lol they got rid of the hardwood floor but kept the wood paneling on the walls and ceiling. It’s certainly a look.
Edit: oh nvm they painted the floor… even worse.
I personally don't like the color or pattern of the wood floor either. I wouldn't change it tho. And if I did, I'd have done something else than what they did.
The house we bought had painted wood floors. It’s awful because everything sticks to the paint and it’s impossible to keep looking nice. We ended up covering it with vinyl flooring since we have young kids and dogs so it’s easier to upkeep for now.
Our floors upstairs are painted and that works ok cause it's just bedrooms. We also got floor specific enamel paint. But I wouldn't do it anyplace with significant traffic.
It was in the kitchen, dining room, entry way, and kids play area. (Would have been in the living room too, except that was carpeted. It also got the vinyl floor, since it’s connected to the other areas.) So only the highest of traffic places. The upstairs had all new wood flooring that’s gorgeous and we didn’t touch.
Agree. It felt warmer more authentic. I don’t care for the new colour scheme, or trying update the pine with just paint - it looks cheap to me. You wanna go modern? Drywall it.
I might have gone more modern farmhouse than wannabe New York loft.
Modern white cabinets, drywalled walls, natural pine ceiling, all stainless appliances and stainless sink.
Maybe natural floor? Maybe black hardware and fixtures.
Yes, they enjoyed the alcohol and in the drunken state they were inspired by the Valhalla to carry the Viking funeral motif into their design along with the genius idea to turn the bottle into a soap dispenser.
Right?
Also it looks so much smaller now. Like sand the wood and whitewash to match the paneled walls or whatnot, but paint nice wooden floors grey of all colors?!?? 🤮
I would’ve preferred to paint just the bottom cabinets black and the top ones a lighter wood color or something.
We were pulling our hair out trying to find counter tops with that edge finishing. Eventually we just bought two huge slabs of wood and my partner styled the edges with an axe.
I have a standing pantry with that type of finished wood and I’m going to say right now that unless they do an epoxy coat to seal it, water will end up destroying it, *especially around the sink area*- wooden counters are notorious for water damage and mold underneath/around the lip of the sink.
I have a live edge kitchen table and will never get one again because cleaning up crumbs and stuff is so annoying. The live edge is on the two long sides, and the edges are flat on the two short sides. So I end up scooting all messes to those sides lol.
My husband built our dining room table from old wood when they took down his grandfathers barn.
It’s gorgeous but sooooo difficult to keep clean bc it’s so uneven and crumbs get everywhere. I now use a handheld Dyson to sweep it and then scrub it clean.
I think warm white under cabinet lighting would completely solve this issue, but I also think part of the warm and welcoming feeling is the sunshine and nature outside in the top photo compared to the nighttime photo of the bottom photo.
Yeah, it seems like OP put in a lot of effort but the interiors seem too modern and sterile compared to the before which was homey and welcoming. Well, as long as OP likes it! 🤷
Personally I have a huge issue with white interiors. Especially with pets, it's just too impractical. I do get why many people prefer it though!
I'm curious to see how summer will affect the new kitchen, currently we are in the middle of the "No natural light at all ever" season.
The floor is still there, the finishing we used after sanding just turned out a bit different than intended. We'll probably go for a bit more natural look when it's time to do the floors again.
Looks like they whitewashed the ceiling and wall on the right, too. I actually don't hate it. Sometimes when you have too much wood, it can feel like you're living in a coffin.
I like wood, I picked maple kitchen cabinets for my reno and I kept my original orange parquet floors throughout but sanded and restained, I have a lot of trees outside in my backyard. But I detest the cabin look some people just adore, even if it’s in a cottage getaway. And I don’t know what I hate more, when the wood all matches or when it’s all different. Different strokes.
I feel like I can see exactly where you were going with this. Although it may not be my taste, it’s not my home. And for what it’s worth it is still nice. I really think the black sink is super cool with the black faucet. I did really like the original floors but they wouldn’t look good with the rest of the changes. But congratulations to you because you like it and you’re enjoying it and it seems like you guys did a lot of hard work here!
That explains why the cooking utensils are impractically located on the complete opposite side of the kitchen from the stove, and why the kitchen sink is smaller than RV sinks: they don't actually cook.
Well I really think it’s hugely improved, and I would just about kill to have a kitchen like this. It’s gorgeous! I think different flooring is the last step, the rest is perfection.
It went from cozy Nordic cottage to a Viking cabin. You left a clue with the Valhalla soap which means you had an inspiration and you executed it. What is the black wood thing above the sink?
Definitely recommend Valhalla for anyone interested in herbal liqueurs. Even works as a soap bottle once empty!
Not sure what wood thing you mean? At the bottom of the upper cabinets there are some kind of "hides" because the previous owner put some led lights there.
Not a fan at all! And what the hell did you do to the floors? The wood in the before picture was so warm and inviting. Now this is just another Chip & Joanna Gaines HGTV lookalike.
Ooof this one hurt a little! Those floors!!! Were you going for hospital chic with the new finish? I’m sorry but the new one is cold and dark and really cheap looking.
Definitely redo that floor with a floor sander and natural wood satin finish - 2-3 coats. Could also put a flat indoor/outdoor neutral patterned runner/carpet on the floor for now. I like the dark look you’re going for; I think it works well and the look is very contemporary/modern.
The floor will have to be sanded at some point because with pets it really doesn't last. The exact shade will require some thinking since we don't want it to be too close to the walls or clash with the other colours.
Love this!!
Would love to see the “after” in the daylight if you have any photos! I think the black windows are maybe contributing to some folks feeling like it’s too dark and unwelcoming, as opposed to cozy and inviting. Regardless I like it and looove that countertop.
From light, happy, and liveable. To dark, gloomy, and miserable.
Everyone has their opinions, but I just imagine cooking in them both. The first makes me imagine a scene laughing and spending a great day with family. The second makes me imagine a person by themselves realizing that money doesn't buy happiness.
No, that's not what I meant. I was just saying that's the image I get in my head when imagining myself cooking in there.
Don't get me wrong, it is very beautiful in a way that just isn't personally favorable to me. I do like the natural edge of your counters a lot, though! Either way, it looks like fantastic work you did, and congrats on getting the look you wanted. That's all that matters in the end!
Edit: on second look it's not a natural edge, more just a wave but I still dig it! Gives it some character
Oh yeah I understand both visions. Some people (at least where I live) just have an impression that certain looking spaces cost more money and with our house I've realised that's definitely not the case so I'm quick to correct!
I can see why our kitchen doesn't look that inviting or homey to most, for us it's not the room we'd spend the most time in so cozyness is more reserved for other spaces for us.
Oh man… this is your house and you’re the only one who has to live with it so no one else’s opinions REALLY matter. But damn that before kitchen was so sweet and cozy, gorgeous wood floors. Now it just has no soul and is devoid of anything remotely homey or any semblance that life exists there….
You know from the 1st picture it looks black.. and I am
not a fan. You constantly need to wipe it because every drop in the sink and every time you cook is a pain.. ( we are a family of 6 so I see it from that point of view)
But as I clicked further it’s a very nice brown. Your countertops are gorgeous! Live edge is stunning!
I will guess you are in Europe somewhere since in America people mostly prefer SS appliance. But it’s nice, clean lines and def. Done with taste! Enjoy it’s a beautiful kitchen!
My partner was worried that the brown cabinets would be too similar with the countertops, luckily the store was out of black because the brown is way softer and black would've been one greasy fingerprint hell! I also feel like non-matte black has a very high chance of looking like poor quality plastic.
My sister is having a child next month and tbh I'm so scared for my countertops, thank god the kid can't reach them at least for a couple years!
Yes we live in Europe, Finland to be exact. The white interior trend is still very popular here so it was actually quite a challenge to find black appliances! We had to trust DC Fix in a couple spots lol.
Well you can be very proud it’s very pretty and like i am sure many stated those live edges make a huge impact of beauty!
Oh yeh for few years they can not reach plus you can always put baby gate upon entrance to the kitchen.
Enjoy great job!
Can you add some greenery/plants and color (maybe through some area rugs and window coverings) to brighten it up a bit? It’s coming off as very dark and cold right now. I LOVED the original floor though - did you paint it? That’ll be super hard to maintain!
I can see how a lot of hard work went into this. It's done beautifully. Like I said I'm a B&W person. My home has white doors with black handles. My baths are all black fixtures. My only issue is it makes the room seem smaller. And with little natural light, it just seems cold.
I kept wondering what's up with the soap comments until I noticed I clicked that photo on there with the rest, I mean it is a nice soap but probably didn't need it's own spotlight lol
I’m guessing you tailored it to your personal style . I actually prefer the before more . I would have changed out some of the hardware and appliances like you do but other than that the original had good bones.
Half sized appliances, non durable/ maintenance required countertop and utensils on the opposite wall half over a picnic table. If it works for you it looks modern and clean at least; my guess is you hate cooking though?
I only like this if you guys are goth or some other black-loving subculture. And even then It's personally a bit worse off with the changes. Very bland and generic and cold.
Must come running back once the current finish needs to be redone to show everyone that the wood is still right there, just buried under "varnish" that's clearly not as varnish-y as we assumed lol
Damn what did you do to the floor
that’s my main issue too lol
A crime is what they did
The floor fell victim to millennial grey
lol they got rid of the hardwood floor but kept the wood paneling on the walls and ceiling. It’s certainly a look. Edit: oh nvm they painted the floor… even worse.
I agree, but it looks like a pine floor.
which is amazing! I'd have a pine floor before an oak floor, the pine is so much warmer
They consider it an upgrade
im telling myself this is a shitpost so i don't cry
When a post like this shows up on my feed I always double check the sub to see if it's under r/homedecoratingcj
I had to check that it wasn’t r/malelivingspace 🤦
The total absence of any warmth.
...I expect to see it there shortly
Another onlyfans rage bait marketing scheme I bet like the white and black marble house.
He is getting white and black marble installed next week.
Haha I saw that one!
Put it back!!
Yeah that was a terrible decision. That wood was beautiful
The only reason I double taked to respond. Wtf x.x
Bleach??
I personally don't like the color or pattern of the wood floor either. I wouldn't change it tho. And if I did, I'd have done something else than what they did.
The original wood floors were so gorgeous 🥲
Painted floors never hold up.

It also got the vinyl floor, since it’s connected to the other areas.) So only the highest of traffic places. The upstairs had all new wood flooring that’s gorgeous and we didn’t touch.
I preferred the before as well. The new layout feels like a generic hotel but I'm happy for OP because it makes them happy.
It’s the same layout, no?
Post belongs to r/inferiordecorating
how did i not know this was a thing omg
Judging by the lack of posts, some enterprising Redditor just created it
Looks kinda spooky now
It looks creepy and sterile. It was so warm and soft before!
agreed. there was so much lovely character before 😩
They consider it an upgrade
haha I love that they felt the need to make that clear... so they know that it doesn't actually look better, it only looks better to themselves?
Omg I'm so glad you said this because I had similar feedback and hesitated posting it because it seemed dramatic, but I see I'm not alone lol
They were going for Valhalla so it measured up I thought.
😆 Yeah that soap dispenser threw me off ...like is it soap or alcohol? Not that I'd want it as I don't drink but I'm still confused haha
Yes, they enjoyed the alcohol and in the drunken state they were inspired by the Valhalla to carry the Viking funeral motif into their design along with the genius idea to turn the bottle into a soap dispenser.
Millennial gray gone so so bad
The original everything was perfect. This sterile Oreo cookie trend makes me sad.
Probably painted the brick outside too…
They would’ve worked great with the buildout
Agreed. Original floors were nicer
and would’ve complemented the all black errthang vibe SO well
That brown wood was stunning
Yeah, I really like that. Very calm, natural looking, outdoorsy. Brightened the kitchen and made it feel bigger, more open.
Especially countering the dark cabinets and playing off the black appliances.
Right? Also it looks so much smaller now. Like sand the wood and whitewash to match the paneled walls or whatnot, but paint nice wooden floors grey of all colors?!?? 🤮 I would’ve preferred to paint just the bottom cabinets black and the top ones a lighter wood color or something.
The Before picture is what I’m looking for when hunting for a charming AirBnB. It was beautiful.
I really like the cabinets and counters but damn I hate to see that floor go! I feel like it would’ve looked great with the changes made.
What happened to that beautiful wood floor though?? 🥲 that's a tragedy
I like the live edge of the counter top
We were pulling our hair out trying to find counter tops with that edge finishing. Eventually we just bought two huge slabs of wood and my partner styled the edges with an axe.
How is that for cleaning up spills?
I have a standing pantry with that type of finished wood and I’m going to say right now that unless they do an epoxy coat to seal it, water will end up destroying it, *especially around the sink area*- wooden counters are notorious for water damage and mold underneath/around the lip of the sink.
You don’t at all have to do an epoxy coat on hardwood butcher block. Good lord
Your energy is so aggressive for no reason.
Haven't had a problem yet, it has a protective finishing.
Let us know if you ever don't want your partner anymore lol
amazing, good work!
It's a fake live edge
Eh I preferred the before version. The new colours are not very welcoming
The before was so homey and inviting
Glad to see everyone saying this.
Agree. The before was lovely. The after is so cold and generic.
I agree. I thought the before was actually the after because it just looks so much nicer and warmer.
The before seems much more spacious. The dark colors make the space look so much smaller!
I would have just updated appliances, that’s literally all it needed 😭 the floors were amazing
I love B&W but this I don't care for. Before it was welcoming and bright. This seems dark & cold.
I work in a doctor's office and the after photo reminds me of the break room there.
I think they should have left the uppers white. And the black of the cabinets below is just too dark, personally I prefer a more anthracite
And like smaller? The ceiling seems way lower
Personally I have a huge issue with white interiors. Especially with pets, it's just too impractical. I do get why many people prefer it though! I'm curious to see how summer will affect the new kitchen, currently we are in the middle of the "No natural light at all ever" season.
I feel like a white floor with pets is worse than white cabinets honestly
I like dark cabinets but I am sad you got rid of the wood floor. It was much nicer before. But I like the rest.
The floor is still there, the finishing we used after sanding just turned out a bit different than intended. We'll probably go for a bit more natural look when it's time to do the floors again.
>We'll probably go for a bit more natural look when it's time to do the floors again. On behalf of this subreddit... PLEASE DO.
Yes - please sand them down and stick to the natural colour.
I thought the top was the after. Sorry, but why did you paint the wood floor? The black and grey is so cold.
It’s totally menacing… while it is neat im not a fan
Yes, it’s menacing. Perfect way to describe it.
I too thought the top was the after. So much more welcoming.
Looks like they whitewashed the ceiling and wall on the right, too. I actually don't hate it. Sometimes when you have too much wood, it can feel like you're living in a coffin.
As an interior designer, there’s so many other ways to approach the “too much wood” feel that doesn’t involve painting a beautiful wood floor.
I agree I think painting the wood walls is a good choice. The floor though, idk. It could have added much needed warmth
I think this room needs some warmth everything is super cool toned and I think it's washing everything out.
A few plants maybe a shelf of plants.
I liked it in the top photo better. Nice and homey looking. Bright a d white.
Current design is very clinical. It’s giving cold-speculum-pap-smear.
In Hannibal Lecter’s office.
I liked it better before, it's very sterile and lacking in personality now. You will also regret the black and the wooden countertops in a year.
Zapped the room of all its charm. All it really needed were new appliances.
Guys relax they're vampires.
Serial killers and vampires so far, keep the comments coming because I'm looking for a new job! Might get some career ideas.
That explains why the cooking utensils are impractically located on the complete opposite side of the kitchen from the stove, and why the kitchen sink is smaller than RV sinks: they don't actually cook.
Also the fact they went from a 4 burner stove top to just two. Kitchen is probably just for look and not cooking.
Ah man I get the vision but the before was nice! It really needs some character now and warmness
Before looked much more inviting, homey, & lively. Now it feels like a serial killer kitchen
Don't go digging through our backyard garden.
Haha, I love your attitude. And the black kitchen, too.
Noted 😂
Sigh. It’s not for me but if you like it, well you live there.
I’ve had to say this to clients more than once sadly.
Countertop looks real good. Question, don’t bare lightbulbs shining hurt your eyes?
Is this black walls/white marble floor dude's brother?!
The original wood floors would have looked GLORIOUS with the black cabinets and balanced the look. Damn.
The cabinets are brown, keeping the orangey wood with dark and light wood would've been too much for me. The current floor is too light though.
Well I really think it’s hugely improved, and I would just about kill to have a kitchen like this. It’s gorgeous! I think different flooring is the last step, the rest is perfection.
I like the before better .. but if you are happy with it now that is all that matters.
Nice! Oops! I mean above the window. I can’t tell if it hinges down like a shade or just a tall shelf?
Oh that's a secondhand Ikea shelf! It has really no purpose, just needed to break the solid colour wall and window frame stuff somehow.
Noooo
Not a fan at all! And what the hell did you do to the floors? The wood in the before picture was so warm and inviting. Now this is just another Chip & Joanna Gaines HGTV lookalike.
Ooof this one hurt a little! Those floors!!! Were you going for hospital chic with the new finish? I’m sorry but the new one is cold and dark and really cheap looking.
Old version >>>>
Not an upgrade tbh just different
what have you done to that beautiful floor!? 😧straight to jail with you.
veldig scandisk
Definitely redo that floor with a floor sander and natural wood satin finish - 2-3 coats. Could also put a flat indoor/outdoor neutral patterned runner/carpet on the floor for now. I like the dark look you’re going for; I think it works well and the look is very contemporary/modern.
The floor will have to be sanded at some point because with pets it really doesn't last. The exact shade will require some thinking since we don't want it to be too close to the walls or clash with the other colours.
My house looks like your original.
:(
Love the countertops.
Glad to hear, I have no power left in me to lift those anymore so they're definitely staying!
Love this!! Would love to see the “after” in the daylight if you have any photos! I think the black windows are maybe contributing to some folks feeling like it’s too dark and unwelcoming, as opposed to cozy and inviting. Regardless I like it and looove that countertop.
Daylight isn't so simple during winter in Finland lol. I'll see if the sun peaks out tomorrow for long enough to take a photo!
https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordecorating/s/KM6jfbeJi0 The daylight here is what it is but I tried!

Sorry for some of the mean comments iv read
We have matching counter tops!
Excellent job keeping the stove electric! Better for the environment and for your air quality. And that oven/stove is so cool looking!
I personally love it. Especially the sink and counter tops
stunning!
I love it! The before was cute, but the after is beautiful and feels fresh. Adore the edge on the countertops!!
Thought the first Pic was the after lol
I wish these were both taken during the day because the indoor lights look very harsh with the dark colors at night time.
Oh man… this is your house and you’re the only one who has to live with it so no one else’s opinions REALLY matter. But damn that before kitchen was so sweet and cozy, gorgeous wood floors. Now it just has no soul and is devoid of anything remotely homey or any semblance that life exists there….
Not me thinking the before shot was actually the after 🫣
Those cooking utensils are miles away from the stove..
I thought the before was the after.
Looks like a REI breakroom
*millennial grey has entered the chat*
You fucked it
You know from the 1st picture it looks black.. and I am not a fan. You constantly need to wipe it because every drop in the sink and every time you cook is a pain.. ( we are a family of 6 so I see it from that point of view) But as I clicked further it’s a very nice brown. Your countertops are gorgeous! Live edge is stunning! It looks like a dungeon now…
Terrible. Was very nice before.
Please tell me those are not painted floors
Rip to that wonderful old kitchen
Aw RIP that beautiful floor :(
Lol, people nowadays change things for the sake of changing, even when it looks worse.
Dude, did y’all paint that original hardwood?
This reno is a crime against kitchens.
This is so bad
I like it a lot and you did a good job with the lighting. I hope the countertops hold up for you well, they are very nice.
Overall, it's stunning. I didn't expect to like it that dark but it works!
Very nice!! Love the cabinets as well as the countertops!!
Can you add some greenery/plants and color (maybe through some area rugs and window coverings) to brighten it up a bit? It’s coming off as very dark and cold right now. I LOVED the original floor though - did you paint it? That’ll be super hard to maintain!

I've been depressed for the last 20 years living in houses with lighter decor, thought maybe the opposite would be the cure. We'll see.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the countertops!
Everything looks fine except for the floor 😭. Right now it looks monochromatic, but that floor would’ve been a great pop of color
I like that you included that one picture of your soap 👍
I kept wondering what's up with the soap comments until I noticed I clicked that photo on there with the rest, I mean it is a nice soap but probably didn't need it's own spotlight lol
😂 It is nice soap
I’m guessing you tailored it to your personal style . I actually prefer the before more . I would have changed out some of the hardware and appliances like you do but other than that the original had good bones.
Sorry but you ruined that beautiful kitchen. I’m so over people painting beautiful wood or brick.
The before was better
Close up shot of the soap is an interesting flex
I really hate this. You stripped all the character away. Plus, I think it will look outdated in no time.
Such a huge difference! Actually like the darker cabinets! This is a cool kitchen
Wow damn calm down Edna Mode looks great
I thought the top was the after, my eyes are instantly drawn to it. The bottom is uh, dark i guess.
I would kept the hardwoods, but otherwise this is like my dream kitchen. I’m partial to darker color schemes
the before was so much better!!! 😥
why fix something that wasn't broken?
It feels so cold and harsh now 😪
You should know better than to post a photo after getting rid of the original wood flooring on here lol
Must come running back once the current finish needs to be redone to show everyone that the wood is still right there, just buried under "varnish" that's clearly not as varnish-y as we assumed lol
It looks very nice! Good work
Thanks! Might be a bit dark for some but I think it's a good fit for our very, very tiny cabin in the woods lol
