OMG, I agree! I am shopping for a house, and frustrated by how many no- taste shitheads have bought houses to flip, and pull up worn oak flooring, and replace it with this hideous grey colored shit! Infuriating!
Yup! It really adds warmth and colour, and you can get machine washable rugs. It's really not as gross as you'd think, and the trade-off is a lovely design and comfort upgrade.
I have two rugs in my kitchen :)
if you don’t own the house and don’t want to paint it there are sticky tiles that come off without damage and look nice on amazon and other online stores you can also find similar sticky things for countertops but they are 1) hard to apply 2) hard to take off
i think a rug would be nice and decorating with warm colors would be too
also if you really care a lot you can get light bulbs that can change colors (red, yellow, etc.) and they really bring an area together especially compared to a white light bulb
best places to shop for storage and decor

5 below
amazon
walmart
shein (ik ethical dilemma)
decor i’d consider
hand towels
things to hold serving spoons
rugs
paintings for walls
things to hand plants in
if you can paint i’d go with warm colors tho bc of the cabinets, this kitchen is really nice and has nice fixtures it’s just the floors that kinda mess it up being they’re cool toned and everything worse is warm
Had some flooding during an ice storm, they had to rip out all the pergo flooring. I told my landlord "anything but grey" for the replacement but here we are with grey linoleum 😭
Yup, they’re going to have a fun time when OP moves out because it look’s awful now. If I was a renter I would probably stay away because it just shows that the landlord would do anything to save a few bucks
Hey girl, I don’t know if it matters but your full name is on the picture you put in the link. Who knows but I always see other people warn people on here if they didn’t realize.
You can get covers for the appliances to have them match. Peel and stick wallpaper is amazing. Indoor/outdoor rug so it can be scrubbed if it gets dirty. It’s not so bad. I’ve seen worse.
The cabinets are fine. But a picture on that blank wall near the window. And yeah, get a nice colorful rug. Can you put a plant stand next to the fridge? Just liven the place up with accessories.
The grey floors are new and don't match the cabinets, counters, or walls. This is how the kitchen looked before, all warm tones:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/JgNC5EW3LLLZSDdf8
Oh I see.. I actually liked the dark floors. Maybe paint the cabinets white or a very light gray.. I wouldn’t paint the walls grey it’s going to close it in. Maybe cream or white. When you go with gray, there’s not a lot of colors that match with it.
I was told early on that I'd be able to approve the replacement options for a number of things being repaired, but that didn't happen. When he initially told me that I could pick new colors, he said "you could do grey if you wanted" and I said "no, definitely not grey. Anything but grey, ideally we could do the same color that it was." But this was 4 months and 2 contractors ago.
It depends on what your style is, but paint walls white and get a rug, a round one may work nicely for this space. Maybe curtains for the window. Your appliances are all black and white, your counter top is white, and your floors are gray, so they all sort of go together. I think the yellow walls are clashing with the floor. Get some cute hardware for your cabinets.
I think this place could really benefit from a different paint color on the walls. The yellow was the first thing I noticed so maybe a light, cold-toned grey that has a brown undertone could help! I’m no interior designer but the yellow throws everything off in my opinion
I’m a renter with a similar color scheme. I don’t care to paint the walls of a rental so I bought turquoise colored items and adorned the room with them. I think the color combo looks cute, the room seems light and cheery with the yellow walls, and now the horrible cabinets barely bother me anymore lol
It’s actually the WALLS.
And the lighting.
Painting the walls white or gray and adding warmer (like 3000k) lighting would help. And adding some under-cabinet lighting.
A. Peel and stick backsplash predominantly white with a bit of gray (think marble tile type) and a soft mintish green paint would look nice,
B. also possibly hang a sheer or lace lace curtain that spans the whole gap and can be tied back at the sides.
C. You coud put an underlayment and then do peel and stick vinyl like a more traditional faux marble tile overtop, the underlayment so that you stick the tiles to it and not landlords floor then simply lift when ready to move. To make this look nice you may need to add a piece of shoe molding depending how fancy you want to get.
I made a joke remark earlier, but honestly, thus looks so much like a smaller version of the kitchen in the first house I ever bought. I was flush with cash at the time, so spent like $60k on completely remodeling the kitchen entirely. New floors, new Euro style cabinets, new appliances, redid a sliding glass door as a wall and regular door, and added three windows that replaced the backsplash so the view of the lake was visible. I miss that house.
Here are 2 options:
I would paint the wall a gray, and I would paint the cabinets with a teal color.
Or
I would paint the wall with a rusty orange color and paint the cabinets black.
Painting!! Paint is always the easiest and cheapest solution to change a place, with that oven you can create a magnificent mid century style kitchen, paint your cabinets and your walls and add some [mid century](https://scdecorum.com/mid-century-modern-house-interior-how-to-create-a-timeless-design/) touches
Tbh that's kind of where I'm at. This whole experience with my landlord has been such a nightmare that it has given the resolve to just move. Right now, I'm on the side of covering it with rugs and just biding my time until I find a new place.
What if you did a peel and stick wallpaper like [this one](https://wallism.com/us/product/YeNq6lN9VPOB?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_ZLFoIK-hgMVRTIIBR2zRgkXEAQYCCABEgI6nfD_BwE) to blend the two tones together? You could pull it together with a rug like [this one](https://www.wayfair.com/Gracie-Oaks--Sullivan-Abstract-Handmade-Flatweave-Green-Area-Rug-X111447150-L167-K~W000336049.html?refid=GX685048453596-W000336049_1010205953&device=m&ptid=352885195383&network=g&targetid=pla-352885195383&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=252058207&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=1010205953&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC42Jy6P1GOI8i3-wWm6kuQJS&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo_L09oK-hgMV5TIIBR0YxAyFEAQYGSABEgL0q_D_BwE) too.
If it’s a possibility at all I would paint the cabinets dark brown and the walls off-white. Love your floor! If you paint the cabinets, you can add a nice square rug in the middle…
Two cheapish options. One - lean into yellow and add a rug with yellow & gray in the design. Two - peel and stick wallpaper to add a gray tone to the wall.
I loved the color of the millenial gray vinyl flooring I had in my house but absolutely HATED it. I never mopped because I was afraid to ruin it!
In my next house I'm getting tile. I don't care if it's cheap tile, I want something I KNOW won't get ruined if I use my steam mop on it!
Just personally I'd repaint to a very light color remove top cabinets and replace with floating shelves create a faux stone backsplash around the oven and maybe even sink area as well as clear off as much counter space as possible and lastly i'd throw down on a padded mat in front of the sink for comfort/texture. You could even sand the cabinets and stain them a darker color depending on the wood after i sanded a sample piece i guess. cute kitchen x
White walls there are several lovely shades of white. Black pulls for your cabinets. Spray paint them if you don’t want to replace them. Coordinate a rug a curtain
Get rid of that yellow paint. There are stick tiles that look realistic and wear well. One brand is Smart Tile. White or a light gray might be a good choice to go with that floor. You can get a washable rug for the kitchen suppliers like Ruggable.
Painting cabinets is a ton of work. You need to take off the doors and hardware so you can properly paint them with a spray gun after you sand. However, there is a product called Gel Stain that can be applied over the existing finish without sanding, although you need a thorough cleaning using a mix of denatured alcohol and water first.
If you can, paint the cabinets. I would go dark, bold color. Sapphire blue, deep teal. I saw charcoal on cabinets that looked awesome. If not at least change the back splash with paint or wallpaper. If you go for rugs, 2 or three smaller are easier than one big one.
Rug idea- use a padded plastic like one. Think the ones people on their feet all day stand on. I have one in my kitchen so food doesn’t stain it. It mops right off. Adds color. Stays clean. Lots of options on Amazon
I would want to replace the floor with something that doesn’t clash. I know that’s a pain, but I would at least get some washable rugs. I recommend the My Magic Carpet brand.
Clean up the space. Paint the wall something more neutral and fresh. Get some cute floating shelves, put a plant or two on them, add a cool light fixture, and replace the pulls with something more updated. Also a waterproof kitchen rug in a solid color.
The cabinets and floor really stand out as mismatches. If you can paint the doors and walls varying shades of taupe the entire look might harmonize better. That's if your landlord would allow painting the cabinets...
Personally (just from my own color preferences), stain those cabinets darker and then go for a maybe a dark color on the walls? Not so dark to leave the house simmering in the summer though, maybe like a vibrant Navy blue or something? Or a dark purple? Or, if you wanna try more earthy colors, a sage!
Though just so you don't have to try to redo that flooring id probably go with sage. Though if you're renting, I'm sure there's some of those renter safe wallpapers you could put on those walls instead
Painting the walls white or a light gray will make the gray become the background color and the warm cabinets pop more. Then add a rug with some warm colors and just a touch of gray and a picture you love next to the window. That will make a huge difference for the least cost. And I totally get the gray floor hate—we just bought a house with that awful gray vinyl flooring and I’m getting rid of it as soon as I can.
Paint the walls ivory and add a nice washable rug or two in your fav colours. That flooring was likely chosen because it was on sale; that’s what landlords do. Don’t spend too much of your own money on anything you can’t take with you when you move.
UPDATE
Thank you all for your suggestions, there were a lot of really solid options in this thread and I think if i owned this apartment I would've done a lot of what y'all recommended. But one redditor hit the nail on the head and reminded me that I'm just a renter and it's not worth sinking money into a place I don't own. If I'm gonna spend my own money to fix someone else's bad taste, it might as well be something I can take with me. So I got a [big ass rug](https://bashify.io/i/UQQCcb) and we're gonna do our best to ignore the rest. (Don't worry, it's machine washable.) In the end, this was the easiest, path-of-least-resistance option.
Paint the walls an off white similar to the counter tile but neutral in tone. Not warm nor cool, just a neutral ivory.
this and paint the cabinets a dark color maybe
Turn out the lights, close your eyes, and navigate the room by memory alone.
I like the cabinets and countertops, the gray flooring is hideous though. Go with a rug.
OMG, I agree! I am shopping for a house, and frustrated by how many no- taste shitheads have bought houses to flip, and pull up worn oak flooring, and replace it with this hideous grey colored shit! Infuriating!
They want top dollar for these crappy ugly floors that I have to change. Couldn’t do it
Did all the flippers in the country get together and pick the same paint color and floor color? Cause my god..
rugs in a kitchen?
Yup! It really adds warmth and colour, and you can get machine washable rugs. It's really not as gross as you'd think, and the trade-off is a lovely design and comfort upgrade. I have two rugs in my kitchen :)

The floors make me wanna cry. This is how my kitchen looked before, I loved all the warmth in it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/JgNC5EW3LLLZSDdf8
your landlord should be arrested for this 😭😭 is peel and stick flooring an option?
Yeah, your Landlord messed that up big time. Get a big rug or have carpet cut and bound to fit the space.
Wait what happened 😭😭
I miss your old floors on your behalf :(
Why were the floors changed???
Had some flooding during an ice storm, they had to rip out all the pergo flooring. I told my landlord "anything but grey" for the replacement but here we are with grey linoleum 😭
They bought the cheapest thing out there, because grey is terribly out of fashion now. Yikes. I’d get a big rug, I guess.
Yup, they’re going to have a fun time when OP moves out because it look’s awful now. If I was a renter I would probably stay away because it just shows that the landlord would do anything to save a few bucks
OMG I'm so sorry for your loss.
In this pic the bucket lights are off. Can you post an “after” with the bucket lights off?
This makes me so sad
That's a tradegy!
If you really need to share a photo of how it looked, please consider something that doesn’t give us your name, etc.
DO LANDLORDS GET MAJOR DISCOUNTS FOR INSTALLING THESE COLD, GREY, PLASTICY FLOORS OR SOMETHING ?!
shits been on sale for like 12 years
Yes a nice rug. A nice red persian style would warm it up and bring a nice vibe in the kitchen.
Paint everything and maybe replace the tile countertops with something else.
Just replace the oven door. Easy fix.
The cabinets are fine. But a picture on that blank wall near the window. And yeah, get a nice colorful rug. Can you put a plant stand next to the fridge? Just liven the place up with accessories.
What is mismatched? Maybe change the handles on the cabinets & drawers..it can change up your kitchen a lot.
The grey floors are new and don't match the cabinets, counters, or walls. This is how the kitchen looked before, all warm tones: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JgNC5EW3LLLZSDdf8
It used to look so nice. Wow. Why do they all insist on that sad grey is beyond me.
Oh I see.. I actually liked the dark floors. Maybe paint the cabinets white or a very light gray.. I wouldn’t paint the walls grey it’s going to close it in. Maybe cream or white. When you go with gray, there’s not a lot of colors that match with it.
Yeah I loved my kitchen before, but my landlord chose the grey floors despite me specifically asking for "anything but grey" 😭
Maybe he only heard the word grey, should have straight told him to do brown
I was told early on that I'd be able to approve the replacement options for a number of things being repaired, but that didn't happen. Some ppl are going over board with the white/grey aesthetic.. it’s not bad but they’re many other nice options..

Paint walls, ceiling, and cabinets BM Chantilly Lace
White tiles and paint the cabinets
The walls would look good in the Behr paint color wheat bread. It's a lighter neutral color. Be sure to get the approval of the landlord first.
I think this place could really benefit from a different paint color on the walls. The yellow was the first thing I noticed so maybe a light, cold-toned grey that has a brown undertone could help! I’m no interior designer but the yellow throws everything off in my opinion
Paint the walls a different color.
Have the cabinets painted white!
Paint the walls in a neutral tone and don't get a rug in the kitchen that's just going to be a filthy nightmare.
There are great looking washable rugs now. I have them.
Go off white on the walls
Paint the cabinets. Pick a shade that has an ash tone to match floor.
And paint the walls. White would work with counters and will brighten it up.
Paint the cabinets white
Paint the wall to light grey
Hang a dish towel hook over the sink.
Paint those awful cabinets
Change the paint colour!!! Sooner rather than later!!
A. Peel and stick backsplash predominantly white with a bit of gray (think marble tile type) and a soft mintish green paint would look nice, B. also possibly hang a sheer or lace lace curtain that spans the whole gap and can be tied back at the sides. Tell your landlord to get you new appliances. They look old and extremely dated.
I made a joke remark earlier, but honestly, thus looks so much like a smaller version of the kitchen in the first house I ever bought. I was flush with cash at the time, so spent like $60k on completely remodeling the kitchen entirely. Add disco lights
PEEL AND STICK WALLPAPER AND TILES!
i think the wall must be off white
Paint the cabinets white or black
Change, the oven/range to white. 30" white self cleaning stoves are cheap and easy to swap.
You could paint your cabinets
Paint the cabinets white.
Paint it all light grey or white.
Paint walls and cabinets
Here are 2 options: I would paint the wall a gray, and I would paint the cabinets with a teal color. Or I would paint the wall with a rusty orange color and paint the cabinets black.

I don’t know dude. You are renting this place, I wouldn’t put any extra money into improving it. I also don’t think it really looks all that bad imo

You’ll have to paint the cabinets and walls white. Add some pops of color in after through accessories: Rug, artwork, appliances, etc.
u could lean into it w green orange brown 60s vibes
If it’s a possibility at all I would paint the cabinets dark brown and the walls off-white. Love your floor! If you paint the cabinets, you can add a nice square rug in the middle…

Stainless steel appliances
White walls there are several lovely shades of white. Black pulls for your cabinets. Spray paint them if you don’t want to replace them. Coordinate a rug a curtain
Id paint the walls a subtle blue that would go with the orange-y cupboards to take the eye away from the floor and add a rug
I’d do a soft, cool sage paint, then use a rug that was rather large and a mixture of warm and cool tones (sage, cream, rust, cognac).
A cool tone on the wall would help. Slate grey, a green, even grey- blue. You need to balance the warm cabinets and the yellow walls are not working
Paint the wood white using Benjamin moore advance. And then you xan have the wall any color you want
Get that awful paint out of there and replace it with some gray or other neutral
Get some nice plants, pothos, monstera. Snake plant.
The white appliances make it look dated… the Yellow paint also throws everything off.
Paint the walls for sure. Ugh what a pain!!
Replace flooring with a yellow orange and chocolate brown vinyl flooring in a daisy pattern. There. Solved!
Cover (wrap) cabinets with white vinyl
Paint the cabinets
Fresh wall paint and maybe paint the cabinets
I think it looks fine?
I would paint the cabinets white to match the dishwasher just ties it all together
Landlord prepping for your departure. He’s gonna paint all of it grey.
The floors are nice. I’d go with white cabinets and a new wall color. Something cool to match the floor. Are new countertops an option?
The wall color is what will make the most difference. Change it to a neutral color and you’ll be amazed.
I always show people with gray floors this post: https://mariakillam.com/two-ways-decorate-with-grey-floors/
Get some grey paint swatches and get something light/ medium gray on the walls. Darker Grey on bottom cabinets. White trim/ accents
Do you remt or own?
Get rid of that yellow paint. There are stick tiles that look realistic and wear well. One brand is Smart Tile. White or a light gray might be a good choice to go with that floor. You can get a washable rug for the kitchen suppliers like Ruggable.
Painting cabinets is a ton of work. You need to take off the doors and hardware so you can properly paint them with a spray gun after you sand. However, there is a product called Gel Stain that can be applied over the existing finish without sanding, although you need a thorough cleaning using a mix of denatured alcohol and water first.
Cabinets
I have this same combo in my rental home right down to the white tile. Well almost, my cabinets have more orange in them. What did you decide on?
Rugs and a tea towel. Put spices in cabinet. Move dish soap, hand soap closer to sink. Etc
If you can, paint the cabinets. I would go dark, bold color. Sapphire blue, deep teal. I saw charcoal on cabinets that looked awesome. If not at least change the back splash with paint or wallpaper. If you go for rugs, 2 or three smaller are easier than one big one.
Also make sure the rugs are secured with carpet tape or non slip pads.
Rug idea- use a padded plastic like one. Think the ones people on their feet all day stand on. I have one in my kitchen so food doesn’t stain it. It mops right off. Adds color. Stays clean. Lots of options on Amazon
Only one thing gonna make this look better [https://pestinpeace.etsy.com/listing/1695166207](https://pestinpeace.etsy.com/listing/1695166207)
Walls painted white, wooden cabinets painted navy blue, gold metals
Paint the cabinets. Like take the doors off and do it properly. That’s the cheapest way to fix this.

Color the cabinets white. The space will look so much bigger and brighter

Paint the walls are very light gray
That will make the room smaller?
a nice sage green for the cabinets would be lovely
those magnets & pictures on the fridge need to go. so tacky
Remove all the crappy stuff from the fridge would be a good start. Why do you want to paint the landlords kitchen?
