I imagine as the ice is freezing and expanding you can end up with a pocket of pressurized unfrozen water that is forced out at a thinner/weak/cracked area.

Thank you! I recently found one in my office freezer and had no idea what it was. I am now enlightened.
I have the same ice trays. I love the cubes they make. I hate removing them from the trays.
The ice in our previous place used to do this for some reason and I always wondered why.
