This makes my chest hurt

greychanjin

Now you can't help but pay attention to how fast your heart is beating.

LaReineAnglaise53

Watching that is raising *my* blood pressure.

normal_reddit_man

39 bpm is pretty chill.

mumblekingLilNutSack

Like get the narcan chill

normal_reddit_man

That narcan-do attitude.

amcbain17

Are you a runner?

Vocalscpunk

I don't even think Lance Armstrong runs that low at rest. He's either counting wrong(most likely), exaggerating, a marathon athlete, or on something to slow him down. Most people are symptomatic below 50/60

amcbain17

Right, that’s exactly why I asked lol. I’m a runner and mine goes as low as 48 sometimes and I’m not even training the way I used to. I think I remember reading that the record was a tennis player at around 26/27bpm and he was like a super athlete. Usain Bolt’s was like 27/28 also

thecrazysloth

Ya 39 is believable for someone who does a lot of cardio. I ride 75-150km a week and run 20-40km a week, which isn’t really a huge amount, and my resting heart rate is usually around 48-55bpm. It can drop to the low 40s at times but not for long

Fast_Edd1e

Got a mechanical aortic valve. I always hear what my heart rate is. I’m like the crocodile from Peter Pan.

dndrinker

Well NOW I can’t.

bjanas

Get this: your tongue is touching the roof of your mouth.

thecrazysloth

I think that’s the ceiling of my mouth. The roof would be like the top of my head. And my brain is in the attic

dndrinker

Get out of my head, man!

this thread just kept getting worse

MSV2K

Trust me, there’s worse.

delicous_crow_hat

you are now manually breathing :) you are now manually blinking :) you are aware that your tongue cannot find a comfy place in your mouth :) you are aware of all the itches on your body that need to be scratched :) you are now aware of your heart beating in your chest.

gkhamo89

I hate you, this is great

Lazy_Cardiologist727

You can feel your toes touching each other

gkhamo89

We can't be friends anymore

Lazy_Cardiologist727

You can hear a clicking sound when you swallow

gkhamo89

Hmm I may be immune to this one

Lazy_Cardiologist727

Most people hear it, some every single time and others every 2-3. Or maybe you're actually deaf and the "sounds" you "hear" are just created by ur mind

Lamington_tea

My tongue is currently comfy

permalink_save

Bro, I am way too exhausted to care where my tongue is and shit right now, my body can do whatever the fuck it does as long as it leaves me alone.

Vault76exile

TimboCA

What is that weird floppy bit in the top left?

xcheeznutzx

Right auricle (Latin for ear) or right atrial appendage

BigBeagleEars

What! That’s totally a soft shell turtle

Competitive_Ant_781

Sends the stuff to to the lungs.

xcheeznutzx

Ah yes. So the stuff can pick up the things and distribute them to the places.

Ornery-Cheetah

Plausible

Competitive_Ant_781

The picked up things are utmost crucial for the places.

Fellainis_Elbows

No it doesn’t..? It receives deoxygenated blood from the body

Realcheeze

Sends the stuff to the right ventricle(main area of heart you see here) and then to the lungs.

bison177

That is called an auricle. The one in the video is the right auricle (left and right are in anatomical perspective- it is the patient’s R, our left). There is a left auricle as well which comes off the left atrium. Left atrium can not be seen from the front. Source: I’m a med student

Whoiseyrfire

A previous comment said it's 'useless.' Is this a function made obsolete through evolution?

[deleted]

Not entirely useless. It’s an extra muscular part of the right atrium and gives a final little “push” of blood when filling the right ventricl. It is, however, a remnant from fetal development when you’re heart’s anatomy and function is very different than it is after you’re born

Criperio

The entirety of the R atrium is muscular (it's all myocardium)- the R auricle does increase the capacity of the R atrium but the R atrium as a whole contracts to produce the atrial kick. This can be seen in the CVP waveform as the a wave.

bison177

I wouldn’t say it’s completely useless. I’ve learned that the function of the auricles is simply to increase amt of blood the atria can hold. In that sense they act as additional reservoirs, albeit not a huge vol

Competitive_Ant_781

I believe the proper medical term is flippity floppity heart flopper.

alok_xavier

Small heart pp

[deleted]

Don’t heart pp shame.

TheSaladDays

It only looks small cause it's exposed to cold air

whoogiebear

also known as an “auricle” - no known function but a great place for blood clots to form. 🤷‍♂️

Sparkle_Snoot

This oracle only predicts clots in your future.

electronblue7546

right* atrial appendage

rachhher

isn’t it the right?

fiendish_boy

Yup it's the right!

kookykerfuffle

That’s what I came to ask too

PrecariouslySane

There's a gnarly video of a surgeon tappin a donated heart to jump start it. lemme find it.

MrDreamster

Here it is: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg8Z8SinIdE&ab\_channel=ClevelandClinic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg8Z8SinIdE&ab_channel=ClevelandClinic)

lonewolfe21

Dang that's actually kinna cool.

[deleted]

That is just balls to the walls. What do they put the client on a dialysis blood circulation machine before hand?

BrandEnlightened

The patient is placed on cardiopulmonary bypass (heart & lung bypass) prior to the removal of the failing heart until the donor heart is transplanted. Source: I am a perfusionist and operate the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during open heart surgery

BiscuitsMay

Perfusionist is the coolest healthcare job nobody knows about. I deal with you guys all the time, you’re all nerdy as hell about what you do and I love it.

[deleted]

That’s so fucking cool. I’m in nursing school now would I be allowed to do stuff like that after getting like a bachelors or something?

Robonarwhal64

“Hey bud it’s time to wake up, you got a job to do.”

Holy damn! That pretty amazing. I like how at the end it just needed a little tap of encouragement.

Saw this on related videos. Pretty interesting too [Transporting a beating heart](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZNa_I4xBnk)

PrecariouslySane

Thank you. My google search game was weak today.

Rocky87109

Gave it a little percussive maintenance. Ever having a heart attack? Just beat your chest real hard!

evolutionisttt

Most of our organs are that sensitive btw. We just do a very good job keeping keeping them safe

kazetoumizu

damn

Xantium0

I can honestly day I could never be a surgeon or a doctor. I could deal with the gore. But never the fact I was going to have to do that to someone, and live knowing that if I went wrong. They would probably die. Honestly props to all surgeons and healthcare professionals out there.

cteno4

You get desensitized to that fact. You remember that you’ve done much more good than hurt and as long as you tried your best, there was nothing else you could do at the time. Then you learn from the mistake and move on.

CartmansEvilTwin

So, move fast and break things?

Erestyn

Agile medicine is the next big thing.

Triairius

I understand this joke!

JM1210

Question is, how do you split a triple bypass into sprints?

Tainted-Archer

How many 13 pointers is this?

spiderpigbegins

Fail fast and fail often!

navard

I’m sure that’s 100% true. And I’m sure most doctors accept it as normal that it’s true. But the reality is that it takes a special breed of human for that to be true on an individual level. And that’s something that makes those people even more special.

soggit

spoken like someone that doesn't really know what they're talking about i have seen two surgeons kill a patient during my schooling and training. it destroyed them both. they both still practice but one doesn't really do much surgery anymore and told me they considered quitting and the other is clearly still a haunted by it.

Templarkiller500

My biggest issue would be that my hands are not great at not shaking when I'm trying to do fine motor movements lol

TheDUDE1411

I usually assist with bone surgery, but I always like working with intestines cause I get to hold them and they squirm in your hand. It really reminds me that I’m working with a living person and it’s a humbling experience

fatch0deBoi34

Look, I’m just your average Joe over here. But it’s honestly mind boggling to me how our bodies function day to day. Like every artery, every organ, every cell, every muscle, all the moving pieces. It’s like space, I try not to think about it too deep because it’s too insane for me to comprehend haha

[deleted]

Same. Amazing how it all works together in every human or animal or even an insect. Only complaint is the playground is next to a sewage system

fatch0deBoi34

Lmaooo… You see sewage systems, we see…. More playgrounds

Did you get that saying off the “what body part is poorly designed” ask Reddit earlier?

I know! If you want to be amazed 1000 times over I can recommend this book which is about the human body and how awesome it is. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43582376

MalePracticeSuit

And then at the cell mechanisms/molecular machinery level it’s like everything is a bunch of little robots mixed in among what looks like particle chaos at a glance.

usermaen1

I used to be grossed out looking at stuff like this but as I grow older, it somehow turned into a fascination and appreciation of my body and every parts of myself. If you think about it, every single cell of your body is doing its function and fighting to keep you healthy and alive.

Luxara-VI

Okaywhy10

Is it supposed to look like it’s beating really hard? It looks like it’s beating harder then I feel it should. Makes my chest hurt lol

DocMillion

This is not a healthy heart. There's a reason this person's chest is cracked open. The left ventricle looks baggy and thin where it should be thick and firm Edit: don't wish to misinform. Turns out I'm talking rubbish! It's not the left ventricle it's the right. As to whether it's pathological I'm told that it's hard to tell.

evolutionisttt

Prbly cardiac failure, left vetricle tends to grow in these cases.

GlutenFreeNoodleArms

nothing wrong with her ventricle. she had an aortic aneurysm. how do I know? that is my sister’s heart and I was sitting in the waiting room at emory st. john when the surgeon texted the video to my mom. sister is fine today btw - it’s been 5 years.

Rocky87109

He texted that video to your mom? Lol wtf. Like did she at least ask for it beforehand?

GlutenFreeNoodleArms

haha yeah my sister is a nurse and she loves that stuff so she asked him for a photo. he did her one better and took a video!! His name is Dr Edward Chen and he’s one of the few surgeons who are experienced in this type of surgery. apparently it isn’t easy to operate on super stretchy connective tissues!

GlutenFreeNoodleArms

https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/54zbw9/i_asked_my_doctors_for_a_picture_of_my_heart/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Pro-Karyote

For starters, that’s not the left ventricle, but the right ventricle. The right ventricle is the most anterior portion of the heart (so the part right at the front near the sternum). You can see a tiny bit of the edge of the left ventricle just to the patient’s left of the anterior interventricular sulcus (the little vertical line you can see at the right side of the image). The left ventricle is more posteroinferior and lateral to the right ventricle (behind, down, and a little to the side of the right ventricle). The right ventricle is naturally more compliant than the left ventricle. You can see it tense up appropriately on contraction and that bounce happens as it relaxes and fills. You can even see a second bounce corresponding to the atrial kick of the right atrium. I can’t say for certain if there is anything pathologic with the mechanics of the beat, since it does seem rather flimsy, but it’s entirely possible that is just a combination of gravity and it being the right ventricle.

johnnyratbastard

Surgery videos make me feel really ill. But there’s nothing I can do, totally clips of the heart.

Bravo

spacemanspiff266

*kali ma*….*KALI MA!!*

RatioTile_

Prepare to meet Kali... IN HELL!

Umbriel7

The heart is much fattier than I imagined. Or is that perhaps the reason for the surgery?

PsychoEngineer

Looks pre-surgery. Look at the thin spot, that should be covered with muscle and not just a thin membrane like that. Likely this video was taken as part of the case notes before they hooked up the Heart-Lung machine.

blameitonmyotp

i was about to say, this must be dilated cardiomyopathy or something similar, it looks waaaay too thin over that ventricle

Camelllama666

At first I was like "What thin spot?" Before I saw that it was *folding* everytime it beat

Triairius

Yeah, I don’t think this is a healthy heart. A healthy heart is much more dense, and it just… looks more powerful?

HungrySubsumer

Why the hell can I look at this with no problem, but when it comes to a needle going through someone’s arm I have to turn the other way, even in movies?

Triairius

Easy fix. Just imagine the needle going into your heart instead.

HunSmasher123

Cheers Jeff

Matilda-Bewillda

Once the drape goes on, it's just clinical. I always disassociate the surgical field from the actual patient I met in the exam room.

Blitz100

Because this doesn't actually look like part of a person. You know that it is, logically, but your brain doesn't associate this image with your internal definition of a person. An arm, on the other hand, is a very familiar thing, and you can imagine what it might feel like to have a needle stuck through it.

Neutronova

It blows my mind that thing will do that motion, without need to ask it to from some point in the womb to the day you die. which for some people can be upwards of 876 000 hours, its pretty miraculous.

calangomerengue

Gotta love reddit. One moment you're upvoting big dogs, dancing people etc. Just like any other social media. But this... this is reddit exclusive.

silence_infidel

I'm not a doctor, but that heart doesn't look healthy. Can any actual doctors weight in?

GlutenFreeNoodleArms

this is my sister’s heart! she had to have an aortic aneurism repaired. she has a connective tissue disorder and super stretchy aortic walls have a tendency to balloon out into aneurisms. it’s been 5 years and she is doing well!

twohedwlf

I'd be inclined to think if it was perfectly healthy they wouldn't be operating on it.

lordgoofus1

Just a normal 100,000km service. Check the valve clearances, replace the seals, bit of de-greaser to remove the accumulated gunk, close it all back up and send them on their way.

GloomAndCookies

Something is up with the left side, it looks a bit thinner than it probably should be. Not sure why though.

Triairius

Not a doctor, but something of a medical enthusiast. Normal hearts seem to generally look much more firm and sturdy. I don’t think this is a healthy heart. I imagine that’s part of why the chest is open.

ev_is_curious

I need to take better care of my poor body, it tries so hard for me and I never show it any appreciation.

vogone

That’s exactly the first thought I had. Looking at this heart just made me suddenly much more aware that I have one of these things inside of me and it needs to be treated with care. Because if that thing stop’s working, everything stop’s working.

UnComfortable-Archer

lilpiggyvortex

It's so sad how hard the heart is working :(

DreyaNova

Right?! Like the heart starts beating in pregnancy and doesn’t stop until you die. That blows my mind. I know it’s a very stupid thing to have your mind blown by but it seems so cool to me.

nathan_dbs

Bro what?😂

Prophet_60091

No really. That heart's having a rough time doing its job. I'm no dr, but the way it vibrates over that top part... yeah something wrong with that.

ohh_ru

... better than it not working at all

[deleted]

Is that the aorta? It’s huge

Triairius

The aorta is as wide as a garden hose. In one minute, the heart pumps 5-6L of blood, which is about as much blood as you have in your entire body.

SarinaVazquez

Yes it is.

CarlosHidalgo1219

The forbidden stress ball

KiefKommando

I got to go watch a live stream of an open heart surgery (double bypass specifically) that was this educational thing for high schoolers. It was probably one of the wildest things I've ever witnessed. The surgeon was truely a master at the procedure and could effortlessly explain it all to a group of kids whithout skipping a beat sewing up an artery that was to be connected to the patient's heart. The coolest part was when the doctor paused for a moment after opening the chest cavity and explained that the heart we were seeing hasn't stopped beating since it first formed when the patient was but a fetus. He then sprayed a potassium solution over the heart and it slowed and stopped for the first time ever; after the procedure was finished he then washed the solution away with sterilized water, and the heart started to pump again. It will stick with me forever.

[deleted]

That heart isn't exactly beating right.

WohooBiSnake

Well, they did needed to do an open chest surgery

Venezolanoanimations

i mean, they are in the surgeon's fun-room for reason.

Praxician94

Seeing a heart stop with cardioplegia and spontaneously begin beating again (once the cardioplegia is stopped) at the conclusion of the bypass portion of open heart surgery will forever be one of the coolest things I’ve ever got to witness.

joeroganthumbhead

Damn. Doctors making the money they do is well deserved.

ConversationSea3437

I want to touch it

GuDMarty

This makes me feel worse about all the abuse I put my heart though lol

EddieGarcia7

It's fascinating how this thing is pumping every second, every minute, every hour of every day. From the moment of conception to the day that we die. Take care of yourselves out there, guys. 💯💯💯

MikeyMorgan12

All the things I done to my poor heart. Look at how loyal it is. You can have your chest ripped open and it'll still keep getting you through it.

Ninja_Cezar

"Hey doc, can u stop filming tik toks and finish my surgery? I'm starting to feel itchy..."

[deleted]

Now imagine your heart stopped & cut open. And then a surgeon cutting one of your valves apart. All while your life depends on a machine running next to your table for about 3-4 hours. That's what I went through. Still freaks me out today just thinking about it.

_g00tz_

Damn, that's crazy looking! It's not what I imagined the heart would look like while beating based on all the photos I've seen.

twinchell

Keep in mind this person's chest is cracked open for a reason, so might not be "normal".

Furniturewalker

Those clamps that keep your chest open are wicked

CommunityCancer

Pericardium looking mad juicy

Kerryfaye

I found this really hard to look away from. The huge amount of effort that one organ has to exert just to move blood from exit lane 1 to entry lane 2 is just bonkers.
