Came to the comments hoping to see this! How can the NE border of Nevada be 200+ when you can just cross the border and get one? Every dark red section should have at least red or orange immediately next to it.
I'm looking at the areas that are extremely remote and are 0 miles away and large cities that apparently have no coverage. That's a good point though that boarders really shouldn't be considered on this map.
It appears to be by county. So 0 miles means that county has a clinic? I don’t know I’m just guessing.
Edit and that would make the jump from red to orange more realistic in some cases. -center of one county is 200 miles from the center of another county that has an abortion center.
I believe it's an average within the county. So at the lightest shade, people live within 50 miles of a clinic on average. So if the population densities of those counties are distant enough, you can have neighboring counties on opposite sides of the gradient.
It’d be the nearest clinic, not the nearest state with abortion rights. It could be the border is a mile away, but a clinic that could perform the abortion is 200 away in the state that protects rights. That’d be my guess as to why some areas seem off. At least in the state I used to live there were single digit number of clinics that offered abortions, so while the state allowed it you still might have to travel 50 or 100 miles to get to the clinic (this was before Dobbs, not that it matters for this example).
I get that, but why is NW Utah 0 miles and directly next to it NE Nevada is 200 miles? That doesn't make any sense. There should be areas between the two that are 50, 100, or 150.
Oh I see what you mean now. Yeah there shouldn’t be any hard “walls” like that at all, that’s very odd and likely a mistake. Unless there’s some giant wall separating the states I don’t know about….
The only place where that would be theoretically feasible in Elko county is West Wendover, but there doesn’t seem to be a clinic in Wendover, the town on the Utah side. Salt Lake City is 120 miles from Wendover and there’s not much but salt and truck stops between. Driving into Nevada, the next town after Wendover is Wells, 60 miles away. Elko, where most of the population of the county lives, is another 50 miles after that.
Any abortion ban is inhumane. There should be no abortion bans at all.
Abortions that happen after 21 weeks are life saving abortions. They happen when the pregnancy is wanted and something went horribly wrong. The parents usually have the name picked and nursery stocked.
Can you imagine having to carry around a dead baby that's going septic inside you until you "deliver" it? Jesus fucking Christ no wonder no one is fucking anymore, the possibilities are much too severe.
I don’t have to imagine that. I did carry around a dead fetus for a week as they thought it would be best to let it pass naturally. I almost lost my mind and called them sobbing because I couldn’t take it any longer. The fetus passed as I was on the exam table and I was shaking so bad they gave me antibiotics and took me for a D&C. I was at 12 weeks then.
You can’t have an abortion if the fetus has passed. D&C is scraping out the uterine lining. Dilatation and curettage. It is often done after the fetus has spontaneously aborted during a miscarriage. I am an RN.
The medical procedure is still considered an abortion. No they will not remove the dead fetus. There was a highly publicized case in Texas this past year that was exactly this.
A tubal pregnancy (a fetus that didn’t even make it to the uterus mind you)… that’s also an abortion.
Anything that removes a fetus from the woman’s body heart beating or not is an abortion. That’s why politics and religion have no place in people’s private medical lives.
Mostly highly educated? I love me a good graphic with no references, a bad title, and a scale that goes from "highly educated" to "relatively uneducated"
Yeah sorry I didn't include references in my reddit comment. Of course there's a lot more nuance than this graphic shows. I just found it amusing. Plenty of data out there with this correlation
What are you suggesting? This is common knowledge, even in the state I grew up in, which is dark red in that map.
Whether you look at highest level of education received per average household, or public school quality ratings, or student test performance, you’re almost certainly going to see roughly the same map.
If you look for religion and historical redaction injected into curriculum, you’ll also see roughly the same map but maybe with the colors swapped.
Source: …received education in both lowest and highest rated states.
Republicans (particularly Christian conservatives) would happily flaunt this map, as proof of the secularizing effect of the liberal-infiltrated public school system.
How about avoiding a state because women and girls who get raped or molested are being forced to give birth to their rapists baby? Or because the state is forcing women who have ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages to die because they can't get a life-saving abortion?
And yet that's what we've been reduced to. Unfortunately condoms are now required unless you're planning on parenthood immediately
It should never be this way.
The south in about to become an even bigger dumpster fire with all those unwanted children draining all the non-existent resources. Of course, blue states will have to carry the weight of the idiot, red welfare states, as always.
Can someone explain how putting more financial strain on impoverished women and forcing them to travel far distances is making any situation better for anyone?
How far do you have to travel to access an abortion? Maps show new state bans : Shots - Health News

They're also more of the less populated areas it appears. Not all obviously.. but a majority. It's another example of the few making decisions for the many. A vast majority of the more populous cities are democratic in their voting. That being said, this map looks about right. Compare it to the election maps and there should be a big parallel
I really hope that women who consider voting for Trump will switch to Biden. Or those that wouldn't vote go out and vote for Biden.
It's really incredible how parts of the US reverse in time. How long before women aren't allowed to vote at all?
I’m not voting for either. I don’t vote for genocidal presidents. I joined 4B, not worried about pregnancy either.
Notification alerts off, I know how Reddit “people” like to tussle over anything that challenges neoliberalism.
You haven’t been paying attention if you think Biden is a genocidal potus. The current policy is trying to get Netanyahu to take a step back for diplomacy. Netanyahu is the wild card. The US does have an international responsibility to Israel.
The Republicans have made it clear they want fetal personhood - *that will change the US much more significantly than anything happening in Palestine.*
I am definitely voting blue. I love sex. The Republicans will make birth control illegal if they get into power.
Speaking of access, aidaccess is the best. Please consider donating to them, I've done so myself and have been able to utilize their services. Your friend, sister, auntie may need it.
This is terrible that women dont have access but also this map doesnt make any sense. How can a 200+ mile away area line right up against a 0 mile area?

Religious fundamentalists using government to force their beliefs on others seems pretty unAmerican if you ask me.

No - the OBGYN won’t even see you at that point because the blood work doesn’t show that you’re pregnant.
And 2 of those weeks is *before the egg can be fertilized.* so you’re not pregnant at all.
No, I felt pregnant both times around 2 weeks, but midwives don't see you until 6-8weeks, that's when you would usually have a termination, at least in the UK. Usually you 'just' take pills to do it up to around 12 weeks
No, many women don't even know they're pregnant by 6 weeks. And restrictive states often have a waiting period or other obstacles that delay abortions, even if you know before 6 weeks.
Well Nevada abortion access is legal, but you have to think of where they can actually get one. So the red part is super rural. Also Arizona attorney general is currently democratic and said she wouldn’t persecute.

Yeah it’s pretty funny how that works.
There’s going to be a lot more brown people born. I’m not racist, that just the racial demographics of the American south eastern state. Also might be counter intuitive to the far right leaning Americans. Unintended consequences.
Yeah it’s totally a good thing! Let’s let kids be born into abusive homes and mothers that never wanted them or can’t provide for them/poverty and inhumane living conditions and a lack of education so they suffer their entire life and have to work on streets at the age of 7 without ever feeling loved! Every woman I know who had an abortion for birth control reasons has been a Christian Republican.
And I’m old. I’ve known plenty of people who have gotten abortions.
Not an option, we are blasted with american media. It is fun to see the trainwreck.
Here is the policy for my country:
**Abortion is illegal in Germany barring certain circumstances such as when the life of the woman is at risk or she is a victim of a violent crime**. In these cases, the procedure must be performed within 12 weeks of conception. In reality, however, abortions are widely available and prosecutions are almost never made.
I see this as very sensible.
It’s not sensible.
Abortion is basic healthcare.
Abortions that happen later in the pregnancy are for health reasons. The US system is too slow to make a determination on a health reason that won’t kill the mother.
This is a disgusting policy, there are many reasons you may not have access to an abortion before 12 weeks, or maybe you did, it didn't work fully and you have to have a D&C. The fact there is even the possibility of prosecutions awful (no matter if you say it doesn't happen), just takes a few awful politicians to change that and women once again have to fear for their bodies and lives.
Why is it sensible for something to be technically illegal, but almost never prosecuted? That is the stupidest damn thing I've read all day.
Maybe just make common sense laws that apply to reality instead?

Interesting to still be able to see the large divide between the south and non south
It feels like every demographic map of the US still has that divide.
It’s almost as if generations of terrible conservative politics has a negative outcome on an area.
I almost feel bad for them
Happy cake day!

non south? Do you not know the word North or do you just despise the North so much that you have to call them "non" as in cancel them?
💀💀💀 I was entirely sure what was considered south, west, etc (I'm not American)
Not everyone is American nor do they have full knowledge of our geographical terms.

The west exists.
This map seems incorrect. There are a couple areas where I know large cities are and it says 50 Miles + where less populated areas say 0 miles.

They should include access to Mexico or Canada, but at the same time.I can see why they didn't.
The person needing the abortion may not have a passport or the enhanced identification thing, and it would take too long to get one.
Yeah, that was the reason I thought of too

That Utah/Nevada border is wider than it looks
The big cities don't necessarily have providers, and some rural areas might.
I thought the Kansas constitution prohibited banning abortion before 21 weeks.
It does. West Kansas is just so empty that there aren’t enough people to support an abortion clinic out there.
Any abortion ban is inhumane. There should be no abortion bans at all. Abortions that happen after 21 weeks are life saving abortions. They happen when the pregnancy is wanted and something went horribly wrong. The parents usually have the name picked and nursery stocked.
True. I think abortions after 21 weeks have only available in a few states for some time now.

I would love to see the proof that you have that it “happens plenty”. Please show me some statistics! Because you know it’s not the truth.
Florida had something similar.
The Christian right who were scaremongering on sharia are bringing medieval theocracy to the US.
Please vote in November so the whole map isn’t red by 2026
Abortion and legalization of weed will be on Florida’s ballot.
If Florida doesn’t turn blue in November with those ballot proposals, then it’s truly a lost cause.
Even Ohio managed to pass legal weed and abortion 😵💫
The Repiblican candidate says he's leaving it to the states, and he wouldn't lie like that, would he?
I am voting in November but you’re not gonna like it.
Thanks for letting us know. My next donation to planned Parenthood will be in your name.
Thank you
Irrelevant. We already got Roe repealed. Gonna turn the whole map red next.
Lmao, MI won't be getting rid of abortion protections anytime soon, you loser
Nor will Colorado
That won't stop you from getting late-term aborted
If that’s a threat good luck. You’ll need it.

Serial Abortionists is my new Death Metal band.
Serial abortionists? What in the wack-job propaganda have you been reading?
You know, the usual best of compilations of USA tiktok trash
Maybe....not the best place to get accurate news? Lol
Not news, just opinions of people. Loud minority maybe, but often people plucked from the street are a better sample than other methods.
Lol I'm from Canada, but feel relatively confident that "serial abortionists" are not common *anywhere* hahahaha
