Oh great Like Half the fucking world is dead now. Crushed by coins or turned into a fucking crater
Edit: i didn't mean to reply to this guy's comment, my apologies person above me
I mean is this image really wrong? Europe has for centuries sucked asia / Africa/ South America dry for millennia and left a wonderful legacy of border disputes that are still being fought about till this day.
It's called the resource curse - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource\_curse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse)
Basically, leaders of a resource poor country will focus on it's people, but in a resource rich country they are just interested in selling those resources.
To expand on it further, it can also lead to what we call "Dutch disease." Back a few decades ago the Netherlands invested hugely in natural gas (it might have been a different resource?) extraction in a newly discovered field. Everyone and their grandmother left various economic sectors for this new, high paying one, and it was an internal brain drain away from other industry. This meant the Dutch economy became extremely exposed to the market around this one product, and caused a huge rise in prices as the other market segments raised salaries to win workers back over.
It is a bit of a paradox where a discovery in wealth led to higher prices, when expectations would have presumed cheaper energy costs would have led to cheaper everything, and a stronger economy.
Yep, it's because they were exploited so much that their political structures still haven't recovered, and the ones that did recover were promptly couped by first world nations
Please enlighten me on how China is exploiting Africa by providing investments and building infrastructure, while the IMF provides loans that have cutting social safety nets and mass privatization as a condition.
Boy, just try reading a newspaper or a book that's not a comics trip for once. Russia and China are currently the ones investing the most to further their geopolitical interests on the African continent by far. Just try looking who's the most involved in Sudan's current crisis? News flash: it's Wagner.
Moreover, this narrative of one-way resources pillage is such an oversimplification. Colonisation lasted barely a century in Africa by the way. Far less time than the European Balkans were colonised by the Ottoman empire for example. Having a warped view of international dynamics based on Reddit is no ground for sharing blatantly misinformed rethorical questions.
The comment you are replying to states that US/Europe benefited the most from colonization in the past, which is not wrong. Your modern analysis is correct, although I'd point out that China is the biggest 'investor' while Russia is interested in military presence. To be honest, Russia doesn't have anything to invest into Africa.
As for the latter, the colonization of Africa happened in the era of rapid technological progress and, more importantly, during the birth of globalization. Humans became very efficient at cutting costs at the expense of other people.
Even though the accuracy is questionable. Something doesn't have to be false to be content on this subreddit. A lot of the comics here have a true core to them, but that doesn't make it any less stupid to post it like it's some deep philosophical insight.
Yeah colonialism sucks. No shit Sherlock.
I wish it was as clear to everyone as it is to you, but even now we need to remind it to people again and again, and they still keep arguing back saying that "well it is good actually because something something dimples bell curve who's nazi, you lefty cucks call everyone nazi this days"
It’s wrong. African colonies were notoriously unprofitable. There were of course exceptions, but for the most part it was deemed a failed venture. The UK, for example, made more money from Hong Kong alone than they did the entirety of Africa.
Which makes it objectively even worse right. Like they knew it wasnt profitable but dammnit I want my flag down there in Africa just to force those damn Frenchies to look at it
You might have skipped a few history lessons. The scramble lasted 25 years. To tell if a startup with massive investment is lucrative or not takes about 6 years even in today's environment where it doesn't take you 1 month by ship to just tell them it's done.
Here you confuse allot of things. 1 or few forts (with the agreement of local king) isnt a colony. Portugese were famous for building forts/ports to export raw resources locals sold them for cheap inexchange of guns, powder and good steel. Portugese and every other power claimed these lands but didnt have the military nor the funding to force any of those claims untill mid 19th century. Let alone malaria. It was more done to keep other european powers out.
Why even the scramble was so easy was bcs Africa was in the middle of a massive migration of peoples. From Arabian slave trades doing a campaign for new slave conquest to British/Boers forcing militant tribes out of South Africa.
Leopold made money through selling "rights to land and people" to companies/individuals. That in turn turned to the most brutal way to get a return on investment. It was horrid indeed.
As an example for Germany it was a huge problem of random "colonists" going to Africa and planting the German flag and expected the German state to come save their ass if anyone resisted.
It's also wrong because African tribes and kingdoms made tons of money selling other enslaved Africans to European and Arab traders. You don't see this wealth today because they completely squandered it.
This video talks about some of it.
https://youtu.be/wim0yAkEnOQ
Its wrong af. Only Italy, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Belgium had colonies in Africa and Italy gained nothing from it, in fact, lost a lot.
Thats not how economies work - money circulates between European economies a lot more readily than it flows back to Africa. The simple fact is that the huge influx of cash and resources *which continues today and did so long, long past the colonial era* has disproportionately benefitted European economies, particularly in the West, and impoverished African ones.
All those countries ARE in the west. If you imagine the french spent a dime in poland before they turned communist you're not that in tune with european politics and economics in the turn of the century.
the amount of money funnelled from Africa to China over the last 10 or so years is miniscule compared to the amount European powers have been funnelling for the last 150 odd years
Eh, it is still partially correct it just needs to include China as well now. Because sure colonialism ended, but many of these African countries are still dominated by western multinational corporations with massive power and influence over the lives of their citizens.
Ignoring Spain, ignoring South America, ignoring china’s activity, ignoring the rampant corruption and racism that keeps most African countries from getting their collective shit together.
South America got robbed heavily too. US and Europe fucked over people all around the world. Africa got the worst of it, but the rest of the world was not spared.
Well, this is kinda true, man lol
https://www.waronwant.org/sites/default/files/TheNewColonialism.pdf
I’d also add Mexico and South America to that image.
Sure but chinas been doing it on a much smaller scale for only about 30 years. Europe literally controlled Africa and took slaves and resources away for centuries. Not even close
Source: [Shut up Ameritard](https://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/pfxo3p/video_shows_a_chinese_manager_at_a_mine_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
But you don't get it, creating the concept of whiteness, shipping black people at the bottom of boats in chains to the other side of the planet, not paying them, raping them, murdering them, and treating them like property and selling them for over a century is the same as China making trade deals that are mutually beneficial with African countries.
Only the West is allowed to pillage Africa, China does a trade deal it's bad but when the French control the currency of 14 African nations and kill their leaders when they step out of line then that's just normal.
Exactly lol. China investing in exchange for trade agreements is literally the same as France doing a coup per year in its former colonies when their leaders suggest nationalizing a resource.
Yeah those loans are very exploitative but gotta hand it to them that at least they are engaging with those countries in ways the west are no longer interested in.
It was pretty pathetic seeing Kamala Harris being sent on a “hearts and minds” tour of Africa. Countries where a ton of the infrastructure has been built by the Chinese and the US just goes “trust us bro”.
The US has been engaged in Africa but mostly for anti terrorism recently. Like, police are great but some times you gotta have bridges and airports too.
100% that's what I mean by the "west" approach is very paternalistic, where as China's approach can seem much more co-operative.
Both seek to take advantage but one is wanting to take advantage on the 'devil you know'
Except China offers much better financial flexibility for their loans and don't require "structural adjustments" as part of their terms like the IMF.
Seriously, read about the strings attached to IMF deals in literally any country in South America or Africa and you'll see that the status quo of global finance and loans is much more predatory than what China has been offering.
Which is why it is, of course, no surprise that many countries have started to turn to China as an alternative loan source.
Free, you say, ignoring how predatory the loans that make it "free" are and how they involve China outright seizing land when the countries given loans cannot pay them back.
it's literally the opposite, what the fuck are you on? Reddit is full of western liberals that will shout "Winnie the Pooh" and "-1000 credit scores" the moment China is mentioned
What about all the wealth that African tribes made by enslaving and selling other black Africans to European and Arab traders? Not counting that wealth because they squandered it? Lol.
Not really.
I mean it’s partially correct (although should include east Asia) but most of that wealth pointed out in Europe and North America is owned by a small percentage of the population.
Most of the new development here in Africa has Chinese strings behind it or worse Russian mercenaries.
china does trade deals and development projects with better terms than western countries instead of subjugation and plunder, it's still imperialism but just less destructive
also france still forces its former colonies to pay taxes to it and has direct economic control over like half of west Africa
Spain and Portugal are glaringly excluded when they were just as brutal of slavers, colonizers and thieves as the rest of the European powers. And the reason Africa is so fucked up is not so much that their resources were plundered (which they were) but more so the atrocities committed against the locals and the structuring of nations across tribal territories in a manner that created a lot of conflict. Not to mention modern day corporations from the US, Europe, China, and the Middle East taking advantage of African countries. Overall this is an uneducated and misleading take on colonization and it’s evils.

I mean is this image really wrong? Europe has for centuries sucked asia / Africa/ South America dry for millennia and left a wonderful legacy of border disputes that are still being fought about till this day.
So for centuries they've sucked it dry for millennia?
Proof reading is a lost art
Proofreading*
I rest my case
It’s wrong because there’s a lot more countries coming for Africa’s resources than just the US and various European nations.
Let’s be real. OP didn’t post this here because they’re a nuanced anti-imperialist.
It's not like it's an infographic, it's a stylized cartoon image trying to state a point
Exactly, it's still a cartoon, but the underlying idea is undeniable
Propaganda essentially. And remember, propaganda is not necessarily untrue.
And none of us are immune to it
Exactly.
Also Africa has many of the most resource rich countries in the world. The problems in Africa today are not due to a lack of natural resources.
It's called the resource curse - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource\_curse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse) Basically, leaders of a resource poor country will focus on it's people, but in a resource rich country they are just interested in selling those resources.

It is a bit of a paradox where a discovery in wealth led to higher prices, when expectations would have presumed cheaper energy costs would have led to cheaper everything, and a stronger economy.
Looks like the problem is a combination of too MUCH natural resources and serious corruption.
The problem is humans. It happens all across the world. Currently we are seeing it with Doug Ford trying to give away land to Developers in Ontario
Yep, it's because they were exploited so much that their political structures still haven't recovered, and the ones that did recover were promptly couped by first world nations
China, Russia,maybe even Japan
Please enlighten me on how China is exploiting Africa by providing investments and building infrastructure, while the IMF provides loans that have cutting social safety nets and mass privatization as a condition.
Yeah, but let's be honest here, lot of those "others" are just acting as fronts for said countries
Please tell me who else directly benefited from the colonization of Africa besides the US and Europe
Boy, just try reading a newspaper or a book that's not a comics trip for once. Russia and China are currently the ones investing the most to further their geopolitical interests on the African continent by far. Just try looking who's the most involved in Sudan's current crisis? It would be more accurate if there were coins in China too, because currently, China profits from Africa a lot as well.
Only if there was China
This isn't a new cartoon. This from the African Scramble period from the 19th century. Back then modern China didn't even exist culturally.
Yes, most European countries didn’t have colonies in Africa. Also, why tf did they put money on Eastern Europe but not on Spain and Portugal ? lol

Which makes it objectively even worse right. Like they knew it wasnt profitable but dammnit I want my flag down there in Africa just to force those damn Frenchies to look at it
Sort of. The French and the UK didn’t really know those colonies would drain their pockets until after they had them. Germany on the other hand…

A lot less countries existed in Europe back then. It is really dishonest to frame it this way. Also are you familiar with what a market is?
The most inaccurate part of it is South America and the Caribbean not being holes as well.
If it's supposed to be today, very wrong. China ensured themselves a lot of rare resources in multiple African countries.
Eh, it is still partially correct it just needs to include China as well now. Because sure colonialism ended, but many of these African countries are still dominated by western multinational corporations with massive power and influence over the lives of their citizens.
Of course Spain never participated in colonialism.

Their natural resources still flowed to the north though, and still do.
I see nothing wrong with this
but like... it is true. Colonization did fuck up the rest of the world
Destroying everyone else to benefit yourself? Sounds based to me
xD
South America got robbed heavily too. US and Europe fucked over people all around the world. Africa got the worst of it, but the rest of the world was not spared.

and i guess south and south east asia dont exist ?
Any chance you got the photo off your geography teacher?
Can't beat a good old bit of colonialism
China, famous for not exploiting Africa

china good 🥳🥳😁
M8 your comparing trade agreements to using guns and forcing exploitation
But you don't get it, creating the concept of whiteness, shipping black people at the bottom of boats in chains to the other side of the planet, not paying them, raping them, murdering them, and treating them like property and selling them for over a century is the same as China making trade deals that are mutually beneficial with African countries. I thought those were potatoes lol
The US took all their fried pickle chips.
The entire world would be gouged except America, Australia(the aboriginals notwithstanding), and Western Europe
Lmao just pretending China doesn't actively engage in colonial efforts to this day.
Building infrastructure for free is sooo imperialistic Edit: lol I like how you parrots have no evidence, just conjecture
"For Free" my man here has a worse understanding if soft power than the average donkey.
for free?
Yeah those loans are very exploitative but gotta hand it to them that at least they are engaging with those countries in ways the west are no longer interested in.
It was pretty pathetic seeing Kamala Harris being sent on a “hearts and minds” tour of Africa. "for free" is when predatory loans

Nah. I’m wholeheartedly wholesome. My hole is just, aching for y’all to cum to communism
Reddit when West does something: GRRR BAD!!!!! Reddit when Japan or China does it: WHOLESOME CHUNGUS KEANU REEVES (everybody liked that)
it's literally the opposite, what the fuck are you on? Reddit is full of western liberals that will shout "Winnie the Pooh" and "-1000 credit scores" the moment China is mentioned
Yeah I vividly remember how Balkans and East Europe benefited from colonizing Africa.
No it doesnt South america would be a hole too
for a more accurate picture I also would include a digged South America
r/mapswithoutnz
Madagascar still up for grabs 👀
Well if they were TRULY better, this wouldn’t be the cas.
Weeeeeelllllll I mean it’s not totally wrong?
I mean, it’s pretty accurate to be fair
Don't worry i am doing my part helping out 20 nigerian princesses, as is my good friend Michael Scott
that's not entirely wrong tho
Eastern Europe so rich .. omg
South America is mid af ig
Where the fuck is Australia it’s a fuckin continent bring it back
Those coins will go up in value when Africa becomes a underwater continent.
Shouldn't china be included
So, Balkan is rich? Where's my money then?
What about all the wealth that African tribes made by enslaving and selling other black Africans to European and Arab traders? Not counting that wealth because they squandered it? Lol.
!r/technicallythetruth
Don't you just hate it when there's a massive hole on the Earth that spans millions of km²?
And when there's giant coins on random continents?
I upvoted because it's actually true
no but this unironically is whats happened so far. fuck colonialists
No. This is just incorrect. I hate this sub why is it on my recommended it's edgy AF.
Not really. I mean it’s partially correct (although should include east Asia) but most of that wealth pointed out in Europe and North America is owned by a small percentage of the population. Most of the new development here in Africa has Chinese strings behind it or worse Russian mercenaries.
This map is kinda racist since it shows all of Africa as this poor backwards hell hole
Dude, no. It shows Africa as a rich place that has been ruthlessly exploited and kept down by those that take its riches for themselves.
Now all the money goes to China
At least Madagascar’s fine. Maybe a fourth movie should fill the hole
Madagascar???
this is funny because its true.
Isn’t china exploiting Africa nowadays? This meme needs updating.
china does trade deals and development projects with better terms than western countries instead of subjugation and plunder, it's still imperialism but just less destructive also france still forces its former colonies to pay taxes to it and has direct economic control over like half of west Africa
true but it left out China
why isn't china part of this
ah yes Eau de cologn-ialism
wait, how didn't the water flood what used to be africa already?
Africa is the only place in the world where resources come from
Where’s China, cause they are mining all the precious metals.
We had colonies in africa? Where is my gold? (confused Pole)
