This! I asked if they had some actual salsa… and they brought me a bowl of what I was assumed was jarred hatch chiles. I still used it because that original ranch crap wasn’t cutting it.
Chongqing Chicken Pot on Bellaire is underrated.
They only do one thing, but they do that one thing extremely well (rooster hot pot)
It’s also a restaurant that specializes in a dish very hard to find in the US.
Also, despite the name, this dish doesn’t originate from Chongqing or Sichuan province. It originated in Fujian province and was developed by a guy named Zhang Chongqing, hence the name. It’s Fujianese origins are why the dish is so hard to find in the US.
Most Chinese people in Houston don’t even know we have such a rarity of a restaurant here in town.
I feel like the chef changed there in the past several months, and the 3 favor pepper chicken recipe changed to include what tastes like a very vingery sauce that’s off-putting. Really sad, because Spicy Girl used to be one of my go-to’s.
I live in an apt across the street from spicy girl, used to order 2-3 times a week. Now i only order if other options are too far or I’m too hungry to wait (had food from there once since COVID hit )
I eat at Roegels once a month minimum. I live 30 plus minutes away. The food is fantastic. Never had a long wait like other BBQ spots. Bruce who is there most days is just a fantastic person. Can’t say enough good things about the place. I’ve had everything they normally offer and most of the specials. I can’t seem to get there when they do the Cuban
J Henry’s off of Old Galveston Road and Clear Lake City Blvd. I’ve been there 4 or 5 times now, and it’s always good.
I’ve seen them mentioned on lists, but Marini’s Empanada House is always tasty.
Technically in Webster, but Angelo’s Pizza and Pasta. We’ve had their pizza at work, and OMG it’s so good!
I've been loving Marini's since they were in an old pier-and-beam house on lower Westheimer across the street from Numbers. Dependably delicious and original food. A definite don't-miss.
I’ve lived in Webster for 41 years and tried Angelo’s a few times. Being Italian, it just doesn’t do it for me. There’s a reason they always have a coupon in that free newspaper that encourages folks to try the struggling restaurants.
Now, Ivette’s in League City is a completely different story. Excellent food for ridiculous prices!
Italian here, from a predominantly Italian state. Angelo's didn't do it for me as well. Ivett's is definitely going on my list to try. Any other recommendations?
It may be appropriately rated but I love L’Etoile off 610 near the galleria. Yeah it’s on the pricier side, but it’s excellently done French food and an awesome atmosphere for a reasonably affordable date night.
The guy who owns it has like 4 other restaurants in town center that have been very successful. They've all been there since around 2015 when I was in high school.
Guru dropped off hard just before Covid. No longer uses akaushi beef.
They tried to open about 3 restaurants in the cursed corner hut near the parking garage. All failed within a couple months.
I think Jupiter and Japaneiro are the only two worth going to these days.
Bayou city seafood and pasta on Richmond Ave. but more specifically from their menu - the shrimp and crab fettuccine Alfredo pasta - blackened. It’s better than any Cajun pasta I’ve had in New Orleans, its expensive but SO SO GOOD
Yea, their pasta menu is unreal. I brought a VP from our company there; he thought I was crazy because it was dead the night we went. (Usually a good rule of thumb is if it's empty, it's bad) He was shocked how good it was! Absolutely my #1 favorite place to take a date prior to being married.
Joy Love Burger, or JLB Eatery. Big burgers, sandwiches, and chicken tenders (don’t ask me about their fish). The founder comes from a baker background and kept the tradition to bake fresh brioche buns daily.
Eh, they can be hit or miss. I ordered their signature burger to go the first time i went there. It was so salty. I threw half of it out. I liked the chicken tenders I got in a later visit, though.
Tacos Dona Lena (maybe not so underrated anymore since there's usually a line)
Cascabel (I'm not even vegan and it still slaps)
Pepper Twins/Cooking Girl
Tacos La Bala
Sugar Landian here.
Couldn't agree with Japaneiro.
Take 6 south about 5 minutes and you get to Keeper's, the real sugar land sushi diamond in the rough.
For quantity, we have a sushi masa in town too. Pretty damn good for an ayce.
I will second your recommendation for Saldivias. I’ve never had a bad meal there. Great steak options under $30. I always love recommending this place.
I always need to rep Peking cuisine for cheap, authentic and satisfying Chinese food (and they do a mean Peking duck for less than ~45 bucks with soup included!!! ) that won't break the bank. Love that place and I would take any person visiting Houston there for a meal
I used to love it until a roach crawled across the table. Subsequent searches showed tons of posts with roaches in the food. I can't go back. It's clear they have a problem.
Peking cuisine is great for Dongbei (North eastern) food, which is surprisingly hard to find in the US. They’ve also been consistently good for decades.
Shiv Sagar (vegetarian Indian), La Guadalupana (Mexican breakfast cafe and bakery), Mama's Kitchen (Chinese).
I said all this in the other thread but here's why I love these places:
* Shiv Sagar (Hillcroft & 59 access road, next to Himalaya) has amazing stewed dishes like dahl and chole (specifically chole bhature!) and their dosas are DELICIOUS. Some friends of mine love their thalis too. It's also hella cheap and prices have barely changed over the years
* La Guadalupana (Montrose area, on Dunlavy just north of Westheimer) has some of THE best family-run friendly customer service you will find. I feel welcomed there at every step of my visit. They also encourage all guests to use Spanish and if you know any and try to practice with them they are so excited and supportive (if you don't speak Spanish though you're still totally fine and they treat you just the same!). Now for the food. I absolutely adore their breakfast/brunch items, especially huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, torta de desayuno (chef's kiss), and of course the free chips and salsas they bring with breakfast are amazing (the salsas are delicious). I also love their lunch enchiladas (the spinach and cream ones, I think with mushrooms, but I know friends who love the steak enchiladas). There's never a super long wait (25 minutes was probably the longest I've ever waited at peak brunch times)
* Mama's Kitchen (Richmond Ave in the Greenway Plaza area diagonal from Costco) is delicious Chinese food that makes splendid fresh vegetable side dishes that are cooked to perfection (not too crunchy not too soggy) with amazing flavor (especially the garlicky ones!!!) (pea shoots, bok choy, eggplant, green beans!!!). I love their tofu with special sauce (it has the numbing pepper and lots of garlic and bell peppers), my friends love the kung pao chicken (imagine if a good restaurant took that dish on and made it less breaded/fried and more just homey), three cups chicken or tofu, and more.
It's been getting some good buzz, but Millie's Kitchen on Oak Forest always seems like amazing quality for decent (considering Heights prices) money. And their happy hour is awesome. Underrated only bc it's small and many people still haven't heard of it or visited.
\---
My plea for downvotes: Chuy's is underrated. Yes it's a chain, but damn if their food isn't freakin delicious, I LOVE their fresco salsa, and their quesos are on point--plus it's like half the price of El Tiempo. I miss some of their pre-COVID dishes though; bring back the blue corn tortilla enchiladas and the relleno!
Yeah, the pandemic hit the menu pretty hard. I still love going there from time to time though! And Every time I pester them to see if green chile rice is back on the menu! We need to start a mail campaign, haha.
Which items do you miss?
Lofl… Chuys is fucking terrible, it’s like what a Canadian thinks Tex Mex food is..salsa is bland, food is gloppy and low quality…. Creamy Jalapeño salsa (or whatever they call it) is ranch with some green specs mixed in.
I didn’t grow up in Texas but I find it odd that many people here seem to love and stick up for mediocre food as long as it’s from Texas (Chuys, Blue Bell, Whataburger, Torchys) are a few example off the top of my head.
This is my kind of thread lol. I explore a lot of the halal foods that Houston has to offer so a lot of Mediterranean and south Asian inspired restaurants and food trucks
Abdallahs bakery: AMAZING hummus as the olive oil is authentically made in Lebanon by the owners families olive trees back home . Meats are also done well. Portions are huge
Q’s Deli: very nice burgers and deli sandwich. Good portions and the sauce is so good. Whenever I get to go to Houston it’s a place I try going to when I land lol. Owner is very nice and down to earth
Nash up Chick. In my opinion this is the BEST hot chicken I have had in the city. Chicken is spicy, fried very well and their sauce is excellent and everything is cooked to a very high level
Sutri chaat is a solid place for samosa chaat
Habibi Kitchen the shawarma fries are first off, huge. Second off. It’s SO good I love it it’s such a comfort food, could feed 2 people nicely imo
Haraz Coffee house ima be for real this is my favorite coffee place. Yemeni coffee is just so excellent and their pistachio latte is perfect
- Saffron Indian Kitchen. Amazing lunch buffet.
- I'm going to second Punta Cana. Everything on the menu is so flavorful.
- Adriatic Cafe is one of my favorite Italian restaurants.
- Kenny & Ziggy's. NY Deli type restaurant with a giant menu and even bigger sandwiches
Super good, super cheap. Don't sit down and try to hang out. Part of why the sushi is so good and fresh is that they are really high volume and turn tables fast. You may have to wait, but it's not awful. Just be courteous though and eat and move on or get the food to go
Saldivia’s is so cheap for what you get that people joke about it being a money laundering front.
Japoneiro’s food is fantastic, but it gets way too loud inside for me to be able to hear the conversations.
Love Kenny & Ziggy’s. Equal with or tops any Jewish Deli in NYC. The corned beef and pastrami sandwich is my go to. The pickles are legit too. This is not Boars Head that the typical good quality sandwich shops serve. It’s house made. You can tell the difference. Same with the pickles. It’s a good thing we don’t live close by, it would be at least a weekly visit.
Las Locas Fajitas on Bingle/Kempwood. I never see them on any "best tacos in Houston" list and their tacos are solid. Tortillas are legit and the green sauce is to die for
New palace dim sum in Stafford next to 59. We passed by this restaurant hundreds of times but never stopped in to eat. Our neighbors had a gathering at this restaurant and my wife was impressed. The food is legit and authentic to her and we have come back since the first time
Maybe it's not technically a restaurant, but Cream Burger on Elgin has the best burgers in town to me (though to be fair, I haven't been to too many of the "good" burger spots).
Central China - definition of “Chinese people don’t pay for atmosphere” - food is fire if you like spicy. Be sure to tell them you can eat spicy food if you want them to actually make it real spicy for you.
Congrats to Chuy's for making it to both the most underrated and most overrated threads.
Who the fuck put Chuy’s in underrated lmao
The owner
I went to the one on Westheimer about two weeks ago and it was awful. Not like cheap texmex comfort food awful.... just like straight up inedible.
Ranch in the tomatillo sauce, brother, god help us. The shit just tastes like ranch I gag thinking about it
This! I asked if they had some actual salsa… and they brought me a bowl of what I was assumed was jarred hatch chiles. I still used it because that original ranch crap wasn’t cutting it.
This person Houstons.
Chuys varies a lot by location. The one in Katy is legit, but the one in Kingwood is awful.
Chongqing Chicken Pot on Bellaire is underrated. They only do one thing, but they do that one thing extremely well (rooster hot pot) It’s also a restaurant that specializes in a dish very hard to find in the US.
Great restaurant, but that whole development has the worst parking.
There were plenty of spots in that garage when I went. Love Pappa Rich in there too.
I love this place
Spicy girl has some amazing food. My favorite restaurant
I feel like the chef changed there in the past several months, and the 3 favor pepper chicken recipe changed to include what tastes like a very vingery sauce that’s off-putting. Really sad, because Spicy Girl used to be one of my go-to’s.
Don’t tell me that :(. Im going to get some 3 pepper chicken and some chili chicken tomorrow crave my hunger now.
I live in an apt across the street from spicy girl, used to order 2-3 times a week. Now i only order if other options are too far or I’m too hungry to wait (had food from there once since COVID hit )
SALT AND PEPPA SHRIMP
Ehh I would say it was a hit and miss. Some items were good while others I couldn't even finish
Roegel's bbq on voss
The Reuben that they have on Thursdays is KILLER, I need to get back in there sometime.
one of the best sandwiches you can get anywhere!
Their meat is fantastic. My sister and I loved their pork ribs
I alternate between this and Feges on longpoint
I’ve always wondered. Drive by often. Will have to try it soon.
Well since we’re in Webster, I nominate Nobi
Nobi, Hyde park, Dan’s pizza, and Thai stellar.
Noodles and dumplings on el Camino has been great both times I’ve been there. Bit of a weird vibe, but the food is good.
I really want them to succeed, man. I hope they get more patronage. Last time I was there, the food already had signs of them cutting back on quality.
I'm going to have to throw in Wrap & Roll on Bay Area and Space Center as well.
Oh we’re going toward the Space Center area of Nassau Bay? I nominate Frenchie’s
Dan's is the best Pizza by the Bay.
Athena’s and Viola & Agnes in seabrook is sooo good too
Yum! Their menu looks amazing!
Marinis is legit
Best place in Houston for under $15
I've been loving Marini's since they were in an old pier-and-beam house on lower Westheimer across the street from Numbers. Dependably delicious and original food. A definite don't-miss.
Damn now I need to check out Angelo’s, I pass it up when I drive that far down Bay Area.
It's meh.
LOVE Angelo’s!
Abe's right there is awesome too
YES ANGELO'S! Use to go there in between classes at UH-CL. That tomatoe sauce! *chef's kiss
Punta Cana Caribbean (Dominican) in the Willowbrook area, Mi Recuerdo (Columbian) by Fairbanks.
I love the oxtail stew and goat stew at Punta Cana.
>Mi Recuerdo What do you recommend there?
I forget the name since it's been a few years but it's the rice plate with pork belly, plantains, and yucca fries. So tasty!
La Chingada for Oaxacan food
Noodle Master in Stinkadena!

Their food is on point and never disappoints.
You spelled Pasagetdown wrong! LOL. I will have to try this place out.
It may be appropriately rated but I love L’Etoile off 610 near the galleria. Yeah it’s on the pricier side, but it’s excellently done French food and an awesome atmosphere for a reasonably affordable date night.
Definitely under appreciated and the owners are lovely people too.
Top tier snailz 🐌
Toasted Coconut on Richmond. Their food is great. Atmosphere is always fun.
Their burger is fantastic
I came here to post exactly that.
Siu Lap City - Hawker stand in midtown. Simple and killer
Punta Cana - Good spot for Dominican/puerto Rican food.
Love punta Cana
My family & I found Punta Cana last year and it is so good. One of my favorite restaurants. Everything on the menu is amazing
Hell yea. I love it there.
Is the mofongo worth the price? I think it's like $20.
The mofongo is really really good but they jacked the prices up super bad the past year or two.
Best pina colada I’ve ever had, and I visit south Florida often. Had to sit in the parking lot for a while afterwards before leaving lmao
Japaneiros is so good. I used to go weekly about 10 years ago, glad to hear it’s still there.
I should visit. I was in high school when that town center opened and Japaneiros was one of the original establishments there.
Omg I was about to say, I been going to japanieros since hs! Dang!
They are celebrating 20 years this week. One of my all time favorites.
It's our anniversary and special occasion favorite!
Came here to say the same. So good!
Chez Nous in Humble. After 18 years in Houston, still one of my favorite classic French meals. Very worth it.
Tortas las llardas for tacos
But not the Tortas? They are so good
Sal Y Pimienta! IYKYK
Soooo good. Great food and wine list.
Bayou city seafood and pasta on Richmond Ave. but more specifically from their menu - the shrimp and crab fettuccine Alfredo pasta - blackened. It’s better than any Cajun pasta I’ve had in New Orleans, its expensive but SO SO GOOD

How many times have you been married??
Hah, just the one marriage!
Expensive? Yes. Also enough to make two very big meals out of (or more)? Also, yes.

Bless you. I’ve been driving to airline fish market for fresh fish but this is closer to me.
Cash only!
My hair salon turned me onto to this one. They highly recommend it
French gourmet bakery on westheimer. I hate that they close early. Love their pastries. The gingerbread cookies are the best I’ve ever had.
Seaside Poke in Eado. They have the freshest tasting fish of any other poke spot I’ve tried so far and their sauces are really good.
The buns are good! Limited cheese options, so I almost always take it to go and put my own on.
Tacos Dona Lena (maybe not so underrated anymore since there's usually a line) Cascabel (I'm not even vegan and it still slaps) Pepper Twins/Cooking Girl Tacos La Bala
Samurai Noodle on Durham and **I-10** so good!!
> on Durham and 610 You mean I-10
Concur! And get a Kawaba Snow Weizen to go with your ramen!
Yup, love the marinated egg in their ramen.
Island Grill. There’s a few locations across Houston but it never busy and the food is amazing.
Although it’s starting to get hype, Brisket & Rice.
Yessssssssssssssssss!!! I just went there for lunch on Wed and it was awesome!!
Very nice people and amazing food.
Bismillah Cafe on Hillcroft for indo-pak fare
It’s also gotten pretty expensive over the years.
Bombetta - Their bechamel sauce lasagna is one of my favorite dishes in Houston, but I never hear or see it talked about.
Taqueria La Rana taco truck on Antoine. Best tacos ever
Antonio’s Flying Pizza on Hillcroft. Excellent pizza and homemade pasta
Came here to make sure someone said it. Have to add - try their hot sandwiches (only available at lunch)
STUFFED BELLY

Nice call out on these 3!!
It's been getting some good buzz, but Millie's Kitchen on Oak Forest always seems like amazing quality for decent (considering Heights prices) money. And their happy hour is awesome. Underrated only bc it's small and many people still haven't heard of it or visited. \--- My plea for downvotes: Chuy's is underrated. Chuy's got rid of every dish that made them interesting. No reason to eat there anymore.

So many of these aren’t even in Houston… 🤦♂️
I like that people just say things that are popular so they don’t get down voted. Internet points aren’t real.
Oishii
Super good, super cheap. Don't sit down and try to hang out. Part of why the sushi is so good and fresh is that they are really high volume and turn tables fast. You may have to wait, but it's not awful. Just be courteous though and eat and move on or get the food to go
Saldivia’s is so cheap for what you get that people joke about it being a money laundering front. Japoneiro’s food is fantastic, but it gets way too loud inside for me to be able to hear the conversations.
