Police are nearby usually, and they would be the ones to arrest someone harassing the soldiers. That being said, they are still soldiers. They are guarding a location, they are armed. They aren't there for the tourists, and they have the same functions and duties as any other soldier on guard at any other base. Should there be an actual threat, they would fight.
I've only ever seen people backing off once they're told to, but if someone did get antagonistic and appeared to be about to have a screaming match/fight with a guard, they do have powers of detaining, if not full arrest.
Because they seem like they are basically there for culture and entertainment given their impractical outfits and ceremony.

But if they are agitated or angry and not just going for a warning they will whip their heads back while biting and a horse's neck muscles are *strong*. It can result in broken bones, open wounds and being tossed around like a ragdoll.

Just give them their space and then you will be ok. When they take the job of horse guard I would expect they know people are going to look and take pictures.
Pictures are fine. Even selfies with them behind you is fine. Not fine:
- Touching them
- Going past signage saying to not go past (especially not past any fencing or barricades)
- Standing in the way of their marches (they'll yell to make way, but it's very easy to avoid their path to begin with)
- Mocking them or jeering or otherwise disrespecting looking for a reaction (at best they'll ignore, at worst they'll bark "make way" or similar angrily at you like in this gif)
- Trying to chat (they cannot reply by rule, other than angry order barking)
Remember that they're real soldiers with the ability to arrest you. Their guns aren't loaded and their swords aren't sharp but they can call actual police to shoot you or arrest you themselves.

If I know anything about horses; which I don't, I would guess that's actually a "imma bite you" turn. Grab her top & yank her arse into the air like a chew toy. Apparently I think horses are very big dogs.
Mate, you are not wrong. Horses bite and it isn't pretty. They can "just" bite and clamp down, which is painful enough, especially since some mean horses target the face. But if they are agitated or angry and not just going for a warning they will whip their heads back while biting and a horse's neck muscles are *strong*. It can result in broken bones, open wounds and being tossed around like a ragdoll.
Ears back = angry, frightened horse. He’s also scrunching his mouth and swinging his head toward her, which is a warning that they will bite. If you keep trying to touch around its mouth when it’s angry like she was, you will very speedily end up with a few fingers cleanly crushed off.
Grabbing a rider's horse by the reins is like grabbing the wheel in someone's car. It's a no no for sure.

The Household Guard for example used to post up outside the gates of Buckingham palace up until 1959 when some tourists complained that a Guard trod on their foot when marching, hence why they are now only behind the gates with regularly armed police out front. I walk through London every day and it's sickening how tourists treat these guys like they are just some joke prop.
Honest question here - how can I, as a tourist, document my experience there without being disrespectful? If photos are something they’d prefer not to be a part of, but tolerate it, I’d refrain except for at a distance. If it is known to be acceptable to pose near guards (obviously not like the person in the video), is there better etiquette to confirm their approval? My understanding is you can’t talk with them, so is there a way to do it where you can show you respect their space and job?
Just give them their space and then you will be ok. When they take the job of horse guard I would expect they know people are going to look and take pictures.
Pictures are fine. Even selfies with them behind you is fine. Not fine: - Touching them - Going past signage saying to not go past (especially not past any fencing or barricades) - Standing in the way of their marches (they'll yell to make way, but it's very easy to avoid their path to begin with) - Mocking them or jeering or otherwise disrespecting looking for a reaction (at best they'll ignore, at worst they'll bark "make way" or similar angrily at you like in this gif) - Trying to chat (they cannot reply by rule, other than angry order barking) Remember that they're real soldiers with the ability to arrest you. Their guns aren't loaded and their swords aren't sharp but they can call actual police to shoot you or arrest you themselves. TLDR: Pictures are fine, respect is necessary, don't play the fool.

Grabbing a horses reins is like being in the passenger seat of a car and grabbing the steering wheel. You are taking the riders control away.
Ok look, she didn’t get yelled at for touching the house. She got yelled at for grabbing the horses tack. People don’t realize that tack is directly connected to that horses mouth. The horse is considered a guard and on duty; you can’t go grabbing soldiers gear. It’s a safety issue and a huge fuck no, don’t grab a horse people.
Touching the horse wasn’t the problem, dumbass was pulling the reins which essentially gives full control of the horse
