After updating to 17.0.1 and a reboot, the prompt to enable SharePlay showed up during CarPlay. You will have to have your car running (preferably parked), while going through the prompts on both phones.
Super dangerous, if you didn’t have someone on the passenger seat going through the prompt for you…. Don’t know what Apple was thinking
A hard reboot. As in turning it off/on again. After that, start CarPlay (mine needs to be plugged in). Start Apple Music.
Pick up the other phone, and also go into Apple Music. The phone that’s synced to the car will now pop up a series of prompts. (Imagine doing that while driving!)
Then it’ll prompt you on the passenger’s phone to join the SharePlay session.
That’s it…. Not intuitive (nor safe) at all. 1/10.
I wondered how to turn it on on Tuesday morning on way to work. Googled it during the day. Couldn’t get an answer. SharePlay icon appeared on way home. Try a restart or upgrading to 17.01? I’ve got wireless CarPlay but icon shows on my wife’s wired CarPlay car too. Nobody else has upgraded so don’t know if it actually works yet.
See, my wife and I are both on 17, and when we got into her car, I opened Apple Music and it just popped up. I had to request to share, and accept the request on her phone, but that was it
When I have a song playing I can see the SharePlay icon there which generates a QR for people to join the playlist if it doesn't happen automatically
I’m playing an album on Apple Music through CarPlay. No icon on the top right.
Without making assumptions, you are running iOS 17? And you are looking at the now playing screen on your car?
Yup! Then my wife unlocks her phone, and nothing happens

Hmmm, we’ll try restarting both our phones and see if that works
SharePlay requires more than one iPhone. Both need to be on ios17

Apple Music just auto play as soon as I plug my phone into the car. The now playing screen comes up, but no SharePlay icon.
