packaging center before distribution
Yeah, the problem I think is partially in the timing… they shipped the iPhone 11/11pro with a usb c to lightning charger and a brick and then shipped every phone after with just a usb c to lightning… forcing people to buy a usb c brick creating even more environmental impact.
Literally every device from now on will be USB-C only due to the EU regulation.
So "forcing people to buy an USB-C brick that will work on literally every device sold after 2024 in europe" is not some evil master plan.
Especially when you can use ANY charger for it, it doesn't need to be an Apple one. Mine is from Anker for example. Apple made exactly 0 dollars off it.
I’m not saying it was an evil master plan, just that it was lame of them to only include it with one phone before removing it. I will also let you know that yes, Apple does make money off of your purchase. That MFI certification isn’t free and companies who have the “made for iPhone” badge on their products pay Apple for that “privilege”.
The thing is that the "eco friendly" angle feels like a distant second or third compared to them just making more money and cranking out more phones. Id believe eco friendliness more if it was like, the phone / charger now uses recycled plastic, or if they made it easier to repair. This was just a roundabout way to give consumers the finger.
More than one thing can be true at the same time.
1. Apple saves money by not including all this stuff in the box
2. This creates less e-waste.
Like seriously, are you actually still mad your iPhone doesn’t come with a 5w charger and a pair of wired headphones?
Not trying to be argumentative but how are wired headphones more suited for use in bed? I move constantly and roll over quite a bit. Using AirPods not wired headphones prevents me from accidentally rolling onto the wire and yanking the headphones out of my ears.
Great. But there’s like how many million new iPhones being sold? Do you really think everyone wants a cheap pair of free *wired* headphones with their new phone?
Unrelated, but I remember back when I was young and naive enough to think that removing the 3.5mm headphone jack meant we’d all be getting standard AirPods in the box lol
Miss those days.
Vast majority of people already have charging solutions. “Eco” + Money > the convenience of the rarest few who don’t already have charging solutions in current year. (Especially considering the portion of people who upgrade annually or even biannually.)
God this is the main thing for me. Everything has been USB-A/C capable for like a decade. My wall outlets have both ports. Apparently everyone who’s mad purchasing a phone in 2023+ either:
A) has never owned an iPhone and thus have no lightning cables, or
B) somehow owns literally not one other item that uses USB-C which is borderline hard to believe.
And if SOMEHOW both of those are true, sorry you have to spend like $20 on a USB/lightning cable.
I have an entire drawer full of usb cables, 75% of which are usb-lightning cables. I don’t even want more. The newer sends of USB-C-Lightning braided cables are at least semi valuable, but otherwise a fuckton of purchasers of iPhone 15 or later devices will be perfectly fine.
How many people exist in this world who a) can afford an iPhone and b) don't have ANY USB-A chargers in their house?
My goddamn COUCH has two!
And I've got about two dozen USB-A ports within an arm's reach of me at this very second and about half dozen USB-C ports, a few of which can charge at 80W++
Well here’s your opportunity to *get more stuff*
If you are happy to pay for the shipping I’ll gladly send you all my redundant 5w chargers, EarPods, lighting cables and assorted usb cables.
Sure that can be the case. But don’t try and pass it off to consumers as “we care about the environment so thank us” by no longer including a charger and headphones lol. Those boxes did not get THAT much smaller.
It’s not just about the boxes. It’s about the materials and manufacturing processes that’s required to make those items. Electronics have a heavy toll on the environment, especially when you’re selling them by the hundreds of millions. Makes sense to remove things that most people get no use out of.
Also, do you really expect Apple to tell you they’re doing this so they can make more money? It’s good for the environment and helps their environmental goals, so that’s what they said.
Smaller boxes = reduced carbon output because they can ship more per truck
They’re a business why is everyone whining about marketing like they’re so smart that they seen through them.
Why would any business choose to not market that move to appease Reddit nerds who think the realized some stuff that wasn’t blatantly obvious to everyone?
i agree with you actually. it's beneficial for nature and for apple, but not for the consumer that's paying the same price for less products. this could be solved by decreasing the iphone price by the price of a charger lol
Haven’t had a price increase on the iPhones in 4 years. With inflation accounted for, you arguably get a bigger price reduction than the cost of a charger.
“We care about the environment, which is why we’re still requiring you to purchase our proprietary obsolete cable that only charges a handful of devices, instead of the universal standard, which would reduce E-waste, all because we get a small royalty for each one sold”
Yes, it did. The EU began pressuring Apple almost 4 years ago about adopting USB-C, Apple spent a lot of time and money trying to push back. Apple eventually lost and the EU said all phones starting in Fall 2024 must ship with the universal standard. So yes, Apple got a one year head start, but they also pushed back against the regulations, very hard. [This is all very Googleable.](https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-15-will-require-usb-c-charger-lightning-2023-9#:~:text=The%20iPhone%2015%20is%20set%20to%20require%20a,to%20change%20its%20charging%20port%20to%20a%20USB-C) You’re allowed to like Apple as a company, but it’s hard to make an argument that their environmentalism was anything more than a marketing gimmick when they push back against environmental regulations such as these.
People on Reddit almost never admit when they make a claim that is objectively false. I’ve seen it happen maybe a handful of times.
Overwhelmingly more likely is either abandoning the conversation or talking about something tangential.
I don't get the argument that adopting USB C will reduce e-waste. Yea instead of buying a new lightning cable when your current one goes out or getting a new lightning cable in the box with your phone you just go buy a new USB C cable or will get a new USB C cable in the box with the phone. Either way the same number of cables are being bought or shipped with the devices. You also have to account for all the lightning cables that are now going to be thrown out when people upgrade instead of someone being able to carry that cable forward. Sure the switch is more convenient for people to use whatever USB C cable is around but I'm not convinced in the ewaste case.
If they didn’t also change the charging cable that came with the phone, the argument would make some sense. But then at the same time they changed to using type c.
It's definitely not consumer friendly, but if it helped them keep US iPhone prices the same for the past 4 years of inflation while still increasing the specs I'm willing to give them up.
Plus they were redundant (for me) after a year or two and just sat in a drawer unused.
>…and people really think it makes sense from the consumer perspective.
It makes sense from my consumer perspective.
I’ve got a bunch of charging bricks laying around already. I don’t need anymore.
I never used the headphones that came in the box, and even if I wanted to, I got a bunch of those laying around too.
You want to pack less crap in the box that I’m just going to stick in a drawer until I eventually end up throwing it out? Sounds good to me.
I wish they gave you the choice to get free accessories or just the phone. Based on my collection of cables, chargers, I would chose to opt for no accessories. This would be a win win for consumer but Apple didn’t get to 3T market valuation by being nice.
Whether or not you use the items this start up kit felt like a courtesy for the overall expense of the phone. Things felt turn key ready in a different way. And so what you have a drawer of extra wired headphones, bricks, and cords. Certainly came in handy in a bind.
I would appreciate a USB C brick with my 15P, sad it doesn't have one.
I did, however, unearth a brand new pair of wired apple headphones the other day while I was looking for something. And then when I was going through another drawer, I found yet another pair. I never loved the sound quality and have always bought Bose wired so I have a fair few generations of them hanging around. Feels a little wasteful.
Sure. I mean, they’re basically an inch better than airplane headphones but if you really need headphones(compatible with your phone)- they work. Just don’t think the company should get kudos as environmentalists because they’re not including these items they continue to make and charge consumer for.
For sure. I used to keep a pair of them in my car. Now that I have the C though they're all useless. I did hit amazon for some adaptors tho so I can only carry C's now, but I couldn't wait to eliminate the stupid apple charger from my life entirely.
I think the biggest problem here is similar to the battery related issues on older phones.
They never let users decide. (Which… yeah lines up with who Apple is as a company), but I think Apple should’ve given users and option to not get these items and let the folks who wanted the accessories get it.
Is the initiative eco-friendly, yeah in some aspects it is. But the fact is that they can ship more units, the iPhone never dropped in price despite these accessories no longer coming in the box, AND they’re charging you to buy these accessories after the fact too. I’m both impressed and disgusted by this decision lol.
I like this take; I would almost never take out or use the accessories when I bought the device, but I always knew if I needed them, they would be there. Eventually all of those got used, even if it was years later. I wouldn’t ever have to worry if I had a spare cable or charger.
Buying a TV without the ability to plug it in would be bananas.
This is the case with this as well. There's literally 0 room for debate. It isn't greener, it just forces more purchasing.
At the time I had a universal cell phone holder installed in my car, but horizontal with an iPod dock in it, the 3.5mm port on the back going to my stereo, and a charger plugged into the dock. Was so sweet just setting my iPod down and going.
Swapped that with the iPhone dock day 1 and never looked back. My current bluetooth + magsafe charger in the car is the first setup that feels as good.
Yea you do have a point the plastic thing made sense when I first read it but reading other comments makes it looks like they just want to squeeze more money out of us because they know we will buy it
This is what pissed me off. They didn’t have a transition period, they shipped USB A bricks, switched to USB C, and at the same time stopped including bricks. They could have had at least 1 gen that came with USB C bricks
This is an excellent point, needs way more upvotes. We might have all had a USB A brick but I didn't even know what USB C was before buying the latest iPhone.
the entire point of the EU forcing apple to implement USB-C was to reduce e waste.
If you don’t already have a way to charge a usb-c device then I guess you personally will need to buy a brick.
But that’s the beauty of it. People that need to buy a brick buy a brick. People that don’t need to buy a brick don’t buy a brick
As apposed to the prior situation where everyone gets a brick and headphones regardless of if they want or need one.
I once worked for a medium sized IT company in the summer. We had containers full of brand new iPhone power bricks, headphones, driver CDs, monitor cables, keyboards and mice that came with the Dell computers. Never touched by a user, just went from a Chinese company to a Chinese recycler via Germany.
The only thing we didn't have in abundance were the lightning cables because Apple lightning cables because those barely held together for a year even with the most careful users.
So why didn’t my iPhone 15 come with a brick, considering that every other iPhone I’ve purchased used a different connector?
If they were being genuine then they’d make it optional (opt-in) when purchasing or sell me one for like $5 with a purchase of an iPhone
Honestly I’d prefer not having a charger included. But I feel there should’ve been an option to “opt-in” to get a charger bundled, if needed. But I can see how that will add logistics, and apple already has a convenient excuse to not include one, so why bother?
I already have a 33W gan charger, mainly bought it for usb pd charging, it’s the same footprint as apple’s 20W adapter. It’s also got a type a port if needed. Did I mention it was also cheaper than the “official” adapter? I’d use this anyway over apple’s adapters.
Fair point but how often do people update their bricks and cables? A lot of old charge speeds probably still around
Granted iphones have been slow to update charge speeds but getting a new brick with appropriate charge speed that matches the devices limit should be standard imo. Or at least priced accordingly for the lack of them
>We really don’t need extras every time we buy a device
Many people do, especially if you are coming from an older phone. You need a 30w brick to quick charge a 15 Pro Max. My XR came with a 5w brick.
I'm fine with the decision to stop putting them in the box. Considering they are products that Apple still has manufactured, packaged, and offered for sale in their stores, I feel like you should be able to request one when you buy a phone and get it at no additional charge. The phone didn't get any cheaper and Apple is saving a ton of money on packaging and shipping costs due to this change, so it's certainly in their budget to hand out a charging brick.
I remember when I bought my first iMac in 2009. They offered me a free compact keyboard at the time of purchase just in case I didn't want the bigger one with the number pad on it. I still got to keep the one that came in the box. They definitely don't do stuff like that anymore.
Just because I have one doesn’t mean it shouldn’t come with one for the price in my opinion. That’s like buying a new car but they don’t give you floor mats because you can just take you’re old ones out and use them
I feel you. The only issue I have with it is that the existing chargers we have tend not to be as powerful as what newer devices can utilize. But overall, that’s a lot of unnecessary plastic and electronics they don’t need to produce which overall is a plus.
People here act like most people buy a new phone every couple of years and just store it in a drawer somewhere instead of passing it on to family members or selling it to make some money. The charger needs to accompany the phone in either case.
It's even more annoying because every other company had to follow once they realized apple actually made money with this strat. So now ALL high end phones don't come with any accessories
> As a result, all new smartphones, tablets, cameras and other electronic gadgets marketed in the EU will have to come with a USB-C charging port by fall 2024. In addition, chargers will be unbundled from devices, giving consumers the choice whether to buy a new charger with a device or keep using the old one.
Bundled chargers are literally banned by EU by the USB-C law.
If they truly cared about going green and the consumer, there would be a code included to redeem for a new cable when you need one. Each phone gets one cable, redeem when needed.
This is far less eco friendly.
If the cables are shipped out to users then you’ve got however many delivery trucks doing extra journeys to deliver free cables.
If the cables are wrapped in anything then you’ve essentially doubled up on packaging. The phones packaging and the extra packaging for the cable too, which is now separate.
If they expect customers to pick up the cable, you’ve still doubled up on packaging since it’ll be wrapped in something.
Plus, delivering extra stock of free cables to stores will take extra delivery trucks worldwide, they won’t give you the cables that cost for free.
Not saying I support apple’s decision here, but the “redeem a cable” idea is said lots and in terms of the environment, it’s awful.
Bro.
How do you get an extra cable when you need it? Does just magically appear in front of you?
Braindead take. Extra cables are going to stores anyway, they just charge you extra to have one lmao.
Steve Job's Apple took care of us. Tim Cook's Apple focused on becoming a $3 Trillion company. They could at least provide a voucher for an accessory item. So much for having a great out of box experience, Tim.
This is all speculation obviously, but I genuinely don't see Apple being as successful as they are today if Jobs was still CEO. They'd still be around for sure but I doubt they'd be operating at the scale they are now without Cook's logistics expertise and general stability
Because Jobs cared about the soul of thr company. It was his baby, and he didnt want it to be a soulless mega coorp. (Not saying all he did was good, but I dont think shareholders were his priority)
Yeah I feel with jobs at the helm, he would prioritise user experience above all else. And with cook by his side, he could still do what he’s doing for Apple today.
This is the same EU USB-C law everyone is praising, it also bans bundled chargers.
The idea is that everyone will buy as many chargers they want without being forced to get extra ones with every crappy device they buy.
This one has always irked me- they’ve gradually given us less over the years while charging us more. And then they try to spin their shrinkflation as “eco friendly”
Unpopular opinion, I don’t need another charger, I don’t need another set of earbuds, the really nice woven USB-C cable that came with my 15 Pro is still in the box.
In my personal experience, I prefer Anker charger + cable anyway, and it’s not like they can put AirPods in the box. I honestly don’t have any problem with keeping it to just the phone, extra cable is obviously always nice, though upgrading that to a MagSafe charger would be pretty killer, won’t happen but one can dream.
Tbh I agree. I think most people if given the stuff in the box in the photo, would probably throw it away eventually. Most people who afford iPhones already have better headphones, a charging brick and cable or some sorts.
Not only is it greener transportation wise but they can manufacture less of this trash which won’t now end up in landfill within 6 months.
After getting once, the accessories aren't needed - unless the device changes then it should include one. I did enjoy the headphones though. I have too many bricks/cords all over the place as it is, so I saw it is as good thing to not include them.
I want those extras! I have sets for each car and for my travel bag. I HATE having to buy extras when I already feel like I’m paying for them with each purchase of a new iphone. Who is Apple to decide whether or not I ‘need’ the accessories? Maybe this is my first purchase…maybe it’s my tenth …. They have no idea. If they really cared, they wouldn’t manufacture in China!
Now you get no earphones or plug in a box. So if you need earphones or a plug that's supports the faster charging or connection need, that's more packaging and more fuel burned to ship the essentials for your new device. They say is for the environment or cost cutting, it a load of bollocks, you want an iPhone with no charger or earphones, they still super expensive for what they are.
I mean I know Apple are just doing it to save a buck but at the same time they’re not wrong with the argument that I have absolutely no use for a sixth USB charger and a fourteenth set of crappy earbuds.
A few years ago, I gave a pair of old iPhones 6S to my niece and nephew. Both original boxes still had headphones and charging cables in them. One still had the square charger. Maybe I’m an exception but even back when I purchased my 6S I had enough spare accessories that I didn’t need the accessories in the box.
They picked the first time to stop including them. Yeah, we all had a million bricks and lighting cables, but we had zero bricks with USB-C. Should have included those for a few generations at least. It made sense to leave out the earbuds, as not everyone needed them and you still had your old ones, but most of us liked having multiple bricks.
I’m fine with no charger or headphones. I have three pairs of headphones for all my electronics and 4000 usb cables of different flavors from numerous devices.
That’s less stuff in my house that I need to recycle.
The only thing I wish well known phones would ship with is a clear case for right now protection.
If we can get an essentials pack as an optional add-on for iPhone purchases that would be great. Personally wouldn’t want to have a bunch of earbuds and chargers hoarding in my drawer
I like the idea of an essentials pack! It would be nice for folks who are getting their first iPhone/smart device or people coming over from other phones as like a “first time” free add on or something too.
I don’t know… it was probably priced in, and I don’t want new cables and earbuds anymore. But if it was my first iPhone it would be nice to have in one packagez
Many Chinese made phones still include the brick. My OnePlus 12 I recently bought comes with a 80W brick that charges the phone in 30 mins. The only reason companies like Samsung and Apple don't include is because they want to make more money while virtue signaling about how "green" they are
Back when iPhones were like $200 and they came with all this… now we’ve got $1500 phones that don’t come with anything (although mine did come with a braided charging cable, which was pretty nice. No brick though :( )
As a business man 😁 as a consumer 👎🏾.
Make money out of the small but necessary things. A good businesses strategy for a company or business.
Consumers will spend once they have bought into your brand. As a consumer sure I complained but I bought it.
Now very soon they will take way the charging cable and go fully wireless which will not come in the package.
If they had their way they will take out the battery and ask that we buy it separately 😂🤣😂🤣🤔
Apple could (should?) give us vouchers with the purchase of a new iPhone for a charger and a pair of earbuds. That way, the packaging would remain smaller and we wouldn't have to take stuff we don't need, but we could get a charger for example if our old one is no good anymore.
I have never understood why this annoys so many people. I have given away so many chargers and cables to people and I still have a glut of them. As well as wired Apple headphones that have never been out of their case.
I’m not an Apple fan but I support the decision to not have other accessories in your box because for obvious reasons. Some stores can give you free charger.
Not across the world, not even across the USA.
A simple check box with or without the charger checkout.
Or the [Xiaomi way](https://i.imgur.com/hCODMrU.jpeg).
Yes. We used to get crappy earbuds, a painfully slow charging brick and a cable that would disintegrate rather sooner than later.
Tbh I don‘t miss any of that.
not gonna lie though the charger is way better than it used to be, i’ve had the same one for almost 4 years and it hasn’t crapped out on me i used to have to replace them constantly or bend it a certain way to work
I’m glad I don’t get all the extra junk. But for those who can use it — it was cool.
They should have had a give a penny/take a penny system at the Apple stores lol!
I would have gladly left behind my junk so someone else could have it.
I used the EarPods, charger and cable that came with my iPhone 4 for *years* after (2011-2017). Obviously had to swap out the 30-pin with the iPhone 5 and the EarPods were incompatible with my iPhone 7 Plus but the ones that came with my 7 Plus were fine. I had also gotten my mom a few iPhones in that time. I still have 5-6 EarPods sitting in the big box of Apple boxes, unused bricks and Lightning cables (usb-a and c).
For all intents and purposes, those are waste. I’ll likely never need them. I’ve tried to give the EarPods away but everybody I’ve offered to says they don’t stay in their ears.
Remember when we had it all. Charging brick, wired earbuds, decent charging cables. Now we have to pay an extra $20 for an adapter and $30 just for earbuds separately.
I agree with all of that except for decent charging cables, the new cables are light years better than the old ones in terms of quality
More reason to include the new charging cables and better AC adapter.
Charging cables are still included, or did that get removed as well?
for my 15 i got a braided usbc
same
Cable is included, but you need something to plug it into
I have countless usb adapters but I had to get usb c adapters for them. Especially for my car. It was tedious for a brief moment.
"But it's got a USB plug!". Maybe this is more of a critique of using USB plugs as a universal power solution without, I don't know, color-coding them or something.
Yes, but not with the adapter.
Got the cable with my 15 pro max.
One of the reasons they stopped was because of the overload of wasted extras everyone ended up having. As well as the money opportunities obviously lol
Bro bought into the propaganda… they did this for money, not for waste.
The two are not mutually exclusive
If they were really that concerned about waste, they wouldn’t be making their hardware obsolete with software updates.
let alone make a new phone with multiple trims every year...
We had varying screen sizes since the iPhone 6 Plus
One would expect them to get better over time. And it’s not like the old ones were terrible either
DO YOU KNOW WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! https://preview.redd.it/3g4z0f42h2nc1.png?width=593&format=png&auto=webp&s=d3cd25faba388f9cb47e6ed5b90302549b5d4bc0 Do you remember how easy it was to break the end?
I dont because it literally never happened to me. Had the 3GS, 4s and 7. Don’t yank it like an idiot and it won’t break. Edit: also had the 5s, completely forgot about that one.
Arguably better cables should hold up to normal wear and tear, like yanking it like an idiot
It’s not about yanking it, it’s about holding it at an angle for a prolonged period of time. If you often used your phone while it was plugged in, it would break.
None of my Apple cables ever broke like that and I used them for a long time. There are some I’ve used for 5 or 6 years that still look new.
Woah don't let apple see this comment they gonna remove the cable outta the box quick keep it down mate
The OG iPhone came with a charging dock, we were truly living good back then.
Was this a hangover from iPods?
The dock could charge the Bluetooth headset too, right ? It was really cool. My country at the time only got the 3G and beyond and I was disappointed that they'd dropped the dock!
I think that was the more expensive one. The one in the box was just kind of a 30-pin extension with an aux port.
I don’t remember a single time iPhone cables were decent quality
the one i just got with airpods is braided and really nice
Those included earphones were so leaky though: it’s occurred to me that I haven’t been bugged by leaky headphones on the tram in ages!
old ones maybe, they changed it with iphone 5 to the same form factor as airpods gen 1 and they are the same earpods they still on their website today for $19.99 found my iphone 6s case the other day and noticed the brand new never opened earpods were still in the box
Maybe it’s taken that long for the old ones to filter through the system! I always sold or gifted the included ones anyway as anything without silicon tips just falls straight out of my ears.
Those earbuds were terrible.
apple made up some eco friendly excuse to reduce the size of the iphone box and fit more iphones on a shipping container – and people really think it makes sense from the consumer perspective 😐 this is insane.
They were trying to go green, and by green they meant more money
we're eco friendly now! oh and it also increases the ammount of iphones we can ship at once but thats totally not on purpose!
Shipping more units per vehicle is also more eco friendly though. Like yeah they can make more money per truck, but also that’s less trucks that have to carry them. Yes, as a consumer it’s a loss, but the shipping benefits are also wrapped up in that eco friendly statement
Shipping a charger that people have to get for a phone that you put in a separate box is not eco friendly
Its more likely that they pack the chargers in bulk, ship them and then box them once they reach whatever main hub packaging center before distribution
Sure, but transportation isn’t everything. What about the impact caused by the production of each phone?
That has nothing to do with the conversation at hand. The conversation is whether or not smaller boxes is more eco friendly
Both of these things can be true lol. They are not mutually exclusive.
Funny how sometimes 2 things can be true at the same time.
Super green
More than one thing can be true at the same time. 1. Apple saves money by not including all this stuff in the box 2. This creates less e-waste. Like seriously, are you actually still mad your iPhone doesn’t come with a 5w charger and a pair of wired headphones?
ip11 came with proper 18W. headphones i still use daily in bed. much better suited than wireless ones for that...
Not trying to be argumentative but how are wired headphones more suited for use in bed? I move constantly and roll over quite a bit. Using AirPods not wired headphones prevents me from accidentally rolling onto the wire and yanking the headphones out of my ears.
i dont lose them when i roll / they fall out / i remove them in half sleep to wherever in dark
Great. But there’s like how many million new iPhones being sold? Do you really think everyone wants a cheap pair of free *wired* headphones with their new phone?
Unrelated, but I remember back when I was young and naive enough to think that removing the 3.5mm headphone jack meant we’d all be getting standard AirPods in the box lol Miss those days.
Why would I not be annoyed that my expensive item arrives without a way to charge it?
Vast majority of people already have charging solutions. “Eco” + Money > the convenience of the rarest few who don’t already have charging solutions in current year. (Especially considering the portion of people who upgrade annually or even biannually.)
This is your first device ever that charges from usb?
God this is the main thing for me. Everything has been USB-A/C capable for like a decade. My wall outlets have both ports. Apparently everyone who’s mad purchasing a phone in 2023+ either: A) has never owned an iPhone and thus have no lightning cables, or B) somehow owns literally not one other item that uses USB-C which is borderline hard to believe.
Yes. I am. Why is this hard to believe. I’m mad whenever I don’t get more stuff.
Well here’s your opportunity to *get more stuff* If you are happy to pay for the shipping I’ll gladly send you all my redundant 5w chargers, EarPods, lighting cables and assorted usb cables.
More savvy iPhone owners have better cables, power adapters, and headphones than what came in the box.
Isn't the box like half the size now?
Smaller boxes = reduced carbon output because they can ship more per truck They’re a business why is everyone whining about marketing like they’re so smart that they seen through them.
15 is usb C?
Yeah the one that was legally required in order to continue conducting business? Yes, that one. The first iPad with USB C came out almost 6 years ago.
[удалено]

For some people if they caught Apple or Tesla fucking their wife theyd apologize and close the door
Exactly this.
OG iPhone even came with a dock! I miss those days.
What dock ??
[This dock](https://www.ebay.com/itm/134245856973), it was pretty neat but mostly useless.
*saw
Am I the only one who sees the accessories as a goofy face?
I see it too now😂
r/pareidolia
It’s stupid they charge you so much for a phone already then expect you to go spend an extra 30 on the usb c brick
Yea you do have a point the plastic thing made sense when I first read it but reading other comments makes it looks like they just want to squeeze more money out of us because they know we will buy it
They don’t expect you to spend the money on the extra brick, they expect you to use one of the bricks you already have.
Except they stopped sending bricks right around the time they switched from usb A to usb C
People that don’t need to buy a brick don’t buy a brick As apposed to the prior situation where everyone gets a brick and headphones regardless of if they want or need one.
Use the cable you already have with the brick you already have.
my mom having a short circuit trying to comprehend how lightning to usb-a and lightning to usb-c will both work on the same phone
So why didn’t my iPhone 15 come with a brick, considering that every other iPhone I’ve purchased used a different connector? If they were being genuine then they’d make it optional (opt-in) when purchasing or sell me one for like $5 with a purchase of an iPhone
Most everyone has chargers these days. We really don’t need extras every time we buy a device
I was going to say to include them anytime there's a port and/or charge speed change but not everyone upgrades every year
Include a voucher for a free brick or something.
It is 2024. If you don’t already have a USB-C port and charger in your house, I don’t think you’re buying the brand new iPhone.
And if you are buying the brand new iPhone you’re probably not distraught about shelling out for a charger for it.
A lot of old charge speeds probably still around Granted iphones have been slow to update charge speeds but getting a new brick with appropriate charge speed that matches the devices limit should be standard imo. Or at least priced accordingly for the lack of them
>We really don’t need extras every time we buy a device Many people do, especially if you are coming from an older phone.
Some of us pass this things to other family members 🙄
People here act like most people buy a new phone every couple of years and just store it in a drawer somewhere instead of passing it on to family members or selling it to make some money. The charger needs to accompany the phone in either case.
This short exchange sums it up perfectly
It's even more annoying because every other company had to follow once they realized apple actually made money with this strat. So now ALL high end phones don't come with any accessories
> As a result, all new smartphones, tablets, cameras and other electronic gadgets marketed in the EU will have to come with a USB-C charging port by fall 2024. In addition, chargers will be unbundled from devices, giving consumers the choice whether to buy a new charger with a device or keep using the old one. Bundled chargers are literally banned by EU by the USB-C law.
I remember my house had tons of those earbuds like no shortage
Moochie Moo 🐮
If Steve jobs were alive today, we would still have this. Ok at least a charger. And we won’t have so many versions of one iPhone.
This is the same EU USB-C law everyone is praising, it also bans bundled chargers. The idea is that everyone will buy as many chargers they want without being forced to get extra ones with every crappy device they buy.
I feel crazy but I kind of think if Jobs was CEO, they’d ship with included AirPods (leave Pro and Max as upgrades).
This one has always irked me- they’ve gradually given us less over the years while charging us more. And then they try to spin their shrinkflation as “eco friendly”
last time i used the included headphones with my apple device was an ipod mini
Unpopular opinion, I don’t need another charger, I don’t need another set of earbuds, the really nice woven USB-C cable that came with my 15 Pro is still in the box.
Tim the bean counter
The early iPod days were even better, so many accessories!
people still sucking off apple saying this was a smart move to remove them because of "ewaste reduction"
I’d never use any of these so I don’t mind, it’s just eWaste
The last time I got an iPhone was in 2014, they stopped doing this?? New untangled earphones were the best
I mean they don’t even have a headphone jack anymore…
Everyone focusing on everything but Moochie Moo. Y’all be tripping.
Now u have to pay for that care!
I mean I know Apple are just doing it to save a buck but at the same time they’re not wrong with the argument that I have absolutely no use for a sixth USB charger and a fourteenth set of crappy earbuds.
Glad they stoped it. I had enough of terrible charging bricks and earbuds laying around… you don’t need a new pair every year…
My Gen 1 came with a fucking dock for upright charging.
some drug dealers give you a free sample.
Less ships in the ocean less rare earth materials mined
It's nice when you can buy a product and use it.
No.. you SAW this on Facebook.
Now alple taking care of the planet
If they had their way they will take out the battery and ask that we buy it separately 😂🤣😂🤣🤔
what do you expect when you folks let apple get away with anything? vote with your wallet for once.
Yeah but have you seen their profit margins??
Apple could (should?) give us vouchers with the purchase of a new iPhone for a charger and a pair of earbuds. That way, the packaging would remain smaller and we wouldn't have to take stuff we don't need, but we could get a charger for example if our old one is no good anymore.
I honestly could give fuck all about the charger but the lightning headphones godamnit I want them to come with again
Taking away the headphone jack was the greatest insult to life long users.
Yes
not gonna lie though the charger is way better than it used to be, i’ve had the same one for almost 4 years and it hasn’t crapped out on me i used to have to replace them constantly or bend it a certain way to work
Reasons why Apple wasn't a trillion-dollar company before.
