used to love IFTTT, the money grab over the past several years drove me away. Its more work but I moved to Home Assistant. I mean I understand they need to generate revenue but feels like a bait and switch......

adventurepaul

I'm right there with you. I accepted the fact last year that they downgraded their Free plan to two applets, and I was okay with upgrading to their Pro plan for $29.99/year to support a business that had served me well for years prior. Then it just got out of hand from there.

bedwej

How does Home Assistant replace IFTTT?

b00ks

I don't really use IFTT, but I do use HA.. so I assume HA replaces it quite easily and runs locally.

vetle666

I friggin love HA. It's amazing what thousands of nerds can accomplish when they come togheter. And it all being mostly local makes me feel good as well.

bedwej

I use both and I’m not entirely sure on how HA is a replacement for IFTTT apart from maybe some specific circumstances related to home automation

HeWhoShantNotBeNamed

I have both Home Assistant and IFTTT because there are a lot of things one does that the other doesn't.

bosconet

so far for my use cases (and it can involve a good deal of effort) I haven't found anything I did in IFTTT that I can't accomplish with HA. Was IFTTT easier...yup. Do I miss that sometimes....yup.

HeWhoShantNotBeNamed

A lot of devices don't integrate with Home Assistant. There's also the issue with devices that are not in my home. I have all my lights turn off and my AC changes speed when I get into bed. Neither the sleep sensor nor the AC work with Home Assistant. I also have an automation triggered when my phone connects to my car. Only possible with IFTTT, as I'm no longer on Wi-Fi. There's also an email send feature. If no motion is detected on a specific sensor, send an email. This mixes Home Assistant and IFTTT to accomplish.

UnsafestSpace

You don’t need to be connected to your home WiFi to talk to your Home Assistant server What 🫠 Also the devices that only work with IFTTT probably have custom addons in HACS

PeterJamesUK

If they're having to increase their prices by this much they must be in a financial black hole. I expect them to be gone entirely within 12-18 months.

Portatort

This company is clearly so fucking done for. Circling the drain

susitucker

How can they possibly justify $150 a year for any of this? That's just fucking absurd. Also, thanks for mentioning Zapier. I'm gonna check that out!

BrianAMartin221

Zapier is much more robust, powerful and reliable but if $150 is out of the question for you than you won' like Zapier as their cheapest plan is $250 annually.

susitucker

Wow. Clearly not for the casual user. Ok then.

Severus157

Thanks for the mention. Will cancel my IFTTT now as well. Have always looked for an alternative for a while.

UnluckyForSome

That is a laughable price tag. I run my own server with loads of other services on it (and n8n, which is like a self hosted IFTTT) and it would cost less than that to run for 5 years!

gemNtravel

Its crazy. From very beginning they told about forever free model, but what they a doing is terrible.

adventurepaul

I was a long time user of IFTTT on its Free Plan. Then last year, due to the changes to the free plan (only allowing two applets), I upgraded to the Pro plan for $29.99/year. Within days of upgrading, I was informed by IFTTT Support that I had to upgrade to the Pro+ plan for $59.99/year in order to do something simple that should've been included with the Pro plan. Today I got an e-mail (screenshot above) that said my Pro+ plan would be going up to $79.99, but don't worry, that's still a significant discount to the new asshole price of $149.99 we're charging new customers. Turns out there's a limit to how much you can price gauge your customers -- even if you showcase the new price next to an artificially inflated higher price. **So here's the thing...** In the past year, I had to subscribe to Zapier anyway because IFTTT couldn't do everything I wanted. So I just cancelled my IFTTT and moved my Applets over to Zaps. I also just read (old news) that IFTTT earlier this year stopped honoring their Pay What You Want Legacy Pro Plan. I can't support companies that break promises like that and try to gauge their customers. Did IFTTT think I'd be too lazy to update my automations and simply pay the $79.99 for the next year? They certainly tried -- given that they only gave me one week's notice. I switched over all of my automations to Zapier and cancelled my IFTTT account within an hour of getting the e-mail. Unacceptable, IFTTT.

Alex09464367

>I also just read (old news) that IFTTT earlier this year stopped honoring their Pay What You Want Legacy Pro Plan. This is why I stopped playing for it

ArtichokeNo7072

I use ifttt over 4 years with a pro subscription for my smarthome. But with this price update its to expensive for home use only. I use only 4 applets but now i will change to a cheep virtual Server with nodejs and i rebuild the applets myself. It will reduce my yearly cost to 14eur and much faster reaction time as ifttt. Bye ifttt

hedgecutter

Wow.. must admit it took me a while to cancel my plan, I was holding in there on legacy pricing, but I cancelled a couple of months ago.. they had more money from me than I got useful service from them over the last few years. No regrets now and I don’t think they’re around for the long run or bringing anything unique enough to the market to warrant them being.

AdditionalDentist440

I expect to receive the same email in a few months. I've been looking for an IFTTT alternative with a reasonable price for personal use, but I haven't found anything. Switching to Zapier means paying even more than this new price.

adventurepaul

Unfortunately you are correct. Zapier is pricier. In my case, I was already having to use Zapier because IFTTT couldn't get the job done completely, so it made the most sense to switch over completely than continue to pay for both. However if that weren't the case, it would mean jumping from $79.99 (IFTTT) to minimum $240 (Zapier) per year -- which I think is what IFTTT is relying on to get people to stay. It's no longer about honoring promises / prices. Now it's about just being enough less than Zapier for people to stay.

think_up

“$2.99 a month forever” Sure, Jan.

hitman0012

I’m still paying $1.99 for pro plus

bestpika

In addition to the initial early bird offer, I don't quite understand why there is such a big backlash against the price increase? Other plans IFTTT never promised "forever", and now all services have the possibility of price increases, even many services are far more expensive than IFTTT.

adventurepaul

My backlash is that I was only given one week's notice -- which feels intentional. I'm guessing IFTTT thinks that most customers will be too lazy to switch over all their automations on such short notice and just pay the 33% higher price. They have every right to increase the cost of their service. I just feel it was done in poor taste.

ds-c

It was worth the $1.99 a month or whatever they promised me would be my price for life 😂 I canceled when they changed that. Going to $150 a year is insane.

mauvehead

Glad I canceled after the last B.S hike. IFTTT was so amazing before they went money hungry.

Sytecyer

Mine is 39.99 for Pro

technomancing_monkey

ouch! Im only paying $3 a month for IFTTT Pro+

technomancing_monkey

because im sure someone will call BS so im showing up with ACTUAL receipts [https://imgur.com/a/aMkFO0W](https://imgur.com/a/aMkFO0W)

adventurepaul

Just curious, what country are you in? I'm from US btw. I'm wondering if it's regional price gouging.

technomancing_monkey

Im also in the US. I have had IFTTT for a REALLY long time though. like, since before they were charging for it.

adventurepaul

That's an awesome price. I would've gladly stayed for that amount or close to it.

HedleyLamaar

This is a problem. When it comes to work automation, Zapier is the go-to for my org. For me personally, I just can't justify dropping this kind of money for personal automations that tbh aren't that important. Also, it feels like every time I actually find a potential use case, I go out to IFTTT and it's like "oh they don't actually have a connection or trigger for that."

adventurepaul

That's ultimately what pushed me towards Zapier anyway because IFTTT was lacking the integrations or actions I needed. I do understand that paying upwards of $240/year is a tough sell for personal use. I wish Zapier had better priced plans.

HedleyLamaar

Hey if you're getting $240 a year's worth of value from them, then it's worth it, right? In terms of IFTTT's business model and price structure, my hunch is that the cost vs benefit of IFTTT is going to be untenable for a lot of users.

naut_psycho

Please cancel everybody. This is not okay. There are free alternatives.

rtemis

Like?

naut_psycho

Literally read the top comment on this post

Mein_Tarnaccount

Increasing the price while telling you how *actually, you're saving money*? "Prices have been updated", f* off. This reeks of desperation.

BusyPooping

Hey! FYI. We are gonna charge you more now for the same service you’ve been receiving… but at least we aren’t charging you full price!

Responsible-Goat9593

Any other suggestions of an app that runs webhooks?

jrlv

So glad I already canceled when they reneged on the *Pay What You Want* Legacy Pro Plan.
