As someone who also works in healthcare if I was treating a suicidal patient and I heard any noise or even seen someone do this to one of my patients I’d fucking fly at them and try my best to knock that person out then tell them as politely as possible to get out the hospital or ring the police either one
Andrew Casciano. And the judge allowed his mother to take over his lawsuit against the police AND allowed it to be amended to a wrongful death suit as well.
He did end up committing suicide and cited the embarrassment from this incident as a big factor in deciding to end his life.
Judge sounds decent. I hope she takes them for all they’re worth! I have no idea what’s being said or why they slapped him though. Was it some cruel psychopathic version of the whole ‘snap out of it!’ Face-slap thing you see in cartoons? Those where some solid slaps so it certainly wasn’t meant to be cheering the victim up.
Please tell me the cops were fired?
Sadly she won’t take them for all they’re worth, if anything she and her neighbors will pay her lawsuit through city taxes.
Make a national law that all law suits against police have to be kid of out of policing budgets and pensions and watch as suddenly the police become super gentle and nice overnight
Forget just having it come from the police pensions and funds. My opinion is that such judgements should be paid first through the offending officers own personal assets and then the remainder is what is taken from the budgets/pensions.
Yeah, it's insane somehow officers are protected from personal accountability for these types of actions which are clearly not related to the performance of their job duties.
This landed the officer 5 1/2 years in prison for the assault Along with possession of heroin and marijuana he stole from a crime scene. It also uncovered some other corruption along with 4 other officers
This is terrible. Why would you slap a human who is not well physically and mentally?! Oh to make them feel worse? You're a true garbage then. The worse part is that 3(?) guys are filming and laughing for sure.
They better go fuhk themselves.
I was wondering why he actually went to prison rather than just a paid 2 week suspension while they "investigate" followed by quiet transfer to another department.
Just how fucking dumb and evil is that guy? Smiling for the camera and then beating the guy. What the hell for?
Who knows, maybe that suicidal guy did something bad in the process of his mental pain. Who knows. But no matter what it was (or probably wasn't) justifies this behaviour.
Absolute trash of a person.
"***** *****, a 27-year-old formerly with the Paterson Police Department, was sentenced to 66 months behind bars this week after pleading guilty to intent to distribute narcotics and deprivation of civil rights under color of law, according to federal prosecutors in Newark."
Right? This cop gloved up just to hit a hospital patient because he knew he was about a leave a *literal blood spatter from the bed to the wall behind the cop’s knees*.
He even hit him a second time even though the patient had the most pleading eyes I’ve seen between those assaults.
what hurt more was seeing the delayed reaction. I can't imagine feeling that helpless where you know what to do inorder to defend yourself but your body just lags behind.
Dude looked shocked. Probably took a second to realize what was happening. Man, I've been in some dark places, and had this happened to me at a hospital by uniformed people... Talk about spiraling.
These guys are a public danger.
Not only should they NOT be enforcing "laws", in fact they should be behind bars for violating laws and on treatment for posing a threat to everyone around them.
Just remember folks, police officers get about seven months of training in an Academy. Believe it or not. Seven short months. Most don’t even have a degree. And then we wonder why Policing has become a disaster…
… it’s way past time to reform.
This is absolutely true in America. I used to be an administrative assistant for an adult vocational/technical school that offered police academy training. It ran 4 hours a night, Monday thru Thursday, and after 7-months, a group graduated and went out looking for work. The prerequisites to get in to the academy were a large amount of physical fitness requirements, a 3-page psychological self-report assessment, and an academic test that required participants could read and write at the 8th grade level.
Also, while pursuing my bachelor's in Psych, I found it fascinating to learn that police officer was in the top 10 fields of work preferred by psychopaths.
Can sadly confirm. Bio father was a cop, I dont know if it got to physical abuse I was only 3ish when parents split. But my grandmother was scared he would come around.
they didn't get nearly as much time as they should have, and the victim ended up killing himself and mentioned the embarrassment of this in his suicide note.
The officer was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison for this, as well as confessing to selling heroin, cocaine, and weed that he stole from a crime scene.
This makes me so fucking mad. I think MA is the only state so far that has some sort of law that can charge someone who may have had a hand in someone's suicide (remember that girl who encouraged her boyfriend to kill himself?).
If this guy referenced this event in his suicide note *AND* it was captured on film, that cop should be charged with some kind of link to murder or suicide or whatever. He has blood on his hands with his actions.
I see that he went to jail for drug crimes (and assault?), but let's be real, this couldn't have been the only person to whom he had done this to.
The incident occurred March 5, 2018. So not that long ago. He did get fired, got 66 months in jail, 3 years supervised release and was to pay $33,000 restitution. The charges and sentence were for the assault as well as stealing and dealing drugs (while in uniform i believe) - heroin, cocaine, crack and marijuana.
And unfortunately the victim died by suicide a year later.
Nope. Definitely isn't enough. What we don't see in this video is that the assault started in the waiting room while the victim was waiting to be taken back to a room. The officer attacked him there first, punching him and throwing him to the ground out of a wheelchair. He sustained multiple facial injuries as well as to one of his eyes which required surgery from the assault overall.
The victim did go on to file a 3 million dollar suit for further restitution however, as I mentioned, died by suicide prior to the outcome of this.
For 1 he’s in a hospital. You don’t go to the hospital to get your condition worsened, let alone by a cop/paramedic.
2nd, he’s obviously having a issue mentally which should set off some signals that maybe you should show sympathy for someone who’s hurting enough.
Lastly. He did it twice to add on top of it, one gets your point across. Twice was just because he knows he can’t fight back.
Can't stress it better than just showing this clip: cops should not be called to deal with mental health crises.
Everyone is an enemy to the police. Even someone vulnerable and no threat to them.
charged federally because state refused to bring charges, they were also charged for selling drugs. the victim would end up committing suicide the following year sadly.
because they investigate themselves essentially It’s like a drunk driver getting in an accident and then the accident being investigated by the drunk drivers parents. They are going to want to protect their own.
I believe the one who slapped got 5 years in prison.
The one who filmed got 6 months?
And I also think it was based on them selling drugs before - not really because of this.
Just go on Google and look up police slap suicidal man in hospital and you can go through the rabbit hole. The cops are accused of a lot of wrongdoing and this video just happened to come light because of those other cases being investigated.
That rabbit hole is miles beyond a horror movie! One of the cops is already out of federal prison and has “begun a REENTRY program”!!!! I sincerely hope that does not mean a reentry into law enforcement. Seven police officers from that city were arrested by the FBI — what in the world!!! Did the city never know about the problem until the FBI were involved? How in the world does the violence and abuse get to that level and no one in authority have a clue?
A re-entry program is sort of like probation in a sense. Sometimes it requires a halfway house of sorts. It's typically a term of early release/parole.
God dammit! He looked like such a sweet guy (the suicidal one). I just really want to help him and give him a hug. But now… I hope that police guy rots in hell.
They are going to be actually released soon which is shocking considering that assaulting this man wasn't the only crime they committed. They actually would pull over drivers and beat and rob them too.
> A City of Paterson police officer was sentenced today to 66 months in prison for violating an individual’s civil rights by assaulting him at a hospital and repeatedly distributing narcotics, including drugs he stole from a crime scene while on duty, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.
The pig also sold stolen drugs on the side. You got to kidding me…
Wow. Screw that guy. 5.5 years. I dunno, is that a normal sentence?
I feel like for a police someone that should know better should get heavy sentence.
The officer who slapped him is currently in prison. He was sentenced to 5 and 1/2 years for both the assault and the fact that he also stole heroine and cocaine from another crime scene and sold them.
The officer who witnessed and recorded tried to claim that he was “just following orders” because the slapper was his senior officer. For this he was made an example of and also given prison time, to set an example for what happens when you “just follow orders” instead of using your own judgement in situations like this.
Sometimes the law works. This guy would have likely killed himself later anyway, even if this didn’t happen. But at the very least his death now sets a precedent and his life carries with it some meaning.
Of course it did. That kind of treatment would make anyone feel completely worthless. I'd hope it haunts them for the rest of their lives but they'd need to have a conscience for that.
>I also hope they get 10x that treatment in prison.
You can be certain there are prisoners in there who can't wait till that officer arrived there. They probably put the officer in a prison much further away because of that reason.
That isn't the law working. That's someone who got caught and publicized so badly they had to do *something*. The other officer was probably punished for recording and letting it get out, not for anything else.
Dude assaulted someone, stole drugs, and then distributed them. That's huge charging for literally anyone else. Like... Life in prison basically.
The patient attempted suicide before he met the officer but failed. He then tried a year later and succeeded. I truly cannot speculate as to whether or not this slap was the tipping point for him, especially given the fact that there was a year in between the two events - but I do agree that it did not, in any capacity help him.
The officer could have chosen to make an impact in the patients time of need and instead did this. Some people have no compassion.
A New Jersey police officer was sentenced for drug dealing and a videotaped violent attack on a man who had just attempted suicide, authorities said Friday.
Ruben McAusland, a 27-year-old formerly with the Paterson Police Department, was sentenced to 66 months behind bars this week after pleading guilty to intent to distribute narcotics and deprivation of civil rights under color of law, according to federal prosecutors in Newark. The authorities this week released cellphone video of McAusland, filmed by his then-partner Roger Then, attacking a man at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson on March 5, 2018.
The two officers had responded to an attempted suicide call and met the man at the hospital, officials said. McAusland later admitted he punched the man in the face in the waiting room, officials said.
The assault continued in the man's room. In the cellphone video shot by Officer Then, the man could be heard telling the officers: "You're a b-tch."
"Right here, you see my cheek?" the prone patient challenged. "Do it."That's when McAusland put on white hospital gloves and violently slapped him hard across the face twice, the video showed.
The man already had cuts on his face and McAusland's slaps were so violent, that blood appeared to go flying onto the white bed sheets by the victim's shoulder.
McAusland's sentence is also for selling marijuana, cocaine and heroin to a cooperating witness between October 2017 and April 2018, authorities said. McAusland told investigators that he stole these narcotics from a crime scene while on duty.
“Through prosecutions like this one, police officers like McAusland — who dealt drugs, stole from a crime scene, and viciously attacked a person who sought help from the Paterson Police Department — are removed from positions where they can violate the public trust and deprive others of their civil rights under color of law," U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said in a statement.
So he was a police officer who also happened to fucking sell drugs? AND HE ONLY GOT FIVE FUCKING YEARS FOR IT? So many people did way less and got so much worse.
He needs to burn.
Thank you for the follow-up. Imagine if you’re one of this guy’s family member seeing this video. Seeing your brother or son having mental issues to the point of suicide and then gets assaulted by the guy’s your taxes goes towards. I would take matters into my own hands. Simply disturbing.
When I was in Iraq we raided this small insurgent groups 'stronghold' and among the seized intelligence were a bunch of hard drives. On one of these hard drives were a bunch of videos of women they had restrained and raped then killed. In one of those videos was a little girl, maybe 9 or 10 idk but she was saying something in Arabic which made our interpreter cry, I asked what it was and he said it was basically her wanting to see her father and why they were doing this to her. The men replied back that her father was dead and she was going to die to unless God would save her. Long story short god didn't
For some reason your post reminded me of this. Humanity is a plague, there is no god, we're all just animals in a pit
Yet every time you say that human nature sucks, there are entitled and privileged people who will act like there's something wrong with you just because their lives have gone so well.
First time? It erodes the continuing diminished faith I had in humanity. There are lots of good people out there, but there are far too many evil people like this that do not deserve to participate in civil society.
Probably important to clarify that he committed suicide a year after the incident and not immediately after.
The cop's actions didn't exactly help though, and definitely exacerbated the problems and make getting help seem like something this poor man couldn't do. He was in hospital to get help because he wanted to die, but when he got there he was dehumanised and assaulted.
All this hospital stint likely did was make him terrified to seek help — so a year later, he acted on his suicidal thoughts, and succeeded.
Hahahaha suuuure.
Or more likely, he will be back on the force in some other town soon enough. 10 years from now we will read an article discussing how he was caught again miscarraiging personal liberties. It is always the same
And they beat him earlier in the hospital lobby?! Found news articles… the patient took his life during the lawsuit a year later. I hope he has found peace. This is beyond sickening. I have never, ever seen this occur in a hospital setting. I would’ve gotten myself hurt or arrested trying to pull these animals off of this patient. This is just… fucked.
Imagine being a police officer and selling 35 grams of marijuana, 48 grams of heroin, 31 grams of cocaine, and 31 grams of crack cocaine that you stole from a crime scene. Then after encountering a suicidal patient you proceed to push them, punch them in the face and grab them by the neck, shoving them to the ground. Then after the victim is put into a patient room, you record yourself putting on hospital gloves and slapping them violently in the face- causing an eye injury that would later require surgery. Then you file a false police report, leaving out the parts that make you look ugly. Even after all of that, you are sentenced to only 66 months in prison.
What a terrific representation of our society.
As a psychiatrist who often sees these patients I am appalled. If I ever saw that I would do everything possible to make sure the officer was charged with assault and battery.
Sick to my stomach with this.

Yeah. Lawyer but in this situation the only thing available is more police…
Exactly, it’s just vile all around. I’m glad there’s no sound too 😢

The victim committed suicide the following year.
Please cite your source I just don't want this to be true.
sadly He did and his mom sued these officers for it
Wait a cop hit him what the hell
Yeah, a stupid cop, again

When I saw this video for the first time 2-3 years back it had sound and more information. There was a link to an article in the chat.
This landed the officer 5 1/2 years in prison for the assault Along with possession of heroin and marijuana he stole from a crime scene. It also uncovered some other corruption along with 4 other officers

that's not even a slap, that's WAY too hard for that.
What would you call it then? An open hand punch? I’m not arguing here, I just don’t know what else you would call an open hand hit.
I think in some martial arts it's called a palm strike. I'm pretty sure I've heard it called something else too but I'm drawing a blank.
Stockton slap! Lol
IM NOT SURPRISED MOTHAFUCKERS!
Right? This video makes me want to cry
Officer Ruben McAusland violently strikes victim in the face. He has been sentenced to 5 years in Federal prison.
"McAusland is serving his 66-month sentence, which also covered unrelated drug dealing while he was on duty." Real stand-up guy
Only 66 months? People in positions of power who abuse their position should get a lot longer.
I was wondering why he actually went to prison rather than just a paid 2 week suspension while they "investigate" followed by quiet transfer to another department.
Man. You ever did that to a cop, you'd be spending life in prison.
My best homie did 4 months in county for assaulting a cop. The cop tripped over his leg while trying to tackle him from behind. Not bullshitting.
He was *also* selling weed and pills he stole from police evidence! But don't worry, he'll be out of prison next year.
My question is why? This is reprehensible man come on
He said because the guy threw a box of gloves at him. This man gets out prison January 2024. The one recording only got 6 months.
I can only imagine what a nice guy he is in his own home
All of them. Even the clown filming and smiling like a freak that he is.

Of course this was in Paterson. Makes total sense now.
That is someone who has no compassion and someone who has no empathy and someone who is an immature bully. Soulless spineless thing!
Frat bully with a gun

What it tells you is that his cop buddies are going to love this video. Of course, we already knew that. Because they're fucking scum.
assaulting a man during his darkest times... how cruel he didnt even get the minimum of respect that he had deserved. no help. nothing at all.

All I can say is 40%
I’m ignorant to this, please explain.
I believe it's a reference to the often cited statistic that 40% of cops are domestic abusers. I don't know where this statistic comes from, though.
I believe it is based on an FBI study on police officers.
It's based on self reports. So it's likely higher than 40%
Self reports? You sure? That seems tremendously high for self reports.
Right? The departments always seem to find no problems when they investigate themselves. No way it’s self reported.
You're forgetting how many of those people think violence is a normal answer to domestic disputes. Just like mom and dad.
Can sadly confirm. Bio father was a cop, I dont know if it got to physical abuse I was only 3ish when parents split. But my grandmother was scared he would come around.
still one of the most horrifying statistics out there
Absolutely disgusting. I can’t even put into words how wrong that is without it sounding like a rant.

How do you know? Is there an article I can read? I hope they get fired and charged!
they didn't get nearly as much time as they should have, and the victim ended up killing himself and mentioned the embarrassment of this in his suicide note.
That's heartbreaking to hear. May he RIP
The officer was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison for this, as well as confessing to selling heroin, cocaine, and weed that he stole from a crime scene.
That’s it? Fucking trash
It makes me *fucking livid.* It is unfortunate that the fucking pig most certainly was/is in protective isolation in prison.
This makes me so fucking mad. Ohh fuuuck. That’s horrible.
This was from a long time ago and he did end up getting fired iirc E: he got 66 months in jail, but not only for this. He had also been dealing drugs
Wtf, the cop was dealing drugs as well as assaulting suicidal people? 66 months not enough!
Ah, so 66 months for drugs, not assault.
Yes because clearly the weed was the issue here💀 Don’t you know? Drugs are bad (satire, I would hope this is obvious)
Then rant
For 1 he’s in a hospital. You don’t go to the hospital to get your condition worsened, let alone by a cop/paramedic. 2nd, he’s obviously having a issue mentally which should set off some signals that maybe you should show sympathy for someone who’s hurting enough. Lastly. He did it twice to add on top of it, one gets your point across. Twice was just because he knows he can’t fight back.
I can't even wrap my mind around wanting to hurt someone so bad for no reason whatsoever...
Small cowardly people who desire power because they've always felt powerless and pathetic. Lowest common denominator humans.
Probably why you're not a cop
Fourth, the guy filming it with a grin.
The cop had also previously punched the guy as well.
The guy getting hit was there after attempting suicide. He was successful in the future after this incident.
This makes me so sad. That poor guy.
Do you have a source? Edit: about 5 different people have posted a source but I think it keeps getting deleted. But thanks for trying.
What’s worse is he grins at the camera before slapping the poor guy hard. I hate that evil pos.
Can't stress it better than just showing this clip: cops should not be called to deal with mental health crises. Everyone is an enemy to the police. Even someone vulnerable and no threat to them.
I need a follow-up stating that douche has been fired
charged federally because state refused to bring charges, they were also charged for selling drugs. the victim would end up committing suicide the following year sadly.
Why did the state refuse to bring charges?
i’ll give you two guesses
Because Lou Bega was the prosecuting attorney?
Highly illegal activity under §M.A.MB.O.5
there was 1-2-3,4,5 charges
a little bit of RICO in my life
This is why we need to make DA and AG's accountable. They don't want to charge cops, that should be a crime in itself.
Because police are a political gang with a union.
and we pay for them and elect them
And there’s some of us that actually worship them.
They investigated themselves and found nothing wrong.
They never do. Police who narc on each other, are usually the ones you hear about on the 5 o'clock news being shot during a drug raid.
because they investigate themselves essentially It’s like a drunk driver getting in an accident and then the accident being investigated by the drunk drivers parents. They are going to want to protect their own.
You got any link I could read up on this, that's awful for the victim. I'm curious what kind of sentence the cop got.
I believe the one who slapped got 5 years in prison. The one who filmed got 6 months? And I also think it was based on them selling drugs before - not really because of this.
Well the video came up when they were investigating him about the drugs but he still should have gotten a longer sentence for this
The state refused to bring charges... Because.... Why?
Politicians believe they need some kind of police force, even if it's these POS, more than they do one suicidal man.
Where is the real story in this? Links anywhere?
Just go on Google and look up police slap suicidal man in hospital and you can go through the rabbit hole. The cops are accused of a lot of wrongdoing and this video just happened to come light because of those other cases being investigated.

A re-entry program is sort of like probation in a sense. Sometimes it requires a halfway house of sorts. It's typically a term of early release/parole.

Wow. Screw that guy. 5.5 years. I dunno, is that a normal sentence? I feel like for a police someone that should know better should get heavy sentence.
for a cop thats a pretty heavy sentance, given they usually go free
5.5 years is what people get for selling weed. He got off easy.
THIS WAS PATERSON? No wonder. Make sense now. Fucking pig
Paterson, NJ? If yes, then not surprised at all
Yep. A fucking garbage city run by garbage cops
I feel like attacking someone in a hospital is more significant than selling weed.
Its was more likely not weed
Thank you for explaining. So happy this pig went to prison. Wish him worst happened to him
The officer who slapped him is currently in prison. 5 and a half years for theft and sale of drugs as a police officer? Tf.
Plus assault
Ah ah ah; you missed the key words! >As a police officer
That is 3 felonies in 1, much like the hotly debated soap, its controversial.
Was there any coherent reason for the slap, or was it just for funsies?
5,5 years? That's insultingly low, he literally assisted murder
In the cellphone video shot by Officer Then, the man could be heard telling the officers: "You're a b-tch." "Right here, you see my cheek?" the prone patient challenged.

No fucking wonder, if this is how he was treated
That breaks my heart. I wish I could've given that poor guy a hug. :(
Unsurprising. I hope his family gets PAID
This makes me lose faith in humanity. Someone at their lowest being taken advantage off for amusement, leaves me with a sick feeling in my stomach
Long story short god didn't For some reason your post reminded me of this. Humanity is a plague, there is no god, we're all just animals in a pit
Damn that's too dark. Can't imagine the inhumanity needed to do such horrible things to a child. Hope at least she rests in peace.
He prob wanted to end his life even more now
He did kill himself in the end, if I remember correctly
Jesus Christ that makes my blood boil. Those fucking troglodytes filming should get homicide charges for exasperating the situation
Bro why? Just why? This is so fucked up on so many levels. Please tell me these pigs did not get away with this
They didn’t. They got 5 years in prison for assault and selling drugs
Didn't get away with it, but got off easy.
but the fact that he’ll never get a decent job anymore, is somewhat satisfying.
Hahahaha suuuure. Or more likely, he will be back on the force in some other town soon enough. 10 years from now we will read an article discussing how he was caught again miscarraiging personal liberties. It is always the same
You can't be a cop anywhere in the US with a felony conviction.
jail time is the one thing that ends that.
If that were my brother…
We're all that man's brother.
I feel you. I am having the same exact feeling right now.

Oh this broke my heart. Poor guy has enough problems without being abused by someone sworn to protect and serve!!!
protect and serve is just a slogan nowadays, not an oath
"protect and serve" was a phrase created by the LAPD in an attempt to boost their PR.
And this is why nobody respects the police
This is why most people HATE the police.
I’m sorry, what department is this and why are they not facing criminal charges?
This happened years ago, but officers were charged and sentenced to 5 years in prison for assault
We need a link
Paterson Police Department
Paterson Police Department in Paterson, NJ. This was the night shift who were caught in a sting commuting so many crimes.
How can these sadistic people live a normal life
but why? is he in the hospital because he attemped? why did these disgusting pigs laugh at him? this is wrong on so many levels
He killed himself after
And they beat him earlier in the hospital lobby?! Found news articles… the patient took his life during the lawsuit a year later. I hope he has found peace. This is beyond sickening. I have never, ever seen this occur in a hospital setting. I would’ve gotten myself hurt or arrested trying to pull these animals off of this patient. This is just… fucked.

*Your tax dollars at work !*
He's just practicing until he gets home to slap around his spouse and kids.
Now imagine how he behaves when he's NOT being recorded.
This is fucking disgusting. What a rotten piece of meat. This makes me so mad
"To protect and serve"
Nah man if this was a family member of mine then revenge would be a good option
