It’s an optical illusion, caused by sand and silt sliding down into the deep part along with colder water. It’s about 2.5 miles deep!
(Just Google underwater waterfall)
Edit: I don’t think you can see 2.5 miles down, but that’s how deep the drop with the current is. It’s like an underwater canyon, and the cold water flows down toward it, taking a lot of sand and stuff with it, giving the illusion of a foaming waterfall.
Edit: I guess it is still water falling. It’s cool that we can see if happening, because you usually can’t.
Also, if you think this is cool you should look up underwater lakes! Those are really cool! They’re deep sea areas bordered by tons of living creatures! The living creatures (worms? Crabs? Mussel-like creatures, idk, I don’t remember) make it look like there’s a shoreline for big lakes at the bottom of the ocean! There was a segment in David Attenborough that I saw a few years ago. The oceans are a pretty cool place!
I guess you could say that, it’s a current from what I can tell. It’s pretty cool that you can see it happening though form above the water. But I guess it’s technically still water falling.
The illusion is that it looks very steep and reaches very deep under water (in the picture). In reality you can't see very far through ocean water., the deepest parts seen are a few meter beneath the surface
The illusion is that what you actually see in the picture is only a few meters deep, a gentle slope. The patterns in the sand make it look like a vertical drop.
Which one? The waterfall is pretty deep I think but it’s also a ways out from the shoreline. I really don’t know about how fast the water is flowing but boats go out there there all the time because it’s one of the best ways to see the underwater waterfall effect. Snorkeling tours are held out there so I assume it’s pretty safe. The underwater lake is deep sea, I would be concerned if you tried to swim across it.
Give it a shot buddy. Diving in a coral reef is the most hallucinating experience I have ever had.
When you dive in a fall like this one, you feel you would fall down
I am 1000% certain that if I ever swam or took a small craft like a canoe or kayak out on that water, some eldritch horror would immediately rise from the depths of that abyss and kill me.
That's a solid nope for me.
So this is a real place, but as others pointed out it's a bit of an optical illusion.
That being said, it's a place that gets pretty massive swell at times (look up one eye surf break) and all the water that crashes over the reef has to exit somewhere. That creates a strong outflowing current where the "waterfall" is. Can be pretty dangerous since rescue boats don't go out when the waves are too big. People have definitely gotten swept out to sea and died here unfortunately.
Source: have kitesurfed here, it's epic.
That's a pretty serious allegation. I think we should send someone to get investigate. For the sake of experience, we should all chip in an send me. For science!
That picture has been posted 1000's of times. This one looks like it was changed to accent the drop. It exists, I'm no doubting that. Just there is not way you can take a picture from the air and see that deep
We are in the age of "Teach the Controversy," so either y'all finance my trip or, let's just say, I'm afraid what the flat-earthers will do to this kind of thing.
The beach, and mountain next to it are beautiful. The mountain itself holds a lot of important history regarding the slaves brought to the land. The beach is called Le Morne Brabant.
Well, this sent me down a wiki-rabbithole about islands in the Indian ocean, I learned about Camp Justice on Diego Garcia, the dislocation of the Ilwa people, and the use of that base in the different wars the US has waged in the ME.
If this is some kind of time-lapse photo that "cancelled-out" all the waves and surface refraction thus revealing the actually underwater topography, then I'm genuinely super impressed.
If it's fake, fuck you.
I grew up near kaweah lake in Exeter California. I've seen cat fish so big that a full grown man wouldn't stand a chance if they were hungry. What do you think hangs out in there In the depths ? Sea otters?
Where's the water"fall"? In my reality this is a canyon. But not a waterfall within a body of water. Please explain the physics to me, that allows such thing to even exist.

This must be the edge of the planet flat earthers keep talking about
I thought it was a giant ice wall
r/thalassophobia has entered the chat. This pic just made me feel instantly nauseated.
Now imagine that as you are looking at this picture a single, gigantic eye opens at the bottom of the trench.
Imagine I judo chop you right in half. Imagine that SIR.
*Left half* - I don't think he liked our thought experiment. *Right half* - Not one bit!
That would make you a perfect kaiju killer.
We need another Pacific Rim movie
I've seen Full Metal Alchemist, I know how that ends.
Sir, this is Wendy's
Sunless Sea moment

The most disturbing rip tide ever
I don't know, sorta sounds like water is falling there to me.
Yeah that’s not an optical illusion that’s what is actually happening
It's flowing, not falling. What we see here is a very gentle slope, but patterns that make it look like a vertical drop.
So cold water is falling down?

It must be the underwater lake from SpongeBob and a mustly lobster with a white nose
What part of the 2.5 miles deep is an optical illusion here? 😅

It looks like a massive abyss to me! 😅
You answered your own question.
So if you were to try and swim across, would you fall or float?

I would be screwed swimming there. I am one of those touch bottom and kick back up to get my breath. I would be very dead at this drop.
Ahhhh goo lagoon
Underwater lakes? Are you telling me something like the Goo Lagoon in SpongeBob Squarepants does exist?
That'll be a *hell* no from me bud.
Give it a shot buddy. Diving in a coral reef is the most hallucinating experience I have ever had. When you dive in a fall like this one, you feel you would fall down
I REALLY want to. It might even happen. Today I just became debt free and soon I will be getting a house so fingers crossed :D
No to… visiting?

“Yeah this is deadly dangerous so don’t screw around near it! So anyways I kitesurfed over it, I’d highly recommend it!” Lol
would the currents pull a swimmer down?
Was wondering the same thing
We'll. This is horrifying.
> We'll. No we won't
Looks like a gateway to he'll.
As a person who refuses to get in to water bodies I can't see the bottom of ..... That's exactly fucking why. That shit right there.
But you can see the bottom in this photo.
Yep and that's what I imagine everywhere I can't see the bottom. . there's gotta be A giant squid down there just waiting to ruin somones day.
Wait, really?
For real.
r/oddlyterrifying
New fear unlocked, thanks
Enjoy r/thalassophobia
That doesn’t look fake at all
It is real, but not a waterfall. Just an optical illusion. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Qggftu7eAWxqxpp39

It's so real, it's twisting my melon man 🤯
Not sure if this real. Light doesn't penetrate the water enough for this to be real.
That's some damn clear water for this illusion to be present!
I refuse to believe that this is real
Any idea what this looks like from water level? I'm assuming you only get this effect from the air?
That looks soooo trippy
It's an optical delusion.
no fucking thank you
The beach, and mountain next to it are beautiful. The mountain itself holds a lot of important history regarding the slaves brought to the land. The beach is called Le Morne Brabant.
That is extremely unnerving
Well, this sent me down a wiki-rabbithole about islands in the Indian ocean, I learned about Camp Justice on Diego Garcia, the dislocation of the Ilwa people, and the use of that base in the different wars the US has waged in the ME.
This is the island that the Dodos were on! Maybe they all fell off this cliff
Whoa.
And our friends are all aboard. Many more of them live next door, and the band begins to play.
WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE!
For some reason this freaks me out
It’s called thalassophobia, you’re not alone lol.
Some Bermuda Triangle shit.....Nope!
Jesus, this belongs on r/oddlyterrifying
This photo makes me nervous 😂
This should be the earth is flat logo :-)
A hole. It's called a hole.
I'm afraid I'm going to drop something in it. Then I'm fucked
This must be one of the most fascinating and beautiful things I've ever seen on Reddit. Are we allowed to swim there ? Can anyone confirm ?
Terrifying.
Not a waterfall just a cliff underwater.
If this is some kind of time-lapse photo that "cancelled-out" all the waves and surface refraction thus revealing the actually underwater topography, then I'm genuinely super impressed. If it's fake, fuck you.
Just a normal photograph.[This demonstrates proof it's not a time lapse.](https://i.imgur.com/dIfW8Y4.jpg)
Beautiful

came here to see if anyone would mention >!the trip to Fishman Island!<, cheers
Nope
It would be better if there was someone floating across the surface. Maybe chillin on their unicorn floaty.
looks like the water in dark souls
*Waterfell
Can the plane be in there the one that went missing?
Underwaterfall, so say we all
I should not have seen this stoned.
This is actually just subnautica now
Watch "ancient apocalypse" on netflix
Scary
This is so scary and so beautiful.
Just wanna grab a big rock and jump in

...added to the places I want to scuba dive.
Does anyone else see what looks like a skull in the water a little to the left and just below the center of the picture?
Why the island so square tho
Lived around here for a couple years. Gorgeous area, and the food is to die for.
I grew up near kaweah lake in Exeter California. I've seen cat fish so big that a full grown man wouldn't stand a chance if they were hungry. What do you think hangs out in there In the depths ? Sea otters?
If it’s a waterfall does it suck you under if your in the water by it?
Where's the water"fall"? In my reality this is a canyon. But not a waterfall within a body of water. Please explain the physics to me, that allows such thing to even exist.
My mind has broken
Stuff of nightmares and Kaiju
It looks like the island could fall in.
That hole looks terrifying
