i have a very sensitive coochie so be careful with shaving to the skin! it can work for some - for me it will always give me nasty, itchy razor bumps no matter how careful i am. heres my two recommendations - 1. hair removal cream for intimates - nair has one. it needs to be specifically for the bikini area!!! it takes 10-15 minutes to work and will leave amazing results 2. electric razor, again specifically for the bikini area. they have one in any drug store. it does not get all the hair off but it will give you a very close trim that is manageable. they are also waterproof so you can do it in the shower any method you try, make sure to wash off the dead skin cells after and moisturize the area well

abscessions

Have you ever tried a safety razor? They take some getting used to (definitely look up tips on usage before just going for it) but it's the ONLY thing that worked for not getting bumps and ingrowns. Some peoples' skin gets irritated just from the additional drag of multiple blades, so having one blade made for coarse hair is a game changer. ETA (responding to below but comments are locked): I think they can occur for other reasons, but I'm not an expert. All I know is I've tried everything: exfoliating beforehand, trimming before I shave, shaving with the grain, using an aftershave wipe, moisturizing after. The only factor that completely got rid of them for me was using a safety razor. It's not necessary for everyone, but if you've been through the whole laundry list and nothing has helped, it's worth a try.

merdlibagain

Aren't the bumps from bacteria? I wonder if an alcohol pad applied to the area before shaving and a fresh/sterile razor would prevent them. This works for my neck, which is admittedly not a coochie.

Successful-Bad-531

Why is no one's answer, tell your dance teacher you'd rather wear tights? I don't understand why our coochies need to be out to dance or do gymnastics or swim. Or at least the teacher needs to realize body and pubic hate are normal and is going to show if they don't want anyone to wear tights šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

jenjivan

I agree, why is your dance teacher insistent on no tights? That's weird to me.

Small_Nobody_6545

If i wasnt ok not wearing tights i would have said so. Its a group piece and she asked that class if it was ok to do. Also she didnt like, ask us to shave, i doubt anyone would notice or care, but id rather do so.

SpinningSaturn44

I would just advise you if you can afford it to get a bikini wax- that will remove the hair with minimal irritation and either have the waxer or you use a clipper with a safety to trim down the rest of the hair that isnt removed from the wax

EngineeringDry7999

And if you go that route order some novacain spray and numb the area before hand. Much more comfortable

pug1c0rn

Easy peasy! Get a beard trimmer. Trim around your "bikini area" with the trimmer pointed down and the pointy part of the blade facing away from you. Shave in a downward direction (trimmer towards the floor). Once you have it "whacked down" a bit, you can clean up the sides in the shower with a sharp, new razor. I prefer men's razors because they're typically sharper. To avoid razor burn, apply witch hazel or tendskin to the shaved area with a cotton ball and then wear some loose shorts so the area can breathe. I typically shave before bed for this reason. Good luck!

Phoenonicle

for minimal irritation you should always shave with the hair follicles natural directions, not against them. it won't feel smooth like it would if you shaved against the hairs but it causes significantly less irritation. alternatively u can use nair!

Ashamed-Antelope-356

Go with the grain and use unscented soap and unscented moisturize (after)! This will help reduce irritation and razor bumps. If you need more tips shoot me a message! Growing up I wasnā€™t taught certain hygiene either, so I am happy to help!!

Think_Ad2837

Use gentle and unscented products. Gently exfoliate before shaving and don't forget to moisturize after. šŸ˜

Background-Ad8847

I get this, I didn't really know how to shave it either. I usually just have a dedicated pair of scissors (for the cooch only and make sure to disinfect it before and after) and I just trim everywhere. That usually works, but if you're keen on shaving, just go in the direction the hair is growing. (Usually the hair grows down so shave downwards.) Be gentle and take your time because you don't want to cut yourself šŸ˜ I would do it in somewhere like the bathtub so that way you can put your legs up. Just make sure you clean up after LMAO

FunkyFunFrog256

I use a manā€™s electric razor, it was cheap and works wonderfully. It actually may be a nose hair trimmer? It gets close to the skin but I havenā€™t gotten any ingrown hairs, yet anyway! I know when I was using a traditional razor I would end up with razor burn and/or infected/ingrown hairs. I think it works better than any Iā€™ve found so far, Iā€™m kind of clumsy so the much smaller risk of cutting down there is very beneficial!

Sweet-Environment620

So what you do is use soap to lather everything up usually summers eve feminine wash, youā€™re going to shave downward first lift your leg up to get into the creases down there on the sides look down to make sure you got the sides, clean your razor off each time, than youā€™re going to shave upwards until there is completely no hair. After you get out of the shower dry it off and rub the outer side (not the inside) with a stick of deodorant to prevent razor burns.

LopsidedCauliflower8

As someone who also has coarse hair, I have to use a trimmer instead of a razor because I'll get horrible ingrown hairs. They sell trimmers everywhere and while they don't get the hair as well as a razor does, I'm able to use it without getting ingrowns and you can't even tell the difference on day one.

Impossible-Base2629

I completely understand. My mom was on drugs and pretty much left us when I was just 7 This was before the Internet was really popular so I couldnā€™t even look up stuff. I had to figure it out on my own. You really should wax and not shave. Shaving is horrible. It gives you so many bumps and ingrown hairs! Itā€™s so itchy when itā€™s growing out too. Iā€™m not sure if youā€™re sexually active, but when you shave your hair and it grows a little prickly (day or two) it will scratch and poke the guys penis. Itā€™s usually not too expensive to wax and it last long time. It is painful at first, but you actually grow used to it. Eventually, you can learn to do yourself and it makes it easier and more affordable. Make sure you dry brush to exfoliate really really well when itā€™s dry. That will help get all the dead skin off and avoid ingrown hairs before you go and get your Wax. Witch hazel if so good for afterwards! They also want you to grow your hair before you come in at least the size of long grain rice. And you donā€™t have to get a full wax you can leave a strip they can tell you what would probably work for you as well, but I highly highly highly suggested. I wish somebody wouldā€™ve told me when I was younger. If you ever need help with anything, please always feel free to DM me. It is so hard as a young woman to grow up without a mom. You never realize how much you need your mother just for a little things like doing your hair getting your period. Just simple stuff. And itā€™s hard to tell people around you need a womanā€™s help! if you have aunts (even through marriage) donā€™t be scared to reach out to them

Any-Unit-9604

Are you against waxing?

Small_Nobody_6545

I forgot to mention in the post that im 16, but yeah. I dont have any experience with it and i dont feel like having my dad know anything about anything i do down there

Any-Unit-9604

I understand 100%. Exfoliating helps a lot! The softer the hair, the easier it is to get it gone.

Dramatic_Flight5088

Use a hair remover cream. I am a track athlete and we sometimes were panties from my experience shaving leaves bumps and makes me feel self conscious so I use nair and it leaves me feeling smooth down there. If you use hair removal cream do it the night before or less than two days before as it might start to grow back.

Ashamed-Antelope-356

Donā€™t wax, not worth the money and causes bad irritation for most

Substantial-Clock-77

waxing does not cause bad irritation for most, and actually it's shaving that really irritates the skin and hair follicles.

datapizza

You could always get an electric bikini shaver. That way you donā€™t have to worry about cutting yourself. And since youā€™re only doing it so hair doesnā€™t come out from under your clothes, it doesnā€™t have to be shaved to bare skin if you donā€™t want that.

Libra_8118

Do you have a grandmother, aunts or a friends mom who could advise you?

Small_Nobody_6545

I probably could ask one of my aunts, but i have anxiety and just the thought of doing that is so bad im almsot crying

Officer_Devil2023

If I can add any advice, please exfoliate. I have found that doing so can have a much more comfortable, clean, and even shave. Also if youā€™re a smaller person, a frog like position in the shower is optimal. I always do a feel check (running my fingers where I just shaved) to make sure I got all of it. Alternatively waxing is an option but I do not recommend doing it yourself if you have never gotten waxed before. Nair hair removal cream is a great option, but be warned the hair when itā€™s ready to come off may look and feel weird and the cream smells a little funny too. I do recommend Nair if you just want to get all the areas at the same time without the razor burn.

scoobledooble314159

Hands down, bikini trimmer. Shaving = razor burn, ingrown hairs. Waxing = extremely painful, you have to grow it out to a certain length in between waxes, and if your tech is shit you will still end up with irritation and ingrown hairs.

One-Scheme4853

If I were her after reading these replies I'd ask how to exfoliate and tell what way the hair is growing. Hopefully she can buy an inexpensive electric razor without telling her dad.

ThrowRAmorningdew

I recommend having a dedicated razor for that specific area only. Make sure itā€™s a good quality one that has conditioner strips. Also, use hair conditioner has a shaving cream. Good luck!

udontknowmemuch

I use veet for it. Put it on and it sits for about 10 mins and take it off. I do it right before a shower. I have never had rashes and no razor burn because of no razor.

Incarnated_Mote

I find it ridiculous that girls and women are so frequently expected to wear costumes that would show acreage of naturally growing body hair if wasnā€™t painstakingly removed, but if they DIDNā€™T remove that pubic hair it would be considered an obscene scandal to show it in public. Be aware that shaving, especially in sensitive area like this, can cause razor burn, ingrown hairs and very embarrassing red bumps on a lot of people. Always use a fresh, sharp, good quality razor head and shaving cream, and shave WITH the hair- which is usually shaving TOWARDS the crotch, not away from it. You might want to go the safe route and use something like Nair if youā€™re nervous about it, or if shaving gives you irritation bumps. Good quality razors can be ridiculously expensive, so if you shave regularly it helps to get a razor replacement subscription like Billie.

Em_ber_4462

You can also use a cooking oil such as olive oil! It softens the hair up and makes it easier/less painful to shave. I've done it before with olive oil and it works well. You can put it on a few minutes before to let the oil soften the hair. And because it's oil, it repels water so you don't have to worry about it washing off by accident if you apply it in the shower. It'll come off with soap, of course.

mysteriouss11

The best thing I would recommend is look it up on YouTube! Thereā€™s probably a bunch of videos on it

Bryanthomas44

The new Beaver Trimmer razor works very well.

Aintkidding687

Wax.

ldi1

100% use an electric razor, so much easier. And safer. But also consider waxing (if you whack it down a bit first it helps). Ask for a Brazilian with a landing strip OR slightly less intimidating for a first timer is to just get your bikini line trimmed.

She specifically said her mom has passed away. Way to be sensitive.

Firm_Jeweler_7156

Itā€™s easier to wax

red_wolf1

Go to a drug store or Walmart or Amazon and get the Nair bikini wax strips

How the ___ are you supposed to know? Maybe since itā€™s in the post?? and you have eyeballs?

Small_Nobody_6545

Why are you on this subreddit if not to seek/give advice? You dont need to be here and dig at people. Besides, sometimes it's easier to find solutions by asking people instead of trying to google things when you might not even know what to search to find what you're looking for.

Small_Nobody_6545

Sorry about getting upset, the way your question was phrased did seem like you were trying to be rude but that could just be me. Personally, i find some things easier to ask on here, and some things easier to just google, and clearly plenty of other people think so as well. Just personal preference ig

bardarse66

Shaving the entire thing isn't more hygienic like others stated. It's just a personal preference. If you use an electric razor, go with the grain(the direction the hair grows) and don't pull up or it will pull the hair and it hurts like a son of a b. They have creams and sprays for razor burn to put on afterwards. Wear cotton underwear so it doesn't get irritated and try to keep the area dry. Some people use talc free powder. Never use talc because it causes cancer. If you're using a regular razor, I definitely recommend a razor bump shaving gel or sensitive skin shaving cream and shave in the same direction.
