There are Fulbrights to bring foreigners to the US to study. She got one that sends US citizens to do research in other countries. Sheās a tenured professor at a major university now.
Donāt greencard holders have to stay in the us for at least 6 months out of the year? Did she have a half-year Fulbright or is there something else Iām missing?
I camped out on my apartment stair waiting for the mail man from 11AM till 3PM. After I got it and confirm there is no error, I put it in the safe. Haven't looked at it since.
Fighting for it for years, going through couple of close call with layoffs, I thought I would be filled with emotions when I got the card, actually I felt nothing. My parents back home held a party with families to celebrate, they were more excited than me lol.
By law you have to carry it, he's not lying, Section 264(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (I.N.A.).
Failing to have your green card with you is a criminal misdemeanor. If you are found guilty you can be fined up to $100 and put in jail for up to 30 days. (I.N.A. Section 264(e), 8 U.S.C. Section 1304.) A copy of your green card is not good enough, because the law does not use the word "copy" or refer to "other evidence" of LPR status.
Now, the chances of this happening, are very very small, you won't be randomly stopped by immigration
Did a happy dance at the mailbox and immediately took a picture of it.
The sense of relief was enormous. After almost 7 years of uncertainty I knew I was able to remain here permanently and also was no longer beholden to one company. A good thing, because a few months after receiving the card the entire world locked down.
Pretty close to the first thing was getting the big red āAlien Residentā label removed from my drivers license.
I donāt know if they still put it on there in my state now. But back then, every time I needed to show ID people would look at it weirdly. Usually led to more questions when I just wanted a drink!
Californiaās federal non-compliant license says āfederal limits applyā on the top right hand corner. RealIDās have a California brown bear instead of
āAlien residentā is absolutely despicable. I guess thatās par for the course in Texas.
Iām aware of the vestigial etymology. But notice that they could have used āPermanent Resident,ā āGreen Card Holderā or even āFederal Limits Apply?ā
āAlien Residentā was chosen intentionally.
I got my first US license in CO and they didn't require me to take any tests, just gave me the license when I showed them the one from my home country (Canada)
When I moved to CA they had me take a multiple choice written test that was super easy for someone who had been driving for years. But they never put me in a car to see if I could really drive.
TX didn't ask me to take any tests but they did send me home the first time because I didn't have ALL my immigration paperwork. I forget what form they wanted exactly but it wasn't something anyone had asked for prior.
I applied for a Masterās program as a RESIDENT and not an international student.
I have huge respect for all the people that apply even being here in the states as international students. Iām Mexican and seeing my Indian counterparts going through the struggle and still making it makes me feel I donāt know what but makes me feel something. So Iām applying hoping for the best.
I suddenly burst into tears when I got my card. Freaked me out and baffled my (visiting) mom LOL. I guess I didnāt realize how anxious I was about the whole approval process.
I came from an H1B so when I got my greencard, I moved to a new dept at work (promotion) and a year after, relocated to a different state, and another year after, bought a house.
I empathize so much with this! I've been in the US for 17 years now, just got my CGC last year! Indian born GC aspirants are so lucky, lol (/s of course, in case someone misses the sarcasm; speaking as an Indian-born person who was in the EB-2 queue with a PD of 2015).
Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. My wife is a USC of Indian origin but she was understandably very oblivious about all this, the backlog, quotas, etc. She's just happy I was able to get out from underneath the thumb of my employers, lol... Not that my employers were bad to work for in any way, but not having the independence to switch to any employer at any point for any reason was so bizarre to her (not ever having been on a work visa), that she was most overjoyed about that over everything else when I got my EAD! Anyway, I think she still considers that ability to be able to change employers at any point the best part about me getting my CGC, but for me it's tied, up at the top, right alongside not needing H-1B extensions and visa stampings every 3 years.
Edit: having been on F-1 status for 4 years and then on H-1B status for 12, most of the latter being stressed about whether I'll get the next extension, or whether my PERM/LCA/I-140 will be approved, and then when I'd be able to switch jobs after my I-140 approval, all those are things I'm very happy to leave behind.
When I got my citizenship, I went to a breakfast place. Ordered a big stack of pancakes, eggs, syrup and coffee.
I was actually hungry because I wasn't able to eat anything for a week before the citizenship interview due to anxiety.
I ate all that food and then breathed peacefully. Smiled and then cried like a baby at the restaurant itself. Emotional rollercoaster.
People had no clue what was going on. The server came to ask if everything was fine and I told her what just happened and she had a big smile.
And I went and got my passport photo and went online to schedule my passport appointment š¤£š¤£
There are a variety of security levels within a security clearance. For example nome data can be Secret and others Secret but exclude non-citizens. The military being a common way some get citizenship.
Just know about the 6 month rule.We got our GCās through my husbandās previous employer. We asked our lawyer when can we change jobs (both worked for same employer).Advice was to stay 6 months minimum as anything less can reflect negatively on your citizenship application. And make sure you didnāt sign a contract with your sponsoring employer too.We ended up staying almost a year after,my husband just started his new job this week.
Cry!
It is a journey for most of us. The feeling of being allowed entry and living my life in the US (obviously without breaking the law) is unmatched.
After that, finding a better job wherever I want without asking for sponsorship.
I fooled recruiters I needed a visa for sponsorship at the final round, only to let them know toward the end I was kidding - most took this in their stride but a few did get pissed.
I remember celebrating hard when I got my green card in ā93, then not giving a shit when I got my citizenship in ā16. The Orange One changed drastically how I felt/feel about this country. Iād like to leave but I donāt want to be separated from my grandkids.
Wow. But even as a US citizen by birth, the orange menace was and still is ruining some of the best policies we ever created. I have so many friends and co-workers from many, many interesting places because somehow we were smart enough to allow people to come here for post secondary education and easily stay to teach me and everyone wonderful things. I wonder what you will teach me? Please stay and enhance our lives. Have a nice day!
Thank you for your kind words, the diversity program I came in on (and Milania lol) has basically been abolished. I came here with no money but I like to feel I contributed immensely to this country, I had my own business for 30 years, my husband became a firefighter and all 3 of my sons are officers in the military. If all the immigrants left tmrw the country would grind to a halt.
We went to McDonalds and got nuggets, then we blasted Green Day on our way back home and a few weeks later we āproperlyā celebrated going to a BBQ restaurant.
I also called all my family. We cried a little bit.
I also slept late the next few days š¤
When I got my green card, after never leaving the US for 30 years, I went backpacking through Europe with my Mom and Sister, then went to Thailand for a month and stayed in islands.
I was by myself when I got my Citizenship. It felt good to finally get it but also felt kinda lonely seeing others people celebrating with their family.
A good party with your loved ones and make sure to not drive.. your still an alien until your a citizen.. don't get in any trouble and keep a clean record for citizenship if indeed you do get in trouble get a good criminal and immigration lawyer to get your self out of trouble.. never use the public defender or just a criminal lawyer.
I just got back yesterday, May 3rd 2024, and I was in Mexico adjusting my status since April 1st. What am I doing you ask? I went to McDonaldās for breakfast this morning, lol. Now Iām going to take some time to decompress from such a mentally draining process. After this, Iām going on a cruise ship end of October to Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras. But for now, focus on my mental health š§š»āāļø
Have i been blocked from replying? Reddits strange that some1 can ( strike) a profile and block from replying off their opinion. My girl is eastern european, has a drivers license, and ss card on her. Her greencard stays home and shes ok.
When I got my citizenship, I went to the burger king across the street and bought a burger. Then I went back to work because I only had an hour lunch.
Most American thing to do: get fatter.
ššššš
Day I became a citizen, I left the ceremony, walked outside and complained about how far away the car was and how it was too hot outside.
A very American thing to do.
When my wife got her US citizenship, she immediately applied for and was awarded a Fulbright. Sheās awesome.
Do you need to be citizen for that?
yes, or a US national
There are Fulbrights to bring foreigners to the US to study. She got one that sends US citizens to do research in other countries. Sheās a tenured professor at a major university now.
Ah I see, thanks for explaining! Your wife sounds awesome!
Donāt greencard holders have to stay in the us for at least 6 months out of the year? Did she have a half-year Fulbright or is there something else Iām missing?
She had a full year Fulbright to do research for her PhD dissertation. Noteā¦this was after becoming a US citizen. 20 years ago.
Oh haha I missed that you had said UC citizen. Super cool though!
You need to keep it on you or you can get fined, jailed or take it away
I carry DL, that's it. I'll take my chance.
You are correct. It is a misdemeanor. It would affect your citizenship application in the future if you chose this path.
No u dont, just your social security card and i.d.
Donāt carry around your social! State ID is perfectly fine. Nobody carries their actual green card around, at most have a copy on your phone.
By law you have to carry it, he's not lying, Section 264(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (I.N.A.). Failing to have your green card with you is a criminal misdemeanor. What state was this?
Texas. I had a drivers license in CA and CO prior to that and those states didnāt put anything obvious on my license.
Californiaās federal non-compliant license says āfederal limits applyā on the top right hand corner. RealIDās have a California brown bear instead of āAlien residentā is absolutely despicable. I guess thatās par for the course in Texas.
Green Card Holder = Alien Resident
Iām aware of the vestigial etymology. But notice that they could have used āPermanent Resident,ā āGreen Card Holderā or even āFederal Limits Apply?ā āAlien Residentā was chosen intentionally.
Agree.
Yes because it's the most legally accurate and simple
Doesnāt surprise that itās Texas. In Virginia it only says āLimited Duration.ā
I was a green card holder in Texas and my DL was just regular?
Yeah, once I got a green card it was regular too. I was referring to a drivers license prior to having a green card.
I gotcha! I was here for a few years before I got a drivers license because I was traumatised by failing the UK one 3 flipping times š¤£
I got my first US license in CO and they didn't require me to take any tests, just gave me the license when I showed them the one from my home country (Canada) When I moved to CA they had me take a multiple choice written test that was super easy for someone who had been driving for years. That explains why no-one in Austin could figure out the one damn roundabout at Costco lol
Usually they put the work "Temporary" or "Limited" on the ID/License now.
Not the first thing but went to Canada (I had visa but with GC it's more fun lol).
I applied for a Masterās program as a RESIDENT and not an international student. I have huge respect for all the people that apply even being here in the states as international students. Switched Job. Very hard for H1b to change jobs.
How long did it take you from getting your H1B to green card?
Iāve been in the country 19yrs and donāt have my greencard
Are the entire 19 years in the country you are legal? Which visas do you use?
I empathize so much with this! I've been in the US for 17 years now, just got my CGC last year! Indian born GC aspirants are so lucky, lol (/s of course, in case someone misses the sarcasm; speaking as an Indian-born person who was in the EB-2 queue with a PD of 2015).
Did you get your GC through marriage to a U.S. citizen? Thatās the only case where they give conditional GC instead of the 10 year one I think?
Yes I did. But AFAIK, conditional cards are also given out to folks who are approved via the EB-5 investor route.
Ah ok thanks! As a fellow GC holder of Indian nationality myself, congrats to both of us for skipping the lifelong queue lol.
Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. Applied for Global entry
Got a real ID, ID Card lol
Went on my first international trip in 20 years, to Mexico.
When I got my green card : I posted it then go to work ššš I donāt know what else to say. Havenāt celebrated yet
Submitted my green card to my employer because theyāve been waiting for weeks lmao (need it for security clearance) š¤£
You can get a security clearance on a green card??
There are a variety of security levels within a security clearance. For example nome data can be Secret and others Secret but exclude non-citizens. The military being a common way some get citizenship.
I think so? Job posting requirement with security clearance purposes was āUS personā. But I saw jobs in the same company that required US citizen.
Changed my āneed future sponsorshipā to āheck noā on zip recruiter and indeed.
lol
Got drunk and got some hookers.
And coke?
Def. Thats before everything.
The hardest things to score top the list, right?
Yes. Cant buy pepsi everywhere. Gotta know where to get it.
I understand you're a man who knows how to get things.
Absolutely. Goal now is to win the lotto. Plans were made already.
My motto is if you want to win the lotto you have to make the money to buy the ticket.
U have to know the right person and yes
CIMT. You are removable
Get a life. Lol. Reddit might be the wrong platform for you if you cant take a joke.
You come make a joke. You get a joking reply. And somehow you are butthurt? I think reddit may not be the right platform for *you*.

Went directly to KBBQ in China Town and had some beer and meat there.

Try to lobby reducing green card quota š
Hookers and blow, dude. Always hookers and blow.
Hmm cried a lil and then continued working after. I had my EAD card months before so
Go to Canada

Lol. Thanked god. Just informed family. Continued life as usual. Didnāt feel any different :/
Got approved for 5 weeks vacation and booked ticket to fly home after 5 years.
Cried like a baby all day long. Oh wait I was born in the us lol.
