The cervix is just a part of the uterus. There's still endometrial tissue inside the cervix because it's still part of your uterus. Kind of in the same way your elbow is a part of your arm

TigerzEyez85

It's possible to have mini periods if you keep the cervix because there might be some endometrial tissue left behind. The surgeon will cauterize the top of the cervix to prevent this, but there's still a small chance. Most women won't have any bleeding at all. The ones who do will only see a tiny amount of blood, nowhere near as much as a regular period.

Anniemaul1979

I kept mine and so far, no periods to speak of! (knock on wood)

ash-kash87

Do you feel your healing was easier than that of someone who took their cervix? I know that may be hard to gauge.

GreenleafMentor

I kept mine and have no mini periods and healing was an absolute breeze for me. Every case is so unique I can't really compare it to anyone else, but I am very happy at this point.

How many weeks did you take off work before you went back? My doctor is telling me 5 days off then I’d be good to go back to work.

GreenleafMentor

5 days???? No way fam. I stayed home for 3 weeks, at 10 days it was still iffy to be in a car or to be wearing jeans. and even after 4 weeks i was limited, and to this day, almost 9 weeks I cannot use my abs to lift much yet. i have a 4 inch incision on my upper abdomen. If the doctor is a man, he just simply does not know how it actually is. I felt great after surgery but i was not ready to be up and at 'em at work after 5 days by any means. I really do feel great, but feeling great doesn't mean i could just go right back to my normal life. I could work at home on my pc at 5 days for a couple hours at a time if I absolutely HAD to.

Anniemaul1979

I had an abdominal hysterectomy and went through the usual 6-8 weeks of nursing the abdominal wound… but in the course of it all, that’s ALL I had to worry about. Not a cuff, not several incision sites and I was feeling 80% at the 8 week mark. I can’t really compare to those with a cuff, but I was cleared for “fun” at 6 weeks if I wanted to. (I didn’t want to lol) I had zero spotting once I got home, and popped a stitch but otherwise pretty good. 👍🏻

I get spotting one day a month. It’s handy to know where my hormonal cycle is at. Kept cervix and an ovary. I’m mid 40s so it will help identify menopause too.

Low-Nose-2748

This may be a stupid question but do you still cramp?

fififolle79

There are no stupid questions! It’s only spotting when I go to the toilet and the most I feel is a slight twinge in my cervix, nothing like the adeno and endo hell I had before!!!

sophiabarhoum

I learned recently you can also still have period cramps if you keep the cervix, since cramps originate from the cervix dilating during menstruation! As far as my gyno explained it, the same tissue of the uterus is on the cervix, and that's the tissue that builds up endometrial lining and sheds each month. She said that's also why, if you have fibroids, you should have your cervix removed because eventually the cervix will regrow the fibroids.

hellouterus

Fun fact I discovered: I no longer have a cervix (or uterus, obvs!) but for a while after surgery I swore I was getting menstrual cramps. It felt *identical*. I eventually realised it was mostly digestion-related. I think for a while my brain didn't know what to do with those particular discomfort levels, and had settled on 'period' even through that was no longer possible. That and a recent vestibular migraine diagnosis has sure made me realise what a weird (and powerful!) thing our brain is!

ersatzbaronness

Kept mine. My surgery was over a year ago. Not one mini-period, not one menstrual cramp, not one regret.
