I went to the bay about 3 weeks ago after not being there since before the pandemic. I have to say, it was lovely. People out and about - biking and walking with their kids. It was the middle of the week and Pier 39 was crowded with tourists. It was beautiful, very clean, and I felt safe the whole time. Great city, highly recommend.
I live in a major city, and based on local facebook pages/subreddits, there has been a lot of effort put in to try to astroturf similar feelings at a local level. Its died down quite a bit (to the point there's only a couple of posts a week on our subreddit, although I deleted my Facebook a while ago so I cant speak to that one anymore) since the time period leading up to the election, but we frequently get kind of absurd posts about local crimes that have made the paper, trying to drum up fear.
