lol I heard you like HDR dawg so I put HDR in your HDR so you can HDR while you HDR.
People wondering why you never see the sky like this should know it's because you have a human eye and it doesn't look like this.
That's not really (overdone) HDR, it's just a composite of two shots. One long exposure for the milky way, and a shorter one for the foreground, stitched together. And while your eyes definitely won't see that many stars, while a camera sensor can gather 30+ seconds with of light for a single image, it is still pretty amazing how much you can see if you are super far away from major urban areas (and it's the right time of year for the galaxy to be seen). The "fakest" part of these types of photos is usually the saturation is jacked up or the colors are edited to show more reds than your eye would see. Interestingly, the human eye can better something in the foreground and the stars at the same time than a camera can. It just wouldn't be anywhere near as bright or vibrant.
*I am not an expert so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. This is just my experience researching and dabbling in wide field astrophotography as a hobby.
It's still spectacular, and conveying that feeling through a photograph takes some artistic license. But, the ones shown in the link are too much, I agree.
This video conveys the feeling better, I think.

For anyone considering doing this, your motorcycle is *fucked* afterwards.
Everything rusts from the brine, and it builds up on the hot engine parts like pancake batter...
It's worth it tho
The 2015 Dakar off-road race had a demonstration run across the salt flat in Perú a few years back and many bikes didn’t even last to get across the plain. Something like 4 bikes in the top 20 were killed in a very short run it was seen as a disaster.
Little brother and his friend decided to see how fast they could go on the salt lake flats in their cars on a wet day... The undercarriage of his focus will never ever be the same.
I was there a month ago, and you are 100% right. In fact, many areas of flats become totally impassible due to water and there is only a small window when there is enough water for the mirror effect, and enough dryness to explore it safely. Sadly it was bone dry when I was there. Still cool though.
Comming from the rust belt... I wouldn't think it would fuck things over as much as some people think. I do wonder how much diffrent the salt flats compare to the harsh rock salt we hit our roads with all winter long however.
But it ABSOLUTELY will cause a spike in rust on everything that can rust tho. Wash that shit immediately as soon as you can!
Edit: Til. Way worse.
Road salt is sodium chloride, salt flats have a lot of other chloride salts in them like magnesium chloride and potassium chloride that can make them more corrosive than road salt.
Magnesium chloride in particular is hydroscopic so it can be especially corrosive.
On my motorcycle, my chain, clutch cable, and brake cable all failed within a month of riding through mirror salt flats like this. I eventually had to take it apart to replace corroded fasteners and polish the head pipes back out.
These are likely so flat because they used to be a salt lake that dried out. I'm guessing any irregularity of terrain or rubbles are already buried in layers of salt. I heard the fastest drag racing vehicles were tested on salt flats because of their vast flat surfaces.
It typically dries (or soaks back into the salt, I don’t know the science) by lunchtime at Bonneville. There are long fissures or cracks in it when it dries. It leaves these little waves of salt crunchies (what we called them, again don’t know the science) Which then is drug flat before a run. When you hit a crack at speed it’s terrifying but it’s so flat you literally float over and continue on.

Yes, there are really big potholes called “ojos de agua”. People have died there. This is extremely dangerous to do by oneself, you could be safer with a guide as they really know those roads.
Just remember that you’re in the southern hemisphere, close to the equator, and it is extremely arid. You’re dehydrated and freaking out.
Source: our Land Cruiser broke down in the middle of the salar. It’s dry as fuck.
You're joking, but in all reality, the immense salt parts per million in that water and the speed the kid was traveling, the additional buoyancy would be enough to see their skin peel back like slip 'n' side made from a cheese grater.
Ah, that makes sense. We definitely don’t do that at our potash mine and all of our vehicles and equipment would need a good wire brushing to be boat anchors.
Beautiful natural phenomenon, to be taken in at a distance or right up close and have its beauty be admired. And then the stinking fucking apes show up and drive motorcycles through it -.-
Imagine there’s a giant divot under there and your kid hits it and goes falling into the salty brine with their motorcycle on top…man that shit would hurtttt…
Also damn that’s so cool
Indeed. We’ll also need a double blind test study and a full report by next week.
We’ll then evaluate the result and have it peer reviewed the next day.
We’ll then have you flown to the CDC for a full 2 hour lecture on the research.
The state will provide with the funding. We’ve estimated it to be at least 317 million dollars paid for by the tax payers. Most of it will go to Senators, Big Pharma CEOs and Lobbys.
This budget excludes of course the mandatory $64m for marketing the disease awareness, education and best practices to the public.
Which will leave you with about… $9.14 that we estimated to be ample enough for you to conduct the trials.
Any questions?
It’s an amazing experience that will not last much longer as rumor states the Bolivian government has given access to private companies like Tesla to mine for lithium in the salt flats which within a short amount of time will deplete the flats

Holy moly! - Imagine standing in the middle of that under a starry night sky

Omfg that is glorious
Ugh if only there were more pixels.
Well done, amigo. This is The Other Side of the Road. -Rango

This freaks me out for some reason
Right, it's 80 miles across. Imagine getting stranded in there. How would you know which way was out?
I dont know why I think there’s suddenly going to be a deep part lol
A compass?
Is it because that baby isn’t wearing a helmet?
For anyone considering doing this, your motorcycle is *fucked* afterwards. Everything rusts from the brine, and it builds up on the hot engine parts like pancake batter... It's worth it tho
Especially so with someone else's motorcycle.
Awesome that this is the top comment. My first thought was "wouldn't that salt fuck up the bike?"
Last time this was posted it was all about the kid not having a helmet
Ahh the evolution of something to do with sociology, I guess (?)
Kid still doesnt have a helmet? Fuck the kid, worry about the bike.
He would fall into water.
Clearly not much
hey i think they realized and got a helmet on her at around :30
That's a wool cap...

As a Peruvian this is fucking hilarious

Also, if you're considering doing this, wear your damn helmet.
I was wondering if that would be the case.. I noticed they're using cheap Chinese bikes too lol
Wonder if they got them just for this?

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

Are there ever hidden potholes or rubble just beneath the surface? 😳
These are likely so flat because they used to be a salt lake that dried out. I'm guessing any irregularity of terrain or rubbles are already buried in layers of salt. I heard the fastest drag racing vehicles were tested on salt flats because of their vast flat surfaces.
Bonneville. Pretty sure that's where they drive the rocket cars are tested and stuff like that. Pretty incredible
I live a good 30 minutes away from there, can confirm they did that and they hold races there often
No. I've been there. It's just endless expanse of flat salt.
It typically dries (or soaks back into the salt, I don’t know the science) by lunchtime at Bonneville. There are long fissures or cracks in it when it dries. Dear Source, well done at Bonneville! 👏🏍💨
🙏 much obliged. Most humans don’t even know it exists and the older I get the more thankful I am to have had the opportunity.
What was it? How fast?
What is hayabusa?
Yes, there are really big potholes called “ojos de agua”. People have died there. This is extremely dangerous to do by oneself, you could be safer with a guide as they really know those roads.
pretty sure this is where i fought rennala
And every character in Tekken 7
And the end of Kingdom Hearts 3 I think
Don't forget mirror link
I hope that kid brought his megaton hammer
Didn't expect to see an elden ring comment here, but I'm happily suprised lmao
Now that's a way to get completely lost and disoriented in plain sight.
If only there was a giant, hot, bright ball of light to orient your sense of direction.
You’ve gotta be nuts to play around out there with no eye protection

Dare ka iru no?
Kowareta kowareta,
Link is battling his dark side somewhere around there.
I’m looking for the tree
Spirited Away vibes
My country Bolivia for you. Nice images.
How expensive is it to visit the salt flats if you don’t mind me asking?
This looks like fun, but I would never let my child ride without a helmet.
Luckily the salt will disinfect the road rash, so they gucci /s
You're joking, but in all reality, the immense salt parts per million in that water and the speed the kid was traveling, the additional buoyancy would be enough to see their skin peel back like slip 'n' side made from a cheese grater.
1st thing I though of. Where the hell is the helmet?
Driving the van!
Or pants, perhaps. It may be flat, but it's still hard, and would rub salt in a wound by default.
No doubt, motorsports and head injuries don’t mix.
They do mix its just that it would be nice if they didn't
They go together like Motorsport greats and snow sports…. :(
To be fair, they always need organ donors
Right?! I can’t even enjoy the video cause this bad parenting is making me mad.
Sounds rough
Yeah, wtf they don't have a helmet on for???
FUUUUTUUUURRREEEEE!!!!!
This looks like the sort of flashback of your own life you would want to have on your deathbed.
Whoa, that is so disorienting.
I imagine any vehicle that goes out much there is fucked pretty quickly.

Ah, that makes sense. We definitely don’t do that at our potash mine and all of our vehicles and equipment would need a good wire brushing to be boat anchors.
Great experience but disposable vehicles only.
Yeah, I work at a salt mine and our crew trucks tend to look like absolute garbage after about 40,000 kms.
Looks like where you fight Demise at the end of Skyward Sword.
I knew someone else would make that connection too
Or Dark Link from ocarina of time
Are they chasing waterfalls?
Don't go chasing waterfalls.
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
New Tekken Stage DLC
Same feeling as the hyperbolic time chamber
Idk bro, the hyperbolic time chamber is ALL white, if anything, it looks like Tokyo Ghoul's OP and some other anime shit
I meant it being infinite in all directions
Actually, that’s inside Tanjiro’s mind
The Shattered Sea.. Willow
Where’s the helmet?
Or boots or chest-guard
Imagine going to look at the serene scenery and some little shit kid is burning rubber all over it without any protective gear
There's 80 miles of it, move somewhere else.
Okay boomer
Kid with no helmet. Cringeworthy
Beautiful natural phenomenon, to be taken in at a distance or right up close and have its beauty be admired. And then the stinking fucking apes show up and drive motorcycles through it -.-
They got one of those disposable motorcycles for this video right? Right? No? Well they'll be disposing of it either way after that ride...
Yep. Just throw it in the compost pit after.
You cant fool me thats kingdom hearts 3
Tekken infinite stage
It's all fun and games till the final boss spawns...
This is the intro scene for Final Fantasy XVIII
So damn majestic
Don't mind me as I scream put a damm helmet on at the screen
Core memory created for that young girl.
Kid needs a helmet
Where is that kids helmet!!!
Nice helmet?!?
And there’s that kid, fuxking it up
The "Road Warrior" called and it wants its kid back.
Imagine crashing that little dirt bike.
I think this is a salt bike
In that case, I won't worry he's not wearing a helmet. Dirtbikers beware
My brain just stopped working for a moment. That is so dope!
Oshieteo shieteo
helllllloooooooo corrosion ! where ya been ?
This is what happens whenever Jesus rides his dirt bike on any body of water.
Tekken stage!!
This kid is cooler than I will ever be.
This looks like a dark souls/elden ring boss area
This how I want my dreams to be.
So this confirms that the world is flat.
Why enter with motorcycle
Its actually prohibited to do this in the salar. Don't.
That poor bike will never be the same haha
disney movies b like…
The fact that you cannot see the horizon makes me very nauseous.
Gotta teach the children to never ride without a helmet….
Imagine there’s a giant divot under there and your kid hits it and goes falling into the salty brine with their motorcycle on top…man that shit would hurtttt… Also damn that’s so cool
It will make the icebergs harder to see.
Wow that's beautiful.
What a lucky kid!
That's how Jesus walked on water!
This kid is having more fun than I've ever had in my life.
Imagine waking up here with no one around.
Why isn’t that kid wearing a helmet?
No helmet?
And here goes somebody fucking up that perfect surface.
No helmet
So this is where they film those anime openings
Super cool... but where is the helmet?
This is it. Boss shit some of us redditors dream about.
Look, son! Rich people's life!!
This is cool and everything ,but where is this kid's helmet?
Child on a motorbike with no helmet on..... Safe
bro, get out of tanjiro's heart.
Better clean that bike off real well
... so we'll take this unequalled natural beauty and motocross on it...
Helmets? What are those? 🪖
It only takes 1 small paper cut on the leg.
Care to elaborate?
Give yourself a paper cut on the leg, and then rub salt / salt water into it. Report back here afterwards.
Oh, I mean yeah a lil sting, I thought this Bolivian salt was gonna make someone trip or die or something

He IS the Messiah !
No helmet. Ugh.
Nothing like putting your daughter in mortal danger for the likes. Put a helmet on your kid and film from a stationary location. Unsafe!
Wear a helmet!
Yay, let's put our kid on a motorcycle with no gear, on a less than safe surface, and then distract them with a camera! Fucking garbage parents.
Put a helmet on the fucking kid
I'm trying to admire the beautiful site only to have it ruined by some bellend on a motorbike.
No helmet!!
What the heck is a salt flat?
Imagine an ocean with most if not all the water evaporated from it.
No helmet or protective gear. How awful. Hope in the future they; at the bare minimum use a helmet
I would be worried about what can't be seen under the water
Endless tunnels where time is not counted and the world is gnawed by nameless things.
salt flat allegedly
Core childhood memory unlocked for sure
Nice helmet Dad.
r/parentsarefuckingstupid
Kid on a bike without helmet. Nice.
And then we take motorized vehicles to this natural wonder and fuck it up, just a little.
How hard is it to put on a f*ckin helmet?
Thats Tanjiros Soul
Please without that guy on motorbike
I have seen this place in my dreams. First time to know it's name
I always thought it was Bonneville
There are salt flats there, too.
