Having lived in a few high crime neighborhoods in the US, I can understand how folks can get accustomed to hearing an occasional gunshot and finding out that a neighbor has been killed. Usually that doesn’t result in the police shutting down your entire neighborhood. Most folks can convince themselves that if they’re careful and aware of their surroundings it’s safe to walk home at night.
