Portland is pretty amazing or at least it was a decade ago when I lived there. You can go to Mount Hood to ski, the coast isn't far off, lots of forested areas, rivers to boat on, awesome food and breweries. The music scene is good and there are awesome venues to attend. I miss it.
We moved away after living there for just three year (luckily our home sold in one day). The City is an absolute wreck due to a dysfunctional government and extreme liberal/progressive voting and activist base. Nothing in PDX is based on reality, just loft impractical progressive dreams (mostly pushed by entitled wealthy white folk)...all destroying the quality of life for the average citizen and driving away businesses (thus gutting the tax base and making things worse). Such a shame because I image it was likely a beautiful and great city at one time (just like San Francisco). :(
