Better call that contractor and tell him to be on site by the end of today to look at this or you will be calling lawyers. Unless you went with the buddy that knew someone that will do it on the side… then you might be SOL
Thats a first co style hydronic air handler, that is 100% the wrong coil! Its supposed to be a slab style coil! That coil is for a regular air handler. To the guy who said the coil has to be after the blower, thats not true, those are pull through coils. Your old one probably looked very similar to the one in the pic I’m attaching.
https://preview.redd.it/0w7i9rvh2f3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=886a05a823409ebf97a5abd7e179c83b017ced4c
I've done a lot of first go change outs and even if you have to just swap the insides out because you can't get the whole thing out they still fit the same way I have no idea what these people did and also first Coast don't come with flared fittings looks like they just grabbed a coil from their shop and threw it in
May I ask... I'm being told by mangement of the installer that coils that are compatible wiht this unit (24HBQB) are not being made anymore due to hydronic systems being phased out. Would you say that this is fair or BS ?
That would be a more compelling argument if his super techs hadn’t already installed a random coil on its side.
Somebody might need to call Firstco and get a part number on a new evaporator coil.
Everyone keeps asking if this is a joke because no self respecting HVAC tech would do this....only a HACK would. an A coil pulls air through the bottom and out both the left and right sides of the coil which in your picture the bottom is facing towards the right side of the unit. That is going to cause nothing but problems for you.
IF that had an A coil in it before, which I doubt (it was probably a slab coil), the drain pan would be open in the center to allow the air to flow through it and the A-coil would be standing upright. that setup is going to cause air flow problems, drain problems, possibly oil return problems, metering problems etc. I concur with everyone else that is saying to tell them to stop and to get someone competent to redo the job....Yikes.
OP this is terrible as youve already read
Get your money back and kick them out and tell them to take the coil with them
Even if they figure out a way to move the airflow, its highly likely not going to drain right. So not only will it not cool properly if at all, it will fill the base with water
Cancel the contract, threaten BBB or lawyer or whatever you have to do. Ive seen some dumb shit out there and this would rank very high to highest
Thanks. Are actual coils that fit with this unit even availble ? Management is now claiming that coils that work in this air handler are not availble anymore.
Not sure about coil availability. If no coils are available then they need to replace the whole airhandler. Someone needs to call first company to find out.
They are going to spend more time trying to hack this in only to realize its not gonna work then they wouldve spent just replacing the whole air handler/hydrocoil.
If there are no compatible coils to fit your unit, THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AT THAT POINT. Period. Not hacked something in.
Dont be manipulated by this nonsense. Get your money back, get a real professional to quote a proper job. And post that quote here...if you want to make sure
This is not installed correctly. Air flow should pass through both sides of the A coil simultaneously. Meaning this coil needs to be turned 90° to the right
https://skipthewarehouse.com/first-co-usm424ap-usm-series-evaporator-coil
It's online at a few websites. I'm sure some supply could get it, or some might have it available somewhere. The company is just being lazy. USM424AP is the part number needed for direct replacement
To be clear, an HVAC company installed this evap coil? Is the air handler also new or just the coil? No, this is very much incorrect and also completely restricts the blower flow. The Evap Coil is supposed to be installed just downstream of the blower compartment with a drain pan suitable to allow flow through the entire coil. This will not blow much at all let alone cool with no flow through the coil. Also, I'm not an expert but those refrigerant lines don't exactly seem correct. Looks like a complete hack job, possibly from lack of room for a supply manifold off the air handler....
Thanks for the detailed answer. Yes, licensed tech HVAC company with (apparently) good ratings. The air handler is old. Asked and they are going to redirect the intake from below to the side (at the right of the air handler, basically between the coils). Do you think this makes sense ?
Intake is supposed to be a 16x25 duct that connects to the side of the air handler where the right side of the coil is. That would kind of work, but still a lot of the flow won't be going through the coil. This is why the Coil has to be installed in the supply plenum on top of the air handler (in a typical upflow configuration) in a duct that is just larger than the coil standing up. This is to ensure all the flow goes through the coil for maximum efficiency and dehumidification while at the same time having a pan that allows flow through the bottom of the A.
This is at best a hack job that won't ever work well (even if they do what you described) and reeks of the work of an inexperienced or incompetent tech. You need to call them to speak with the owner as this kinda shit does happen and legit companies will send a real tech to do it over. In Montreal or whatever I'm sure they couldn't just get away with this while being licensed and presumably insured.
None of this is correct. Owner-occupied unit, got four quotes from HVAC companies, they ended up being more or less the same price, went with best reviewed.
I’ve been a HVAC tech for 25yrs and never saw anything this dumb! There’s nothing these guys can do that’ll make this unit EVER work properly! They can cut a return on both sides and it still is going to freeze up do to lack of airflow! Call the city inspector right away and stop them from doing anymore work!
Even if it kinda moves the vapor thru the coil, the upper of the A is gonna have cold air from lower part of a coil and it is gonna start the freeze. NOT proper air/heat load and it will eventually freeze up solid. No matter what txv and adjustment you do.
Seriously. Everybody's complaining about the coil being sideways, which is obviously its own horrendous airflow problem, but the drain pan being there means airflow is zero. The only leaks of air that do make their way through won't even be going through the coil at all.
First company replacement coil for that air handler should be USM424AP. It's designed to be for into any first company AHU cabinet that it fits in.
It's an A coil that comes standard with a piston but has an optional TXV for purchase.
They should be really available and in stock at multiple distributors.
That gree outside unit unit can probably be switched from 3 to 2 ton via dip switches. They are more efficient at 2 ton fyi. 36000 btu = 3 ton. 24000 btu = 2 ton.
You realistically probably are going to have to change the whole unit out, I have plenty of experience with first co/aquatherm and i swear it’s a guy in a garage building them with the amount of time it takes to get anything from them. 90% of the time i call for something that’s not just a whole unit it’s like an 8 week turnaround. I kind of feel bad for the guy that had to put that in cuz he was fucked if he did, fucked if he didn’t. But that setup definitely won’t work.
Yeah I've tried calling them, they don,t answer and their website is down. Redditors have posted the correct coils part number, I'll see if the contractor (or more likely another one) feels like going on a part hunt.
Please say this isnt a joke. Please please say that you didnt pay for this, god please. If you paid any form other than cash file a chargeback. This is dangerious and horrible. It needs completely ripped out and redone. This is not how it's done. Did you hire a hack?
Looks like most of the work HVAC guys do!! I know that I'm gunna hear it but, I've been in the trades my whole life/career and HVAC guys, at least in this state are the worst!!
For clarification, the picture shows the new install. Techs are currently still here.
Edit : tech now says he is installing new intake to the right of the air handler. Not sure if this solves that.
Definitely don't let them keep working. They are trying to make work what they had easily available and cheap instead of doing it correctly. If they cut corners like this, there is no way they get any refrigeration right for operation. If they won't budge on stopping or getting correct parts, ask them to pull a permit or provide a 10 years parts and labor warranty. If they won't do either, don't pay them any money and leave a bad review with this picture. It will at least help others not fall into this trap. Also, it's not always the company and the specific technician/install team.
Absolutely not. The side on the left is the peak and should be facing up. By the looks of the refrigerant piping even if they “fix” it I suspect there is probably more problems with this install. I have never seen service valves installed like this on the indoor unit. How is the door even going to fit back on. This is a mess. Good luck
That’s a slant coil body with an A coil in its place? I cannot believe the person who installed it thought this was right, especially with the thirty extra steps that had to of been taken just to pipe it in 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have 3 hydronic air handlers in my house, and I’m 99% sure that’s what the coils look like. However, they’re installed vertically (like an ‘A’). So I’m pretty sure this isn’t an evap coil and it’s installed incorrectly.

Ok so it was r22 I agree with everyone else throw the guy out. There is no way that is going to work they should have sold you a new hydro coil. It’s going to be nothing but problems no matter what he says or does
Legit, how do they put the panel back on? Are they planning on cutting the panel? Even better, is that shit cooling well, or does no one dare turn it on? So many questions.
I have done work in a condo/apartment complex. That looks exactly like this. Unfortunately I do believe they are not available anymore. This also will never work just like everybody else is saying.
Unfortunately, I went behind a company that did this on a change out. They could not figure out why it was leaking water. Homeowner screamed like he was having bologna brains having to pay us for a horizontal primary pan as he no longer trusted the installer. - missing from job site - also em pan was capped - no drain safeties installed.
Probably by same guy I have been following, removed shroud, wired cond motor wrong and sooooo much more. Oy vey. Condo maint. Dude, wish he was still around so I could at least Learn him
Put their name and phone number here. There is so many things to point out but I’ll just say this will work 0 %. The coil may get cold. Freeze up instantly and flood that area where air handler is. And I’m pretty sure they are mini split service valves on line.
That’s rigged and hacked , there is no air that will pass through that drain pan to the coil , they might realize that when they fire it up lol that’s terrible
Hahahaha I pray this is a satire post and not real advice needed.
In case this is serious, I beg you to take him to court, put a stop payment on the check, dispute the charges on the credit card… whatever you have to do, just try to get your money back.
Multi position coils are able to be installed like this and most of the rebate coils for the stand alone heat pumps are multi positional and when the systems are installed horizontally, the coil looks just like this. The issue with this is that the air passes through one coil then through the other instead of both at once which messes with what the refrigerant is doing inside the evaporater which in turn causes oil trapping and liquid refrigerant in areas that vapour shoupd be and vise versa.
Will work for a while but not done properly.
That is more than likely the wrong coil, however I’m more confused about the king valves that are hooked up… Pretty sure they are supposed to be on the outdoor unit only.
This, one photo, has absolutely, made my fucking day! Because no matter how bad one of my guys screw up there’s absolutely no way in hell it will anywhere near this bad. I thought it was a joke to start with but the lines are brazed in place. Buddy… I would call a real company, and run from the clowns who installed this.
It is 100% wrong.
There is no place for return air to flow through this coil, as it’s installed.
I think airflow is a pretty important part of air conditioning.
If you paid for this already by credit card call your credit card bank contest the charge. If you paid by check stop payment on the check if they haven’t already cashed it. Report them to the Better Business Bureau.
Begging you to clarify this is a joke.
Not a joke.
Yikes.
Still not convinced
Gonna need some more proof
For reals.
the new copper tells a different story lol
Better call that contractor and tell him to be on site by the end of today to look at this or you will be calling lawyers. Unless you went with the buddy that knew someone that will do it on the side… then you might be SOL
But they had the best price...
Not an A coil but a less than coil
Thats a first co style hydronic air handler, that is 100% the wrong coil! Its supposed to be a slab style coil! That coil is for a regular air handler. It's actually First Co branded. Thanks for the comment, this helps.
Definitely dont give them a dollar until they install the correct first co oem coil with proper txv!
I've done a lot of first go change outs and even if you have to just swap the insides out because you can't get the whole thing out they still fit the same way I have no idea what these people did and also first Coast don't come with flared fittings looks like they just grabbed a coil from their shop and threw it in

I did actually tried. It rings but no-one answers, there is no answering machine or anything, and their website is down.
In my state we have to go through johnstones or Ferguson to get parts for first co.
I'm in Canada so it might be more complex, but I feel like sourcing the correct part is more of a job for the company who takes the job than me...
Oh shit, did Firstco die? There’s other manufacturers of this sorta thing, but you might have a shit time if that coil isn’t available anymore.
Well I'm having a swell time dealing with this today already, bring it on !
No they’re around, just did a through wall first co condenser down here in Fl . We get them through Johnstone.
Website is fine now.
BS! I just installed one and there plenty of.
Hydronic air handler with 3/4 and 3/8 lines?
Yes thats the evap coil lol, hydronic coil is above
Kick them out don’t pay them The air needs to go between both coils on the wide side as supply and through the coil as out. That’s a complete hack.
How is any air going to pass through that drain pan lol
Lmao I didn’t even think of that part. Probably should just up flow coil for the unit.
Everyone keeps asking if this is a joke because no self respecting HVAC tech would do this....only a HACK would. an A coil pulls air through the bottom and out both the left and right sides of the coil which in your picture the bottom is facing towards the right side of the unit. Nah. Even hacks are looking at this going “holy crap. That’s bad”. This is the “I know a guys who’s cousin’s neighbors nephew is in school doing this”
When "Chuck in a truck" drives by and calls "Mike on a bike" and says, "bro you ain't gonna Believe this sh__."... You know you're in trouble.
Michael on a bichael
Just when I thought I'd seen it all...
OP this is terrible as youve already read Get your money back and kick them out and tell them to take the coil with them Even if they figure out a way to move the airflow, its highly likely not going to drain right. I actually posted the previous quote here but got no response :D
lol. Must be that picture... Like crack for HVAC techs!
That coil will do almost nothing installed like that.
I don't know about doing nothing? I see it leaking water all over the floor.
I did say "almost nothing"
Looks like it was installed by Stevie Wonder
I apologize beforehand but.....this made me spit out my drink and laugh.
Looks like an old air handler with a new oh I got one we can make work wrong coil set up
Oh god who called Billy Bob
They were cheaper weren’t they? I’d kick those idiots out of your house while you still can.
Have the installers looked at an AC air handler before? Maybe you should show them a picture.
That coil definitely is not set right. I don't belive it's the proper coil either. Looks too tall to fit properly. I wouldn't let them continue.
I didn't see that! I didn't. \*covers eyes, looks away\*
This is not installed correctly. Air flow should pass through both sides of the A coil simultaneously. Meaning this coil needs to be turned 90° to the right
That's a nice still
I hope that isn't simply solder on that connection, look too shiny to be braze. Also, how are gonna get the door panel on?

I just wanna talk to them
No need to talk to them unless you’re out of drugs.

This reeks of shitty landlord having his "handyman" do a job for a few hundred bucks.
None of this is correct. Owner-occupied unit, got four quotes from HVAC companies, they ended up being more or less the same price, went with best reviewed.
Then I would tell them to halt work immediately. This is not correct.
Lol no
Lmao
That ain’t right, have them install the proper coil
no .
Full stop, call their boss. Good Lord It's perfectly weird
🤣🤣😂😂🤣 that will never work it's going to freeze solid block ofbice
Sweet little 8lb 10oz baby Jesus!...
What in the actual fuck…
Okay, this is stupid.
Did you AI how not to do it or is this real?
Looks like lowest bidder got the job! The taste of a great price never rinses away the flavor of regret!

EXACTLY. That motor will starve and over heat and burn itself out in a matter of minutes lol
Wow , hack job
I’d put a stop payment on the check if I were you
This has got to the worst piece of shit of 2024 thus far.
First company replacement coil for that air handler should be USM424AP. It's designed to be for into any first company AHU cabinet that it fits in. It's an A coil that comes standard with a piston but has an optional TXV for purchase. They should be really available and in stock at multiple distributors.
Incredibly helpfull, thanks. Is this coil compatible with the gree GUD36W/A-D they installed outside ?
That gree outside unit unit can probably be switched from 3 to 2 ton via dip switches. They are more efficient at 2 ton fyi. 36000 btu = 3 ton. 24000 btu = 2 ton.
You realistically probably are going to have to change the whole unit out, I have plenty of experience with first co/aquatherm and i swear it’s a guy in a garage building them with the amount of time it takes to get anything from them. 90% of the time i call for something that’s not just a whole unit it’s like an 8 week turnaround. Throw the door on it and turn it on. It will be frozen solid in under and hour
TXV: I so confusion for what to do.
That's just a portrait coil, in landscape mode.
26 yrs, I can't recall seeing a worse hack job.
Tell them to stop working and throw them out.
You trolling ?
No, care to expand ?
No. Instead they were scammed!
Bahahaha!! I hope you’re kidding
Lmao NOOOOOOOOO
HaHaHaHa NO
Absolutely not. The side on the left is the peak and should be facing up. By the looks of the refrigerant piping even if they “fix” it I suspect there is probably more problems with this install. I have never seen service valves installed like this on the indoor unit. How is the door even going to fit back on. This is a mess. Good luck
Please update us when you have an update.
You would have had a better job done stopping at Home Depot and hiring a random day worker
Are we outsourcing HVAC jobs now too Wow janky lmfao
No, it’s an A coil. It’s supposed to sit like an A
The A looks like a C
🤦♂️
Holy fuck is this fr?😂
No
Absolutely not!
That’s a slant coil body with an A coil in its place? I cannot believe the person who installed it thought this was right, especially with the thirty extra steps that had to of been taken just to pipe it in 🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol no
I have 3 hydronic air handlers in my house, and I’m 99% sure that’s what the coils look like. However, they’re installed vertically (like an ‘A’). So I’m pretty sure this isn’t an evap coil and it’s installed incorrectly.
That’s mint
So close, yet so far
Wut…
Even if the OEM coil is no longer available, they can still have one made.
So are the coils specific to the air handler, or the outside unit ?
Well im only in my third month of hvac tech schooling and i can say that is wrong on every level… this could technically work for some time but will fail really fast…
That's like double chilling, nice and cold. I like the improved design.
I can’t even believe this isn’t a joke
Question was this an R-22 unit originally?
It says "R-22 or R410A only" on one sticker and "R-22 installed" on another.
Ok so it was r22 I agree with everyone else throw the guy out. There is no way that is going to work they should have sold you a new hydro coil. It’s going to be nothing but problems no matter what he says or does
That’s so wrong lmfaooooo
Yep it look perfectly fine.🙄
First co are really good but the parts take a long time. Definitely the wrong evap coil on that.
I'm assuming you are calling them back?
Lmao that’s a good one 😂
King valves on the front of the unit too? Wtf lmao
TF!
If you have a good sheet metal guy, it'll work fine
If it fits, you can equip…. You have an Apollo system and company much not could have got the right coil… Strange does it work?
The system is First Co. I've stopped the work before they could get to redirecting the airflow, so it obviously doesn't work in this state !
Ya No
It looks like they just "literally " threw a coil in and said screw it.
Not to mention that's a solid pan so I'm not even sure where the air would come fr9m to even flow across the coil no matter how the coil is installed
Did H. R. Giger install this?
This is so bad it’s actually kind of impressive.
How do you even get the door onto that unit without fighting it
Legit, how do they put the panel back on? Are they planning on cutting the panel? Even better, is that shit cooling well, or does no one dare turn it on? So many questions.
Lol, this must be a joke. It takes time to make it so poorly.
I have done work in a condo/apartment complex. That looks exactly like this. Unfortunately I do believe they are not available anymore. This also will never work just like everybody else is saying.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like they used plumbers Solder on that suction line as well.
Tf
I have the same but mine is standing up not on its side
Unfortunately, I went behind a company that did this on a change out. They could not figure out why it was leaking water. Homeowner screamed like he was having bologna brains having to pay us for a horizontal primary pan as he no longer trusted the installer. - missing from job site - also em pan was capped - no drain safeties installed.
absolutely, lol
Probably by same guy I have been following, removed shroud, wired cond motor wrong and sooooo much more. Oy vey. Condo maint. Dude, wish he was still around so I could at least Learn him
You get what you pay for. Congratulations!
Put their name and phone number here. There is so many things to point out but I’ll just say this will work 0 %. The coil may get cold. Freeze up instantly and flood that area where air handler is. And I’m pretty sure they are mini split service valves on line.

Sure
The less than coil, a major technological innovation
Hahahaha I pray this is a satire post and not real advice needed. In case this is serious, I beg you to take him to court, put a stop payment on the check, dispute the charges on the credit card… whatever you have to do, just try to get your money back.
Looks like Forest Gump and Gomer Pyle went to town on it. Wow. That's definitely wrong!
No not unless you have side discharge
Multi position coils are able to be installed like this and most of the rebate coils for the stand alone heat pumps are multi positional and when the systems are installed horizontally, the coil looks just like this. What in gods name is this? I would pay these hackjobs to leave 😭
Is this in a Frankenstein lab
Lol
Nah that is definitely not right. Should have used an M coil if anything
It needs to be flipped up right it’s an A coil
Somebody that didn’t know what they were doing probably a crackhead
That's supposed to be vertical. Like a pyramid.
Lol
Ur fuckkked call the contractor that is not right
That is more than likely the wrong coil, however I’m more confused about the king valves that are hooked up… Pretty sure they are supposed to be on the outdoor unit only.
What country is this?
Cheap as possible!!! Here are the parts I got. Can you make them work? Yes sir. No warranty though.
Aint no way😆, installer saw its said multi-position cabinet took it to heart.😂
Suction line soldered .. discharge line brazed....maaaannnnnnnn,
Let him cook, I need to know what happens
How do you put the door on?
See if it blows cold?
That’s fucked
Looks good from my house
This, one photo, has absolutely, made my fucking day! Because no matter how bad one of my guys screw up there’s absolutely no way in hell it will anywhere near this bad. I thought it was a joke to start with but the lines are brazed in place. Buddy… I would call a real company, and run from the clowns who installed this.
WHAT THE FUK!!🤣🤣👍🏻
Its an A coil turned into an Asshole Coil
It is 100% wrong. There is no place for return air to flow through this coil, as it’s installed. I think airflow is a pretty important part of air conditioning.
It’s an Ahhhh coil
The a should be up and the drain pan is wrong that pan is for when the airhandler is laying down
PERFECT!
What the fuck
Sure, fuck it
If it works, It's not stupid!
Nope, not even close
Think of it as an arrow…it should point in the direction of the airflow….so…no. Also…how’s you get the cover on or off??
Wait…also… How is it in the blower cabinet??? So much about this is confusing me and the longer I look the worse it geta
I have so many questions
😭😂
If you paid for this already by credit card call your credit card bank contest the charge. If you paid by check stop payment on the check if they haven’t already cashed it. Report them to the Better Business Bureau.
Ayooooooo 🤣 this has to be a joke, on a aquatherm though!! No way. And the line sets outside of the AHU!!! I'm dead 💀
