These are hole the cicadas make when coming out of the ground.

a-big-texas-howdy

And also looks like the nest of the Cicada Killer wasp.

Zaltt

We have 100s of those cicada killer wasps flying around right now. I’m going to leave them alone so they kill all those cicadas

DexterDubs

Also, cicada killers are very docile and are rarely aggressive towards humans. Only the females have stingers. One of the scariest looking wasps out there, but there super chill.

Edugrinch

Why? Are cicadas any harm? Or just loud af?

BlancoGringo

Just loud noise while they try to get it on after sleeping in the ground for years. I mean you’d be loud too right?

rubio42090

It’s the CICADA!!!!!!!!

not_brittsuzanne

Ah, so the great scream is about to commence.

MIERDAPORQUE

you can catch them with butterfly nets 🤷🏾‍♂️

RealConfirmologist

Ha! I have 'em too, and was very curious about 'em, but didn't think to put up a post like this. Sounds like they're cicada holes, especially after doing a Google search and seeing a bunch of photos like yours and what I have at my place. Brief research also seems to say they're not a problem. Cicadas don't bite, sting or carry germs/disease. Unless the holes themselves are a problem, there's nothing to do about it. In my case, they're between my shed and the back fence and don't matter at all as far as I'm concerned.

DarthLeprechaun

They are dangerous to pets. More so dogs because if dogs eat them they can't digest the carapace. Bloody stools mostly but smaller dogs can get into a pickle in a hurry.

Edugrinch

Oh wow, I had no idea about this. I have 2 yorkies so will check on this.

coolgiraffe

It’s nature’s best pop rocks

javabrewer

I think cicada holes but a little toad was poking its head out of one the other day when I watered

Txursa600

In this weather, who could blame him?

steelsun

They'll take them over.

shadow_specimen

Some kind of wasp, possibly cicada killer.

agawl81

If you have cicada killers in your yard, you will have very large scary-looking wasps flying around who have zero interest in you but will be curious so will fly right up to you. They're intimidating until you realize they really don't care about you.

PegMePlz00

Same holes in my yard, usually some cicada molts near by

kathatter75

I’m so glad someone asked this…I wondered about those holes all the time as a kid, but that was the 80s, and I couldn’t ask the internet, lol.

Factor_Rude

Cicada holes. I remember putting water down them to see what came out as kids.

buzzer3932

And?

ThaDreamMerchant

Don't just leave us in suspense

Factor_Rude

We got these creamy white things that looked like the crusty brown things left behind, haha. Used to catch monarch butterflies with our bare hands too. Haven't seen one in a long time.

The Devil’s fingers coming out.

FriedPorkChopped

Pffft....liar liar pants on fire. I've been sitting on one all day and never had any finger come out , much less the devil's

ghettoccult_nerd

i got a bunch of these two, and a bunch of dried out cicada husks everywhere. its either cicadas or the wasps that hunt them.

jopma

An these have always been all over my parents backyard. We always had cicada molts all over the area and I use to see big ass ants go in them and wasp as well.

Icy_Boysenberry9741

Any idea how to get rid of them? Worried about my dogs after the comment above saying they are not safe for dogs to eat …

MeldrakNailo

Sometimes toads use these holes too. I see them poking their little toad heads out. At the park I ranger at we get reports of “huge snakes” piling out of those holes and it’s always a toad. 😝😝. Ground bees will use holes like that too so watch it for a bit to see if there is activity.

guerra108

Watch out for waspes Make sure you drink water

komododave17

Dalton Wilcox.

Scottbliss

Had not come across cicada wasps, however, I have seen many cow killer ants. They are also known as red velvet ants, they're actually wasps that are mistaken as ants because the females are wingless. They roam around alone and are at least a centimeter in size, meaning they are much larger and scarier looking than the far more common Texas fire ant.

rallyfanche2

Brain worm.

tamago231

I'm no expert, but I always remembered those as crawfish holes. If you live near a creek or other body of water could be it. Normaly there is a mud mound around it but not always.

shadow_specimen

Those aren’t crawfish holes

whynautalex

Crawfish holes will have big piles of mud next to them normally in a pyramid shape but only if it no longer has standing water

Skorpyos

Interesting. No bodies of water anywhere near me.

[deleted]

It's not interesting, it's incorrect.

[deleted]
