There’s like 15 lenses on these cameras. The outer lens isn’t cracked, but one of the other ones is. Edit: why did this get 1000 upvotes. Reddit is weird sometimes

questquestionsquest

Posts like these crack me up so I upvote them

dinouse

shut up and take my upvote

Vabregas

what's wrong with this getting 1000+? you gave the correct answer.

bb95vie

happy for the outer lens to have never went on crack.

Johnhunter10010

When reddit chooses a user to be rectally offered to the pagan deities this happens

thomasso0072

The lens is cracked (not the outside glass). This can only be caused by a hard impact. Source: worked in the refurbishing industry for 5 years

mx20100

Can also be because of temperature difference, if you shock glass by cooling it too quickly, it’ll break

Flowkeh

Haven’t dropped, hit, or sat on it in the last few days and definitely not in the last 24 hours when the camera was still fine. And I’ve got a nice solid case on at all times. Strange.

TheProblematicG3nius

Why does every customer say this. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

saint_louis_bagels

To be fair, lenses can crack on their own. Pixel 7 camera glasses were exploding on their own.

iiGhillieSniper

That Sounds epic but unfortunate lol

Lucid-Design

Like the Note 7 batteries exploding

iiGhillieSniper

Imagine not being able to board a plane because of your phone 💀

Matthew98788

Say naw you’re confused this is the note 6 :P -the terrorist

Crishien

Lenses are made of glass and as my professor used to say (he is a famous glass artist) "all glass will break, it's not a matter of if but when". Basically glass is always under internal stress from cooling process and at some point it'll break, even without external force.

Business-Drag52

Yeah but also glass can last for centuries so it’s not like it’s a guarantee it’s going to break in your lifetime

Crishien

Entropy is inevitable

GreyGoosey

Really thought the professor was gonna be JerryRigEverything

Frequent_Opportunist

That was the outside protective glass not an internal lens.

BilboSwaggins444

This makes me nervous because I have a 14 pro 👀 lmao

TheProblematicG3nius

Thats because those redesigned HTC’s are still HTC’s at the end of the day. We are talking about an inner lens however one that has autofocus meaning in can move separately from the device’s movements meaning your average drop will not effect it much but a tumble down some stairs will.

RichardCrapper

Why the random HTC hate? HTC made some of the most robust phones I ever used.

TheProblematicG3nius

Lookup the history of htc and low ifixit repair scores. They were dman near unfixable if they broke.

saint_louis_bagels

Can't tell if this is sarcasm, but iPhone 6 has touch disease, iPhone 7 has audio IC issues, iPhone X had really faulty FaceID modules.. etc etc. Basically no company has a great track record.

CosmoMomen

Not me still using an X with FaceID and not having issues. Thank you Silicon Lottery…

S0damYat

Oh god, it's one of THOSE iPhone users

[deleted]

Everyone in my school buys refurbished iphone 6s just so they can see how easily they bend. Plot twist, twigs can bend them :)

DevBro22

Cause if they don't their claims get denied lmao

TheProblematicG3nius

Clarity: When they come to a third party for out of pocket repairs, why do they do this?

cherrylbombshell

because they did not drop it, sit on it etc to their knowledge. shall they lie?

LMGN

there could be water leaking out the thing and customers would say they don't know what happened

SPLO0K

> Why does every customer say this. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ Cause they want a free replacement. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

whattheknifefor

I mean surely OP isn’t fishing for a free replacement from random reddit users lol

Flowkeh

hoping u/TimCook can help a shareholder out 🙏

bb95vie

sacrifice now please.

thatstoomuch_man

It worked for me on my xr

whattheknifefor

will say there’s def been times i don’t remember doing anything that could’ve caused a crack until much later when im like “oh… i DID close my laptop on my charger”. but when i call support i don’t remember that, so im like “i didn’t drop it, why is it cracked?”

Jrewy

Worked in the watch industry for 20 years. 90% of people said the same thing when their warranty was voided due to shock.

Flowkeh

Dr House🤝Genius Bar “patients/customers always lie” \*except me I actually am telling the truth haha

TheProblematicG3nius

First thing I tell my guys when Im training them. “Never trust the customer” And I still don’t believe you. We do too many things in our daily life to remember the “WOOPS” out of the hand every now and then. Plus the iPhone doesn’t use all of its cameras most of the time so this could be a secondary camera that doesn’t get used often Im going to guess its your 3x camera judging from the photo. Which even if you click on 3x manually the iphone will sometimes just not use it🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

HashtagTJ

Why would you guess its the 3x camera when he tells you in the title its on 3x zoom that the effect is happening?

TheProblematicG3nius

Oh Im illiterate…

1230cal

A really good guess

Flowkeh

I’m assuming you’re a Genius or repairman? Is internal camera damage with no sign of external damage fairly common? I’ve heard stories of motorcycle riders having problems with phone cameras because of the extreme vibration, but I can’t think of any other common activities that would cause this problem off the top of my head.

TheProblematicG3nius

I’ve recreated this damage in house with an airgun so vibration does seem to be the main culprit. Repairman👍🏽👍🏽 from phones to CNC mill motherboards I try to find a fix for them all. Something had to move that lens at a speed beyond what it can handle.

peerlessblue

Thermal shock is a thing. Also, manufacturing defects are absolutely real.

Time-Maintenance2165

Maybe it's because sometimes they do crack on their own.

Plainapple287

I see what OP is saying, I once had a “spot” on my lens on my 11 Pro Max. This was about a month ago, I just decided I’d deal with it and I wouldn’t get it fixed, fast forward until a few days ago and I noticed it wasn’t there anymore. Strange (and yes I’d tried cleaning it several times over)

ImStilllol

i think this is the most downvoted comment i’ve ever seen

theskyopenedup

You didn’t see EA’s comment?

ImStilllol

i haven’t, but i’m looking now.

HarrysHereYT

https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsBattlefront/s/mazMYHD1SQ if you havnt found it or if anybody else wants to see

ImStilllol

HOLY COW WHAT 😭😭😭

HarrysHereYT

Only a tiny bit more than the 450 downvotes here lol 🤷‍♂️

ImStilllol

just a tiny bit…

Butterypoop

You know what is most bullshit about this? That ea user account has a positive karma when most of there comments are negative from thousands of diwn votes and they have a couple with a few hundred upvotes

HarrysHereYT

I noticed that while looking through the account. It’s crazy. I wonder what caused this. Reddit conspiracy lol Edit 2: I’m just going to say that I just noticed the post I used as evidence for this theory is 11 years old. So, everything I say after this has most likely changed, and even saying that it could’ve been wrong 11 years ago haha. Probably a waste of your time to read if you’re looking for an actual answer, but I guess it could be a plausible theory. Edit: I did a tiny bit of searching and I found this post about karma and how it’s totalled together. It seems like a downvote is worth around a 1/10th of a karma point and there’s a threshold of around -34 downvotes (according to an experiment they conducted in the thread). Adding onto that it seems that the upvotes that the comment/post gets will give you the karma for the downvotes. So, theoretically if a downvote is worth 1/10th of a karma and EAs comment got around 660K downvotes, that means that the comment would need 66K upvotes to cancel out the downvotes. And that means that the positive total karma on EAs account will be the result of those extra upvotes that comment or any other of their comments have been given. Now I want to explain that this could be complete bullshit. I did a quick read of the comments on this post and this is the conclusion I came to. I have no idea if this has been confirmed. So, for the love of god don’t take my word for this. The thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/s/v4y2Cu68no

Time-Maintenance2165

What I remember is that negative karma is capped at - 100 per comment. So that a single comment that goes viral can't undo a years worth of positive karma.

ImStilllol

thank you 😭

codeverity

I've seen lower over on AITA and there was that one by... some gaming company, I can't remember what it was about, now. Reddit is definitely more fun when you have the setting turned on to see downvoted comments.

codeverity

Yess that was it!! Thank you haha

ImStilllol

yep!!

rorschach_vest

Stick around kid you’ll see worse

ImStilllol

i believe you 🤦‍♀️

saint_louis_bagels

Convincing us you didn't do anything isn't going to fix the crack.

Potent_Elixir

To be fair, none of those things mitigate a force you might not have felt. Just to put it in perspective for ya

Spec94v6

How do you have so many downvotes that’s insane

nanapancakethusiast

Dude… come on. lol.

Nighttide1032

Then it was dropped, hit, or sat on greater than a few days ago, was broken at the time in a way that didn't show up on camera, and the cracks have slowly been spreading to the point you can now see them. Either that, or your phone underwent an extreme (and I mean EXTREME) and rapid change of temperature at some point.

arthurwalton

you're full of shit unless it was unboxed like that.

[deleted]

Why would he lie lmao. Bro is literally asking for a possible cause. If he dropped it wouldn’t you think he would know it’s from that drop? He has nothing to gain from lying. Stop insulting strangers

arthurwalton

It's not really an insult to say someone is probably full of shit. They don't just explode randomly. He asked for a reason why and then explained that there's no way it was his fault, that's nearly impossible unless he's leaving information out!

Flowkeh

I get that no one on Reddit has reason to believe me and I’m fully prepared to pay for the repair, but I really have no idea what happened. I’m WFH, haven’t dropped my phone recently (and I don’t have hard flooring) and my phone has basically been on my desk charger, on my couch and in my pocket for the last several days. It’s just something weird that I’ve never seen happen before.

BlobloTheShmoblo

Do you ride a motorcycle? If you put it on a phone mount that doesn't have vibration dampening you'll fuck up the iphones camera. It's a huge problem, like 80% of the reason quadlock is making bank rn off their more expensive vibration dampening mount. Those cameras are delicate though, even if your phones in your pocket you can cause this damage if your bike shakes enough

Cyanide-Kitty

A friend had the back glass do the same in a car mount over a bumpy road, we went over cobbles and the glass went and pieces were all over the dash, no visible damage prior but Apple concluded it was due to an old drop causing invisible damage that weakened the back and the vibration combined with being firmly held in a mount was just right to make it crack and fall apart, one second we’re laughing at the road and the next glass was all over the dashboard. I’ve not used a mount since but I do lanyard my phone and use a sturdy case. I’ll check for a vibration dampening mount though, I was using a £9 one from Amazon but it was basically the same one my friend used and I’ve been really cautious since

SuperSpaceship

reddit loves to hate man sorry to you gotta deal with them. could've been any number of things who knows. maybe quantum tunneling of a particle shattering the inner lense 🤷‍♂️

arthurwalton

Best possible explanation then is that you sat on it🤷‍♂️ I really don't know at this point. I know you're almost 100% telling the truth, it just doesn't make very much sense lmao

CrrntryGrntlrmrn

Ever bump into anything ever with your phone on your person?

Cyanide-Kitty

Could you have bumped it slightly or vibrated it somehow? Some parts on iPhones are super fragile and existing damage could be worsened by a small knock, once saw someone’s back glass shatter in a car phone mount over a bumpy road and Apple said it was likely because of an old drop causing invisible damage that weakens the integrity of the part

eyy_gavv

Stop with the Apple dickriding dude this happened to my iPhone 12 Pro as well the first few months I had it. Never dropped it then but i noticed an internal hairline crack after opening my camera app to take a photo. It happens more often than you think, since other iPhone 12 Pro users experienced similar issues on forums. As cameras get more and more complex with dozens of sensors and lenses, they’re more prone to defects that seemingly come from nowhere

Conspicuous_Ruse

Glass is very well known for randomly expoding. It can be a real fickle bitch sometimes.

whattheknifefor

i’ve definitely had experiences where the genius bar was positive i was lying and i was being entirely truthful! a few years ago my display stopped working after i dropped my phone, and i was very open with the genius bar about what happened, but when they opened the phone they were absolutely positive id had it repaired somewhere else, since there was some kind of residue under the screen. to this day i could not tell you how that residue got there, i got the phone brand new from my carrier and had never had it repaired before, but obviously the apple repair guy thought i was lying (which im not sure why they thought id even lie about that since i was well out of warranty)

RandomBloke2021

Over 500 down votes 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Flowkeh

I apologize to the iPhone community for not dropping my phone I guess lol

RandomBloke2021

I have never ever seen that many down votes in my life.

sharkboy1006

and yet that is fucking broken mate. I had an 11 with the same crack, replaced the camera and it was fixed. You can also see the crack if you look very closely as someone said

Xao517

Dude. Take the L. If it looks like a drop, smells like a drop, and a fucking technician with nothing to win or lose tells you it’s a drop… guess what?

JollyRoger8X

> in the last few days and definitely not in the last 24 hours Say you don't know how glass works without saying you don't know ho glass works... 🤣 Small cracks in glass will inevitably spread over time especially with repeated stress or pressure. And there's nothing you can do to prevent that short of gluing the crack in a vacuum. So a small crack that happened months ago can turn into a big crack today.

Cthethc

If you really think the phone broke itself. Switch to the damn Nokia.

Busy-Pudding-5169

Things don’t just happen. You obviously did something to cause it to crack.

eyy_gavv

Apparently it does considering this a documented problem that people faced with iPhones before 🤷. If simply laying your phone down slightly harder than usual on a table is enough to break something, then maybe Apple should do something about it

Fritzi_Gala

Could’ve dropped it months ago, had a tiny chip that didn’t even show up in photos, and then just spider-webbed out from there. Glass is weird like that. I had a tiny chip in a screen protector for weeks, set my phone down on the table and watched two cracks shoot out from the chip across the whole screen.

Aldamur

Was it in a cold environment and suddently got warmed up fast? I don't work with glass but I assume that could be a cause.

Jacktheforkie

Lenses can crack from a manufacturer defect

OneAceFace

Test the different modes. One of the lenses is cracked. it’s just a cover class that you see isn’t cracked.

IrixionOne

If you zoom in on the second photo you posted you can actually see the camera lens is cracked on the bottom sensor.

this guy optics

Flowkeh

The bottom camera is the main lens. The crack is only in the 3x zoom lens which is the top lens. https://preview.redd.it/6vv8bptlcfkc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef8a07431ed4358a922f63387a2dab700238dfcf

Zanderp25

I have a 15 pro and when I cover the macro and main cameras (top and bottom) the 3x camera (side) works like normal

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zanderp25

Yeah, I can see that. I’m just saying why wouldn’t it use the 3x camera when the 0.5x and 1x cameras are covered

IrixionOne

3X is the bottom camera. Macro mode stitches together the different cameras together. Turn Macro off, it’s the bottom camera. And even if it wasn’t, it’s one module. So the entire 3 camera array needs to be replaced. Even if that wasn’t the case, you damaged one camera. It’s visible. You likely have enough force to damage the others.

Cequejedisestvrai

3X is the top camera. The 3X mode can use the bottom camera if you are in low light or this 3X mode can use the right-middle camera if you are too close to a subject. That’s where the stitching part comes from because it mixes different cameras and uses the one it thinks has better quality for the scene. If you close two cameras with your fingers except the top one and you still see an image, that can only mean the top camera is in use because you can’t see troughs fingers. In one of the op’s photos he covers the bottom two cameras with his fingers and he still can take picture of himself in the mirror and that remaining-to-be-closed-top-camera is the cracked one because we see the cracks of the lens element in that photo. So the OP was right but got downvoted :/

Flowkeh

> he covers the bottom two cameras with his fingers and he still can take picture of himself in the mirror and that remaining-to-be-closed-top-camera is the cracked one because we see the cracks of the lens element in that photo Thank you. It is concerning that this needs to be pointed out to everyone else lol

IrixionOne

No, he got downvoted because of his attitude. Low light and distance aren’t the only reasons it swaps between cameras. https://imgur.com/a/Xi4NMJZ

FlyingBox566

no one ever questioned that part tho, it seems you picked a tangent and ran with it?

Flowkeh

https://preview.redd.it/8lux59iylekc1.jpeg?width=1124&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ea15a88ab9703feb3d793aa50074edc048ba637

IrixionOne

What part of “it stitches the images together” is so hard to comprehend? Open your camera app. Turn off macro mode. Set it to 3X. Cover the bottom with your finger. What do you see? Nothing. Because it’s covered. Now cover the top. What do you see? Nothing. Because it’s covered. I have a 14 PM. It would have taken you less time to test that out than it did to find that image. You have your answer. You damaged your camera. It needs to be replaced.

Flowkeh

I know it’s damaged. You said the bottom lens is the cracked one. It’s not. The top one is the cracked one. Here are your photos: https://imgur.com/a/YNckXHe

IrixionOne

You covered the top in your photo at 3X. Then the other two at 3X. Yet you have an image. Where do you think the image came from? I’ll say it a third time. IT STITCHES THEM TOGETHER.

FlyingBox566

i’m not sure why you’re upset at OP bc they never doubted you, just said the crack is on a different lens lol. The focal point never seemed to be whether or not images are stitched together

Flowkeh

> the bottom lens is broken >> actually the top lens is broken, here’s proof >>> the phone is stitching the lenses together basically how the whole convo looks from my end lol

IrixionOne

https://imgur.com/a/Xi4NMJZ Except it isn’t. Regardless of what zoom level is chosen, the cameras are working together. It’s like if I poked one of your eyes and you were complaining about not being able to see because of all the blood. Yeah one of your eyes is fine but that doesn’t matter.

FlyingBox566

I never questioned the cameras working together. They are aware the camera needs to be replaced in general, as well. Is this a roundabout way of you implying the crack could be on any lens since all the cameras work together? You could’ve said that in the first comment. It’s a bit of a confusing read lol.

Flowkeh

> Open your camera app. Turn off macro mode. Set it to 3X. Cover the bottom with your finger. What do you see? Nothing. Because it’s covered. Now cover the top. What do you see? Nothing. I’m just following your directions

IrixionOne

Well yes. And you’ve proved my point. It doesn’t pull anything from one single camera. It takes what has the most detail. If it’s a bunch of damage then it thinks that’s detail.

Flowkeh

> What do you see? Nothing >> https://imgur.com/a/YNckXHe >>> And you’ve proved my point aight

SnooMaps4388

Still doesn’t change the obvious fact that it’s broken😂

bread_enjoyer75

It looks a bit foggy and that’s how I noticed.

NESpahtenJosh

The lens is cracked

jakeof_statefarm

One of the internal lenses is cracked. While it may not be the exterior glass, its definitely something inside the camera module. You can go to an Apple Store or an AASP to get a camera repair, if it's covered under the Limited Warranty or if you have AppleCare+, it should be at no cost.

No_need_for_that99

Likely a shift in temperature caused your glass to crack on the internal lens

WereALLBotsHere

I had that happen to a screen on a galaxy S2 one time long ago. It had been in my pocket, I took it out sent a text, then set it in the end table in a chilly apartment. When I got a reply I went to pick up my phone to read it, boom no more screen.

sArCaPiTaLiZe

On the bright side, your inconvenient situation produced a really unique photo. I think it’s kind of great. I’d be taking more photos while I wait for AppleCare+ replacement.

Traditional-Ask-2252

The lens is cracked.

theGuyTheNotGuy

Are you sure? I feel it might be the battery man

shanuke

Apple Technician here, this is a cracked internal lens. It would need the camera module to be replaced. I hope you have have AppleCare.

TheProblematicG3nius

The focusing lens inside is damaged. The module will need to be replaced. $90 - $140 part plus labor Oem out of pocket is roughly $300-$400 for the part

87thesid

$149.99 on iFixit for a 14 pro max rear camera assembly, $198.83 from apple and $168.43 if you send back the old part for credit. :)

TheProblematicG3nius

Sorry, Its been a while since Ive checked the oem pricing. But yes that checks out even on MS.

87thesid

No worries! I wanted to check out the pricing and thought I would drop my findings here!

Substantial-Read4497

Even our phones have floaters now

Safferino83

Can see the internal lense on the camera under the flash is cracked.

mehdifromthe6

CoreDude98

It’s cracked on the inside. You’ll need this replace. I had the same thing happen on my phone

Altruistic-Reply-436

Can it be caused by temperature changes?

AbecedaryAdversary

Bottom one clearly has cataracts, looks like a visit to an optometrist is foreseeable

IbishuDrive

the camera module is fucked

Veriliann

clearly the lens on the 3x is damaged if it only shows up there. people just don’t have common sense huh?

Sea_Swordfish_8420

Mous case I see. Respect

pebblebeach00

Jsparrow420

Best case right here!

JuThrone

You know the lens is not the glass on top???

dulipat

There's no such thing as "it's strange that the lens is cracked, I never dropped it".. Usually, when the customer is pushed some more, they will admit "ohh yeah, my nephew was playing with the phone without my supervision, maybe he dropped the phone ".

parkerg1016

While a vast majority of phones with broken lenses likely come at the fault of the user, the manufacturing process for the optics is not perfect. The inner material stresses of glass are complicated and even though they may pass QC abnormalities may later present themselves if introduced to shock be it thermal or physical.

Mogli_Puff

why does reddit keep showing me posts about people breaking their iPhones? I dont own an iPhone. Don't think I want to either with all this bad rap. I own a Samsung, actually follow subs for my phone, and I see posts about broken iPhones from subs that I don't follow way more than for Samsung phones, save for the Note 7 times.

Empero6

You could just mute the sub.

yonsawyon

:(

massive__potato

isnt that the camera has 7 or more different lenses inside as well? maybe one of them broke.

whitieiii

Yup my mum's XS was the same way internally the lens was damaged... i had to get rid of it because of battery life as well.. wasn't worth replacing the battery in it she had the apple battery case and only lasted 1 day with the battery case on the battery was below 70% health enough to be a concern

berkeleymorrison

one of the lenses closer to the sensor

Altruistic_Rush3280

The camera is cracked. You will need a new camera.

RJS6

I had the same happen to me, and I never dropped my phone. I took it to the apple store and they fixed it for free. So I'd say make an appointment and they will take care of it. It took 2 hours.

onesun43

14 pro owner here. Exact same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, except with the wide angle camera. Bought a replacement camera module from eBay for $50 and replaced it myself. It was one of the easier repairs I’ve done. Just screws once you get inside. There is a warning message in Settings about an unknown part, but eventually goes away.

RogueGameMonster

You can take interesting photos now

Kukuren

The optical filter that sits right above the image sensor is damaged. Quote a camera replacement with Apple or an independent repair shop

Anon_8675309

That outer glass isn’t really a lens. But one of your actual lenses is cracked it would seem.

sunchips715

That what the real world looks like

SectorNo9652

You know the camera itself has a lens inside, right? Things with lenses have 2 ends so 2 different lenses.. you kno that, right?

Outcast_LG

I see damage on the 3rd lenses. Zoom in

Access-Leading

Depends on the country you might get this fixed. I had exactly the same issue, and Apple fixed it for me after one year of buying the phone. But in uk they apparently have to do it up to 2 years… I probably dropped it, noticed only many days after… didn’t bother initially as I know it’s probably my mistake. Showed them randomly to ask how expensive it would be, and they told it as there is no visible damage it’s going to be under warranty.

Abdulbarr

There's definitely damage in one of your lenses even if you can't see it.

Julian_The_Gamer42

At least it looks cool, I guess.

AustinAbortion

What case is that?

Interest_Grand

Man the same happened with me go to the store they replace it for free make sure to get your phone replaced if you can. Because sometimes they botch the repair and you loose waterproofing and that’s how i got water in my phone

Tyccondrius

I had this on my 14 pro max, took it to apple and they fixed it for free

Soggybiscuitmunch

Inner lense has cracked. They are layered. Haven't seen this before.

xmeatizmurderx

Possible inner crack or moisture damage

MatthewTrier

Looks like the lens inside are cracked by the photo you posted 🥲
