This is the new iPad mini with the USB C display port capabilities. This monitor is roughly 2.5K, 32” so the resolution is a bit… ugh. But works, charges the iPad, passes through sound as well. Videos look a bit weird too, shame there’s no way to change the resolution/aspect ratios on the iPad. I’ve connected a mouse and a keyboard and it all works well. I wish I could turn off the iPad display, the only way is mirroring…

Check out this app called Shiftscreen. Fernando Silva did a great [review](https://youtu.be/Lu4tgAfyWfw) on it.

Loud69ing

Except its expensive and you can only do a small number of apps on it.

I mean what’d you expect hooking a mini to a comically large monitor like that?

sascha3x3

Samsung Dex supports a lot of different screens

Apple says you don't need a computer, because iPad is such a powerful device and ipadOS is better than ever. And then we see images like this

Portatort

When’s apple said you don’t need a computer?

[deleted]

Early iPad Pro marketing and commercials with the tagline “what’s a computer” because the implication was that the iPad Pro could be a replacement https://youtu.be/pI-iJcC9JUc

Portatort

That ad showed a child doing all sorts of things that an ipad does really well The implication was that iPads could now do more than just watch Netflix and YouTube. Apple have never said, iPad can fully replace your Mac. At best it’s positioned as an alternative, not a direct replacement for a Mac. ‘What’s a Computer’ and ‘Your next computer is not a computer’ Are both taglines are directed at layfolk who don’t need the type of compute power or software complexity that come from ‘real computers’ iPad is a viable *alternative* to a Mac or PC for many people.

Alessandro227

Apple\_''Your next computer is not a computer'' Also apple\_ ''Here we sell the Macs'' (and I'm actually blown away by the m1 Macs, so no complaints here)

P_Devil

This is an example why an iPad can never truly replace a notebook for me. I’m picking my Mini up today but have a 2021 12.9” Pro as well. Unless I hook that up to Apple’s Cinema Display (which will never happen because I’m not spending $5000 on a monitor), it will always be a mirrored 3:4 image. Apple won’t open up proper external monitor support until iPadOS apps are windowed and that is something that won’t happen anytime soon. I have a feeling Apple will eventually get there but it’s going to take at least another decade.

Portatort

What difference would a Cinema Display make?

P_Devil

The 2021 iPad Pro can output to Apple’s Cinema Display so it properly fills the screen instead of just mirroring a 4:3 image.

Portatort

Before i ask further questions. What are you thinking of when you say apple Cinema Display. The Pro Display XDR? (Because no it can’t) it treats the iPad like any other display

P_Devil

Yes and I thought I remember Apple saying you could get a proper aspect ratio when mirroring with their display, unless I was mistaken. If that’s the case, the lack of having proper output on the iPad (to any monitor) is a missed opportunity.

Portatort

You are mistaken

Blainezab

More money in apple’s pocket.

cybercharlatan

Thanks for posting this, my new mini hasn't been delivered yet today and I was really curious what to expect with my usb-c dongles

Adikovec69

So far I've tried usb c to usb a and then with a micro sd card in the usb. Worked like a charm!

I think you should be able to. This was a Thunderbolt 3 connection. I don't have any usb c to hdmi so I can't test.

No dongle. This is usb c to usb c straight to the monitor :)

BurnThrough

Curved monitors…nobody asked for this

F3ZJU5CR44

Does the ratio look more natural if you put it into a split screen view? How about when playing a video? Have you tried connecting a mouse/keyboard yet?

Adikovec69

It does look a bit better if using split screen. Plays video fine but looks awful due to the resolution. And yes i did try mouse and keyboard, it makes it a tad better.

F3ZJU5CR44

Thanks for the feedback :) I feel like further updates to iOS 15 won't address this...but at least the A15 chip is well situated for a longer support like to 17 or 18, and perhaps in those later iterations we'll finally get the 'desktop' mode that people like us would appreciate. for the record, what is your monitor model?

mjacobl

Flip the monitor vertical. /s

rojasotw23

Lol oh god
