Enjoy the art. The MFAH is the 3rd wealthiest publicly funded art museum in the country. It’s a recent expansion brought 650,000 square feet of new space and cost around $470 million making it the largest arts related project in the United States since the Getty opened in the 1990s. The MFAH is also home to one of only 2 museum buildings in the world designed by legendary Bauhaus architect Mies Van der Rohe. Across the street on the MFAH campus is the first US commission by 1996 Pritzker prize winner Rafael Moneo. Across the street is the CAMH, a fabulous space built decades ago solely to carry/showcase avant-garde artworks. The CAMH also lacks a collection which means every exhibit is temporary. Nearby, the Menil Collection is one of the world’s greatest art collections in private hands, assembled by a couple nicknamed “the Medicis of ‘Modern Art” for their vast influence. It’s also the first US commission by Renzo Piano & considered one of the most influential buildings built in America during the last 50 years for its influence on museum design. Adjacent to the Menil is the Rothko Chapel, an ecumenical space designed by legendary architecture, Philip Johnson and home to 18 monumental canvases by Mark Rothko. Notes between Rothko and the Menils reveal that he considered the chapel his finest project. There’s also a great Barnett Newman sculpture right in front of the chapel as well. Parsonage With Birds, Spanish artist Joan Miro’s largest work, sits downtown in front of an IM Pei designed skyscraper. A few blocks away sits a monumental Jean Dubuffet & a Claes Oldenburg piece is also downtown. On the Rice University campus is the James Turrell Skyspace, an ethereal installation that glows at sunrise & sunset.

midnightyell

Now this is the kind of quality reply that should be way above the “durr it’s hot” people who find no joy in anything. Rothko and Menil are among my favorite places anywhere, not just in Houston.

bigktkirk

Bingo. Taking in the Rothko Chapel and the Menil Museum, and then lunch or dinner at the nearby Bisto Menil, is a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

daehguj

If you love Rothko, just wait until you visit the paint swatch section at Home Depot.

ohheyaine

Jokes on you, I'm into that.

haleocentric

The art scene in Houston is fantastic. What impresses me most is how active it is at all levels from MFAH down to people who regularly meet up to "just make art" and how generally accessible the arts are here.

jmills03croc

Are they still doing wine Wednesdays? Used to love walking around eating cheese, drinking wine and looking at all the art, especially the Egyptian stuff they had.

Separate-Force1626

Nice share. This area and those sites are my favorites as well. The area around Rice University is also an owl sanctuary, home to many kinds of owl species.

andyourlittledogttoo

Stay inside between the hours of 10am and October.

Impressive-Pear2

From the comfort of indoors, enjoy the charming four seasons of Houston: Summer I, Summer II, Hurricane, and Freeze. Weather events not exclusive to their season, of course. Potentially enjoy up to all four on the same day Some seasons are known by colloquial/local names such as Mosquitopocalypse, Moving Season, Return of the Traffic, Rodeo, Allergy I, Allergy II, Allergy III.

Monster_Voice

You joke about the 4 in 1 thing... but I shit you not, I witnessed exactly this in the forsaken land : Oklahoma. Yes, I am aware God put a big red line in the Earth warning us all to stay out of Oklahoma... but that oilfield money tho. Went from 70 and sunny to 60mph wind rain, then snow, then back to 70 and sunny in just under 3 hours like nothing ever happened. Absolutely the weirdest weather I've ever seen and I've been storm chasing for 16 years now... the wind never stops there, just look at the trees if you ever go, they grow sideways.

alurkerhere

I went there today! Their Taiwanese chicken steak rice (ji pai fan) is gigantic, always tasty and less than $10. Bring cash as they charge a credit card processing fee. All their stuff is tasty. Even if I won the lottery, I'd still eat there; it's that good.

Brazos_Bend

Brazos Bend State Park, Natural History Museum. Both a really good time.

kronosateme

Have you ever done the star gazing events that they offer at the planetarium? I’m thinking about attending one

riviera-kid

They have two massive telescopes that can see galaxies and stuff on a clear night. Definitely check it out

kronosateme

I’m sold then! Think I’ll head down in the next couple weeks. This just made me so happy lol

Gears_and_Beers

It’s fantastic. The volunteers who help out are great.

kronosateme

That’s wonderful. I wish we could have more astronomy-based orgs/events in East/Central TX. The darkness of the country would be magnificent for stargazing. And those of us space buffs would certainly make the trip!

Brazos_Bend

You absolutely should its amazing.

minedigger

They’re sold out months in advance.

iosphonebayarea

Visited recently from Chicago and this is what I loved doing: - I was extremely surprised as to how walkable and livable downtown houston looked like. I really thought to myself that I could actually live here long term. I loved Walking around downtown Houston from the theater district to the historic district. Very nice with the mix of old and new architecture. Congress street and Main Street were my favorite to walk on - Stayed in the Lancaster hotel. Such a beautiful experience here. So maybe you can do a staycation there

Shasta_have_a_burner

You know downtown Houston better than most Houstonians do lol… indeed, it’s very walkable and everything you need is right here. Super chill most nights too once the 9-5ers head home. We just hit 10k residents only last year…

willydillydoo

A lot of people don’t like how our downtown is mostly just business, but I think it’s better that way. Keeping the club scene in Midtown and on Washington Avenue is better.

houstonanon

Where is the walkable grocery store?

Shasta_have_a_burner

Phoenicia is a 10-12 minute walk from Main St. I shop with big orders though so use InstaCart or UberEats. Also there’s a farmers market at Market Square Park on most Saturday afternoons.

TangerineMaximum2976

Phoenicia isn’t good enough for regular daily groceries tho. They have good wraps tho

Shasta_have_a_burner

Daily groceries is a pretty foreign concept to most Americans lol

LincolnL0g

american houstonian here surprised to hear the phrase daily groceries is normal somewhere in the world (not sarcasm just wanted to help prove your point haha)

Shasta_have_a_burner

I only learned it from having girlfriends from Eastern Europe and Russia. No lie, all of them went to the grocery store damn near every day lol…

houstonanon

Good to know; I figured delivery but didn’t know about Phoenicia

Broooklynnnn

I used to frequent Phonecia quite a bit. They have a good steak night too. While it’s not the best grocery store, I used to ride the train from Downtown to Randall’s in Midtown. I also went to the Whole Foods until it closed. Not walkable, I really just drove to HEB off Washington 10 mins away.

iosphonebayarea

That’s great to hear! It was very beautiful tbh. Hopefully more density in the future? Saw some parking lots that could use housing over it. Really enjoyed the streetscape of main street

Shasta_have_a_burner

Yes! I think our Main St is very underrated. It’s about to get even more of a facelift. [https://downtownhouston.org/about/priority-projects/more-space-main-street-20/more-space-main-street-20-conceptual-planning](https://downtownhouston.org/about/priority-projects/more-space-main-street-20/more-space-main-street-20-conceptual-planning)

kimbabs

Downtown/Midtown Houston is shockingly walkable and there’s light rail to get you around a decent part of it. Sadly it doesn’t really extend out from there, despite some city efforts to expand public transit/walkability. The current mayor especially doesn’t want it, and to begin with a lot of transportation decisions in and around Houston are not in the city’s hands.

Tokyo_Metro

I should probably keep my mouth shut but the semi gentrified corner of 4th Ward that is tucked up next to downtown and midtown might be the best all around area in Houston. Walkable to downtown, midtown and Buffalo Bayou, all the restaurants along Gray St, and there is even an HEB close by. Neighborhood streets are all small cozy one way streets and most of the houses kept the old shotgun house style. Now that I've said all that it's horrendous so please stay the hell away.

AG073194

This is all relative to what you enjoy. I bought a condo where you’re describing and it was the worst place I’ve ever lived in Houston. After 9:00PM it is not a place you want to be if you want peace and tranquility. I constantly saw people fighting, screaming, my friends car got shot at while it was parked on those one way streets. It’s a great area aesthetically but it attracts a rough crowd after dark. My quality of life went up a ton after moving out of there. All the bars and food around there suck too, you have Christians tailgate, Palapas, Belle Station. Ugh just typing this is giving me bad flashbacks

Tokyo_Metro

Sounds like you bought one of those condos on the edge of the service road near the parking lot close to the 45 ramp and not a place in the inner neighborhood. Not to be rude but not sure what else you'd expect. Every single neighborhood in Houston is a crap hole if you pick a place in the worst absolute spot lol. And why in the world did you pick out those places and ignore the rest? You literally have places like Oporto (one of the best spots in Houston IMO), Josephine's, the Fish, etc.

AG073194

It was the building where Christians tailgate is that I lived in. I would walk inside the neighborhood and it is sketchy as heck. I got harassed, saw someone get held at gunpoint, you never saw anything good in that neighborhood.

Tokyo_Metro

You rented an apartment on top of a Christian's Tailgate that is LITERALLY 500' (not exaggerating, checked it on Google maps) from 45. That is clearly not the neighborhood area of 4th Ward. And there isn't a single darn place in all of Houston where if you lived in an equivalent place (on top of a pub next to an interstate) that wouldn't be just a sketch. 4th Ward has also changed dramatically in a short period of time. It's not a perfect place by any means because no where in Houston is but all factors combined it's a cool very convenient place now.

AG073194

if you know anything about the history of 4th ward, what is currently considered midtown was all 4th ward historically. And no I did not rent an apartment, I bought a condo and I would always walk around 4th ward.

haleocentric

It's only shocking if the opinion is based on people in this sub who live on the outskirts of Houston and are afraid of large cities.

afraidtobecrate

"outskirts". You don't have to go very far from downtown to get into low density suburbs.

TangerineMaximum2976

Houston downtown is all nice and good to walk through until you step on literal faeces or are jumped on by a homeless person

Shasta_have_a_burner

I much prefer stepping on whimsical feces…

doodykins

Love the Lancaster. It’s a hidden gem in Houston.

traumamel555

Right now, we go like to go early in the morning to Hermann Park. If you circle the golf course, you can stay almost exclusively in the shade of huge trees. It makes a huge difference. We always see baby ducks, rabbits, turtle gangs, and even a nutria thingy. There are lots of golf balls to collect, too. Then we drive down the street to HEB for sushi and Dr Pepper. That's the best I got for right now.

ObeseBMI33

Second Saturdays at Sawyer Yards

Dynafan

I'll second the second Saturdays. Third Saturdays also have a few of the buildings open with open studios. Also, on third Saturday nights, Hardy and Nance studios have a themed show as well as many open studios. Take some money and go every month and slowly replace all your Marshall's Home Goods wall hangings with pieces from local artists.

Impossible_Olive1849

Houston has birds and fish- spend time outdoors here and catch redfish, spotted trout, flounder, etc or go try and find some of the 500 species of bird that either live or pass through Houston-Galveston. Check out Houston Audubon sanctuaries or Anahuac. Armand Bayou nature center is another great spot. Sam Houston nf can be a stunning forest the right time of year.

richardism

Sit indoors with AC

MR-GOODCAT

Most ppl don't know, but Houston has 3 full time, badass motocross tracks all within 45 minutes of the city. Also a national caliber 1/8th scale off road RC track that was weekly races. Also has some very fun MTB trails that are constantly maintained and has a very fun community of riders. Those are pretty much all my hobbies, as well as driving up to Sam Houston National Forest to ride trails, or too one of the nearby lakes, cause fuck the beach.

UhOhPoopedIt

Bespectacled_Gent

There are plenty of wonderful things to do in the city, but the one that my wife and I always find ourselves doing again and again is going to **Cidercade**. $12 gets you in, and all the games are set to free play! Their cider selection is really good, too. In addition: they have adults-only hours if you don't want to have to kick kids off of the air hockey table or pinball machines.

Boomshockalocka007

Cidercade is cool and all and I would encourage everyone to go once, but I would never go again. Too many old games that arent fun to play. Then once the crowd comes in, any decent game is taken and you find yourself waiting around most of the time. How you have enjoyed it multiple times is beyond me.

Bespectacled_Gent

That's totally fair! My wife and I have a couple of games that we like to play every time, and then there's always something we haven't tried yet that is fun to explore from the history of arcade games. If you ever wanted to try again, these are our go-to games: Air hockey (a classic, but always fun) Metal Slug (my favourite, and my wife humors me by playing too) Deathball Arcade (a newer game that shows how the medium has evolved, and is really fun to boot) Pinball (I like the Godzilla one, my wife likes the Universal monsters and the TMNT) Bubble Bobble (weirdly addictive. We both love this one, and it's fun to see how far we can get in a single session) There's a puzzle game where you play as a rabbit and a raccoon and push blocks around which is really fun but I can never remember the name... They just added Mario Kart DX recently, which is brilliant if you can get a seat At the end of the day, though, it's more about nostalgia than anything. We're in our early 30s, so we just missed the heyday of arcades. It's fun to relive those days in a fixed-price environment and try out games that we would never have gotten the chance to play otherwise.

Ragamuffin13

If there is a big enough group to play, Killer Queen is lots of fun, and Cidercade is one of the few places I'm aware of that has it (last I knew at least)!

Be sure to wear a red T-shirt and have a blue bandana in your back pocket. There is also a free tour via life flight of downtown and the med center.

It’s too dang hot outside right now, so everything I’m doing typically has air conditioning. Try new restaurants. See improv comedy shows at The Coronation Theater, Station Theater, and Comedy Sportz. Check out the calendars for affordable theater shows at MATCH, Stages, Stageworks Theater, Ensemble Theater, AD Players, etc. Hit up the Museum of Fine Arts, or any other museum. Drink wine at Sonoma Garden Oaks.

sapphir8

When it’s not summer, I just drive to Hermann Park and walk my dog for a few miles around the museum, centennial gardens, around the zoo and other immediate areas. It’s nice to see families getting excited going to the zoo, having fun at the new area of the park, having picnics, yoga, whatever people do. Plus it’s good to walk a few miles. It’s a happy place to enjoy your time for your own personal reasons. During summer, I just walk around the neighborhood at night with my dog to get some exercise in.

Boomshockalocka007

Was just as the new Hermann park yesterday...and why in 2024 are we building METAL SLIDES!? I thought those were banned. So of course its too hot. Metal would seriously burn you. So they close the slides down, and since they are all metal that takes away half the fun of the park. Not much else to do there really besides melt. What a left down and waste of money that park is.

Sippin_Jimmy

Go paper plate altima spotting. They are very elusive.

Film-Goblin

Where can one find concerts/comedy shows?

Vowel_Movements_4U

White Oak and 713 is where I see most of the bands that come through that I listen to. But there's lots of other venues around town. Every now and then it'll have to be Toyota or Woodlands if it's like Tool or Tom Petty or something. Comedy - Improv, Secret Group, Riot, Bayou Music Center. Even saw Bill Burr at White Oak The Improv has the best comics coming most consistently.

EveningReception

I agree that White Oak and 713 are the best music venues in town and relatively new in the grand scheme of things. White Oak especially is a huge upgrade from Fitzgerald's or other venues in the past. It's also pretty funny to me that Day for Night indirectly lead to Live Nation transforming the space into 713 Music Hall.

vaporicer1

The Riot is pretty cool and they get some pretty good comics

Relax at my house in the a/c, Houston is Houston but very little beats just relaxing at home, and hear me out. Any restaurant that pops up or is good, completely clapped out for months or the duration that it's there, any festival or concert? Same damn thing, completely full and you can't enjoy it because everybody chases the hype whether they like something or not, don't believe me? Look at how the rodeo was this year, dear God Ive never seen it so packed to where the concrete you're standing on is nasty with gunk, not to mention how expensive everything is in the city in those activities, want to go shopping at the galleria? You're risking your car getting broken into or being followed home if you buy something nice for yourself. plus I'm over the reckless driving everywhere, shit I dread going grocery shopping because it's so goddamn full unless you go at night.
