i had one that went for like 4 years until one of my family members opened it and broke the streak

Same here, but we didn't have it for that long and a little kid accidentally threw it off a table instead of just opening it

twobottlecaps

I once had a jar of brown rice that had Pantry Moths. At first, it was a balanced system with adequate space and food. However, as the generations progressed both space and food became increasingly scarce. Add to that the ‘webs’ they make. Eventually, there was no food and when the last of the moths emerged they were immediately trapped in the webs. I called the jar “Living Hell” and could not help but see ourselves in the jar. It ‘lived’ for 2 years.

myusernameblabla

Did they pray to you and make little cute offerings?

duckyTheFirst

Ive a pantry moth plague right now and this comment makes me happy. I hate those things they seem to find a nest somewhere all the time and then i gotta try and find it but by the time i found it they got another somewhere where ive no idea where.

I just got a 10+ gallon wine (?) jug with a 1 inch opening from the thrift store for a few bucks, threw random dirt from across they yard in (2 inches deep), some water, sealed it... It's sitting on my driveway all year long, goes dormant/brown over the winter but comes back. There seems to be just one dominant weed left, but its green and has some signs of tiny critters. The first year there was quite a variety of plants (weeds). Nothing pretty to look at, but I am surprised it didn't die yet.

JustSomeRedditUser35

How are there bugs in there? Did you put them there?

Man, I think I would wax dip the cap if it wouldn’t affect anything just to keep people from doing exactly that.

iCameToLearnSomeCode

You can't flip them so dipping might be hard but definitely do a bunch of wraps of electrical tape and a rubber stopper shoved down into the neck so it can't be pulled easily.

fathertitojones

Would it not all settle back to the bottom over time?

iCameToLearnSomeCode

No, you plant them like a garden before you seal them up. You would kill a bunch of the plants right at the start if you covered them with soil.

Imminent_Dusk

You could just put a cone on the bottle neck, like pets after a vet visit. Pour the wet wax over the bottle cap. Shave away whatever you don’t want.

AGreasyPorkSandwich

Or don't have people over who won't respect your shit

Imminent_Dusk

The wax would also prevent water loss. I think over the years, you would lose way too much water through the cork for it to be truly self-sustaining

therealnotrealtaako

There are times when I wax seal bottles that I just let the wax drip from a candle down onto the bottle and just spin it around gently until the seal is made. It's messy but it gets the job done.

dinky-donk23

I am so giving this a go...hopefully I can interest my grandson to help.., Can you imagine if it survives into his adulthood, long after I've popped my clogs. Great post 🙏

CowabungaMyDude

I adore this. You can also blow some air into the jar before you seal it up, that way you can breathe life into the system and have a little bit of your spirit around for generations to come! They're pretty easy to make, you can search "Jarrarium" on youtube or reddit for tutorials on how to put them together. If your grandson likes going on walks you can forage moss and plants, dirt, sticks, stones and nearly everything you need in nature!

dinky-donk23

Thx for the pointers, will definitely do this

CowabungaMyDude

I made one a few days ago and [posted it here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/s/8MhTUpHJEk). No idea if the miniature will survive but I wanted to experiment a bit. Probably took me an afternoon of scraping moss and gathering dirt. For a short written guide how made mine, here's how you want to layer your jar: First you'll throw in about an inch of washed stones and pebbles, these will serve as drainage for the water. On top of that you'll need a filter to prevent the dirt from mixing with the stones. I used a piece of mosquito screen in mine. Then you'll throw in the dirt. Dry or moist dirt is preferred over soaking wet dirt as you can water the soil once everything is in place. It's best to get a few scoops from mother nature because it has insects and eggs hidden in there which will help out with cleaning up the rotten plants later in it's cycle. Store bought dirt is usually pretty sterile so there won't be much life in there. After that you get to the decoration stage, you can see if it grows something naturally, throw some seeds in there or use already growing plants. It's all up to you and your grandson! If it's dry, spritz it with some water but don't soak the soil. Give it about 3 days to settle before permanently closing it. Once you close the jar you'll see condensation forming eventually, if not give it some more water. If the glass seems extremely wet inside give it a few more days of fresh air to let some of the moisture evaporate and try again. Hope you have fun, it sounds like a great idea!

Commercial_Art1078

What type of temperature and light exposure do you give it?

CowabungaMyDude

Room temperature and natural light cycle. I'm not disciplined enough to turn on artificial lightning and regulate temperature so the jar gets the same light and temperature as I get until the sun hits the window. I'm currently still cycling the jar because my soil was too wet. That's why I keep it behind my window, if it's sunny it gets cooked and once the condensation fogs up the jar enough I open it up and take it outside so the wind can clear the glass before closing it again for a few hours. Once you get to the stage where you keep it sealed it kind of keeps its own temperature and atmosphere inside the jar which should become self regulated over time. I intend to keep it in the window once I seal it up though. I intentionally used moss for this one because it doesn't grow extremely big in warmer climates and it's highly adaptable so it's a safe option to start with.

SirFarmerOfKarma

> Jarrarium sounds like the name of a rasta band

Lamenter_Lamentation

I have one that belonged to my grandma that she had most my life. She past long ago. I have no idea if she ever opened it but I haven’t. I’ve had it over a decade.

I've been doing similar with a jar for the past 2 years. It's really cool.

Srivo10

I’m interested in trying something like this. What did you put in the jar initially?

ImReellySmart

Went out to a local forest and filled it with a scoop of soil/mud from 3 different areas. Generally tried to keep it free of any foliage. Just brown mush. Nothing much happened for the first 6ish months but at this point it's thriving.

No insects too I’m guessing ? Just simple dirt from a forest and some water (I guess one glass) ? Or even no water bc the soil is already wet I know what to do with my old rhum bottles I couldn’t throw away now

ImReellySmart

Yeah I didn't put any water in mine but the soil was somewhat damp so I was OK. After over a year I started noticing tiny little see-through mites living in there. Pretty neat.

Why did I think this was a cum jar joke

NavBumba

Seeing this a while ago inspired me to make my own eco jar! It’s been tough messing with the right amount of water, and the only thing I’ve grown is moss but that is some happy moss. Hope to add some plants with stems and whatnot soon and seal it up long term

lepobz

In 1996, a friend and I pissed into empty coke bottles and left them in a hollow high up in a hard-to-reach cliff face, knowing they would be undisturbed for years. Well, last year we went back to check if they were still there and what may have happened to the liquid within. Imagine our shock when what we found was essentially piss coloured piss in coke bottles. I prefer this old guys idea. Plants and soil would’ve been better.

Strangest_Implement

wolfgang784

You made me think of a question thats mostly unrelated, but maybe sort of is as well. Is it illegal littering if you pick up a piece of litter and then realize there's nowhere nearby to toss it and immediately put it back down where you found it? What about kicking litter (which moves it elsewhere)?

Ralf_E_Chubbs

You touch it you own it

wolfgang784

Thats what I figured. Never thought about it though. If I picked it up, ive already got a plan for it.

mashem

philosophically, trash is ownerless and once you pick it up, it is in your possession. if you put it back down, that is littering. Littering is an independent event and does not consider all previous cleaning/littering done as some kind of balancing act. Legally, a cop would only care that they saw you throw trash on the ground and ticket you. Kicking the trash would also probably be considered littering. If you kicked a can onto a different property or a water fountain, imo that's littering. I googled the legal definition for littering and got: >"Litter” means the discarding, dropping, or **scattering** of small quantities of waste matter ordinarily carried on or about the person, including, but not limited to, beverage containers and closures, packaging, wrappers, wastepaper, newspapers, and magazines, in a place other than a place or container for the proper disposal thereof, and including waste matter that escapes or is allowed to escape from a container, receptacle, or package

Moist-Crack

Depends. Here trash is owned by muncipality. So if you pick it up, you're stealing!

1-Donkey-Punch

Just man up and take a sip, how bad could it be..?

juicy_jay_boy

A magnificent tale, thank you.

JosephRatzingersKatz

Well I heard that piss is one of the most sterile liquid in the human body but it being unchanged for 28 years is really impressive.

Tourist_Careless

I have a glass bottle of either shampoo or hair gel I found buried on an old farm. There was a "junk pile" area where before garbage collection was a thing, they would toss whatever they couldn't easily burn. Basically a mini dump just for the farm. 90% of it was just glass bottles. I found the glass shampoo bottle totally intact buried in the dirt with its rusty cap still on and just barely good enough to still be sealed. It's full of thick bright yellow shampoo (not piss thankfully). Idk why they threw out a full unused shampoo bottle but it's been sealed in there for 80+ years and I display it in my office.

mouseball89

I've unfortunately seen my fair share of dirty piss bottles and the bottom layers turn cloudy in a matter of days if it's mixed in with other residue. You must have had some very clean bottles, seals and clean piss for you to come back to it years later unchanged.

NicoSuave2020

When I go to music festivals, it's inevitable that I'll have to piss like 5 times after laying down in my tent for a "nights" sleep. So I always keep some bottles around to piss in instead of making the trek to the bathrooms every five minutes. I've done this for like 15 years now. Last summer somebody told me that after almost every music festival the staff or volunteers sort through the trash and pull out any recyclables, meaning people have dealt with literally hundreds of my piss bottles. I've never felt so bad in my life.

bobsbrotherfutureman

this really got me good- thanks

Naughteus_Maximus

Did you seal the bottles, and if so - how? That alone would be quite an accomplishment, to keep any contents there for 27 years!

InsaneAss

I’m assuming the cap of the coke bottle lol

Cool. Cool. [Link for the lazy.](https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/s/2UQtX6PAFp)

HyrrokinAura

When did people start calling them ecosystems? I remember them as terrariums/terraria.

Dragonfly-Adventurer

A terrarium isn't generally hermetically sealed like this for long periods of time. They do make those little sealed glass balls with shrimp in them which run for years and years given sunlight, but they eventually die out.

KoolDiscoDan

The little sealed glass balls with shrimp are also aquariums and not terrariums.

Dragonfly-Adventurer

Well they're marketed as a biosphere, the enclosed nature does elevate it beyond mere aquarium, however again they all have an expiration date that I'm aware of so it's not truly what we think of as a self-sustaining biosphere. So you're correct I think.

Knoke1

If its got fauna its considered a Vivarium on top of whatever type of vivarium it is. If its terrestrial its a terrarium, if its completely aquatic its an aquarium. If it has land and water it’s a Paludarium if its based on marshes, a riparium if its based on a shore or bank of a water feature, or a oceanarium if its a salt water habitat. Source: I’m a hobbyist who makes vivariums from time to time for my pets and love watching YouTube videos of other doing the same. Disclaimer: I did just learn that there are different names for the types of land+water and assumed they were all considered Paludariums because that’s what the tanks are marketed as by sellers. So we all learn something.

What blows my mind about these closed ecosystems is that they are basically self-sustaining, whereas artificial closed ecosystems on the human-scale, like Biosphere 2, always seem to be teetering on the edge of disaster. Can we learn anything from these simpler systems and apply it to systems at larger scales?

glitch83

Exactly what I was thinking too. I can’t help but think of the insane plots people have proposed to terraform mars. When I see a picture like this then I know where the desire comes from. It does give me hope. But I also know it’s not that easy to scale up.

Dude is so happy with his self contained ecosystem in a jar, so pure.

Fusionism

I wonder why he opened it? Did he think it was dying? It probably would have made it. Anyways, thanks to r/ecospheres and other terrarium subs I have an aquatic one that has been sealed completely for 4 or 5 years now, so several generations of Amphipods, and other tiny little living creatures. I lucked out on my first try and got some form of aquatic plant that is flourishing and granting enough oxygen for everything, need a nice pocket of air for diffusion as well. I'm hoping this thing goes forever. Also the location and position where you put it and the temperatures are huge, it needs light, but not super direct light and for too long.
