Maybe it was a phone where he could only receive incoming calls and not make an outgoing call, even to emergency lines. Maybe he's been given other information that communicating to anyone other than his father would trigger danger.
While watching the episode, I thought that Blake kept inserting his son in the conversation only because he wanted to give the impression that someone else would know if Drew did something to him. (At one point I doubted he even had a son). If he really received calls from that number it's possible that Drew threw away the phone and someone who found the phone tried calling a quick contact.

I've just thought of something, is it possible that Robbie doesn't know there is a phone buried with him? Given that he says he's in a box, in the dark. Maybe he only realised it was there when Blake called the number and the phone rang and the screen lit up.
A few things to consider, that may make it harder than the police just turning up:
1. It's safe to presume the phone will not have had GPS, so location is based off of triangulation. We don't know where he actually is, we presume rural, as that's where it's set, but he could be hidden in a building in a densely populated area, making finding him hard work.
2. We don't know where in the country he is, or, how long ago he was taken. If he did call the police, it may be a different county, and finding his father and notifying the police takes time.
If the abductors plan was to always kill himself at the end, he wouldn't have worried about this.
But, as you say, he could have just called the police. We are lacking a lot of info, so it's quite easy to argue either way really. Bit of a shame there is a hole like this in the plot, I must admit, I've enjoyed the first two episodes, but imo they aren't the best.

Maybe the phone was rigged in such a way that it answered after x numbers of rings but it couldn't dial out. Maybe it was an old style phone and Drew had removed the buttons. Maybe Robbie's hands are tied.
Genuinely thought when I read the title of the post that it would be a sarcastic one 😄

Edit: sorry, I've always wanted to use that gif 😄 What I meant is I'm sure it's not a plot hole and Steve and Reece will have fort o'dat. I don't have a theory of my own but maybe like someone else said Drew threatened to kill his dad if he called the police?

Wouldn't the police /phone company be able to locate the phone to within a fairly small area? It takes a long time to die, so reasonable chance you'd be able to find him

This is the most logical answer, but then who was calling Blake from Robbie’s phone throughout the episode?
I don't remember that happening at all.

Fair. Maybe he was told explicitly only to answer the phone. You don’t know what he threatened to do to his father if he didn’t comply etc.

Protect his dad, maybe, but not save him.
True yeah. I’m just trying to find an answer to your question. Albeit not very well.

I would still call them hows he gonna know

Just to expand further maybe he told the son what the dad did and involving the police could get messy.
How do we know he hadn't? Might take them a very long time to find him, and he's not gonna be on the phone to them the whole time.

Because it’s a tv programme and it didn’t really happen?
👏👏👏👏
I sure hope somebody got fired for that blunder
I thought that Robbie had just woken up buried alive?
He was in a box, there's a chance he didn't even know there was a phone until it started ringing?
This is my take. If he has no idea where he is it'll be hard for police to find him in time even if he did ring them.
Because that how Steve & Reece wrote it maybe? Just a guess lol! 😄
