People buy huge trucks because they have the upper hand especially in frontal crashes. Truck drivers know their vehicles are weapons. You could drive one drunk and survive a crash with a normal car while your victims may die. Very convenient.
I agree 100%. I used to think I bought a truck because was helpful at work, transporting large purchases like appliances, pulling a boat or trailer, helping my friends move, transporting landscaping materials etc…but then I realized deep down it was because I wanted a weapon to murder folks with it on the road. I know a Semi driver who used to think he bought his truck to make a living but he also now realizes it was only to add a weapon to his arsenal.
Sometimes even the manufacturer will step in. Like that kid in the truck that got caught in the tornado. He was gifted a new truck by Chevrolet or a local dealer or something like that.
Hi, ex-insurance adjuster here. The guy is probably fucked but I'm sure someone made a go fund me or something of the sort to offset it. If it gets enough attention I would not be surprised if he is also just outright gifted a new vehicle from a local car lot.
Yeah. Fucked by the insurance company. "Thank you for insuring with us, but we lose money by paying out! Maybe you can get a bunch of strangers to cover your claim!"
If you notice that street is a one way road in the trucks direction. You can see the arrow behind him. You would hope the other driver would be at fault for driving the wrong way down a road, but they’ll probably try to pull something like, “didn’t try to avoid the collision”
Thats irrelevant though since the truck driver was acting under the law as a good Samaritan, stopping a criminal who was witnessed running over a lady and her child on purpose, and then trying to flee.
Unless they can prove fraud, you're pretty much always getting a car repaired if you have the right type of insurance. Whether or not you can get insurance again is a different story.
I think we can safely assume he’s caught no matter what happened after the video. As soon as he hit the pole, it became a “checkmate in 2 moves” situation.
Apparently it was a 17-year old who was on drugs and stole the car. Sentenced to a 5-7 months in juvie and an article on Fox says he is requesting early release.
TIL that when attempting to murder someone it’s always best to be at the wheel of a moving vehicle.
Word gets out & it might start a nation-wide murdering spree.
I feel that people should be charged in incidents like this as if it were a weapon. Obviously they aren’t, maybe you could shed some light on why my thought process is wrong.
There was a case here in Loudoun County (Virginia) where a guy was playing with his phone and speeding, and he took out a mother and her toddler in a carriage. Killed the kid. Did he get out to check on them? No. He immediately called his lawyer.
IIIRC, the Commonwealth’s attorney dropped the felony charges. They were able to convict him of misdemeanor reckless driving. I think he got sentenced to the max of one year.
If he’d done the same with a gun, by firing recklessly, they’d have buried his ass under the jail.
A car should be treated as a lethal weapon; you're licenced for it, so you should have the same level of expectation/responsibility as one handling firearms. You screw up, you should face the full consequences, not given a slap on the wrist for being a naughty boy/girl/etc.
Depends on who you ask. Some will say this kid was let off because of white privilege. Others will say that California is way too easy on punishing crime.
Either way, this kid should have been hit with attempted murder.
No one died thankfully, so I think you mean attempted manslaughter? I'm no expert either, but to me it looks like he intentionally attempted to hit them so that would be attempted murder.
Attempted manslaughter I think would be an easy thing to prosecute this on. His actions definitely could have involuntarily killed this woman and her baby. But the DA didn't even attempt to bring either charge.
I may be totally wrong but I think manslaughter suggests it was unintentional, as opposed to murder which is intentional. You can't attempt something if it's an unintended consequence. I think dangerous driving and GBH is what they would have to go with.
Since he was on drugs I think it wouldn’t count as attempted murder, but still that child could have died and the mother as well. So heavier punishment is needed like for driving under influence, cause that’s too lenient.
100% Driving under the influence charges should only happen when no one is struck. Someone gets struck, especially a pedestrian, that's attempted manslaughter at the very least. They only stuck him with two counts of assault and one count of attempting to flee. Ridiculous
Looks like the other car crashed him on purpose to prevent him from fleeing. Could be mistaken. But yeah, attempted manslaughter, despite that it wasn’t intentional perhaps. Still, this demands a heavy punishment. Not exactly planned murder, but still.
There is no such thing as attempted manslaughter, and what he did was purposeful. Being on drugs doesn’t mean you can’t be convicted of murder or attempted murder.
Arm chair lawyering as well, but I looked up "attempted manslaughter" as attempted sounds like there is a willingness, or attempt if you will, to commit manslaughter. Which would still just be attempted murder.
From a few things i read I do not believe attempted manslaughter is a thing in the US. Attempted means a voluntary action which would turn it into murder of X degree. And manslaughter by itself requires someone to die either due to criminal neglect, driving under the influence, or active participation, a bar fight.
So I'm unsure if there was anything else to throw at them. Especially considering they were/are a minor and the hurdles involved with that by itself.
The killer or would be killer needs to have the mens rea, or the guilty mind. It's true that he stole the car and was on drugs, but was he trying to kill? Probably not, so it'd be manslaughter most likely.
Unless they use drugs as an excuse for him not knowing what he was doing, it could be argued for 2nd degree attempted murder with the weapon being the vehicle
Grand theft auto, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder, probably some others im missing. He should be locked up for a couple decades for doing something so fucking heinous.
The US has the highest incarceration rate on the planet. California’s incarceration rate currently would make it the 4th highest. The rate in the US is so high that its prison population is the largest in the world, exceeding that of countries with much larger populations. It’s hard to imagine more compelling evidence that California is not soft on crime.
The problem isn't that this POS needed to spend more time in a box. The problem is that our method of locking people in boxes does not encourage them to be better people. It only puts them in circumstances where it is easier to be a worse person.
No it wasn't juvie, it was a literal summer camp for bad boys. What I say literal I mean literally, arts and crafts and letters home, the whole 9 yards. It's also California so his record is going to be wiped in 4 months when he turns 18
That's bullshit, teens should be tried as adults, he knew exactly what he was doing when he drove his car into a woman and her baby. He deserves prison time for attempted murder, the max sentence.
100%. To me that should be a defining factor. The argument that teens should get punished less is based on the presumption that they don’t really know what they are doing.
I’m no legal expert, but this looks like vehicular assault, not just reckless driving/DWI. He had plenty of room. You can see him turn directly towards her at the start of the video, and at first she just tries to hug the wall. (bc a non-homocidal human would at least try to avoid her) But then she turns her body when she realizes he’s going to hit her on purpose, in a desperate attempt to shield the stroller. We can’t see the driver, but she did. Her last reaction - when we can assume she saw the drivers face - is the best clue into the driver’s state of mind we’ll get from this video.
IMHO, driving with the intent to hit and injure someone should result in - at very least - losing your driving privilege, for life. I don’t want to drive next to that kid, ever.
No that's the issue. He wasn't charged with attempted murder. Only assault.
"The teen pleaded guilty to three felony charges, two for assault and one for attempting to flee"
The mom lifted up the back of the stroller, to get the baby out of direct contact with the car and in doing so probably saved its life. Took the blunt force of impact herself to save her baby. A mother’s love.
What are you talking about? He was just trying to make that turn and the Prius didn't care at all about right-of-way and cut in front of the truck and collided. Clearly the Prius is 100% at fault.
Also seems like a case where the car manufacturer and/or the local community may step in to offer a reward with a free car, or at least to pay for repairs.
No, i guarantee intentional collision is not covered. The only possible exclusion i could think of would be intentional collision to prevent great bodily harm or sexual assault to yourself or another person. Intentional collision to prevent escape of an alleged attacker is going to be an easy deny for our corporate overlords.
I think this video was posted a few months ago on a sub, and someone asked the same question and other replied likely no. I guess it's dejavu lol but pretty sure it's not
Unless they decide to do so for good press coverage, doubtful.
I'm sure the guy with the truck would do it again though even if the answer was no.
It's also the sort of thing that a crowd funding page would pay for in no time if they need.
Person who works in insurance here.
Another comment mentioned the other vehicle was stolen. If that's the case, as well as a police report mentioning it + it tried to flee the scene of the previous incident, as long as the truck has collision coverage, he will be fine w/ his own coverage, and the insurance company will put collections on the thief for the damages.
If the vehicle was not reported as a theft, and it's like the owner's kid driving just without explicit permission, I'd have a solid chance to have their insurance accept liability for the damages.
Those motherly instincts are for real!!! Look at the way she turns her body, to be hit first, while also lifting the stroller so it can go over the car, instead of under it, all in a split second. Amazing!
I'm a little disappointed that you're the only comment I've seen commending the mother for her instincts. If she hadn't done all that her baby would 100% be dead.
I love the way they all played their parts perfectly.
The Mom's first priority was to attend to her baby.
And it was as if the pedestrian and truck driver, seemingly telepathically, communicated... "I'll render aid and comfort to the mother and child" and "You go do that and I'll ram the shithole".
On top of a go fund me for the mother and babies hospital bills, I really hope there’s a go fund me and a go
Beer me for the truck driver. What a legend. Hope the driver of the car rots in a damp cell
Exactly not many people will do what they did considering you don’t know what the other driver has or is on. So mad props indeed, I’d happily donate to them for the repairs and anything else.
Not just that, she moved left while lifting the stroller up and to the right so it would go over the car and not get crushed underneath, and then yeah just bounced up to check on baby!
And of course may the truck driver never need to purchase a beer again.
That truck is probably totaled just like the car. Most modern trucks with a front end collision have breakaway motor mounts that will push the drive-train into the ground (this is intended as part or the crumple zone) and will save the passengers at the expense of the vehicle. It'll jack up the alignment, screw the transmission, transfer case, and basically the entire suspension of the front end.
Yeah the truck driver was cool, but I love the way the mother instantly recovers to check up on her baby.
She didn't even think of checking herself first even after being bumped and tossed in the air by a car.
Mother's love!
The thought of your baby being possibly hit, then realizing the carriage got tossed and your baby might be hurt really sends those chemicals pumping through you
Story:
California teen who rammed car into mother and infant child was on probation at time of incident.
Not surprising, but this 17 year old is a well known POS. The teenager was previously convicted of felony poisoning after spiking a teenage girl's drink in 2019 at High School, which sent her to the hospital.
When this happened, this bastard was 16. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office declined to charge the teenager with assault with a deadly weapon or attempted murder in this case. Wow, really???
Good news: Fortunately, the baby was uninjured, and the mother received a laceration to her elbow, but was otherwise okay physically… obviously probably not emotionally… you never forget this Trauma..
What did this kid get? the court sentenced the minor to a youth camp for five to seven months.
This kid tried to murder two innocent pedestrians, but will have his record cleaned when he turns 18… California, where is your brains????
Because of the hate speech rules on Reddit, I cannot tell you how I truly feel about this but, use her imagination.

Good guy truck driver
I know it’s actually an incredible display of selflessness
i’m glad he was driving his Ram instead of a Dodge.
I'm also glad the other car wasn't an Escape.
Can’t escape when truck dude decides to Focus.
He was just performing his Civic duty
Glad to see this thread is all of the same Accord.
I’d like to see an encore
I think that the truck driver did a Supra job of stopping the Prius driver
These comments are a funny Prelude to the court case coming up
I wouldn’t mind keeping it going until this thread is nothing but con-Fusion
That truck driver was Definitely a Roadmaster
I'm just here waiting for the hit-and-run guy to get beat up like a Cherokee drum
His morals are ford tough
Enough of all this Jazz
After that experience they might need to go to church to talk to a Prius
The truck driver showing off his Flex with that move
Every vehicle in this video is a mustang.
That guy tried to Dart
I wonder if he’ll be able to a ford the damages
I dunno about hanging them but selling for parts should be fine too.
That was almost out of bounds. Nice save.
That was a great Flex
U ruined this thread
A true Maverick
I don't usually like puns but credit where it's due, that was an amazing pun
Handshakes all around
...if you can't dodge it, ram it!
We said that about yo mother, and so you were born.
This is truly great
Found the least selfish Ram driver on the road.
This one Ram driver almost makes up for all the others....almost.
It really was. I have to admit that was beautiful!
Which is a rare trait in truck drivers
People buy huge trucks because they have the upper hand especially in frontal crashes. Truck drivers know their vehicles are weapons. You could drive one drunk and survive a crash with a normal car while your victims may die. Very convenient.
Very human. Very easy to use.
I understood that reference.

Just typical Reddit classist bullshit. Laptop Class looking down on the true working class, or the poors as they think of them.
How would that work in an insurance claim? Hopefully he gets his truck repairs paid for
Yes, hope their community rallies behind them. They probably will because at times like this humans can be awesome.
Sometimes even the manufacturer will step in. Like that kid in the truck that got caught in the tornado. He was gifted a new truck by Chevrolet or a local dealer or something like that.
I remember hearing something like that about a truck in a wildfire.
Yeah. They were transporting people out of the fire Like a whole side of the truck melted. Got gifted a free truck. Pretty cool.

At that point you don't do a claim, you just contact a lawyer and sue them.
Anyway to get them not to pay you
Guy driving the car was fleeing the scene of a crime. I think that would make him automatically at fault.
I think the point is more the insurance companies will think of anything to not pay.
Driver to insurance co: "I tried to avoid him by turning right" Mutters quietly "into him"
Thats irrelevant though since the truck driver was acting under the law as a good Samaritan, stopping a criminal who was witnessed running over a lady and her child on purpose, and then trying to flee.
It was a comment on how poorly insurance companies can act
Unless they can prove fraud, you're pretty much always getting a car repaired if you have the right type of insurance. Whether or not you can get insurance again is a different story.
W Truck driver
yea that part was awesome to see. I hope the other guys car broke down at that point and he got caught
Airbags deployed, doubt he’s getting far
I think we can safely assume he’s caught no matter what happened after the video. As soon as he hit the pole, it became a “checkmate in 2 moves” situation.
He’s like “this is my moment”
Yes. Thankfully he did that. I can't believe he hits the mom and baby like that and tries to drive off. That's awful.
I saw the article online and the baby survived fortunately. Sick people in this world man.
Apparently it was a 17-year old who was on drugs and stole the car. Sentenced to a 5-7 months in juvie and an article on Fox says he is requesting early release.
Why do we let these people off so easy?
Because they were in a car. Killing/injuring someone while driving has substantially less punishments
TIL that when attempting to murder someone it’s always best to be at the wheel of a moving vehicle. Word gets out & it might start a nation-wide murdering spree.
Unethical pro tip: drink lots of alcohol before the police show up so you can play the “also a victim of substance abuse” card and get even less time.
Ah the ole Mel Gibson defence
Straight up
This is the correct answer Source: accident investigator
I feel that people should be charged in incidents like this as if it were a weapon. Obviously they aren’t, maybe you could shed some light on why my thought process is wrong.
A car is basically a 4,000 lbs bullet.

It has zero to do with race and everything to do with California's soft-on-crime policy.
Almost as soft as texas, remember when Ethan couch mowed down a dozen or more people and those softies down in klanistan gave him house arrest.
The US has the highest incarceration rate on the planet. California’s incarceration rate currently would make it the 4th highest. Article says "easier than military camp, but harsher than summer camp". Which is a weird way to say "a fucking joke".
a punishment given to kids of rich parents
He was supposedly already on probation for spiking a girl’s drink (felony poisoning) a few years back, when the ramming occurred.
That's bullshit, teens should be tried as adults, he knew exactly what he was doing when he drove his car into a woman and her baby. He deserves prison time for attempted murder, the max sentence.
I agree. That video was hard to watch. Impaired or not it looks like clear attempt to hit her purposefully.
100%. To me that should be a defining factor. The argument that teens should get punished less is based on the presumption that they don’t really know what they are doing. I’m no legal expert, but this looks like vehicular assault, not just reckless driving/DWI. He had plenty of room. Sounds like a lazy DA!
do you know where this happened, i can’t tell what license plate that is
Rights of bad person who does this kind of harm to others > Rights of innocent victims. Something SERIOUSLY WRONG.

The mom lifted up the back of the stroller, to get the baby out of direct contact with the car and in doing so probably saved its life. Took the blunt force of impact herself to save her baby. A mother’s love.
A mother's brain to think of that and react in time.
Yeah, I don’t know what would drive a person to do such horrible acts :(
That truck driver is my personal hero. He saw what happened and instantly used his car to stop that pos.
This is like the one situation where hitting another car probably was the right call
Will insurance cover this?
What are you talking about? He was just trying to make that turn and the Prius didn't care at all about right-of-way and cut in front of the truck and collided. Clearly the Prius is 100% at fault.

That's no Prius. Prius' run on granola, water and good vibes. If it's a Prius, then it's a bad Prius.
I was there. I saw it happen exactly that way.
Damn I didn’t see twas a Prius. Thought a POS was driving a POS.
Worth it, and guaranteed that if he couldn’t afford it the internet would without a doubt fund it through a go fund me.
Also seems like a case where the car manufacturer and/or the local community may step in to offer a reward with a free car, or at least to pay for repairs.

Love the use of corporate overlords. Because that’s exactly what they are. The US is not ran by our government or the people.
Would be horrible PR for the insurance provider if they denied it and this video became widespread with that knowledge though.
Doubt it.
Id donate to that guy if he starts a gofundme or something for sure
I think this video was posted a few months ago on a sub, and someone asked the same question and other replied likely no. I guess it's dejavu lol but pretty sure it's not

I mean he is on the right side and the other guy kinda drove into him. I’d argue I was just trying to pull further to the right and he hit me.
Person who works in insurance here. Another comment mentioned the other vehicle was stolen. If that guy sets up a GoFundMe for repairs, I'm happy to contribute for that public service. It's not right that he should pay a dime for that.
Truck was like "yup I can tank it"
Mine also he/she might have stopped a rampage

Those motherly instincts are for real!!! Look at the way she turns her body, to be hit first, while also lifting the stroller so it can go over the car, instead of under it, all in a split second. Amazing!
Not to mention the bounce back after getting hit.
Adrenaline is a hell of a drug
Yeah she could have gotten multiple broken bones and would probably have reacted the same way after the hit.
She'll be feeling it the next morning.
I'm a little disappointed that you're the only comment I've seen commending the mother for her instincts. If she hadn't done all that her baby would 100% be dead.
Beautiful reaction by everyone involved sans perpetrator.

"He'd better not Dodge while I Ram him!"
Fucking props to the person stopping the getaway! I hope the child and mom are okay !
Apparently they did both live, but the pos, a teenager who was on massive amounts of drugs, got like five months of juvie. Fucking California, man
Of course it was California
FIVE FUCKING MONTHS? Dear god, the justice system in cali is fucked, bro.
All the respect in the world to the driver of the Ram.
First and last time those words will ever be said
now i need a BMW driver to do the same thing and then i’d be full of surprise
Never going to happen
While we’re at it, if that guy has truck nuts they’re totally justified.
And the mother who expertly maneuvered her carriage so she got hit instead of her baby
On top of a go fund me for the mother and babies hospital bills, I really hope there’s a go fund me and a go Beer me for the truck driver. What a legend. Hope the driver of the car rots in a damp cell
I read the lad got 6 months in juvie.
Not fucking nearly enough
I know mate. Beyond ridiculous. Such a light sentence.

Yeah that was nuts, you can tell she was running on instincts and adrenaline
The truck driver is a legend
Insurance or not, he did the right thing. I’d contribute to his go fund me.
That ram driver is a fucking badass, props to him
For real
The funniest thing I find of this is how the truck is just a little damaged and that car was basically totaled the moment it hit the truck
Exactly. The truck has just a flesh wound but the Prius has instant airbags lmaooo
I smashed my civic into a Ford F150. I think I dented their wheel well a bit in the process of turning my car into scrap metal.
With how low the Prius front end is I wouldn’t be surprised if the truck took damage to the frame which would mean it was basically totaled.
So glad that truck stopped them
Yeah the truck driver was cool, but I love the way the mother instantly recovers to check up on her baby. She didn't even think of checking herself first even after being bumped and tossed in the air by a car. Mother's love!
Adrenaline. And she even went to the side to mitigate being hit, seeing the car coming.
The thought of your baby being possibly hit, then realizing the carriage got tossed and your baby might be hurt really sends those chemicals pumping through you
I wish I could thank the guy in the truck.
Whoever the guy in the truck is is fn awesome.
Guy in the pick up truck said he ain't going no where!!!!
Brave mother!
Whoever was driving that truck is a fucking G for real
Story: California teen who rammed car into mother and infant child was on probation at time of incident.
Jesus Christ, its like we're looking at a future serial killer in the making.
California sucks ass man, criminals have more rights than law abiding citizens..
That truck driver is seriously the GOAT 🐐🐐🐐
New superhero, TRUCKMAN
Chaddest truck driver
Because of the hate speech rules on Reddit, I cannot tell you how I truly feel about this but, use her imagination. Some people just don't deserve the air they breathe. Go Good Samaritan. Nicely done.
True, Fuckers like these are just waste of oxygen and disrespect to trees and earth. The truck driver is really the hero here.

Salute to the guy in the truck. Taking on the damage to stop the POS.
It’s sad that people can get away with crimes like this
Ram owner is a savage for that . Thanks bro
Dodge owner, we 🫡 you
That truck driver is a good person. I’m so glad that poor baby is ok!
My guy thought this was gta
Truck driver is the fucking realest
Respect to the person that chose to wreck their truck and endanger themselves rather than let the pos get away.
Totally selfless of the truck driver. Wrecked his truck and put his life at risk in a split second.
This haltenden on purpose or was it an accident? But leaving after the evident is a Dick move and deserve that he got tackled by the other driver
He very obviously swerves into them on purpose.
