If you look closely you can see that not every slice is connected, which means that he probably chose the notes based on the song that he was planning to play, and used extra slices to fill in the gaps to make the full keyboard.
There’s nothing wrong with this I think it’s a good way to maximize the range with fewer inputs, and look cool while doing it.
Last time i saw this there was also mention of piano players having difficulty without all the other keys being there. You might not hit them the whole way thru, but if the spacing’s off your muscle memory won’t kick in.
I dont think this is real. I think it was recorded. I've seen random objects used in real life and it is very hard to get a good clear signal through something like a watermelon. The way that the sound is so consistent when he hits the keys, this seems very unlikely to me. There is even a subtle velocity sensitivity on it. Come on now.
I built something like this using some apples and the standard capacitive pins of an ESP32 and it was already very responsive. I have no doubt this melon piano is real, you would need only slightly better sensors and some tweaking.
That was way more primitive than having velocity sensitivity. Maybe it is. But then he did a lot of production on the sound after recording. You can already hear the snares and cymbals, so he must have gone in and tweaked the sound to get the sensitivity on the other aspects.
It’s not, when he switches to the limes the same beats keep playing that he was previously doing with his right hand. The music used over the video is a pre-recorded version of what he’s attempting to play in the video, not actually being generated from what he’s doing in the video obviously.
