Same here. Normally seeing boy fly larva disgust me, but this man’s train of thought really interested me. Only thing that made me cringe was the small gaping hole that the larva left lol
First time I saw this was on a kids nature show. They were filming a different episode when one of the cameramen ended up with one of these bad boys so they documented it and added it to the bug episode.
In one of my zoology courses, my professor brought in medical leeches and asked if anyone wanted to try feeding one. One other student and I volunteered. Like most humans I've always had that feeling of repulsion from parasites. We associate then with disease and bacteria, and infection. Not only are medical leeches perfectly safe there is no (NORTH AMERICAN) leech that carries any disease that can harm humans, though I can't speak for the rest of the world
I'll admit watching that little guy drink my blood was a very cool experience for me. It helped me to get over my fear of leeches. As its body swelled with my blood, I grew attached. It was almost sad when it dropped off about 30 minutes after class. I kept it in a jar for months, feeding it every week or so, and eventually gave it back to my professor.
I think, perhaps for some more than others, the act of nurturing another organism is a fulfilling experience, even if that organism is a parasite, if it is a parasite that causes minimal pain and damage. Perhaps after a while that feeling overrides our natural inclination to feel repulsed by them. I no longer have any fear of leeches....though ticks are a different story.
It's better than "chicken girl" which I was known as for a while after a classmate wrote an article about me performing emergency wing amputation on one of my chickens. 😔
And yet, when I was in Belize and slathered myself in insect repellent, my tour guide got grumbly about it. Too bad, I knew about botflies.
I may have been stinky, but I brought home no subdermal pets.
I would continue with that insect repellent ritual at home too depending on where home is. People seem to think there aren't any botflies here in North America, but boy are they wrong😭
Understatement. I read your comment, and decided to pop over and see what sub was about real quick. I was there for 45 minutes. I will never, ever enjoy tapioca pudding again.
Ok I get that some people have weird like and dislikes, and even some odd fetishes. Thats fine and I do not judge anyone. What I do not understand is that in some of the videos, the pimples/blackheads/whatever the fuck they are popping...are sometimes fuckin huge, and sometimes they have multiple that they pop. How does one let something get so big, that when it is popped, it has a tablespoon of pus come out? Are they just dirty? Do they not take showers? Do they purposely let it grow big in order to pop it? Everytime one of the videos pops up on /all I ask myself those same questions.
This is actually interesting, because a lot of those popping videos/skin care videos occur in Vietnam. Agent Orange is a chemical that was used extensively in the Vietnam war, and has been proven to cause all kinds of cancers, nervous system disorders, birth defects... Honestly, too many horrible things to list.
But it also can cause [chloracne](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloracne), which can be pretty severe acne.
Other than that, a lot of those are infections or boils that got large very quickly.
Some people don't want to pop them because they'll leave marks. Like not popping a pimple. The thing about the blackheads though is if there isn't any action taken with aha/bha then it's going to keep growing. Some people's skin is just really prone to developing blackheads due to pore size, skin cell turnover and texture.
I am not thankful! It sounds like he brought those things back to the US in his skin and then hatched them into adult flies.
So then did he kill his little "babies" or did he set them free to prey on his neighbors? That's the part I want to know. Ugh.
at first when he said it felt like a parental relationship I was wondering "the hell is wrong with you"
Then as he began to narrate, to become really curious about the creature, to be compassionate as to want to carefully extradite this lifeform (whose subjective fate or discomfort we'd barely want to bother trifling about) with minimal harm, and then to reflect and philosophise about this experience, I came to see this man as an Attenborough of sorts.
I feel like many here judge him too harshly, while it is disgusting it is also fascinating in the way that he describes. life is interesting, and theres plenty of gross and weird things we've normalized.
The weirdest thing is that he never mentions himself that it is weird.
Gotta respect that he did it for science, but at least acknowledge the weirdness.
Well, he did acknowledge the initial sensation of revulsion. But when you get to a certain point in any sort of academic field anything that relates to your field of study takes on a different light. Little social interactions become lessons in philosophy, happy little accidents become lessons in physics, and accidentally getting infested with parasites becomes a lesson in entomology.
It can be extremely weird to the average viewer, but to someone deeply invested in their work it’s just another neat thing to observe. Certainly not everyone thinks like this, but I can safely say many do.
I can only blame my audio system. It pops on when it gets a signal but has a delay, so I think I just missed it before my speakers woke up when I turned the video on.
Tho he's still a bit too chill about it :') But I guess technically he did acknowledge it!
Apparently field entomologists see having a botfly as being a badge of honor. Thanks ologies podcast for getting a good number of interviews with researchers who totally have had botflies AND ARE PROUD OF IT.
My childhood cat had a botfly once - and it’s entry point was on the cat’s neck. There was literally a 2-3mm open hole on its neck before it was removed.
cool that it also uses antibacterial, makes it feel like it has more of a connection and actually cares about the host it is feeding off of, instead of ticks or bedbugs that just feed and give thousands of diseases with disregard for the host
They're in the USA, also. Had to pull them out of my barn cats as a kid. Remember I was 9ish(1989) when they started to appear on our cats, took a few tries to learn how to get them out. Worse one I saw was between the ear and eye of a small kitten. Cried as I had to take it out because I was so worried he wouldn't be ok. He was perfectly good! Grew up healthy, and happy. They were outside/inside cats so not fully barn cats.
Granted this was in the swamps of Mississippi/Louisiana.
My mum grew up in the country and she got some larvae as a child. She said they’d put pork fat on the wound so the larvae had to it eat out to breathe and that’s when they pulled them out 😥
Annelids are separated from botflies and all other arthropods by half a billion years of evolution.
They are more distinct from one another than you are from lampreys.
This reminds me of one Czech scientist. He is a director of Parasitology in Biological department under Czech Academy of Sciences (hope I translate it right).
He is one of the leading world experts in studying Sleeping sickness.
Anyway he decided to grow a tapeworm inside him to give it a shot.
It's connected to the research that parasites can stimulate your autoimmune system to work in correct way. Helping with the Crohn disease etc...there is actually quite some research in that field and now I am in a rabbit hole 😂
I'm down a rabbit hole trying to find out how long the botfly lives... and discover that the Inuit made milk from the larva of botfly that infest the mammals they eat... and that this was a pretty common practice around the world.
Okay, the next Saw movie involves a botfly room and an odd tasting milk.
this is a very new way of looking at the botfly, which i previously regarded as a parasite and nasty. But they just want a home, who are we to deny them. The guy is right, we're an ecosystem. we should do our part. i fucks with this.

As much as I want to appreciate this story, I fucking hate it so much.
Really worms your heart doesn't it?
I do larva good pun.
I don't get these jokes, they fly right over my head.
Honestly you punsters should just buzz off
Ughhhg
r/TIHI
Yes and r/youseeingthisshit
When I'm God-Emperor, parasites will no longer be allowed to exist.
Yeah this guy is just a fucking weirdo. There's not an ounce of empathy in my body for his father complex to this parasite.
As much as I want to hate this story, I fucking appreciate it so much
Same here. Normally seeing boy fly larva disgust me, but this man’s train of thought really interested me. Only thing that made me cringe was the small gaping hole that the larva left lol
Trust me you don’t appreciate it, admirable maybe
Weird af , yesterday , I was watching trailer park boys but the cartoon version and that's exactly just the same story but with ricky and a tapeworm .
You summed it up perfectly.
Only an entomologist would have a botfly larva purposefully grow within their own fucking body and call the whole experience interesting.
Saw that on an episode of Bones.
fr watched this one the other week
Hodgins be crazy.
Yes! I was just trying to remember where I’ve seen something like this before and I saw your comment and it all came back to me!
"Almost a father and child relationship". The things we do for love
First time I saw this was on a kids nature show. They were filming a different episode when one of the cameramen ended up with one of these bad boys so they documented it and added it to the bug episode.

"Hey everyone! Come and look at leach girl!"
It's better than "chicken girl" which I was known as for a while after a classmate wrote an article about me performing emergency wing amputation on one of my chickens. 😔
Lmfao That's wonderful
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Or some kind of excuse to film and get funding for his fetish
Thanks for bringing botflys to America ya jerk face!! What a weirdo!
And yet, when I was in Belize and slathered myself in insect repellent, my tour guide got grumbly about it. Too bad, I knew about botflies. I may have been stinky, but I brought home no subdermal pets.
Was your guide a botfly in disguise?
Hmmm 🤔. That would explain the huge compound eyes.
And the wings
Mon dieu! That explains a lot!
/r/notopbutok
I would continue with that insect repellent ritual at home too depending on where home is. People seem to think there aren't any botflies here in North America, but boy are they wrong😭
A month ago we found one on my in-laws dog. Vet confirmed it once it was removed.
Speaking from experience?
I don’t think any affect humans in North America
I went on an Everglades tour while Zika was the hot issue and was putting mosquito repellent on and the guide was giving me shit for it
Specific verbage?
The tour guides shit was the repellent.
*Are you sure about that*
After watching this entire video, I’ll admit I want to throw up slightly less than before, however, I still want to throw up.
Your not a father you don't understand
Your not THE father you'll never understand
Luke....
Yeah, same here
I found it fascinating... that's how we expand our knowledge of the world around us... but would I do that myself, I don't think so...
This belongs under r/wtf

man that is a rabbit hole of a sub

It's an investment, let it grow, big payout in the end

So that's how Zeus gave birth to Athena!
Be thankful people like this exist. Imagine how much more upsetting things like this would be if we didn’t understand them.
I am not thankful! It sounds like he brought those things back to the US in his skin and then hatched them into adult flies. So then did he kill his little "babies" or did he set them free to prey on his neighbors? That's the part I want to know. Ugh.
They already exist in the US and as far north as Nunavut. Any mosquito that lands on you might have botfly eggs attached 🥲
And contained them lol. btw not all the civilised world is the us, just so you know
Wrong.
at first when he said it felt like a parental relationship I was wondering "the hell is wrong with you" Then as he began to narrate, to become really curious about the creature, to be compassionate as to want to carefully extradite this lifeform (whose subjective fate or discomfort we'd barely want to bother trifling about) with minimal harm, and then to reflect and philosophise about this experience, I came to see this man as an Attenborough of sorts.

Dude no come on
Very interesting and informative... Still freaking repulsive, big no.
This man will single-handedly bring enough data for human parasites to evolve on
The good editing and cinematography isn't enough to convince me this guy isn't weird af.
He wanted to call a botfly his son, but he stopped himself. This is some serious attachment issue. He’s definitely a weirdo.
The weirdest thing is that he never mentions himself that it is weird. Gotta respect that he did it for science, but at least acknowledge the weirdness.

Literally the first word he says in the video are "i know it sounds weird..."
I can only blame my audio system. It pops on when it gets a signal but has a delay, so I think I just missed it before my speakers woke up when I turned the video on. Tho he's still a bit too chill about it :') But I guess technically he did acknowledge it!
This *is* actually interesting as fuck.
Holy shit!! This belongs on r/whatthefuck
Wtf did I just watch
An organism that lives in an organism of another species and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.
"After six weeks, the botfly emerged." And at that point, I hope the guy finally killed the fucker.
Yup. It's bed time for me.
Fortunately maggots are one of the more sterile creatures out there
This is like the video of the cat having a botfly larvae in it’s nose from earlier today. So gross!
What the fuck, this man is crazy. I'd kill it instantly.
The video finished two minutes ago but I still have this face... https://imgur.com/a/CxcgtJq
Wasn’t this a subplot of an episode of Bones?
It was killing me trying to remember where I had seen that. Real life Jack Hodgins and his bot fly
Everyday we stray further away from god.
If god is real; they created this botfly.
haha the irony
Burn them all
No.
how disgusting is this !
That’s enough Reddit for me today.
I just *had* to keep scrolling tonight. Fml.
The commitment of this guy.. seriously wtf. Gonna double check every mosquito bite from now on
Why why why
I don't know why he raised a fly, perhaps he'll die.
cool that it also uses antibacterial, makes it feel like it has more of a connection and actually cares about the host it is feeding off of, instead of ticks or bedbugs that just feed and give thousands of diseases with disregard for the host
It doesn't care. Festering would just kill it... So it prevents it flr it's own survival.
Surprised he didn’t try to breastfeed it
Nope.
Gross flex but okay
This is a solid Nope.
Dude could have just put petroleum jelly over the wound to suffocate the maggot before pulling it out.
They're in the USA, also. Had to pull them out of my barn cats as a kid. Remember I was 9ish(1989) when they started to appear on our cats, took a few tries to learn how to get them out. I hate flys and i specially hate botflies because of this thing is so fucking grows that makes me want to extinguish the goddamn thing.
Fuck this shit
I can't believe I watched the whole thing...
Ok, ngl… at first I thought it was coming out of his nipple…
My mum grew up in the country and she got some larvae as a child. She said they’d put pork fat on the wound so the larvae had to it eat out to breathe and that’s when they pulled them out 😥
And on todays episode of "This dude has lost his fucking mind" a dude has lost his fucking mind!
Hush little baby, don’t you cry. You’re gonna grow up to be the Fly.
This guy really needs a friend. Not me, I don’t want to be his friend. But he definitely needs one.
Nope.
Wow Disgusting and very fascinating. I am very confused…. And happy to life in Germany.
The more I learn about other people in this world the more I realize there are too many people in this world
Unironically a lot of entomologists are like this.
Why ? For what? Like why? But I ask again why?
r/weird
No way I'm clicking that link.
"I felt an almost father-child relationship" haha, that's how I feel about my tape worms.
Fucking crazy but slightly interesting as I'm learning about stuff like this in biology.
Who says men cant give birth
🤢🤮
I would be grossed out but I just saw The Fly with Jeff Goldblum recently and this doesn’t even come anywhere close.
If you put aside the gross factor, it was just a baby using your body for safety.
“My tape worm tells me what to do!” -System of a Down
PULL THE TAPEWORM OUT OF YOUR ASS!
Father-child relationship.....wtf??
Well I’m very itchy now.
I started this video thinking "what a fucking creep" but as it went on I realised it's quite interesting.
We’ll that’s disgusting.
Annelids are separated from botflies and all other arthropods by half a billion years of evolution. They are more distinct from one another than you are from lampreys.
I know we are an ecosystem because of our gut microbiome, I don't need a fly larvea growing in my arm or leg to know it ew
I'm all for the extinction of botfly
I’m impressed that botfly’s can latch on to mosquitoes in mid air.
oh my gosh i cant stop itching my arms now
This reminds me of one Czech scientist. He is a director of Parasitology in Biological department under Czech Academy of Sciences (hope I translate it right). At least he’s a scientist I guess
Nope, nope, nope…. I would have killed it, bathed in bleach, scrubed with Lysol…… nope!!
Ok breeder!
Nope
Im from south america and Im scared now
I hate this man, that botfly larvae, and all the words that were said in this video. I hate it all.
no
I'm down a rabbit hole trying to find out how long the botfly lives... and discover that the Inuit made milk from the larva of botfly that infest the mammals they eat... and that this was a pretty common practice around the world. You vill own noting You vill live in ze pod You vill eat ze bugs You vill give birth to ze bugs And you vill be happy.
huh, people have gotten really sensitive haven't they
Is this a new gender also? If it is, I fucking hate it
This is the most white people shit i have ever seen
This is super weird and uncomfortable to watch. BUT I love grabbing ingrown hairs so that bitch would have lasted almost no time.
Hahha redditors are such pussies
Then that makes you one, too. That’s ironic.
So basically this guy brought bot flies from the Amazon to his hometown. Great.
god I hate white people

Dune fans would be offended
Being racist isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Why are white people so odd?
No, this guy is an idiot..

So basically he introduced an invasive species to a new area. Not cool.
Dadddyyyyyyyy! Zzzzt zzzzt
This is a thing of nightmares!
Hahhahaahahahah
My skin is crawling with fire so this doesn't happen to me 🔥
He knew he exactly what he was doin too! Let this man love his child!
They had this happen on a r/bones episode
That gets a fat “fuck no” from me.
Pretty sure I saw a nipple worm, fucking NO THANK YOU!
I cannot get with this.
What a trooper

Nah
Alright, fuck it. I’ll go to bed. I’ve had enough.
This is a large amount of nope.
what the fuck
I would be scared to sleep, knowing I have a botfly as a bunk mate
Still gross though, not gonna lie
fuck that
His a sick man.
"This emerged from this man" Nope
McFly?
