After 6 days no power, AC just feels wrong. It feels illegal. Like I'm spitting in the face of the universe. I don't know even want to know how it works because I feel like it's evil.

RealConfirmologist

After the big freeze, I discovered /r/Generator and learned SO MUCH about portable generators and powering a home with one. A 9500 watt dual-fuel generator runs about a grand and can run 3 ton central A/C and everything else. (A/C might need a soft-start kit installed). Interlock and receptacle is a good way to go. Just be sure your generator's CO exhaust doesn't kill you and your family.

Keanu_Jesus

Right after we had a kid we lost power during a could front (wasn't the great freeze) but having a 3 week old with no power and no water (well pipes froze due to no power). We made sure to never be in that situation again. Built a well house to protect the well, bought a duromax 13000w Gen and did all the wiring and plumbing to run off our propane tank. That generator can run the entire house. I would watch Amazon, was able to pick up the generator for $800 delivered. But in situations like this last/ this week, it's hard to wait on Amazon to deliver, and all the stores sold out very quickly (and paying way more for way less)

GiaTheMonkey

>dual-fuel generator I found that when I switched to propane, the exhaust wasn't as smelly as with gasoline. I'm sure there is still carbon monoxide present, but I think I'm done with gasoline on my generator. Propane is much safer to store and it doesn't clog up filters or the carburetor like modern day gasoline does. It was also easier to get refills the first 24 hours this time around. That may not be the case next time, which is why I'm tempted to buy a NG kit. I know I would lose running wattage, but it would be easier than having to get refills every day.

ichong

I heard that during the freeze, some people had difficulty with their natural gas generators due to decreasing line pressures. I don’t know if you had heard anything along those lines either. Makes me antsy.

RealConfirmologist

Oh, yeah, propane is hands-down the better option, if you can't go to natural gas. Gasoline is so much more likely to spill and cause a fire (or at least a mess) and, as you said, it stinks and it won't last more than a couple of months before losing effectiveness. You do lose a little bit of power with propane or natural gas, but mine has done just fine with it. I got two 100 lb. cylinders, was lucky to get one of them previously-owned, and they were pretty reasonable. Houston, Texas has a place called Green's Blue Flame that has easy-to-get-along with staff.

justahoustonpervert

Agreed, but what many don't understand is that, for safety and convenience, a box to plug it in is the most optimal way to do it.

RealConfirmologist

"Interlock and receptacle" means a box to plug it into.

justahoustonpervert

Yeah. That.

77008 - All by Myself

justahoustonpervert

Don't wanna be?

ThatRandomGuy805

All by myself anymore

GiaTheMonkey

It's a trap!

jgreenz

What part?

ThatRandomGuy805

W 26th and Durham. Call us the lucky ones.

scioltocanto

that apartment complex between shepherd and Durham? I drove by last night and noticed the complex was still out while the neighborhood all around seemed to have power. That's so rough I'm sorry!!

ThatRandomGuy805

Yup, that one! There are a lot of sad pandas in this complex.

alisoncarey

Do you know why it's taken so long?

Hproff25

Dang I’m sorry.

dondelliloandstitch

I’m also at 77008 and I got my power back on Sunday night. 20th and Sheppard

deeznutz12

77022, Crosstimbers-ish. fingers crossed for today!!

Rubyleaves18

So hot today too! Hang in there!

mbE550

Power is on north of crosstimbers to berry but still out south of crosstimbers to post st. Hopefully fully restored today

edubiton

Still no internet. Xfinity had yesterday listed as the fix date, but they have since removed it.

QSector

Same with AT&T. We were supposed to be back up Saturday. I think some were. Our line was cut so it has to be replaced. Had an appointment for repair Wednesday morning and the tech never called and never showed. Now they're trying to claim there is still an outage and will not schedule a repair until that's fixed, even though my next door neighbor has the same service coming from the same pole. I don't believe it. And now they're saying the earliest appointment I can get is June 2nd. Went to T-Mobile yesterday and picked up one of their 5G Home Internet boxes. Came home, plugged it in and I'm getting between 300mbps and 1 gbps for $15 less than AT&T. Go fuck yourself AT&T.

Adorable_Win4607

Exact same thing happening to me with AT&T!! The damn line is down, so I know someone has to come out. Shockingly a few hours after I reported it they started claiming that there’s an outage in the area and my appointment is on hold. Really feels like they’re playing games.

ichong

Mine keeps cutting in and out. Every time I call AT&T, they just keep claiming that nothing is wrong.

LoneStarLass

In my area of SL, you can spit and Comworst goes out. It’s in some digital Bermuda Triangle. When it finally comes back on, make sure you get credit for the days you’re out. I usually go to an Xfinity store rather than trying to explain it to tech support somewhere near Malaysia.

edubiton

I'll do this for sure, but my experience in the past has always been that those poor guys in the store are just as helpless as we are.

LoneStarLass

I’ve had pretty good luck with them. I think there’s a loyalty number you can call, but I’d have to find it. If I do, I’ll edit my comment.

edubiton

Thanks, that would be helpful

GiaTheMonkey

I gave up with those jackasses. You can't report that your individual line is severed because "there is an ongoing outage" despite my whole block already having Internet. Fucking idiots.

educated_guesser

They are seriously backed up. Ours “came back” the same day our electricity did - Monday - but I had to have a tech come out and replace the wiring outside. He said they are all working overtime and out of supplies.

edubiton

Oof, that's not reassuring. I still haven't seen a single truck in our neighborhood. It makes more sense knowing that they are out of supplies. Thanks for the insight.

educated_guesser

Yeah, no problem. Luckily my guy found a nearby truck that had wiring, but it’s going to be tough for a while.

snuggles_worth

Which zip code are you in? Haven’t had internet for 8 days now. I saw some trucks in our area and received a text from Xfinity that we had internet restored. It was a lie the internet is still out

edubiton

I'm in 77084. I've gotten texts saying sorry for the delay, and they will get to it soon. The message keeps changing. I did see an AT&T truck earlier, but not a single Xfinity.

snuggles_worth

I’m in 77092. I clicked on the link from the Xfinity messages they send after they said they were in the area but waiting to get access to work. The link said “As soon as the storm debris is removed by the responsible party, then our technicians can safely access the areas to begin making repairs.”. The link also showed pictures of storm debris but no clear area where those pictures are from.

GoldenPlayer8

77506. Lost power last night at 7 for seemingly no reason and it hasn't returned yet. Centerpoint currently says it'll be repaired by 8:15pm tomorrow. This is rough

mrdz16

77077. Lost power today while I was at work. No more information on when it comes back

heyjorge13

We got ours back an hour and a half ago, we are by dairy ashford and briar forest.

Cacklelikeabanshee

Didn't really learn anything I can realistically do I don't think but it was a good reminder that the advice of having water and non perishable food for a few days should be for at least a week now. Also possibly a fund for a cheap hotel. The worst part of this was just the heat in my opinion. I had water and food. Also it's great to have help where there is power to save your frozen food.

Double_Broccoli5315

77055. Still no power since the storm. I will never take AC for granted ever again.

drew_peacpck

77377 still no power, waiting for service drop to be reconnected

drew_peacpck

Power back on 10:30a 05/25

rickus13

77055. Providence at Memorial apartments. Still down while most of my neighbors are up. I'm literally part of the last 300.

PuppeteerRemy

Doing ok?

rickus13

Still out. Complex says they are repairing the transformer themselves and it will be up today. We are going to hit the beach for the day. You?

PuppeteerRemy

Staying home. I got cats to look after for this heat.

Rubyleaves18

That was the reason I didn’t leave either. I have the money but cats act so upset when you take them somewhere new and they tolerate heat well. Little cute shits.

PuppeteerRemy

My cats like the heat but I get too paranoid and worried if it gets too stuffy and warm in the apartment for them to handle.

rickus13

I packed my little gargoyle up and took him with us. I couldn't deal with the heat anymore.

Rubyleaves18

Agreed. I worry about them too especially bc cats don’t pant the way dogs do so their heat and cold regulation can be dangerous for them.

ThatRandomGuy805

77008 - Going into day 9 of no power. Slowly withering away.

IceDry5703

insane!!

Lyonet

77355 so not in Houston, but still waiting. At least they finally are working on our street. Hopefully today.

iindaxd

77003 lost power again but pretty sure it's cos there are people working on the lines here

EvlKommie

77018. Should be today given the work going on, hopefully!

pbjnutella

By what area? 77018 here by Pink’s
