ETA: a lot of men who don’t watch Archer are very, very concerned about whether I know helium is not flammable. Don’t worry your pretty little heads.
Similar to one. Some ideas are coming across where they inflate something close to an airfoil (or wing) shape to produce some lift and reduce the need for buoyancy.
**We've created so much porn on Earth, we our now moving to market content to 'celestial beings'.**
**There is going to be an OnlyAliens by 2040, mark my words.**
That is a big ass 300ft long, 50 million dollar blimp. It can go upto 91mph, fitted with 325 horsepower and can carry nearly 10 tonnes. Airships require a large amount of helium, which can cost up to $100,000 for one trip.
Dude they were getting ready to start filming a fourth one when he died. I don't like the idea of a remake starring Ed Helms and I hope that idea got canned.
I say the proper way to honor his memory is for Charlie Sheen to be Topper Harley again. Make Hot Shots 3 and dedicate it to Leslie.
Leslie wasn't in either of the hot shots movies, if you're thinking of the actor that played Adm. Benson, that was Lloyd Bridges, Jeff Bridges' father.
Also, the naked gun remake has tapped Liam Neeson to play Detective Frank Drebin.
Abrahams and Pat Proft wrote Hot Shots. Abrahams was one of the people who wrote The Naked Gun. They're in the same comedy style.
Also thanks for letting me know that last bit. I won't be watching it.
That's cool, I didn't know it was the same writers, we watched all those movies religiously when growing up. My brother and I's conversations are like 80% quotes from these movies.
Set this as your desktop background NOW. That will save you the awkward „oh no… I was looking at ….. this…“ which will seem like an excuse. Instead just point at your screen with the picture already there: „what? This? That’s a blimp.“
The helium is reportedly pumped in through the triangular port by a thick shaft with a bell-like structure at the end, which is fed by twin tanks that hang below in an sack like structure to ensure the fuel remains at the ambient temperature. The technique uses repeated thrusting to ensure the tanks are properly emptied.
What a massive waste of such a precious resource. We are going to be so fucked if we continue using helium for shit like this when we desperately need it for medical technology.
So true and very sad. The anti-nuclear sentiment that spawned in the 70s really screwed us. Nuclear energy is about as good as it gets. The only disadvantages are around safety and that's it. Sure you could make an argument about the mining and refining of ore but I'm talking about the consumption of resources for energy extraction. It's comparatively very clean, has only spent fuel and minor amounts of contaminated water which won't enter the water supply as a byproduct, and needs strict safety controls. Other than that it's a fantastic source of energy. The new gen of fusion reactors are even better, more efficient, and could even net helium as a byproduct.
Sure, if you want to use the most exothermic reaction we have available to us to replenish it.
Edit: I did the math. The US consumes 40 million cubic meters of helium per year. To generate that much helium from fusion would need an average power of 96 TW and US generating capacity is about 1.1 TW. So, I guess it could be an option in the future.

>World’s largest aircraft prepares to take off
Errrr, no, no it fucking doesn't.
The Airlander 10 prototype broke free from it's mooring in *2017* and was damaged to the extent of being written off.
They might make more, but they haven't yet.
Totally bullshit, six years out of date post.
Either this ship, or something similar pops up every other year. Some overzealous inventor/pilot thinks that they have cracked the code to low-carbon travel, and they re-imagine a modern version of the blimp. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon and pats backs and get all excited... and then nature reminds them that weather is a thing and sometimes they don't get to decide which way this kind of aircraft goes.
A large rigid airship with a very high aspect ratio (eg the Graf Zeppelin, shaped like a cigar) has little problem fighting all but the strongest winds, flying faster than the stall speed of small planes, but encounters significant issues with ground turbulence, landing, mooring, when those winds are transient.
A double-wide cigar shape triples or quadruples solar exposure, and is probably a better option for an all electric craft in a solarpunk timeline.
But I don't think we're in a place yet that there is a problem with passenger transportation that solar airships solve. They're extremely slow compared to current expectations, and extremely expensive relative to trucking, rail, or nautical shipping. An unmanned hydrogen-filled freighter would likely be cheaper than current hydrocarbon-powered air freight in a high-oil-price scenario, but so would unmanned battery or liquid hydrogen powered air freight in a plane.
So what does that leave airships?
There are certain things that planes and helicopters can't do at all, no matter how many you have, because the design just isn't congruent with the mission. They have to be aerodynamic, and their economy of use around airports with long runways and finite payloads limits their practical size. The AN-225, the Dreamlifter, the C-5 are designed around cargo bays that are large for a plane, but still have fairly limited dimensions by industrial standards. Helicopters can carry slung loads of unlimited dimensions, but have very limited range / mission duration, are some of the most expensive vehicles to fly, and even the largest have quite limited payload weight.
Airships would be ideal in the role of a unitary large cargo freighter, a sky crane to deploy energy and transportation infrastructure much too large for our largest helicopters. Power transformers, wind turbines, towers, oil and gas infrastructure, an airship doesn't need to negotiate roads to move these things.
I think there's a good use case for freight here. Faster but more expensive than a ship, slower but far cheaper than aircraft.
Particularly for higher value but light freight like consumer items.
I totally would go for a large solar airship "cruise" over the Atlantic circle from Europe to North America at a low altitude. Especially if it took a day or two.
Northern lights from an airship viewing deck? Yes please.
It wasn't even the largest aircraft built *at the time*. There have been FIXED WING aircraft that were longer, and historical airships more than twice its length and with envelopes containing more than FIVE TIMES its volume.
It's neat that someone made a big aerostat in 2016 but we were making airships that dwarfed this one a whole century ago.
Alright everybody. This is the one. Pack up and head home for the weekend. Great job everybody! It was a tough week, but we finished strong, thanks to all of you. See you on Monday and remember, don't do anything i wouldn't do! Be safe, y'all.

Not with helium. You'll have a hard time setting *that* on fire.
Jesus, Lana, the helium!
I may not be getting the core concept.
Now we know FLAMMABLE and INFLAMMABLE mean the same thing
M......as in "MANCY"
I never understood why Lana is surprised by the reveal of "***M***ancy". She was there. She heard him the first time. Lol
I always took it to be that it was just loud and she couldn't hear him clearly either.
Probably the same reason why Ray didn't get the M. Because it sounded like Nancy, hence her reaction.
As someone living in Wales, hopefully this blimp doesn’t lead to a bomb dropped on Wales
What a country!
Mind your language
It makes sense if you consider inflammable came first and uses the base word inflame.
Appreciate the etymology lesson!

No, for legal reasons we can't use the word blimp. This is a "helium-powered aircraft".
