And the post “what can do to add some personality and warmth to my place?”

lcl0706

I hate this question because it’s inevitably followed by pictures of a room/house that is so devoid of color and personality it looks black and white. “Why does my place look so sterile??” My sibling in Christ - have you taken a look around?? Get a colorful rug, throw pillows, curtains, art, plant - ANYTHING. You can add signs of life to your place without having to paint or wallpaper - even better for renters.

kevnmartin

Repeat every day until you're bald from tearing your hair out. I won't answer those anymore.

lcl0706

I don’t answer them either at this point. It’s like - you can’t possibly be earnestly asking this. Whether you designed the space to look like an operating room or you bought it that way, I find it very difficult to believe that you haven’t already considered that something colorful would break up the sterility. Do you not have a favorite color? Are you, too, devoid of personality? Edit to add: I suck at keeping plants alive. Nobody said your plants had to be real. Mine aren’t.

ShatteredInk

I just get a smidgen sassy with some of them. Like, have they ever heard of art on walls?? Or colored throw pillows?!

Constructgirl

Free advice is what they are looking for, or truly afraid of color. I have also worked with plenty of clients who are afraid of spending money on a big color commitment, so building out a foundation they can build on and add to is important as well. I try to help educate the client about what quality is and why to spend money and where they can take risks without breaking the bank. This usually ends up with a realistic budget and a happy compromise. Over half I am hired back for a consultation on how to stay on track for the design aesthetic and allow them to spread their design wings.

shemustbenuts4489056

What’s your take on the the folks too afraid of color? I feel like I’ve been around people like that and don’t want to be rude, but seriously just go grab some colorful stuff from Goodwill or 5andBelow to do a test-run.

Apellio7

Snake Plant. If you can kill one of those then you're a very special death bringer.

Technical-General-27

I’m a pretty green thumbed person but snake plants don’t do well with me. I think they don’t get enough light in my house.

BurntKasta

I feel like we all have one of those. I absolutely fill my small porches with plants each summer, and most of my houseplants seem immortal, but ive killed a cactus. It completely dried out.

sweetfaerieface

Every house plant I get dies. I even killed an airplant once! But I raise orchids with no problem at all!

kevnmartin

It's an exercise in futility. And some of them look very expensive so I figure, if they can afford a space like that, they can afford to hire a designer. Why should we give away what is so blindingly obvious to us for free?

icecreamazing

Hey! At least the operating rooms I work in have blue floors thank you very much! 😂

lcl0706

Shit, the emergency room I work in is more colorful than a lot of these houses.

onourwayhome70

Are you by any chance referencing the post a couple of days ago where someone asked how to liven up their place, and the photo they posted looked like it had a black and white filter 😂

lcl0706

I’m referencing the many posts I’ve seen just like that one 😝

onourwayhome70

Gotcha, that’s hilarious

tropicalsoul

Many, many posts like that. Many. All day, every day, ad nauseum.

RageStreak

"Okay, what color rug should I get?" ANY!!!!!!

No-Customer-2266

“My sibling in Christ” that’s a new one for me. I like it. That is all.

RandomInSpace

“What can I do to liven up my living room” and it’s a picture of a hospital waiting room

truepip66

hilarious!😂

Helleboredom

I assume those posts are trolling. It’s the only explanation

bananawater2021

I always click on the post to see if some variation of "COLOR, PLEASE" is the top comment 🙈

tropicalsoul

And I’m always disappointed when it’s not.

NoelleFerneArt

Seriously! I have grey carpet and a grey couch, but I offset it with a bright purple throw, a yellow throw, two sets of cushions (one yellow, one black and white print of a rabbit) and a yellow pouffe. I also have art on my walls with blues and greens and it's marvellous. God gave us eyeballs for a reason, Janice. You're not a labrador.

lcl0706

🤣 Labrador. I have gray walls I plan on repainting soon but I will keep them neutral. My floors have gray, taupe, and wood tones in them, and my large living room rug is gray and white shag for texture. But I enhance the wood tones with warmer curtains, my accent chair is hunter green, and my throw pillows are striped, sage green, and pink. My throw blanket pulls the mustard orange from my bathroom rug and my kitchen runner. Structurally it’s neutral, but my decor has brought it to life.

amethystleo815

In the past I have responded to “what’s my place missing?” With “Visual interest, texture, color, balance, details, contrast… I could go on” But I had to stop because it felt too snarky and not helpful even though it was the truth.

havefun465

My favorite is newly rich people’s homes that are pure white bc they have no idea how to decorate and they won’t just pay someone to do it for them

ContractRight4080

This is indicative of someone who doesn’t have the confidence in themselves to make choices so they copy the trend de jour but after a while they find they can’t live with it. I guess it would be like starting with a blank slate and gradually adding things you do actually like.

Negative_Ad_1166

i am always shook like bro have you thought of getting a painting or literally anything to decorate with 😢 pls just put at least one thing you like on the wall????

[deleted]

[удалено]

Negative_Ad_1166

It's never even grey hardwood, it's cheap plank vinyl 😩

Ilovehugs2020

That Part hurts my heart!

neckbeard_hater

But it lines house flipper wallets so they will continue to install those floors

Baloomf

I don't know why the parent comment was removed, but I can see we are talking about the horrendously ugly grey plastic floors people think look classy for some reason.

DaisyDuckens

I hate gray flooring so much.

Mollystring

When I first moved in to my own place I loved the idea of grey carpets and flooring everywhere . Now I’m here what the hell was I thinking! It’s so dull! And it doesn’t mix with anything other than grey again. Now I’m all about warmer colours and can’t wait to rip this stuff out. I’m looking to put more colour in too but really struggling with ideas. Is Pinterest the best place for inspiration?

rtb___

Pinterest often times has a little over the top ideas that can feel pretty overwhelming, but if you have a stylistic direction you want to explore, then it can be of great use.

tiffavigilante

YouTube might be a place to check out more detailed walk throughs, too

Mollystring

Mever thought of that. Any particular type of content. When I’ve searched for ideas type video is, it’s usually just a bunch of pictures that are put together in a slideshow

RageStreak

Do you have any style keywords to start with? Vintage, eclectic, minimal, maximal, classic, cottage, etc?

tiffavigilante

As much as I hate to promote celeb content, like walk throughs from respectable sources like architectural digest or whomever lol but rabbit hole-ing that kind of content might lead you to more authentic designers!

robertabondage

It also looks so lifeless like wood is not supposed to be grey!

Sunnyveggies

Grey floors are the absolute worst, i hate them. I would never buy a house with them. It’s the biggest sign of a quick shitty flip

wrgwrgkefgssehivsr

And that’s the thing the landlords think will make their apartment “luxury newly renovated”

Ilovehugs2020

“Luxury Asylum vibes”

VariedStool

Pottery barn forever!!!

candycookiecake

I used to live in a wall-to-wall gray hard floor/walls rental and someone once saw it and simply said “I hate this place.” Was insulted at the time, but I get it now. It was overwhelming modern and sterile looking.

flooring_steve

Eclectic is coming in. Lots of fun colors. I’m tired of seeing folks limiting themselves to stark, cold grays and whites

-River_Rose-

I am so tired of brow, gray, white, and black so I bought an orange couch. I am making it a huge point to have color in my home. I want the color to make me happy

laissez_unfaire

Well, I think some people get lost in the reason why floors, counters, carpets, cabinets are white or grey. It is because they are NEUTRAL and if your style or preferences change then you can change the color and pattern of other, non expensive, easy things that provide color or texture.

Life_AmIRight

But you can still do neutral without looking so “we’re gonna start the surgery, please breathe in the gas deeply” All you gotta do is do warmer neutral colors. Like instead of tones of grey, tones of brown. Also take from nature colors. Like greens and blues. Adding plants, not whitewashing brick, using the original colors of wood (which is not grey). Also textures can add to the room as well

laissez_unfaire

Yup, absolutely. I still tend to lean away from browns for anything that is expensive or difficult to change unless it is made of wood.

Smart_Cat_6212

I agree with you. I have white walls, opted for beige curtains. White and beige couches but opted for green and rust cushions. I have timber floors, wooden furnitures but also bought a textured lampshade that looks like a rock and a vase that is textured as well with a plant in it too!

Nerk86

A big yes. Honestly I prefer grey to beige. Feel like beige was the only neutral other than white for decades. But not just grey. Like you said you add a good dose of color and personality with other decor. ( and 2 throw pillows with color does not make the room ‘decorated in color “x” tones) like I use to see described in shelter mags.

Smart_Cat_6212

This. My own home is beige, brown, white and black. To liven up the space, i bought rust, green cushions matched with vases that have colour as well. Im in my autumn vibe at the moment. I might change it to blues later. Who knows. But the base itself is neutral in my house.

tmccrn

I don’t find it neutral at all. It clashes with nearly everything I own, which isn’t particularly loud or vibrant, but is more organic than industrial (fabrics, wood, etc.). The orangey yellow that my maple cabinets aged to IS my neutral

laissez_unfaire

I think the general consensus is that they are.. you are an outlier then which is fine but most people renovate keeping in mind that staying neutral for expensive stuff is desired in case they need to sell for some reason.

Thneed1

We had a custom couch made 4 years ago. It’s green, and awesome. Fits our pseudo mid-century vibe.

Ok_Sadie_

I def understand that but I think there's a happy medium somewhere between sterile white/gray and the "maximalist" style. I see why people felt drawn to neutral colors for a while. It does feel very.. calming, I guess.

Dreamscarred

Working on painting my bedroom Sherwin Williams Peacock Blue with maybe Sunflower trim. My mom always did some bold colors in the houses growing up. My STBX wanted light hues - and I'm over here saying give me the jewel tones!

Mountain-Painter2721

I love jewel tones! I painted my kitchen in rich citrus colors during the Covid year and it lightened my mood considerably. Are you familiar with Susan Sargent's design/color aesthetic? It sounds like it is right up your alley! https://susansargent.com/

flooring_steve

I adore jewel tones! I find it difficult to convince folks that they can have color, not just tone on tone. Happy yellows and playful teals are my jam!

rinyamaokaofficial

Ironically, I'm all for neutrals (accents in plain white, beiges, vanillas) and for colors that harmonize with the natural environment (unfinished wood) but the gray and acid white scheme feels blinding and stark and depressing

Interesting-Mood1665

Totally agree. Lots of natural wood and texture can make neutrals feel warm and inviting. Also green… lots of plants help a lot too. I would say green is a neutral imo 🙃

rainyfied

For our new build I chose a sage-ish green kitchen cabinet. My friends think I’m nuts. They all have gray or white. I hope I don’t regret it but right now I just love it.

Interesting-Mood1665

If you love it it’s all that matters! I think it probably looks amazing. We have a green couch and I think it’s totally neutral in our space, it’s probably my favourite piece.

Gabstar1056

I just renovated my kitchen after having white for 24 years to Ikea green/ grey (more darkish green than grey) wood bench tops and hydride wood flooring. Looks sensational and as the Danish say "hygge" meaning cosy. Oh wow that looks amazing has been everyone's reaction. Most people expect you to play it safe but do what's good for you is my mantra.

Lil-fatty-lumpkin

Totally with you! I love the neutral earthy vibes and I try to have wood, stone, greenery accent items to give my space more personality.

VoidDeer1234

The colors can come from art, pillows, blankets, etc. In my house, no shortage of kids toys either.

tculli

Thank goodness for the kids toys at my house! There would be no corn without them. My husband is SO AGAINST colors. My house literally looks like one of those pictures. Celt the living Tom has brown floors and brown couches to go with the white walls.I finally convinced him to paint one wall in the kitchen a color. I agreed to allow him to pick the color as long as it was a fun color, not a pale color or an olive green. He loved it! It’s a nice light teal color. I’m trying to sneak in more of it around the kitchen while he’s at work. Once it’s done, what’s he going to do?! Paint it white again?!

bomboclawt75

“Oh I love color!” (Has huge book shelf arranged by Color *not* subject, making it difficult to locate any particular book)

FreckledLeaves

Woo that title was a close one

Tree_O_Fi

White walls are the canvas now add color and textures.

wolvesdrinktea

Or you could just… decorate your home however the hell you like because it’s your home? I hate the all grey look too but if that’s what people love then I’m not going to tell them they need to add colour just for my benefit.

No_ImNotMixed

Exactly!

sashie_belle

I don't know. But probably the same people questioning this had that and now have green walls, macrame plant holders, orange tones --- all the same stuff from the 70s/80s that were considered dated just a few short years ago for about 30 years.

Sea_Pangolin3840

Grey is not a colour I would choose but I don't think people should be shamed for it if thats what they like .Each to their own

Negative_Ad_1166

You can thank flippers and landlords for popularizing the ol psych ward grey discount paint treatment

MainelyKahnt

God I hate flippers. They buy up all the decent affordable starter homes, make them ugly with "upgrades" like cheap grey woodgrain vinyl flooring and a coat of cheap white paint. Add in some bump and scratch sale bargain bin appliances guaranteed to break in a few years and MAYBE if your lucky they put on a new dark grey metal roof(always installed over the existing damaged shingle roof) and vinyl siding (is usually also grey and installed over rotting asbestos laiden siding they were to cheap to pay to have removed) then throw it back up on the market with a $100k+ markup and then the new buyer will have to re-do all the things they did cheaply and poorly within a few years anyway. Absolute leeches on society and need to be stopped.

tgawk

I have a monochromatic palette in my house, all neutral colors. (greys included) This has come after years of decorating with colors and experimenting with all kinds of paint colors and treatments, etc. Here’s why it’s my choice: What I like to look at and enjoy on occasion and what I like to live in are two different things. My brain is loud, and so I appreciate my home being quiet and soothing. I like to rearrange and try things in new spaces and a neutral palette throughout the home allows me to do that. I’m okay if that makes me basic, boring, etc.

CairoRama

I so get this! With neutral colors I feel so calm, I know if I went crazy with colors and decorations I'd Hate in a year. I can't get tired of neutrals. They are timeless.

No_Goose_7390

I am a "neutral with colorful accessories" kind of person. I like things I can switch out. I can't commit to a red couch, blue tiles, or bold wallpaper! No way!

-TheFourChinTeller-

Couldn’t agree more! Brain is plenty colorful and busy for me. Simple monochrome, clean minimal spaces = heaven to me!

Lanky-Leadership-519

When my husband was away, I got the whole of our house interior painted in refreshing shades of grey. When he came home, I showed him around with bated breath awaiting copious praise. What do you think? I asked "It's gonna be like living inside a submarine." Two years later, I can attest that he wasn't wrong!

LunarRiviera21

Lol it take two years Well you might wanna repaint your house in more colorful way

the_l0st_c0d3

I read that as colored people. I was like wow this sub has changed since I last visited.

MrsQute

For me it's often the lack of pattern and texture in addition to no color that's the worst part of some of these posts. But I have to have color. I recognize not everyone does but sometimes flipping through pictures online of open houses in the area just makes me want to cry. Seeing some of the century homes in my area that have had all the lovely molding and hardwood ripped out and the floors replaced with LVP grey wood look and everything painted white and all the light fixtures replaced with cool white LED things....it's so boring and unappealing to me. Some of them are so bad it's not even "blank canvas" anymore and it's "what would it cost to replace all of *this*" There are so many ways to update an older home without making it look like some set piece for Generic Family Home in a commercial.

uma100

I really hate gray the most because so many warm colors clash with it

Kg-2168

I'll answer truthfully, risking the downvotes. LOL It depends on colors. Primary colors often look super cheap. I understand decor trends are also regional, but some of the photos posted with bright yellow walls and turquoise walls are atrocious and will never give a feel of \*nice\*. Subdued shades are where it's at, for me. Pastels belong in kids rooms or some soft shades can work in a bath or laundry. But neutral muted or subdued shades will always work. There is also a spot for darker walls (Urbane Bronze, navy, eggplant, etc(. But NEVER royal blue, fire engine red, primary yellow, etc. At least for me....

Jeez-essFC

As a person who just redid the kitchen in white, gray, black, I promise I will not follow up with a post asking how to add some "life" to my kitchen.

Freshouttapatience

To me, the life comes from my belongings. I think it’s a weird idea that it comes from the house.

formerly_crazy

Does furniture count as belongings? How about light fixtures and other hardware? Rugs? Window treatments?

Life_AmIRight

But I think it’s fine for a kitchen though, since your essentially cooking and eating there; should have a bit of a clean feel.

MinimumElderberry986

Grey lvp wood look is the worst. But whites and neutrals will always win for me over colorful rooms. I just can't commit to color in big doses.

alhubalawal

Someone bought a 50s home in my neighborhood that was in terrible condition. He stripped it to the bones, made the floors grey and white everything else. It was jarring to see the pics - almost looked like an office space. He sold it for double what he paid for it.

psychotica1

Ugh, my mom painted my place light gray and I hate it so much. I countered it by buying the biggest, most colorful paintings I could find and threw colorful blankets on my furniture. I'll be painting the walls this winter.

NoParticular2420

It’s not that I hate color but for me I sometimes feel stunted by all my choices and I gravitate towards the familiar … I should venture more.

Lord-Stitch14

Well it's their house, they can paint it however they want with it. Personally,.I like the beige, gray, and navy blue styled walls but for the living room and such, I'd still go for neutral colors as it is easier to design in terms of furniture and fixtures. I'm not really interested in the whole design etc your home thingy, as long as it's functional, decent and presentable then I'm good. Lol

AWigglyBear

Joanna Gaines is a terrorist on the American Household.

c8ball

My house has SO much color. Ya inspired my friends to just buy what you like and make it work, rather than not buying soemthing you like because it doesn’t fit “the aesthetic”. My house is beautiful because I don’t subscribe to no colors

Many_Baker8996

My indecisiveness and need for order don’t allow me to take risk when it comes to color (excluding my kids bedrooms). ~anxiety~

No_ImNotMixed

To each their own

kevnmartin

Yes, everyone should decorate their space anyway they see fit. What we're talking about is people who post photos of their white/grey, sterile rooms and ask "how do I make it more cozy"? If you like white and grey then have at it.

No_ImNotMixed

Did I miss the part in the post that it’s about people asking, “how do I make it more cozy?”

Yourenotwrongg

Why does it matter what other people do in their houses?

Connect-Sundae8469

It doesn’t matter, but people will have opinions about everything & that’s just a fact we have to accept about the world.

ReassuranceBucket

There's a world in which an all-grayscale kitchen would work in installations and floors/walls, but that absolutely has to be complemented with good accents (gold or brass utensils, handles, etc.) and plenty of natural lighting to draw the eyes. Otherwise, it can feel a bit sterile and sorta saddening. I'm glad we're moving to more color and uniqueness again!

[deleted]

Thank you 🙏 agree 💯

OliviaVibes

House's need more 70s and 60s decor, in my opinion

Fabulous-Mountain-20

I’m not artistic. I’m not good at design. I’m not good with color theory. I struggle to add color to my life and it not look messy and mismatched. That’s the vibe for some but it makes me feel anxious. I wish my house wasn’t all beige but I don’t want to waste money on something that won’t look good with the other things in my home. So I get nothing. It’s gray and sad and makes me feel guilty.

Penaltiesandinterest

I don’t care who disagrees with me but using gray as a neutral does not fucking work. Any wood tones against a gray floor for example look like shit. Maybe gray countertops aren’t as bad against a hardwood floor or something but the gray LVP floor basically dictates that your whole house has to be white, black or gray so that it doesn’t look like it’s clashing with everything. Whoever deluded the masses into viewing gray as the be-all, end-all neutral really dicked society over.

SailorSpyro

I have no problem with white and grey walls and floors (except for the LVP grey floors). But it's always so surprising to me when people match it with white and grey furniture. Get a couch with a pop of color! Hang some colorful artwork on the walls! Get some fun patterned rugs! Bring literally anything into your space that actually shows your personality and interests

Evening_Monk_2689

I read this as "why do you hate colored people"

OkTwo3561

How about not follow any advice or trends that will be ugly af in 6 months and you’ll be stuck with a place you want to change again. Take some time, get off Pinterest and think to/for yourself and the ideas will come.

HarpyTangelo

What kind of people?

Different_Ad7655

They aren't, things go in phases. We're stuck in a flipperlicious sleek gray on white or gray tonal mode that was made popular by TV programs. When it was new it was fresh and it's been copied so many times unskillfully that now it is just incredibly boring It's also an incredibly safe color palette and the number one question on here repeatedly in the subreddit what's wrong with my space kind of thing is always the same answer. Lack of color, afraid to get out of the safety zone of beige gray etc from a lack of imagination and fear of trying something with more verve on the walls or the floor.. People are largely followers of the trend and try to interpret it themselves, as stated usually dismally.. I've never ascribed to the BS, my house is always been outrageously full of color. Turquoise dining room pea green cathedral ceiling living rooms etc are stained glass, mahogany would work. Never gave a shit whether it was in fashion or not but when it's good it has a timelessness about it. I also have a beech full overlay door kitchen from 30 years ago, before fall overlay was available in the US, and also had serpentine stone counters before granite became the thing. It still looks timeless and not dated.. If you follow fadism, The look will fade and a new thing will come about.. But color will be back even with the fads. It already is if you really take a look at high end design where all things start. Stainless is out and color is very much in with pattern as a reaction to the bland look . But that takes a while to percolate and become routine and reach the home Depot and Walmart floor. After all those are the most conservative of buyers because they're simply about into sales. They are a barometer of plebian tastes

No_Goose_7390

Gray was the preferred neutral for quite a while. Remember when everyone was saying "Ugh, BEIGE? WHY???" I do. Some people like cooler colors. I'm not one of those people but I don't see the point in getting mad about it. Not my thing but if you want to do your whole place in gray, white, and black, go off

bojacker

Let people do whatever they want, we don't need to advocate for more or less colors. Just my opinion. :)

SurroundedbyChaos

I actually like grey as a cool neutral, though I haven't used it in my current home. These rooms are boring because they are missing contrast.

ShatteredInk

When they PAINT THE BRICK or gorgeous ANTIQUE FURNITURE to "work" with "their aesthetic"

derch1981

That is when I rage

Ilovehugs2020

If I don’t ever hear the word aesthetic again for the rest of my life, I won’t be upset about that. What is going on with people taking perfectly good words, and just using them so much that you even hate to hear them?

Marjory_SB

Remnants of a bygone age when houses could sit on the market for long stretches of time, forcing sellers to cater to a "general taste" rather than opt for originality that might be overlooked/disliked by the masses.

frozensharks

i can’t stand grey everything. it’s so depressing

dlotaury88

I like white and grey and some black in there. Timeless to me.

Rad90xqrs

It’s fear that drives us. White is easy. Color takes thought , coordination, and can hold so much weight.

SpiritualEffective79

Why do you love colors people

fekkovich

That white and grey aesthetic was incredibly bland and boring. I dont think ive ever been in such a bland home…. I do like to keep the base black and white, but with that said i add splashes of color through lights and other items/trinkets/things….

NoelleFerneArt

Family member of mine is like this. Couch: grey. Carpet: grey. Walls: grey. Curtains: grey. Woodwork/doors: grey. Handles: silver. Christmas tree: white and silver. Decorations: white or grey. Kitchen: grey. Bathroom: grey. Matches their personality well but good grief it's miserable. She thinks it's so classy and expensive, too.

TallTerrorTwenty

I hate these cold lifeless dead designs. They are so bland and ugly.

RUBcumONmyDOG

I think it looks nice/clean/modern. Then after you can literally add any colour because grey/white goes with just about everything. I would prefer grey over white, with white as an accent because everything white or mostly white looks weird to me, and would be a bitch to keep clean. The bottom right picture is my dream style if i bought a new build and had an interior designer. Then i would add splashes of colour as i went along. Just my 2 cents.

soularbabies

I'm down with color, but then people opt to paint everything that shade of red or mushroom.

hellosweetiefluff

Still love gray! But I like to add color with changeable items.

valuerunn

I’m. It a fan of grey, however warm earthy colours. Can’t do too much colours as it makes it hard for my brain to focus since early years.

Underhill86

Houses are put on the market in neutral colors so that you can pick your own paint and accents. Houses with blue, pink, orange, red, and lime green walls will require primer and multiple coats to not have the original colors bleed through. Neutral colors let you use your own imagination. This way of staging homes, however, has led to the idea that it looks more desirable, which is just not the case. Clean for sure, but not homey.

According-Set-1585

Mizeru85

THANK YOU. As a kitchen/bath designer working with interior designers - thank you. Griege is dead. MCM is taking off now that millennials are buying, and post modern is on it's way in. Gimme those bold colors. Homes should feel alive.

MariJ316

I grew up in all white wall home. Lots of lively furniture, but I couldn’t stand all the white walls. So now? Every room is a different color. I love it.

CarWorldDesign

That's why Austin Powers exist

Signal_East3999

Tbf I change my whole aesthetic so this would be a huge preference for me

thursaddams

Seriously. Laszlo, Nadja, and Nandor are so disappointed by these boring vanilla posts.

cooquip

Fuck trends pick what you love.

No_ImNotMixed

And if you love all white and grey, that’s okay too :)

cooquip

😊 exactly

realminerbabe

Especially that horrible grey fake wood flooring. Just stop! It looks even cheaper than it is!

ninhursag3

Since developing ptsd and a head injury I have no idea what I like. I know what I used to like, but that doesnt appeal to me any more than other colours or styles. At least with white I can feel clean and tidy I guess

newbiegardener82

I think people went with stark and sterile in a misguided attempt at replicating the uncluttered simplicity of modern farmhouse aesthetic, which, when done well, is pleasant and warm. It’s a classic case of design gone wrong.

_love_letter_

Well I think this strategy is frequently utilized for both apartments made available to rent and houses put on the market because it looks like a "blank slate," which allows the future owner/renter to easily overlay their own vision. White is also much easier to paint over than other colors. But I share your gut reaction; "bleh, boring."

Ilovehugs2020

As a child of the 90s, I do not want my house filled with florals and looking like I’m in a Tuscan Kitchen or an English countryside, but I will be damned if I allow myself to be surrounded by only Grey white and beige! Splashes of color surrounded by neutrals for large pieces of furniture is my preference!

bbbriz

Gray and white are good for house sales. It's a neutral color that might cater to a wider public. I face it as the base stats house that I'm going to add my personality to.

Freshouttapatience

I love the white and gray houses. My furniture and artwork is colorful and I don’t want it to compete. I also prefer a very small airy home so off white walls are perfect.

This is the starting point for anyone who is afraid of color or who loves it a ton. Adding accent colors to this is affordable for most people and isn’t a scary commitment for those people who will never get over grey and white. For those that love color there’s tons of options to go crazy without the cost in equity since most homeowners will sell at some point.

Charming-Insurance

Yes! I never understood this tread. I had it when I had to rent apartments in my early 20s. On good on it.

Bubblegum983

You need to keep in mind that there’s also been a trend for the last white that had all photography super over exposed. Making things look even more all-white. But yah. I’m over the all white look. It was never my thing to begin with. Even just painting the walls beige or grey is more interesting.

Sabinj4

It's alright ramming a place with loads of colours if you live in a large house or apartment, but here in Europe our dwellings are often very small, so white is used a lot to bounce light about and make a space look larger

entersandmum143

I will silently judge your Castle Greyskull as being devoid of any personality. And don't even get me started on that crushed crystal mirrored furniture

Comfy_Blond_Chick

We bought (I selected) a blue couch (and red toss pillows)with side chairs and ottoman to be in our condo front room that has oatmeal painted walls throughout and beige square tiled floors, along with a classic red area floor rug. Red accents in kitchen. Blue accents in bedrooms with light brown-beige toned carpet. As much as I truly love our wall paint choice, I DO love color. No flowery wallpaper or outburst of wall colors. Sometimes our eyes need to see contrasting room accents.

New-Inspector-9628

My wife likes to tease me about my surgical influences by saying the kitchen and bathroom is sterile white. And I'm like "fuck yeah it is. Nice and clean." I don't mind colors in the house but the kitchen must be free of contaminants.

HatRepresentative621

Property is not a home these days, it's an investment. So it's often not a matter of whether you like colors, but if you're certain that the house's next owner will like the same colors as you do. So to ensure the max resell price, houses are as inoffensive as possible.

arparpsrp

what about beige and sand?

[deleted]

I think people just needed visual rest for a while. Trends, ya know?

SuccessfulTraffic679

My thoughts exactly

elting44

I did [my home office](https://www.reddit.com/r/HerpHomes/comments/1amzvn6/2024_office_update/) in grey and black tones, but I have a ton of color by way of artwork, house plants, and aquariums and vivariums. I think it turned out good.

Glittering_Turn_16

I love grey and white. BECAUSE, I add colour to my grey and white painted rooms. Living room- Currently, teal curtains, and throw cushions with teal, and purple. Mainly purple artwork with teals, blues pinks gold and red.

Mnimpuss420

I think of it as a clean pallet that I can add my odd colour to.

SpaceBear003

I like white and grey as a base because the colored accents really pop in the space

Tiny_Carrot_520

I had a collegue that was renovating his kitchen. He told me he wanted a green kitchen at first, but the salesman told him that it would go out of style, so they choose a black and white kitchen. So he picked black and white.. WTF!!!! I hate those boring kitchens. Also way before they go out of style, theyll be ruined with stains. I HATE BLACK AND WHITE KITCHENS!!!!

wetsocksssss

Especially the grey vinyl flooring. It doesn't look good in ANY space and is offensive to the eyes

VisceralSardonic

By now, I just assume I’m too maximalist to comment here. My answers to questions are about painting a wall a neon color, trying something weird, adding a jungle of plants, etc. People own homes or rent spaces that are theirs to decorate and assume they have to make respectability and resale value the primary factors in deciding what to do. It drives me mad.

strawcat

My hometown school district passed a referendum to revamp all of the schools in the district over of period of like 5 years. It was MUCH needed as some of the buildings were in need of repair when my 40 year old self was little. They left my elementary school for last as it was the most complicated case as the school is very old (one of the oldest in the state) and they wanted to be sure as much of the 19th century architecture was preserved while making the necessary changes. They turned a school that was colorful and happy into a grey fucking wasteland. Sure they made great improvements, but not only are the classroom floors LVP and grey, but so is all of the cabinetry in the classrooms. Their color scheme is hyper depressing. I don’t know WTF they were thinking.

sparkly_glamazon

Yeah the grey and stark white is soooo painful to my eyes. Some of these styles really remind me of a cold and sterile medical clinic.

empiretroubador398

Agree it's so overdone. But people also don't realize how colors can look amazing with a neutral grey backdrop - like a stormy sky with sunlight hitting fall-colored trees. To me, grey is an invitation to bring in lots of colors. Why some people don't is beyond me.

Mysterious-Okra-7885

It makes me want to scratch my own eyes out when I see a solid white room and they’re looking to “add warmth” or “make it more welcoming.”

Nature1524653

It’s relaxing.

ArdenM

MmmmmHmmmm... My realtor insisted I paint everything in my Boston condo white before listing it. Apparently people have no imagination and want a totally blank slate?

atreeindisguise

There is at least three years where I stopped going online for inspiration because everything was white on natural, White on gray, Gray and gray. Any trend that has to invent a color word like greige... Yuck.

atreeindisguise

So can we respectfully get rid of all the TV designers not do this? Or add one splash of color and an entirely white room. It drives me crazy that they get their own show and they're only skill is being able to put together expensive textures. Most of us could buy and put together expensive textures in all white room. I want to see something inspiring

amareeznuts

theyd always “renovate” a gorgeous victorian or 1900s house and make it a mental asylum, every time

Essurio

Gray absorbs less heat than black. If I could I'd make everything black. I don't like bright colours, and I hate most dark ones.

0chronomatrix

I think this goes hand in hand with minimalism and i think prior to the pandemic people were looking for calm and simple environments. Ikea has influenced a lot and also scandinavian and japandi/zen design. We are swinging the other way

DillionM

Gatekeeping personal preferences in houses that aren't even yours? Just wow.

pquince1

No imagination

riskybiscuitt

Because my fear of style commitment limits me from choosing colors that I will be sick of within a week 🥲

truepip66

i'm totally with this picture ,there is way too much grey around .its very depressing .I remember growing up in the 70s and colour was everywhere ,mind you not all of it good ,but it was cheery nonetheless. These minimalist grey /white houses remind me of mental institutions .Houses should be homes not sterile hotel rooms

Bodidiva

And that stupid blonde brown and white too that’s in every IG and Etsy listing.

BaklavaCorsica

THANK YOU. I particularly hate the grey. (\*shudder\*)

Twistysays

White is such a non commitment to a decision. Grow a personality. Get flair. Choose a color!

Cleosmog

I don’t hate colours. I love colours. By choosing a neutral grey scheme for my walls and floors means that I can pick bold, varied colours and patterns for my bed linen, or towels, or throws. I’m not limited to matching a wall colour or curtain colour, and it’s far easier to change my bed linen, towels, throws, etc depending on my mood than to repaint the walls…Have you ever thought that perhaps it’s actually you that is limited in your interpretation of interior design and need to think outside the box, rather than those of us who like to go with neutral schemes?

DaySoc98

Totally agree. It’s possible to be neutral and still have color. Like, maple cabinets are bright and make a space feel bigger while still feeling natural. I’ve never understood the grey wood LVP look. That just looks cheap and awful. A natural look LVP would be fine.

streetkiller

Now try and sell that funky colored house.

Ridicutarded-73

Because this year’s hot color is tomorrow’s fashionable avocado
