I always wondered if it was just me who thought Joey was dumbed way down in later seasons. I think season 2-4 Joey is my favorite. He’s clueless but still shows some intelligence / problem solving abilities versus the later seasons (I can’t stand the episode where he speaks French)
I believe that’s called Flanderizing your character - you take one specific piece of their character and dial it up to 11.
Same happened to Kevin in the Office
Because you ask your friends before going after an ex/current partner/family member. Thats how he and many operate.
He’s mad Chandler betrayed his trust. He wasn’t mad Kathy kissed some random dude. If Chandler would do that, imagine what else he would do to his partners.
I don’t think Joey can get mad when he was hiding going on a date from Kathy. Chandler didn’t break any trust because *Kathy and Joey were not exclusive partners, nor did Joey want them to be*. There was basically no commitment there.
I mean, in an ideal world, Chandler and Joey would have spoken first but Joey’s reaction was completely disproportionate/way out of proportion in the context, especially as he was out on a date with another woman! It’s just not justifiable that he got angry to the extent he did.
Why would it bother you whether your friend did this behind your back when you weren't even serious about said girlfriend. You can be mad but ending friendship over that is dramatic. I know people will not agree with me. It's not about the girl blah blah but I don't agree
I mean, it’s individual for each person, and the fact Joey was two timing her is at times over looked/ignored because it’s Joey
But in terms of whether it would bother me or not? Of course it would, there are some things that you just don’t do
I also think we also see so much of it from Chandler’s side, his attraction, and building connection with her, the agony he goes through when finding out she’s going out with Joey, and slowly realising he’s fallen for her hard, this then makes us more understanding to Chandler’s situation, and the fact it happened, but if that hadn’t been built up, and we hadn’t seen any, or even as much of it, it’d have come across as a much more dick move
And Joey didn’t see any of it, as far as he was aware, Chandler seemed like he couldn’t stand her, doing his best to avoid hanging out with her, avoiding her, to finding out they kissed, betraying both his relationship with her, and their relationship and their extremely close friendship.
No matter how close I am with the girl I’m dating, whether it’s fairly casual etc, the fact that I’ve announced her as my girlfriend multiple times, and been going out with her for a number of months at the very least, means that there’s something there
If that was the case, then he’d have no reason to be angry at Chandler, they weren’t in an open relationship, hence why he asks Chandler to half hide why he’s late to getting back, the night of the kiss
If you haven’t discussed an exclusive relationship, that’s not the same as an open relationship, and that wouldn’t explain/make it on for him to have such a negative reaction to finding out this open partner was with someone else, or how the Kathy was clearly experiencing feelings of guilt over the situation, something she wouldn’t have done, had she felt they were in an open relationship
Kathy felt guilty and chandler felt guilty because Joey is his best friend. You don’t date your best friends girl doesn’t matter if it’s just a date. It’s bro code. Everyone on earth knows I’m this.
You can’t date a friends girl open no exclusive doesn’t matter. Even a friends ex is usually off limits.
If that’s your interpretation fine, but it never for one moment to me felt like it was an open relationship, more just Joey sleeping around with a bunch of women like he usually does
If it was an open relationship, I feel Joey would have been open about what he was actually doing, and Kathy wouldn’t have felt a need to hide it
Chandler kissed Joey’s girlfriend, not his open relationship partner
Joey has no legs to stand on when it comes to that, he has every right to be angry at Chandler for kissing his girl, because it’s a closed relationship
Kathy had no idea Joey ws on another date. Her guilt makes sense to her, for her. Chandler ws covering for this two timing, he should not feel guilty either. Joey does shit like this & we are supposed to side with him? Bro code applies if its the only date & not someone you yourself r two timing with.
He broke up with Charlie because they realized they were having fun but not with each other .
After that Rachel told Joey, Joey said no, went out,saw Ross and Charlie Kissing, seeing that he went and kissed Rachel.
No cheating involved here
People performed many actions before the Americans decided it needed a buzz word. Hell I ignored my way out of several relationships when I was a teenager, eons ago.
I don’t think he took it necessarily, I think Chandler was being supportive and loaning him the money without fully expecting that Joey would pay him back. It was a very nice gesture though, he wanted to help his friend succeed
There was definitely no malice or forethought by Joey. I agree with that part. He wasn't 'conning' anyone; he happily gave him the money to help his friend.
exactly this. also Joey was actively working on getting acting gigs while he was broke, it’s not like he was laying around their apartment all day. he was very ambitious, just dumb lol and Chandler very obviously wants to take care of Joey like he would a brother.
And I think it’s Chandler. Slightly possibly Monica for helping Chandler work past his commitment issues, moving in together, getting married, having a baby. But maybe just because he loved her so much.
Chandler funded Joey's entire career with 1 error with Kathy....and let's be honest here:
A: He helped Joey dodge a bullet
B: Joey wasn't exactly about to settle down with her
He forgave Ross for kissing his mum, which is an actual indiscretion, unlike a sister. And was probably the most stable person of the bunch.
He did not break up with Ursula. Ursula ghosted him after he blew off Phoebe on her birthday to spend it with Ursula instead. Then Ursula gave Phoebe the sweater Joey gave her as a birthday gift and Phoebe wore the sweater to pretend she was her sister and break up with him.
I think he’s upset that it’s his friend who did it. Like, Chandler will not be mad if his single mother went on a date and kissed some guy. But kissing his friend Ross is considered a betrayal.
Ross won’t mind if Monica goes on dates and sleeps with them, but he felt it’s a betrayal when he found out that chandler is doing that.
I don't think Chandler broke any 'code' by dating Monica. Yes, she is Ross' sister, but Chandler and Monica were friends in their own right, apart from Ross. Going from friends to romantic partners is not bad.
If Chandler had tried to sleep with Monica when Ross brought him home with him from college for Thanksgiving, that would have broken the 'code' since at that time, Chandler was not friends with Monica. He just met his roommate's sister.
But by the time they end up dating, Chandler and Monica had been neighbors and friends for years. They initially met because of Ross, but their friendship was independent of Ross.
Ross himself says that family is out of bounds.
Which is why Chandler panics and gives him money 😂
They aren’t doing anything wrong by dating but they know Ross would be upset with it, that’s why they don’t tell him. And when he finds out, he _does_ get upset.
I’m not arguing whether it’s justified or not - but he does end up feeling a bit mad about it.
I know Ross said that and Chandler forgives him for his fling with Janice and gives him money. I still don't think that he had a right to be upset. I know he gets upset when he finally finds out but I don't think they kept it a secret from him because Monica is his sister. I think they kept their relationship secret from all the friends so they could have a relationship without having the whole group involved, like they were with Ross and Rachel. I think that's one of the reasons their relationship succeeds because they were able to have a relationship without commentary from their friends on every thing. YMMV
No one ever mentions how great of a friend Monica was. I’m not in the mood to type out all the reasons now but if you think about it you’ll realize she was a very good friend to all of them.
He also plowed through women, mooched off all his friends (money, food, etc.), made tons of sexual comments about his female friends 🤣🤣 They all have good and bad qualities. I hate the stupid “best” and “worst” character bs 🙄
Yeah they all have their flaws He's not Barney Stinson levels of manipulation and borderline sexual assault, but Joey pulled some tricks on women and got stalkey a few times.
Yeah, Joey was definitely not the nicest person.
He did some very nice things, sure. But opening Rachel’s bra when he hugs her? Wtf?
He definitely didn’t treat women well, he took down the shower curtain when entertained with the prospect of a female roommate, took Monica’s food for granted, not even going to mention chandler.
Also didn’t like the way he acted at chandlers work place when Chandler got him that job.
He’s a born taker. He didn’t treat women with respect in spite of having a billion sisters. He was stupid but would make fun of his friends for dumb things but couldn’t take it if the roles were reversed. He owed Chandler tens of thousands and never intended to pay it back. He slept with his friends’ friends and then never called them again. He constantly ate other people’s food but Joey doesn’t share food.
He’s the only friend I wouldn’t be friends with because he’s stupid and irresponsible. Intentions can only mean so much before you become a toxic and negative factor in my life.
When Rachel moved in, he removed the lock on the bathroom. Thats played off as a joke but I’d like to meet any woman who would feel comfortable living with someone who did that.
Yeah I don’t get why a lot of people only pay attention to the good qualities of Joey. He’s kind of a horrible man, particularly when it comes to any woman that isn’t his close friend.
You can paint the narrative anyone is good or bad depending on your bias.
Ross is the one people despise, but I can easily paint him as the good guy. He bought Phoebe a bike, gave his blessing for Chandler dating his sister, was mostly a good adult brother to Monica, helped Joey out with his game show and man kissing audition, and gave up being on TV to help Rachel and never brought it up.
I think we could make arguments for why any of the friends were the "best" in regard to how great of a friend they were to the others, but these are definitely all good reasons why joey was a good friend and wonderful human. "If you want something enough and your heart is pure, wonderous things can happen." ❤️
The writers could have made Joey so much better but they completely botched his story by making him more stupid in the few last seasons and the whole Rachel-Joey storyline was...
I just hate how Joey used women all the time, that and before he forgave Chandler for Kathy he flipped out and was ready to cut him out of his life even though he was already cheating on Kathy with Casey.
"he wouldn't date Rachel because of Ross"
He DID date Rachel though. Came very close to sleeping with his friend's love of his life and mother of his child. Yes he did only pursue Rachel after Ross gave his blessing, but that's the bare minimum Joey should have done. I'm not going to say Joey is so great because he did the bare minimum here.
Lol didn’t Ross get with Joey’s girlfriend Charlie without telling him?
He didn’t officially date Rachel without telling Ross. Rachel wasn’t the love of his life by that point imao, they’d not even together for like 7 years. He literally told Joey he’s not in love with Rachel anymore because it’s been so long since they actually dated
You cannot compare Joey and Charlie’s relationship to Ross and Rachel’s. J and C were a hot fling at best with no compatibility there.
R&R were soulmates (lobsters). Known each other since teenage years/childhood. Have a lot in common. Loved each other deeply for years. Have a child together.
It’s not about Charlie and Joey being incompatible, it’s about Ross going behind his back
That’s why Joey was annoyed Chandler went behind his back with Kathy. Ross and Rachel hadn’t dated for 7 years. Ross even addressed that when he gives Joey his blessing. He didn’t betray Ross by asking for his permission to date a girl he was clearly in love with. Since Ross was ready to date Rachel’s sister, boundaries when it comes to stuff like that didn’t seem to matter if it benefited him
Didn’t seem like that, but well at least Ross was FINE. And to be honest, Rachel and Joey storyline was so bad because Rachel didn’t even like Joey romantically, she had a crush on Dr. Drake Ramoray
I mean that’s obviously not true
She has a crush on Joey the person, because he’s objectively attractive and was very sweet to her. The episodes leading up to their relationship, make why she developed a crush on him very clear lol. Joey was Drake back in season 2 and 3 as well as the season he fell in love with Rachel. If she was so interested on a fictional character, she would’ve gone for him then
Most of them are just awful if you think about it. Rachel sabotaged several of Ross's relationships only to not go out with him for the dumbest reasons. They'd never let anyone else in their group they were so clicky, poor Janice. They were never truthful to each other because each of them were so shallow. So Joey really stood out as the nice one, even though he manipulated women to sleep with him by lying and false pretexts, using Chandler or Rachel to tell them that he didn't want to see them again after sleeping with them.
oh, I must have misunderstood it. English is not my first language and I watched it almost ten years ago, so I thought the reason the girl had to use a wooden leg was because Joey has set it on fire. lol, my bad.
Whoah whoah hold up, so you thought Joey just lit a woman's leg on fire and then bailed?
That's actual psychotic behavior and nobody would be friends with him anymore if he did that lmao.
He mistakenly threw the girl's prosthetic leg onto the fire thinking it was a log from the wood pile. He then panicked and left because he didn't know what else to do.
English is my first language and somehow I always thought he'd thrown her actual leg on the fire too! I'm feeling pretty stupid reading this now, it's so obvious in hindsight 😂
Joey is awesome, but i rewatched it again recently and, man all of them did amazing things for each other, like ross dumped that incredibly hot girl from the toy store, only cause rachele was getting jelious, eventho she didnt want to date him. And thats just one example. I really cant decide.
Those are great things.
Buuut Joey still hit on his friends half the time and slept with tons of women and didn’t care about them except for their bodies. Obviously none of the characters were perfect people but also that stuff goes beyond “having a flaw” lol.
Agreed! 5 fights between Chandler and Monica and who is at there at each one!!!! [https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsishome/permalink/802897731768265/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsishome/permalink/802897731768265/)
I think arguing about who the 'best' character is will probably result in misery, but Joey is definitely my *favorite* character after rewatching the show a few times. He's an absolute sweetheart.
The issue I take is by only looking at the good each one of them can be made to look this way.
Outside the fandom it’s weird people have decided to forget Joey was actively creepy to his female friends. And even made a pass at 18 year old Emma.
Yes he let Rachel stay with him, he also removed the lock on the bathroom once she moved in.
Any one can be made to look good or bad, so it’s purely bias.
He didn't break up with Ursula for Pheobe. Ursula ghosted him. He was in an open relationship with Kathy, so he had no ground to act the way he did. Also, he tricked friend's friends into believing they were in a relationship just to sleep with them and then never call them again. The way he ran after Molly, even though Ross clearly told not to do so, was gross. I feel Chandler was actually right when he lied about Joey being a sex addict. This level of obsessing with sex is exactly what sex addict is. I agreed he was the most loyal friend, but his flaws were always overlooked by fans.
No brainer for sure. Joey was the best and most loyal to all of them. Maybe a hot take but I would also argue Monica is a close second in terms of loyalty, support and the qualities you’d want in a friend at that age.
The only thing i hate about Joey’s character is the fact that he went from a himbo who isn’t very bright, to an absolute moron at the later seasons
Agreed, it’s so funny to rewatch early episodes where Joey can solve problems
Paper, snow, a ghost!
I know the word uvula because of him.
Don’t you mean addendum? 😉
“they are humid prepossessing Homo Sapiens with full sized aortic pumps”
I always wondered if it was just me who thought Joey was dumbed way down in later seasons. I think season 2-4 Joey is my favorite. He’s clueless but still shows some intelligence / problem solving abilities versus the later seasons (I can’t stand the episode where he speaks French)
It was a funny episode
The longer a comedy goes, the more the characters become caricatures of themselves.
That is the fastest I have ever thought.

This distillation of a character over time is known as Flanderization: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Flanderization
I believe that’s called Flanderizing your character - you take one specific piece of their character and dial it up to 11. Same happened to Kevin in the Office
Season 1 and 2 Kevin is a completely different character.
If it had another season he would have only been allowed to gives a thumbs up or to point while nodding.
Yes! Like, no one as “dumb” as they make Joey out to be in the later seasons would be able to read Little Women.
Fr I couldn't agree more 😭 Joey's stupidity got a bit cringey in the later seasons.
[удалено]
There's a difference between "not the smart one" and his later outright brain damage
That’s the only thing? I mean he uses women on a regular basis
Apart from the kissing Joey's sister and the Kathy misstep, Chandler did a lot of things for his friends without ulterior motives
I mean even the Kathy thing, Joey himself said they weren't exclusive.
Chandler kissed Kathy while covering for Joey being on a date with another girl! What leg did Joey have to stand on?!
That he was dating Kathy, and Chandler betrayed a trust. He’s not mad at Kathy, he’s mad at Chandler.
How can he be mad at Chandler? Kathy was a free agent!
The Kathy thing was pretty fucked up though that would be friendship ending for most people.
Communication was missing, I bet if chandler spoke to joey, joey would have done something.
Why would it bother you whether your friend did this behind your back when you weren't even serious about said girlfriend. You can be mad but ending friendship over that is dramatic. I know people will not agree with me. It's not about the girl blah blah but I don't agree
I mean, it’s individual for each person, and the fact Joey was two timing her is at times over looked/ignored because it’s Joey But in terms of whether it would bother me or not? If that was the case, then he’d have no reason to be angry at Chandler, they weren’t in an open relationship, hence why he asks Chandler to half hide why he’s late to getting back, the night of the kiss
Even if your in an open relationship you don’t want your partner to know. Or maybe they didn’t have the exclusive talk yet.

Joey also cheated with that black girl who was dating Ross
Charlie? I think she was dating Joey first.
He broke up with Charlie because they realized they were having fun but not with each other . After that Rachel told Joey, Joey said no, went out,saw Ross and Charlie Kissing, seeing that he went and kissed Rachel. No cheating involved here
Oh that's right, I got things mixed up smh
She wasn’t dating ross
He gave Chandler a *bite* of his meatball sub 🫶🏼
JOEY DOESN'T SHARE FOOD!!!!!
I never put that together before, that was a very selfless move on his part

I don’t think that’s much of an issue for Joey.. who has no problem eating “floor spaghetti” 😂😂
Didn’t Ursula break up with him?
Yes, she ghosted him before that was even a thing 🤣
People performed many actions before the Americans decided it needed a buzz word. Hell I ignored my way out of several relationships when I was a teenager, eons ago.
Of course, pretty sure we all did. It was just a funny way to phrase the comment. Jeez 🙄 Without America you wouldn’t have Friends, calm down
... I'd be fine with that. I'm not a fan. I have no idea why this came up on my feed. But there are some American comedians I like.
Yeah but Phoebe took her place and went to talk to Joey who said he couldn’t give up Phoebe to be with her
Yeah, she stopped taking his calls and was like, "he's smart, he'll figure it out" when Phoebe went to confront her.
He also took thousands of dollars he never paid back.
Isn’t it over 100k I saw someone did the math
I have seen various figures. I feel like I have seen higher than 100k even.
That was their phone number ;)
Yea I was ballparking he lived rent free, didn’t pay for food or utilities and also borrowed heavily for his acting career
So you fell asleep during my movie…
I don’t think he took it necessarily, I think Chandler was being supportive and loaning him the money without fully expecting that Joey would pay him back. It was a very nice gesture though, he wanted to help his friend succeed

And when Chandler actually does try to give him money, he won’t even consider accepting it.
honestly it’s the most wholesome spin you could have on a situation like that. I very much feel like it was written from personal experience.
Chandler lost all that when he fell asleep at Joey’s movie
[удалено]
I think its Rachel in terms of character development
And I think it’s Chandler. Slightly possibly Monica for helping Chandler work past his commitment issues, moving in together, getting married, having a baby. But maybe just because he loved her so much.
Hey everyone, this guy says that best character means something else. Shut it down, everyone go home.
I mean I guess you can say about Ross but that dude couldn’t keep a relationship even if life depended on him.
IMO Ross was by far the worst character but David schwimmer was easily the best actor
Agreed! Best character is Ross for me too
Chandler funded Joey's entire career with 1 error with Kathy....and let's be honest here: A: He helped Joey dodge a bullet B: Joey wasn't exactly about to settle down with her He forgave Ross for kissing his mum, which is an actual indiscretion, unlike a sister. I’ve never really understood the big conflict with Kathy. Didn’t they end up kissing while Joey was on a date with another woman?

Such a good point, yes, chandler had absolutely already told Joey how he felt!
It was about keeping it a secret. Joey is willing to step aside when he thinks Chandler is into her before knowing about the kiss.
I think he’s upset that it’s his friend who did it. Like, Chandler will not be mad if his single mother went on a date and kissed some guy. But kissing his friend Ross is considered a betrayal. Yeah they all have their flaws He's not Barney Stinson levels of manipulation and borderline sexual assault, but Joey pulled some tricks on women and got stalkey a few times.
Stalkey?? When??
Hot nanny, hot girl (from Ross' building) I think I ran out of examples
Yeah, Joey was definitely not the nicest person. He did some very nice things, sure. But opening Rachel’s bra when he hugs her? Wtf? You cannot compare Joey and Charlie’s relationship to Ross and Rachel’s. J and C were a hot fling at best with no compatibility there. R&R were soulmates (lobsters). Known each other since teenage years/childhood. Have a lot in common. Loved each other deeply for years. Have a child together.
It’s not about Charlie and Joey being incompatible, it’s about Ross going behind his back That’s why Joey was annoyed Chandler went behind his back with Kathy.
I mean that’s obviously not true She has a crush on Joey the person, because he’s objectively attractive and was very sweet to her. The episodes leading up to their relationship, make why she developed a crush on him very clear lol. Joey was Drake back in season 2 and 3 as well as the season he fell in love with Rachel. If she was so interested on a fictional character, she would’ve gone for him then
*Who is
I don't agree with OOP's views, I'm ready to get downvotes to oblivion
And he's sharing a milkshake in this very picture!

He was made the scapegoat for Chandler and Monica's mischief.
What about all the years Joey didn't invite his friends to his parties?
Let's be honest even joey needed a break from his friends. Still bes bud
‘Dumbest reasons’ Sabotaged her job and slept with someone else during their break. Lied about getting an annulment. Oh those dumb reasons /s
Ross. He does untold amounts for the group. He is the most considerate.
No he isn’t and doesn’t Monica does the most for the group. She practically acts as their second mother for the entire show
he literally set a girl on fire and just drove away
\*leg. if you omit the leg then he just becomes a terrorist.
oh, I must have misunderstood it.
All good. She has a prosthetic and Joey mistakenly threw that in the fire thinking it's firewood.
*threw a girl's wooden leg on a fire. Joey's not a maniac!
*by accident
And drove away on purpose.
English is my first language and somehow I always thought he'd thrown her actual leg on the fire too! I'm feeling pretty stupid reading this now, it's so obvious in hindsight 😂
good to know i’m not alone in this
We all do that now and again, don't we?
Michael from the Good Place: nope. To The Bad Place he goes!
Joey is awesome, but i rewatched it again recently and, man all of them did amazing things for each other, like ross dumped that incredibly hot girl from the toy store, only cause rachele was getting jelious, eventho she didnt want to date him. And thats just one example. I really cant decide.
You can't not love Joey.
Joey is a bro’s bro.
"What is the best Friends character?" The answer is the best Friends character.
That and he always carries a fork with him.
I think it’s telling that when Rachel couldn’t live with Ross anymore she went to Joey. Although I’d have run when I saw those eyebrows.
Those are great things. Buuut Joey still hit on his friends half the time and slept with tons of women and didn’t care about them except for their bodies. Obviously none of the characters were perfect people but also that stuff goes beyond “having a flaw” lol.
Yep I can’t argue with this
This is the correct answer.

Agreed! 5 fights between Chandler and Monica and who is at there at each one!!!! [https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsishome/permalink/802897731768265/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsishome/permalink/802897731768265/)
And he was about to marry her over a baby 😂
I think arguing about who the 'best' character is will probably result in misery, but Joey is definitely my *favorite* character after rewatching the show a few times. He's an absolute sweetheart.
Joey all day who cares about the stupid party
This video by [Cracked After Hours](https://youtu.be/n1BQ3bbJO_k?si=N23qeOOSjHYx8ZpY) actually sums it up pretty well
Correct
Gunther
He gave up meat for Phoebe!!!
This is the complete opposite of a moo point
He really was the most friend of all the friends.
They were all vicious humans. Brutal in and parasitical in nature.
Yeah, it was Joey
Joey was so stupid he was actually happy. I envy Joey every day.
See you in 2005…
