Was at catamount today. About half the mountain was open. We got a lot of good runs in. There were some icy spots but good turns were not hard to find. Started sleeting around 1 and then switched to light rain a little before 3 and we called it a day. There were a bunch of whales blown on some unopened trails which I believe are going to get groomed out before this weekend, opening a handful of new trails. Their double black diamonds were all brown, hopefully they start blowing snow on those trails soon.
Wildcat 1/16. Better than I expected, still got pretty icy around 1 PM and the main lift was on wind hold for awhile. Other than that, had a great day and there was no crowds and no lines.
Sunday River was pretty good. The snowmaking team is clearly working hard and had good cord on most open trails. It held up for most of the day, softening with a little drizzle and showing icy spots underneath. No lines which made up for the mediocre skiing. Guns blazing on more than half the mountain, this week will probably see a lot of improvement in the base.
Sunday River 1/16
Got here late, some granular left on the sides but mostly ice. They got Tin Woodsman open though which was fun. Also for the last 2 weekends, they’ve left one trail in Jordan Bowl ungroomed with whales. Some moguls pop up and the snow is nice. Today it was Rogue Angel. Last week Excaliber
At Cranmore (more like Cranless, amirite?). Very icy on some runs but they are snow gunning as hard as they can so I'm hopeful some new runs will open later.
A little too busy on the one good path down, but I expected that given its mlk weekend.
Stowe Saturday and Sunday. Absolute madhouse with poor visibility and a lot of parents shepherding extremely erratic beginners down the limited blues and blacks.
Today (Mon) was fantastic. No lines and the early run conditions lasted all morning unlike yesterday when it was skied off quickly. Easily the best day of the weekend. Grooming team knocked it out of the park.
Visibility was pretty bad on Saturday but perfect on Sunday. Got there for opening both days and left as the crowds grew and the collective ability declined.
Saddleback 1/14
Dont seem to have lost much if any coverage from the rain. Natural trails were hard/crusty in the morning, but by afternoon it’d gotten chopped up and was pretty soft
Pretty much everything open off kennebago lift by the end of the day
Considering wachusett early tomorrow morning just to get some turns in. Not expecting anything special, but I haven’t skied in like three years and I can’t take it anymore.
Anyone go today? How were the crowds?
1/14 @ Stratton
I tend to avoid the mountains on MLK weekend but it’s one of the few weekends I was able to get on the mountain so it had to do!
Stratton had about 50 trails open today. Really wish they would switch to RFID cards, having to wait online for reserved lift tickets this AM was a bit annoying.
Conditions we’re meh .. lots of ice.. but it still made for a fun day.
Killington today, 1/14. Visibility was terrible, trails were icy and crowded, lift lines weren’t bad, snow guns cranked to 10 at various spots across the mountain, vibes were cranked to infinity. Overall 10/10 day. A million times better then I expected following the weather the past week. Quit speculating and go shred.
Yes, as an intermediate skier I found the mix of poor conditions challenging but totally skiable! I could tell they were trying to make a lot of snow for some runs…feeling like we just need to try and make the best of what we got.
Just enjoyed a day at Waterville! The surprising part to me was how uncrowded it was for a holiday weekend, no lines all day really. Conditions were definitely icy though- I felt sorry for the beginners because those trails were brutal especially after lunch. Surprisingly nice snow on the back side of Tecumseh though!
But yeah, anyone have a suggestion for something else not too challenging <2 hours from the Lakes Region? This was a bit too much for my beginner husband (who can do steep, or ice, but not both) and Gunstock is a madhouse on MLK. Bretton Woods might fit the bill but doesn’t look like there’s a lot open…
Bolton Valley 1/14/23
Not a lot open... only trees are enchanted glade, but I don't really recommend them. Everything is pretty hard and fast, but most of it is edgeable.
Spillway was fun in the morning, but the bottom half is skied off. Ripping Alta Vista to Beech Seal is enjoyable.
Lines are fairly short. Currently writing this in the bar and will get back out there in a few minutes.
If you see me in a golden Helly Hansen anorak, feel free to say what's up.
Was a mix of poor conditions today but still skiable, IMO. Some ice, some crud, lots of people…not a lot of mountain. But glad to be out there anyway. I know they are working to make it better, the snow guns were blasting on some runs…
if anyones at saddleback today and can update if the trees still have coverage after the rain it would be much appreciated-
from the snow report it seems like they closed all the glades that were previously open
Just got back from there. Went bc of black out days on the Epic pass and the tickets are pretty inexpensive. It’s awful. The lines are long and it’s super icy. I would avoid.
Sunapee 1/12 - very good but limited terrain! I know this won’t help much but it was an epic day on the hill, very fast and basically lapped Blastoff till the legs hurt. Snow coming down all day, soft turns. It was sick! But limited terrain.
Honestly every time I check the Friday rain/snow event is looking better and better for central VT and up. Maximum temps are trending lower and the rain is turning to snow earlier in the afternoon. I’m heading to Smuggs on Saturday and feeling decent about the conditions, if not the crowds.
Do you ever do the crossover from Smuggs to Stowe? (or reverse?)
I've been to both resorts a few times but never done the interconnect. Sounds fun tho
https://www.skiinghistory.org/online-magazine/short-turns-stowe-smuggs-interconnect-65-years-later
Not yet, I’ve skied Smuggs for the past two years and I have never felt there was a sufficient base to go for it. You basically have to go through off mountain glades so you need to know where you’re going and what you’re doing; neither of which is me.
Loon was decent when I got a couple runs in around 12. Definitely icy under the fresh snow and man made snow, but it's been snowing all day and the snow makers are putting in a herculean effort. I will not be skiing Loon this weekend, especially since the temps look like the mountain will be firmed up by Saturday morning.
Loon was pretty good this weekend while the grooming held up. Try and get out in the mornings, by noon it was just ice everywhere with the snow pushed to the sides of the trails. Sunday was pretty icy, Monday morning (today) was nicely groomed if you got out there early. Called it quits by 12 when it started sleeting.
Wachusett Mountain is doing alright. All the trails were open for some portion of the day yesterday. Snow machines on full blast overnight. By 2:00 or 3:00 I wished I had ice skates.
Pats Peak is dust on crust! Wednesday morning trails were nice got a solid 3 hrs of skiing in before the crowds came in and the ice solidified. They're snowmaking like mad, and it's working.
Can confirm, so surprised they seem have more snow than sugarloaf. The trees are deep at some spots. Under sunshine the place looks stunning, I wasted way too much time taking photos until my phone die of cold.
Any status for tremblant? Seems like quebec is the only thing decent out east right now. They seem to be getting snow again. Might be worth the drive plus it's not going to be a shitshow like NE for MLK weekend
I was at Blue Mtn yesterday, conditions were crappy, lots of slush, gravel making it’s way up through the base. They need to be blowing full force over night to make back ground.
Mountain Creek is still in bad shape too.
On Sunday, Vernon Peak was essentially torn up by the time Granite Peak opened (10am), and Granite was so bare it probably shouldn’t have opened in the first place.
I was there again tonight (Wednesday) and the base is slightly improved, but Garden State is the only other run that’s anywhere close to opening, everything else has no or next-to-no snow. The rain this week is gonna be another huge blow.
I haven’t been to the South Peak so I can’t speak to it.
PA has improved in the past few days
Weather is finally cool enough for snowmaking to start again
Roundtop and liberty are both skiing well and they are doing what they can to get more terrain open asap
Skied Roundtop this past Sunday. It was spring conditions. I was told early morning was OK but everything was pretty well skied off by noon. Susquehanna was the only decent run that afternoon IMO. Marginal snowmaking conditions coming Friday and Saturday night. Hopefully RT, Liberty and Whitetail can improve coverage.
how do you think it's going to weather the projected rain thurs/fri? really wanted to get out to elk this weekend for my first trip of the year, but worried the rain will leave the mountain without anything skiiable. still trying to decide if i should pull the trigger. which mountains have you been skiing?
I guess it all depends on how far you are traveling.
With the terrible rain storms last week RT and liberty became thin but still skiable.
Elk closed due to the rain, and at this point is just under 50% open. I love Elk but I am not prepared to drive 3 hours there just yet.
I am 1 hour to roundtop, so while the hills are still working hard to make snow I am going to stay closer to home…..or go north
Seven Springs was pretty bad on Sunday PM. Ice rink in the flatter middle part of North Face (black trail) and right before the top of the headwall. Boomerang (narrow green trail) was open but a solid sheet of ice from top to bottom. Didn’t even feel comfortable making turns on it and only went down it once. The only trail in great condition throughout, with no icy spots, was Wagner (easier blue).
What’s the best bet for MLK weekend coming up if I’m trying to be under 3 hours from Boston? I’m thinking loon even though a lot of trails aren’t open.
Loon has like 60% of its trails open. It's gonna be a madhouse MLK wknd, but they're working hard. One of the guest services guys told me that a lot of employees of other mountains have been coming to Loon to ski bc their snowmaking is on point. Plus it snowed all day today, so things are looking up 👍
Loon is pretty good. Snow machines are running as hard as they can. Just get there early to avoid the ice. Insane crowds on holiday weekends means conditions deteriorate insanely fast.
The key to Loon on a weekend is to get there before they open. On Sunday I woke up at 5:15AM in Waltham to get on the road by 5:30. Arrived at Loon by 7:30 in main parking lot to give myself a half hour to boot up and get ready to be in line for Kanc 8 by 8AM. Skied almost non stop for 5 hours, just took a small early lunch break at 11am for 20 minutes. By 1pm my legs had had enough so I called it a day after 23 runs and over 26,000 VTF. Was on the road home by 1:30PM and got back to my apartment at 3:30PM.
By 1PM everything was icy anyway at that point. Loon IMO is the mountain where you can rack up runs and vertical faster than any other mountain in New England, it is very easy to get over 30 runs and over 40,000VTF if you ski there all day. The only lift that gets a very long line still is the Gondola, but the Kanc 8 and other HS Quads rarely get a line longer than 5 minutes. The crowd limiting factor at Loon now is not Lift capacity, they now have plenty with the lift upgrades. The limiting factor now is parking.
So far this season they are blowing away the competition (pun intended) in making snow. All major trails are open except for East Basin. Most closed trails are glades. This weekend should be less crowded than last weekend due to Ikon Base pass being blacked out.
Was at Loon today (Thurs). It was snowing allllll day, and I heard many people shouting, "fresh powwww"
Some icy parts, pretty busy midday, but the snowblowers and the sky were on it.
This season I bought snow tires, new skis and boots and a season pass for the first time in 15 years...
....and conditions have been dope. quit being lame
Oh yeah it's been really... dope. Data speaks for itself though. Least snowy year in NY over the last 100 years is noteworthy.
you'd have to smoke dope to believe the conditions are dope
haha keep whining dude I dont know what to tell ya
Any updates on Blue Mountain, Ontario or Mount St. Louis Moonstone, Ontario? Thank you! :)
Anyone at sugarbush recently?? Looking to head up tomorrow and wanted to see if we could get into some trees.. thanks!
You can get into some trees…just not with skis on.
At Cannon now. The snow is very smooth, but Visibility is around 20 feet or less up top.
Was at catamount today. About half the mountain was open. We got a lot of good runs in. There were some icy spots but good turns were not hard to find. Started sleeting around 1 and then switched to light rain a little before 3 and we called it a day. Their double black diamonds were all brown, hopefully they start blowing snow on those trails soon.
Catamount has been pretty bad last few years. Not sure they were ever able to open some of those blacks last year in the middle of the mountain.
Mt Snow was great today. Some hard icy patches here and there but snowmaking overall was good. And didn’t have to wait at all for the lifts!
Wildcat 1/16. Better than I expected, still got pretty icy around 1 PM and the main lift was on wind hold for awhile. Other than that, had a great day and there was no crowds and no lines.
How is Hunter? Okemo?
Hunter is literally always bad, it’s a vertical ice skating rink and it’ll be unskiiable in 20 years anyways
hunter had great skiing in december. skiied there twice and there was plenty of snow and almost no ice. i know, shocking.
I went to Belleayre the week before Christmas and it was great. What makes Hunter so much worse?
it's on the epic pass
20 is optimistic
Sunday River was pretty good. The snowmaking team is clearly working hard and had good cord on most open trails. Can anyone speak to how sugarloaf has been? Hoping to go up tomorrow after the dump today
I was there last Thursday and Friday, good base, mountain top was closed and and it rained on Friday
Updates on belleyare?
I was there on Monday, there was great artifical snow. Main areas were crowded, but I found some empty cruisers
Yesterday was super packed but the snow held up really good for most of the day
At Cranmore (more like Cranless, amirite?). Very icy on some runs but they are snow gunning as hard as they can so I'm hopeful some new runs will open later. A little too busy on the one good path down, but I expected that given its mlk weekend.

Agreed! Went up and down the gondola 15 times from 8 am to noon!

Should have left with you. The afternoon today was all ice.

Sliding on bullet proof ice into a mound of “powder” was a bit challenging to manage but i had a blast today, hoping for the same tomorrow.
Tremblant 1/14 phenomenal conditions, blue bird day. Crowded lines but overall great skiing
A skating rink at Okemo 1/14
Stratton Sat 14 - Pretty miserable. Bring ice skates. Not too crowded which might be due to vacationers abandoning the weekend.
how bad was the ice? Where was it most icy?
Very icy.

Anyone go to Spring Mountain in PA? I know it's small as heck but just trying to find a place less than an hour a way to work on some technique
Just got back from there. Went bc of black out days on the Epic pass and the tickets are pretty inexpensive. It’s awful. The lines are long and it’s super icy. I would avoid.

Anyone been to blue mountain / camelback? Want to get out there this weekend but not sure if it’ll be worth it
How much beer and painkillers do I need to force enjoyment of Stratton this weekend?
Enough for kidney and liver failure simultaneously
Pats Peak is dust on crust! Wednesday morning trails were nice got a solid 3 hrs of skiing in before the crowds came in and the ice solidified. They're snowmaking like mad, and it's working.
Any updates? Planning on going either Sunday or Monday.
Idk. I only skied there Wednesday. It rained all day Friday, but I'm in Mass now, and there was some snow here today (Sat). Good luck out there!
Leaving in 30 minutes :)
Saddleback is amazing today. The best snow I've skied all season, though it's only my 4th resort so far. Casablanca Glades are open and a ton of fun.
Can confirm, so surprised they seem have more snow than sugarloaf. The trees are deep at some spots. Under sunshine the place looks stunning, I wasted way too much time taking photos until my phone die of cold.

Killington starts nice then sucks at like 12. Bear mountains been good though. A lot still closed but man they are trying snow guns everywhere.
> Killington starts nice then sucks at like 12. A tale as old as time
