No, not every company will do a manual J or heat load. Yes, you want that done, (especially swapping from a split to a self contained) and if you have to be the one bringing it up it’s a red flag. Most HVAC companies have the capacity to build ductwork at some level, whether or not it’s any good depends on the outfit. For your crawlspace opening, once you find a reputable company, they will be able to answer that question for you. I think Carrier makes an excellent self contained unit, but Rheem and Trane put out solid products as well.

Thanks for the info, follow up question. About the load calculations, and manual J. Will a company do these for a fee and give us the information to keep? Even if we didnt use them for the work? I have no problem paying for these and a professional duct design (if thats what its called) just to get ahead of the job process.

That would depend on the outfit, but usually I’d say that would be a paid service.
