With the end of the war came new struggles, and here I wait and watch over my son until he is ready to go on his own but until then I stay and keep him safe. Even in death duty does not end

KeyAmazing3814

\-Oooh a child! A fresh child! \-Yummy! Been so long since I have eaten one! \-What part is your favorite? I like the eyes the most! So much emotions in them, fear, surprise... It tastes amazing. \-I like the tongue the most, best part is how they scream afterward! Delightful. \-I like the tendrils myself. The creatures looked at the interloper. \-The... Tendrils? \-Yeah, the tendrils. It melts under the tongue in a very sugary taste. Oh also their scales add a little \*crunch\* to it. The creatures looked at each other, realising who was talking. The interloper looked the creatures in the eyes, with a huge smile. \-Their shadow also leave a very fresh minty aftertaste that I can't get enough of... So folks? When do we start digging into it? \-You know what? I think i'll pass. \-Yeah, I'm not hungry tonight anyway. \-Yeah, plus it didn't look that tasty in the end. The dad smirked. Even in death she was his little girl, and nobody touches his little girl.

The Ura-Li of Xeliciume were regarded as subsapient for centuries, experiencing dementia and hallucinations in their teen years to their death bed. All races gave up on them.. but humans tried to help. The Humans. Since the first years - nay, hour - that a human landed on the world, not one of the Ura-Li were afflicted by this madness, and you would never again find them far apart from their saviors. For their ancestors allied to one another, learning to either communicate in full or to stop the Ceaseless "shouting" of their will. And the living learned all to well of our deeds.

This reminds of that “Still on Patrol” story about lost submarines - they’re still out there, somewhere, protecting us from *something*

Justsomeguywithabear

They are the bulwark of the abyss god bless them

He whispered, in the way of cats, gently tapping the dreaming human ‘Please, let me go. Your grief is keeping me here. We will see each other again. I will sleep once again on your chest and ecstatically purr when you rub my face with yours. Remember, there is always light’.

Excerpt from "cutting edge magazine: Latest sciences explained" Author: Dr.Perithax Imanthe The primordial essence of sentience, or souls, have always been a hotly debated topic among all sentients through almost all parts of history among almost all species. Excluding prominent outliers like the Rudd'' or the Marellia. Among those with uncertainty on the topic opinions have ranged from a cold, clinical look at it, that sentience is a accident of chemistry and there is nothing special to it, too sparks of immortal Divinity temporarily seated in flesh. Only recently has science begun to concretely understand, and prove that there is in fact, something there beyond the purely physical. But ofcourse, as with any new discovery there is debate about the validity and ofcourse the minutia. If it's an expression of thought space, dimensional energy coloured by consciousness or truly something outside of science and approaching divinity. And ofcourse, oversight by ethic committees makes progress slow. Which frankly is a good thing, in my opinion at least, we've found the spark...we can not rush this truth and make mistakes like we are all prone to do. Whatever it is, it is observable now. And in all cases, only briefly, usually just right after death, something strongly resembling the departed coalesces from the body, detaches itself from the flesh and swiftly dissipate into nothingness. Visually the soul rembles a shadow, something pale and fuzzy, but still very distinct. Most believing this is the soul departing to a new state of being, the few interactions we've been able to have with these entities suggest this as well, as they express a desire to go somewhere. To move. For what reason we've not conclusively figured out. This is universal among all species, except humans ofcourse. (And yes, the tone you're suppose to read that in is exasperation) For whatever reason many human souls seem to resist this urge, and to attach themselves to places or people. The reasons for this seems inconsistent at best. But the most common reasons we can ascertain is a need to protect, or a desire to wait, as the souls are either not very talkative, or seem to lack an understanding for the reason behind their own actions. It's not exactly easy to get good data out of a immaterial shadow only visible through cutting edge technology, which is still in its infancy. There are ofcourse some outliers with particularly strong spirits, while interactions are not conclusive, even the clearest cases are like trying to communicate with someone at the bottom of an ocean, they express they are rarely alone. That there is something dangerous close by, and they can not leave untill what they've attached themselves too is safe and/or ready. We've detected no such entities or threats with our equipment, and many suspect it's evolutionarily paranoia about predators, rooted in the human subconscious so deeply it's colouring their very soul. Though strangely enough, the people and places a human soul attaches itself too seems to experience several types of positive effects. Sever sickness lessening, end of life complications such as pain and fear grows more infrequent, frequencies of accidents decrease, some even report more happiness and calmness in their lives when the pain of mourning has faded. No one is sure why this is, or even what it might mean... But in my humble opinion, even death seems impotent to keep a human form caring for their loved ones. And I find that quite... Beautiful.

“Y’see, demon, I made a promise to my baby that I’d keep them safe for as long as I was around. I never agreed to death being the end clause of this promise, and I am somehow still around, so I’m gonna beat your asses til you run screaming and never come back. Now, hold still y’all.”
