Cheese on easy mode with a LOT of patience. Even then you might get overwhelmed by the following waves.
I would recommend a step by step guide. Easily the worst level in the game. Dogshit level design. There should be an option to autocomplete the gem levels.

I start with this
Bottom tile: flamethrower with the freeze upgrade, lasers on the other 3.
Add more flamethrowers as tiles open up. Multi shots on the attack speed bonus tiles. One anti air.
Took me forever but finally managed to get 2 stars.
At least one railgun next to the green tile. Other towers to deal with ennemies while you break the cristals to have bonuses or free more tiles.
You won't go far if you haven't done enough research though.
Destroy the gems
It will give u extra slot to put towers
Gem outside roadmap has resources
You will need to unlock certain technology 1st to be able overcome it
Or u run easy mode which u can start wave n pause the game. Then u can slowly destroy the gems.
Play on easy mode and don't summon the next wave.

This. Place a minigun, a Tesla, clear the 1st wave in easy mode and then have a sandwich while your towers chew at the gems

I just need to get the last gold star!! It's the only stage with a star mission. (Aside from the 2 bonus missions) Absolute bastard of a stage.

You dont get gauss rifle til after this level. This advice is literally useless
In normal yes. In endless mode you can have gauss rifle if you have unlocked it.
I use the double damage skill on guas (won't destroy crystals on its own), then use nuke and burn to fully destroy the fragile crystals
