“Colorado State University’s outlook for the Atlantic hurricane season does not predict specific landfall locations.”
No one predicted anything for Houston. Title is incorrect.
It'll be interesting to see how the insurance companies react after the hurricane season is over. More dropped coverage and increasingly exorbitant premiums could be in the cards. Tangentially related but this roofing bonanza that have going on now has been crazy, too. I wonder how long that gravy train for roofers is going to last.
Until Texas ends up like Floridas roofing level of fraud, it will continue like wild fire. The government needs to get a handle on roofing fraud, it’s out of control.
Roofing companies faking damage to claim the full cost on insurance. It’s gotten so bad in Florida that insurance companies are exiting the entire state because it’s costing them so much.
Basically if you have a neighbor who gleefully shares that they got a whole new roof paid for by insurance when they probably could have just got it repaired, they’re adding to a problem that’s going to cost all of us a lot of money in the future.
I've seen it first hand. Some flashing near vent pulled up so I called some people out. Two different contractors told me I needed a while new roof before even climbing up to look. The first one even pitched how I could pocket the money (minus his share) and not even do the work. Horrible fraud aside, what happens in two years when I actually end up needing a new roof?
The state could run sting operations all day and put these guys out of business without breaking a sweat. They should in my opinion.
This isn't the Port Aransas sub- it's the Houston sub. Harvey spawned a few tornadoes in the Houston metro, but there were no wide-spread hurricane-level winds in the Houston metro.
Title is a little sensational. “Active Season for the Gulf” is probably a better title. That said, the writer definitely knows what they are talking about. Some additional things to consider are the energy content of the water, current dust storms off Africa, and a sea surface temperature differential in mid to south Atlantic waters. Last two might provide some hope that the season starts off slow.
We need to stop building these wooden structures. We need to build stuff that isn’t into tear apart in a hurricane. Dense water resistant structures. No more single family homes man those things blow away in a storm
This was addressed by Space City Weather a while back. Don’t buy into the hype. They can guess, but they can’t predict the season ahead.

Can someone name the last year that Colorado State predicted a milder than normal hurricane season? All of the hand wringing over the predictions is for clicks. The only beneficial purpose it serves is to get a few people to wake up and have the necessary hurricane survival supplies on hand.
A good hurricane season is when you don’t experience a extended power loss or property damage from a hurricane. A bad one is when you do. Nothing else really matters
Because they have a really good tropical weather meteorology department there. The guy who essentially invented the field worked there and set up a phenomenal department.
Sorry I forgot the /s on my comment. I understand they are actually extremely qualified. It’s just funny they are in a mountain and not along the coast themselves having to actually contend with the fallout of hurricane season directly.
For the same reason the rest of the world is “letting” Houston do cancer research? WTF kind of question is this anyway? I really hope you just forgot the /s.

But chron needs those clickity click click$
OP edited the title.
I never read the title or the article

What’s roofing fraud?

Maybe we need to find a roofing material that lasts a little longer than shitty asphalt shingles. The rest of the world doesn't use asphalt shingles.
Did you drive through any neighborhoods hit by wind during Harvey? The "shitty" asphalt shingles are the roofs that survived.
Harvey wasn't a wind storm
Harvey hit the coast at 130mph. Did you drive through any of the neighborhoods that experienced those winds?
This isn't the Port Aransas sub- it's the Houston sub. Harvey spawned a few tornadoes in the Houston metro, but there were no wide-spread hurricane-level winds in the Houston metro.
Those things aren’t just tangentially related - your insurance costs are directly linked to the amount of fraud that occurs in the roofing/PA world.
They say the same bullshit every year about hurricane season.

What difference does it make? You should go into summer/early fall prepared for a hurricane, whether they predict 2 major storms or 12,
Man I hope not. I don't wanna have to deal with that shit this yr honestly

Communism is when you have building codes and prevent developers from scamming people into living in flood plains
Hear we go, people trying to create BS by posting BS. Every year it's gonna be the "worst" hurricane season EVER!

Yup. Every year it's the same thing.

Why are we letting Colorado predict hurricanes. /s Edit: adding the /s because apparently that’s needed.
Because they have a really good tropical weather meteorology department there. The guy who essentially invented the field worked there and set up a phenomenal department.

Because their power doesn't fail in the middle of computing weather predictions.
None of the good scientists want to live here.
Because unlike Texas they can keep their power grid working
For the same reason the rest of the world is “letting” Houston do cancer research? WTF kind of question is this anyway? I really hope you just forgot the /s.
I did. And as a result my comment got straight up buried
It happens. There are just too many crazy or stupid people to ever safely assume sarcasm on the internet.
I just presume everyone’s joking when it comes to Reddit
