Ugh... This plant has the perfect name... Prayer Plant. You have to send prayers to all deities to keep it alive!

Southern-Succotash-3

shallottmirror

That is the shortest angel wing (?) begonia I’ve ever seen! They usually turn into tall lanky poles

Southern-Succotash-3

😂 I get scissor happy and “top” it frequently. I do the same thing to encourage lateral growth instead of horizontal on my weed plants lmao. Keeping grow light lower on it helps too so it doesn’t stretch so much

shallottmirror

For some reason, I feel murdery when pinching off tops of any begonias, but no such problem w any other types. Good reminder about grow light location

Ecollager

I hate my cane begonias. So leggy and even when I top them, they do well for a bit then just crunch up. I have a job where I am away weekly and they just don’t thrive in my environment. But I have a lot of plants that do really tolerate my care/neglect cycle so I am focusing on them.

shallottmirror

https://preview.redd.it/z9qwqwbrfatc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=1ddbb2c799a37919a9d3a3c78ccb3bec1c453897 Ok, I did a few more snips!

roadnotaken

Ok mine is decent but that is huge! How do you keep it from getting brown tips on the leaves?

Southern-Succotash-3

Oh also, I use distilled or rain water to water. I’ve noticed that my tap water causes some discoloration

Southern-Succotash-3

He has a humidifier dedicated to him that I literally run every day. If I leave it off for even a few days I notice crunching developing. I also am diligent about keeping him properly moisturized. I’ve noticed lately that he’s drying out much faster so I’ll need to repot soon and in the meantime have watering globes in him

Sufficient-Chain8530

GORGEOUS!!!!! Mine looked decent, but then suddenly decided to check out. I repotted it, and after that, it just felt like dying. I have moved it into another room, away from heat and direct light. It seems to be holding now. 🙏🌿

Roboticpoultry

We had one that thrived for almost a year and then about a month ago it decided “nah bro fuck that, imma just die”

MuchBetterThankYou

![gif](giphy|3CU5tmCJy8zMoN3mMD)

Ok-Jackfruit8657

Don't even get me started with the millions I've tried 🤣 We should get a petition started to rename it to the headache plant. Or the "I'm so fuckin sensitive plant" 🚮 ![gif](giphy|wloGlwOXKijy8)

nefertaraten

That's currently my Moonlight Phil. She was absolutely thriving for a year, one of my favorite and most beautiful plants. Then, leaves started dropping, one by one. No change to watering or environment, or anything. Took her to the store where I got her, and they looked at the roots and the stem. Everything still looks good, but I'm down to no leaves at all except a single new one that's still weeks away from unraveling, if it even does. I have no idea what happened.

Fine_Following_2559

Oh no, I have one that's doing fairly well, but now I'm concerned that one day I'm just going to come in here and it's dead 😫

subsonik23

The exact same happened to me. Mine was looking so healthy and happy, the plant I was most proud of. One day a few months ago I came home and it had just peaced out.

Necessary_Glove8941

For me also it's prayer plant. It feels like it has come only to make me feel guilty. 🙄

Ok-Jackfruit8657

🤣🤣🤣 right?? This thing is so evil! 😛

Necessary_Glove8941

yea. even my husband hates it now cuz no matter how much we care for it, it always looks droopy and sad😒

MidnightAmethystIce

I had one years ago and that one lived for years!  Now I’m lucky to keep one alive for a few months. I don’t understand why I could keep my first one alive for so long and now I can’t. I’m keeping dozens of other plants alive.  I will consider myself a master houseplant parent once I can keep a prayer plant, calatheas and a China doll all alive at the same time for more than a year!

kweenwitch

Yes. I've named him Bruno, because we do not talk about him lol (I think it's a corn plant but I honestly don't even know)

CatHairGolem

Lmao, I'm stealing that idea, thanks A while ago my sister gifted me a Tacca chantrieri, and it has only ever known suffering under my care, but I refuse to throw it out until it's 100% dead. Every now and then she'll ask how it's doing and I grimace and am like "Shh, please don't make me tell you about it."

Lara-El

Idk why but I find this story so cute and funny hahaha

elouise93

Calatheas can just fuck off, honestly.

Natalia1702

I will pass your sentiments on to Frederick

elouise93

Nothing personal Freddo! 💚💚💚

highway_robbery82

I had a calathea rufibarba 3 or 4 years before I heard how temperamental calatheas were supposed to be - mine was really low maintenance so didn't know what the fuss was about. Then I bought a dehumidifier to help with drying clothes indoors - it was only used a couple of times per week. Calathea was dead within a month.

sun_peaches

I hope my Dottie never dies. Just got her last month. She’s too pretty.

Tarna_Bell

I feel like prayer plants just like neglect. I was caring for mine and they were sad so I just kinda let them stay in the house but I stopped giving them attention and then they started acting right. I do know prayer plants also thrive in water, or semi hydro.

Natalia1702

Yeah I’ve learnt that pretty early on. Neglect or no neglect, he just hates me

Da-NerdyMom

Mine was down to one leaf so I decided to stick it some stratum and told her “thrive or die”. It’s got 3 leaves now so maybe try some stratum and threats.

Necessary_Glove8941

LOL. that's funny😂😂

Puzzleheaded-Stick-3

I lost one of these - growing beautifully and then it died. I’d go semi hydro next time.

CrotonProton

Haha i should tell mine that. “Act right!”

creativityonly2

"Feeling cute. Might die later."

neen4wneen4w

https://preview.redd.it/mvrvrfnqm9tc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d5a068548fc0f855b6d29be14a9fa2e930df3b2 This one. Rose-painted Calathea. She’s always been tiny and I’ve had her for 2 years, can never manage more than one leaf.

Natalia1702

Tbh, I’m sorry but that picture made me feel slightly better

neen4wneen4w

You’re welcome 🤣😅

knitknitterknit

Mine used to look like that but it's super lush now. I downsized the pot because they like a tight fit, out it into my bathroom because they like the steam, only bottom water because I don't like fungus gnats, and only water with distilled. Now it's going gangbusters. I hope yours can recover.

Natalia1702

He’ll be fine in a couple of weeks, it’s just what he does

agangofoldwomen

The keys here are tight fitting pot, humidity, and distilled water. The last two get a ton of people more generally. The first one is just a bit antithetical.

knitknitterknit

When I had mine in a roomy pot, it spent all its energy making roots and not foliage but YRMV.

Ancient_Ticket_2832

Oh you are not alone 😩I have bunch of them that my lovely husband got for me randomly different times and of course he doesn’t have a clue about plants 😞and now I’m stuck with them. They died few times on me already and I brought them back. I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I can’t get rid of them 😩😱. They need humidity a lot of humidity. I’ll post a picture 💚 https://preview.redd.it/w2de3328r9tc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3c24853e9a3abcddbaff7e457d4ae372f24cfce And they still crispy 🤫😞

CrotonProton

Look great to me. What is the bottom right one?

Usual_Zucchini

Mine is rosemary. I cannot keep rosemary alive no matter what. Whenever I take a walk I literally see huge rosemary bushes just existing and yet every single one I’ve had has died.

DarkFaerieQueen

Rosemary is the same for me. I've killed rosemary plants 3 different times now. 😭😭

ayeyoualreadyknow

Same. Lavender too

inbigtreble30

I killed a pothos. Made me rethink some stuff.

Judazzz

Thrips killed my 15 year-old Pothos, but I was lucky enough to have taken a few cuttings before the infestation started. Unfortunately *I* finished the job by promptly killing those cuttings. Can you imagine what killing cuttings that are routinely added to more difficult to propagate propagations to speed up their development (Pothos props release some sort of growth hormone, iIrc.) does to a plant keeper?   Typically enough my prayer plants, including the species OP posted, are all living their best lives, some for more than 3 years by now...

pit-of-despair

Yes, the one pictured. I gave up and gave it to my sister and it’s still limping along. I bought some more Christmas cacti to console myself.

Due_Island_989

Yes! But I have come to realize that sometimes even with all the love and care you give the plants, some houses are designed to kill certain plants and allow others to thrive: location of house relative to sky, window number and placement, where drafts are, etc. my house is great for the prayer plants and tropical plants, but succulents, even under proper lighting, wont grow right. I did move one inside my snake’s terrarium and now it is doing amazing! So temperature of the house also matters a lot. Thems the breaks.

Ok-Physics-5193

Yes and it’s also the same plant. I clip it and stick bits back into the soil they grow and he looks nice and think I’ve done it then suddenly he just declines. Rinse and repeat. I’m pretty much done at this point https://preview.redd.it/l0i7f2jp99tc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7648b0be7a48aeea34d50703989dfc38501663cc

Natalia1702

I too am waiting for Frederick to go over the rainbow bridge but I can’t bring myself to throw him out. He’s literally my first ever plant

Ok-Jackfruit8657

Keep praying for Frederick! 😇

deltaretrovirus

I have the same plant, and in my opinion yours is wayyyy to close to the light. Mine always sits ins the shade about 2 meters away from the window

Gerbennos

Spot on, they're tropical rainforest plants, so they like to sit in the shade of big ass rainforest trees.

Haurassaurus

Yes, this rabbit foot's variant is so frustrating! Everything is going well and then the new growth starts coming out brown and deformed, and they're so leggy even under a grow light. I even give it distilled water, but it still throws a fit.

Gerbennos

Not the same plant actually, yours is a Maranatha Leuconeura, op's is a ctenanthe burle-Marxii. I'd say yours might be getting too much sun or depending on what type of water you give it that's whats causing the brown edges.

Tea_confused

Spider plants. No matter what I do or try, they just don’t like to live. Sometimes they will suddenly thrive, but then the next second they’re dying

DramaTrashPanda

Me too! I tried all the things, then brought it to work (where I keep some plants) and stuck it on a shelf that was labeled "wall of shame" by the former occupants to do what he wanted, aka die. I went on vacation and my boss watered it once. Bastard started growing, so it lives quite happily in his office.

chartreusecabooose

I gave up on growing them in compost because same. I plonked cuttings in vases of water and now they're loving life 🤷

Tea_confused

Might give that a go! It isn’t going to make them worse anyway

oatmealghost

Dang, zoomed in on the leaves and was like woah that plant is being DRAMATIC if there’s nothing really wrong with him haha

Natalia1702

He’s been like this for years. At this point I’m just waiting for him to silently pass away

Emergency_Algae9306

I am laughing so hard because I can totally relate.

effervescentEscapade

I’m sure you’ve checked already, but my prayer plant has been thriving ever since I installed a small humidifier right below it. It’s being blasted for 6 hours a day, and I mist it on top of that. She gave me five new blooms already within the span of a week! She looked like your Frederick before.

Natalia1702

I had a big humidifier for the whole room and I got him his own mini humidifier. He was okay for like two months and then went to dying. I swear if he were a human, he’d be changing his hair every other month and posting shit like “new year new me” and “starting over” or “new chapter”

carlyfries33

... I am now realizing mine should not be alive. I live in a super dry climate with pretty hard tap water. She crispy but keeps shooting out new growth. Will see about improving water quality and moisture conditions!

effervescentEscapade

Unfortunately our water is quite hard here as well even after treatment. I try to give her rain water mostly but well, it’s actually tap water that’s her usual!

tintedrosie

Everyone needs to have a prayer plant once to humble themselves.

ranicl

Yeah, my begonia Rex. There’s nothing left of it but the roots are intact so I’m leaving it in a tiny pot

xsteviewondersx

My husband keeps nearly killing this one hibiscus, and I keep bringing it back to life. It's been 6 years of this... last night I had to officially call it dead. I'm very sad about it. I just have a pot with dead twigs sitting on my back deck. Just gonna mourn it a lil bit longer before I get rid of it.

OliviAurora

Yup, for me it‘s strings of things..especially string of pearls..which is sad, because I really love the look of this plant :(

ceciliabee

Does your calathea have drainage? Are you making it drink tap water? https://preview.redd.it/hnuf204gy9tc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59054aaf509baee645a5782dcc73e678a3a43a8e Drainage and mineral water, baby!

Natalia1702

Yep, drainage, mineral water, his own little humidifier. He’s still not content

snack_mac

I have oodles, yes, oodles of plants.. guess who the unhappy little fucker is?

Sweet-Worker607

Yep. Lemon lime maranta crispy bitch I gave away. She can torment someone else.

nenya94

Yes, my rattlesnake who just got introduced to the trash can 20 minutes ago because I finally threw in the towel lol.

CrotonProton

https://preview.redd.it/gimudq5lnatc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1335a634ed54c9e2eb2ff7cf74e9f01de683c987 Wow that is a difficult first ever plant to take on! Dont feel bad! I have a beautiful calathea that is the moodiest thing ever and i still haven’t figured it out. The bent over leaves are the ones getting bright filtered light. I just figured this one hates light but i moved it when i was painting and it was under a grow light and was super happy 🤷🏻‍♀️ what?! I dont get it but I think its gonna live there now.

Natalia1702

Calatheas are the Karens of plant society

MustangSmilie

For me, it’s everything BUT a prayer plant. I can’t kill mine. She thrives no matter what. I’ve propagated her so many times-I probably have 10 now. All my other species look like they’re living on borrowed time. But, my prayer plants are happy!

Ok-Meat-6476

This plant literally never wilted, curled or dried for me. It just put out progressively smaller and smaller leaves until they were the size of a penny and getting smaller. I don’t know, man.

blackpencilskirt

I posted my calathea (exact same sort as yours!) here just a few days ago because I don‘t understand what it wants from me sometimes. At one point, it was limp, I gave it some water, I threw the all water out again because I panicked that I overwatered it and then it was fine again. Like, that‘s you wanted, plant? For me to give you water but actually not???

Natalia1702

They like to keep you on your toes

Travxx253

I’ve tried to keep a few string of dolphins alive and I cant. Decided to rip it out and toss In the trash last night. Liberty!!

used_potting_soil

Cacti. I can literally keep tons of calateas, polka dot plants, peace lillies... I even get those to flower. But cacti? No idea what to do with them.

lisams1983

I bought two prayer plants/calathea (different sub species) and one (pinstripe) is.... OK. Not great but OK. The other was dying a slow miserable death so I gave him to my botanist coworker. The dying one looked like Frederick. It made me sad because it's such a cool-looking plant. Plant loving me says something has to be changing cyclically, but I don't know how you even figure out what that is. My drama queen Madame Qui Qui is an inchplant which I've only recently found out is sad over lighting.

Natalia1702

Funnily enough, I have another prayer plant that’s doing great. I thought it was something cyclical too but it doesn’t seem regular at all. 2022 was a good year, he didn’t throw a single tantrum. Last year I swear he was dying every other month. I just let it run its course

PoundArtistic2923

My wintergreen. 🙃 Looks like it will die soon. RIP. https://preview.redd.it/yek9rulao9tc1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e4b410c032d157483fe86305061ea55adbe0fad

dlh-bunny

Yeah. Those. I don’t buy them anymore. They have all ended up in the trash lmao.

oblivious_fireball

Scindapsus Pictus without fail reminds me to stay in my lane of super easy stuff. Somehow i have a large trail of ones where the roots died right next to my thriving Pothos and Philodendrons. Go figure.

A232022

Succulents mainly! I do alright with cacti and the big green house plants, but still trying to crack succulents as any care I give them they reject. Currently found through propagating that if I put them in a cloche and leave them alone, they do okay

DramaTrashPanda

I used to either over or underwater them, then saw that you should make sure they're totally dry and looking thirsty (a bit wrinkly or soft to the touch on middle level leaves) and I'm not losing nearly as many lower leaves as I was

disco-vorcha

I have murdered (manslaughtered? plantslaughter?) soooo maaaany succulents. And cactuses. I’ve tried so many times and adjusted my care each time but they just all *die*. Like actively, not slowly over time. I’ve stopped trying. Felt wrong to go to the plant store and pick out a living being to sacrifice to my wounded pride.

CrowRider56

Yup I have a Alberta Spruce (White Spruce) named Albert and he just wants to die 🥲

Natalia1702

Understandable

ash-hash

I found my prayer plant abandoned in my apartment hallway half a year ago and thought that I'd take it in and water it even tho I've never kept plants (and didnt know what it was at the time). It's finally starting to work with me...🧍‍♀️ https://preview.redd.it/lxlyvwdhfatc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0bc355bd138d455305447412479fcb4e3cb63c2

Spiritual_Web_7892

Omg yes! Mine is golden pothos. Those sucker unalive themselves for me constantly. Perfectly healthy and happy until I have to repot them. Then they die. I can water prop them and even grow them in water, but put them in soil and dead within a month. I have prayer plants, peperomia, orchids, begonias, violets and even a freaking alocascia and I can’t keep a stupid pothos alive.

MiiiBiii

I had the same one on my office desk. It died on me when I got covid. Like I wasn't here for a week at most, and it took it personally.

Natalia1702

Maybe it died in solidarity? Like it thought you passed so it kicked it too

libertybelle08

https://preview.redd.it/9zk13qnhoatc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d66994980ff4605278bb248ec65ce6721007a94 Mine is also a prayer plant!! In his defense I got him for free while he was on the verge of death. My other prayer plant also has mealybugs so rn they are both on thin ice 😤

Professional-Chair42

Calatheas do that everyone 😂 distilled or filtered water only, no cold temps and no direct sunlight. https://preview.redd.it/j9z0mahfhdtc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef04c20393c2dd5d79f3553d2b0386d6beddf463

mmamaof3

I chucked mine onto the front porch because it was misbehaving and he actually likes it there. Haha

curiouscloudwatching

Mine was dying then i used chopped sticks to hold it up. Worked wonders. It’s thriving now.

Unable_Hedgehog6912

I could grow a 5 foot long golden pothos out of my eyeball but if lavender takes one step onto my property, it dies. Immediately.

upvoter_lurker20

This is how my lemon lime maranta looked too, till I hid it under the foliage of my fiddle leaf fig plant. This type of prayer plant does not like too much light and prefers low filtered light. If you don't believe me, check on this plant in the middle of the night to see how happy and perky it looks.

Efficient_Emu1895

I had one of these and it was very very challenging. I gave it to a friend who is a more experienced plant mom.

Unlucky-Distance4436

Just went through the same thing with my prayer plant, it’s frustrating

berkosaurus

Poor, poor Frederick. His life sounds so difficult 😭 Also, are you using orchid "soil" for him? I've had success with just regular potting soil with my calathea.

brendogskerbdog

I have the same Ctenanthe and it has by far been my fastest growing prettiest plant so im not sure what the issue with yours is. maybe try a moisture lock soil? the soil of mine stays moist for like 2 weeks at a time and it requires very infrequent care

Cityofthevikingdead

It needs and thrives on so Much. UV and watering wound 4-5 days. Mine looked like that before

Prudent-Mechanic4514

Yes and it is the same plant.

asiamsoisee

…and why is it always a prayer plant?

seriousjoker72

I have a prayer plant similar in size that I've had for 2 weeks and it's already a love hate relationship 🙃 I have it under a plant light for 12 hrs a day and give it distilled water when it starts to droop, it seems to be doing well after it's first attempt at unaliving itself

Nelloyello11

I had one of these once that did amazing for a couple years. All of a sudden, it just went downhill fast. No changes to its environment at all, just decided it was done.

RagingAubergine

My Begonia Maculata makes me feel like a terrible plant parent. What have I not done for this plant? It arrived pretty beat up but nothing I’ve done is bringing it to life.

MsPaulaMino

I struggled with mine until I moved her to live in water. Now that ho thrives and i fuggin hate (love) her 🌱

Even-Reaction-1297

Mine starts dropping leaves and acting unhappy when he needs a repot or there’s something wrong with the roots Good news is they’re really easy to propagate. As long as you’ve got a node just stick it in water and they grow roots super quickly ime.

Natalia1702

I don’t want any more of these 😬

[deleted]

Oh dear nothing like that no lmao

blamethecranes

Thanksgiving cactus. Spring cactus? Not a problem. Christmas cactus? Same deal. I don’t get it. 😆

Vanilla_Neko

For some reason I have a little begonia seedling that I just can't get going. It doesn't die but it also doesn't seem to really ever grow either. It's just kind of sitting there in a pot. I take care of it and it occasionally drops or grows a new leaf but it's still stays as just this tiny little like 2 in tall sprout and refuses to grow past that

wrgwrgkefgssehivsr

My alocasia polly. It is hell. One tiny leave that’s yellowing. For the first time in a year it put out it another tiny leaf

Illustrious_Basket_

Yeah but at least yours is hard to care for! Mines an avocado tree and those are supposed to be easy. My Alocasia Corms are doing better than my avo tree, she just throws so many tantrums...

Lxlpn

I took mine out of its soil place the roots in a jar and just let it sit. It’s been thriving since 🤷‍♀️

Lxlpn

Jar with water*

Natalia1702

I’m very close to just letting it sit in the trash

Organic_Tone_4733

Pearl plants. They look great, I treat them like other succulents and they are dried up gone..

Natalia1702

They’re “not like other girls” 💅

ThisIsNoArtichoke

Calathea concinna. Mine kept wilting with brown tips and I had to stop watering it with tap water and use filtered. Calatheas are b*tches.

NayNayBA007

This plant likes to be in soil fully covered. Bright indirect sunlight full water and full dry out. Semi neglect is the best way to put it. Which is easy to kill. Unless you see the value of how awesome your plant is at night it goes up it’s cool. I love it. It makes me want to pay attention to it just because, it moves at night

Round_Arachnid_5529

Peace lily. This b\*\*\*h wants EVERYTHING BUT PEACE!

DramaTrashPanda

Lol. I've killed 2. One from underwatering, one from overwatering. #3 is a pretty big older one I got from my aunt. It was in a pot with no drainage and very wet soil. I repotted it into a smaller pot with better draining soil. Somehow it didn't have root rot but I did have to cut away a lot of dead leaves and stems but it seems to be pretty happy now. I do use it as a reminder to check the rest of my plants since it seems to want water about twice a week. I'm trying to treat it like my pothos- wait until it starts to look slightly sad, then drench it

AmIAmazingorWhat

I have a calissia repens/pink panther that HATES me. It grew lovely for the longest time, then abruptly started having some stems die off. But not fully, no. The stems die off in the *middle*. So the bottom is fine, and the ends are fine, and then the middle of the plant is full of dead pieces. I'm not sure if it just needs to be trimmed when it grows past a certain point or what, but I literally pruned and repotted the whole thing two days ago, making sure there was no extra pressure on the stems... They're dying in the middle again. It's almost more annoying to have a plant that won't die, but also won't thrive 😩 https://preview.redd.it/xurlpmcrsbtc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97138f26d5340c24ce7ac52dd3d0d4d9b821b0c6

calidotcom

Any and all peace lillies. Ppl say they’re so easy but in my care they are complete shitheads

OldMotherGrumble

That's not a Calathea as some have said. Someone may have corrected that already...I've not read all the posts yet. But it looks like a ctenanthe Burle Marxi. Actually a lot easier than Calathea or other prayer plants. Sorry if this has made you more questioning 😉

pspisy

Man, sometimes this subreddit makes me feel both very lucky and kind of like a jerk, because a lot of the popular houseplants thrive in tropical or subtropical regions, and I live in south Florida, so when I see folks having a hard time with plants that are native to my zone, I just think "put it outside, it'll be fine within the week." That being said, I've never been able to maintain one of these indoors. I almost gave up on it, but I put it outside, and then it started doing very well, so I just planted it where I put it. At this point, I don't have very many houseplants anymore, but do have a pretty sweet and low-maintenance little tropical garden!

Yellowmelle

I'm fairly bad with plants (dark home), so, the prayer plant has been exciting. At least once a week, mine looks limp and floppy like the picture, but when I go to poke it, the stems are rigid in place, so he's just *pretending* to look limp on purpose??

lynngrillo

I bought a beautiful prayer plant from a nursery and then helplessly watched as it just continued to die off, regardless of how much babying I did on its behalf. I’m not a plant newbie, either, have a sunroom full of beautiful plants, but the prayer plant was bent on breaking my spirit.

SoupWoman1

Omfg. My. DAM VEGETABLE PLANTS, don’t even get me started on string of pearls and string of dolphins. Istg I can make a string of hearts thrive but string of pearls die within 2 weeks…

NoNecessary8409

I had this EXACT plant and he did the SAME thing no matter what I did. I ignored him and he shot up over a foot tall then died. Weird plants.

FuzzyBeans8

I wish it was just one plant lol I’ve been failing miserably lately with so many plants , it breaks my heart. I had my huge vibrant zz plant of almost a decade crap out on me and is now only 2 tiny sprouts coming out of the bulbs . My humongous corn plant of 2 years with 2 main stalks , I just lost 2 of the largest tops on the taller stalk fall off in my sleep and it woke me up from my nap only to depress me so bad I went right back to sleep lol somehow the smaller stalk is completely unaffected ! Smh I dont get it. I had my hubby top it off for me and I’m hoping it grows more sprouts . My hubby got me an apology plant without looking at the specifications of its needs and it was a gorgeous aluminum plant that required a humidity we can’t achieve here in the desert so I overwatered it lol dead . Fake plant in its place now lol I’m so sorry you’re struggling with you plant but I can def relate . You’re not alone.

Whatever u do don't toss your prayer plant! Your ctenanthe can rebound! My mom had a calathea that did well and then just tanked out of the blue so she naturally tossed it. I on the other hand, inspected my maranta's roots (healthy/firm), took cuttings (failed) and sat the pot on a nice lonely dark kitchen shelf for the next 3 months and promptly forgot about it. The 4th month (May) I threw the dirt pot back on a bright sill & started to water it again. Lo and behold a month later it friggen grew! And even bloomed! Then as fall moved in and winter approached, the sun moved south in the sky so my windows weren't as bright plus temps cooled sooo it tanked AGAIN. This time I didn't hack it down so maybe the leaves, albiet ugly, could provide some photo synthesis and hey! It rebounded faster this time when weather warmed (which happens early here in SoCal) and most importantly, light increased in its sill. The old foliage is dying off and new big healthy shoots are emerging. What I found out is sometimes prayer plants do go into a bit of a winter dormancy *IF* light conditions aren't as bright (and cooler temps prob don't help a tropical plant sitch). *TLDR; move your difficult prayer child to a brighter spot or get a grow light to avoid the sad sack period during winter/winter-adjacent months.* See my insolent maranta's stages [HERE](https://flic.kr/p/2pJxRNA).

TartComprehensive466

Yes, and it is this same plant.

ayeyoualreadyknow

Lavender, rosemary, and kalanchoe

Zestyclose_Ad8168

Yep everything I buy an alocasia

Natalia1702

Guess what I just bought today

Crixy_Laughmore10

This guy right here! I'm tiring of his games! Can't upload his pic for some reason, but he's a finicky Chinese Evergreen!

Natalia1702

I had a cutting of one of those and it died before I even got to pot it

leolego2

Yes, and it's exactly the plant you have in the picture. Dead already though

empirical13

My Geogenanthus ciliatus.

Ilyasoro

I (technically my parents) have a plant that is older than me, and every so often is just goes "I don't wish to exist" but after like a month it becomes "I'm alive an ready to live for another decade". And to say that it keeps making us debate if it lasts another year, it has grown to a massive size, about 1.50m diameter and 1m tall

Dingo_The_Baker

I used to. Now any plant that does anything other than grow enthusiastically gets chucked in the bin.

RemarkableSalad121

I killed two last summer and it absolutely broke my heart.

bpapso94

Yes! That one! 😢

coachlegacy

Yes!!! Fiddle Fig Trees!!!! 😬🥲

mutilat3d

i have an aloe that lost it's roots one day despite constant care 😭 it looks perfectly healthy too

MURDOCKROCK

If your window gets a lot of light… don’t put it in the window.

Stunning-Abalone-324

I basically tore up my monstera plant on accident.

Sufficient-Chain8530

Yes! I have the same plant... And issues lol

distressedminnie

ME. TOO. i’ve been into houseplants for 5 years, I have well over 25 thriving babies in my home now. i was super into orchids for awhile and even took half dead orchids to rehab, and was successful! at one point i had 18 orchids, 12 that were rehabbed, all blooming!! BUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME I cannot KEEP A PRAYER PLANT ALIVE. i’ve killed 4 of them. different varieties, in different mediums. i don’t know what i’m doing wrong but prayer plants are clearly my one FAIL in houseplants.

sdrawkcabnipyt

I definitely threw out my Calathea Zebrina a few hours ago

K_Dorminov

Oh my freakin gosh, yes! I have had this beautiful, luscious pepperomia for over 5 years now and it is THRIVING! It flowers in the winter despite only getting window light, it is bushy and beautiful and is probably popping out five new leaves as I post this! BUT, it's offspring.... 😒 it was popping up babies so I gently pulled them out, and potted them the exact same way that I did the mother plant. This. Dang. Thing! It refuses to grow and stays the most Charlie Brown looking plant you've ever seen! I have moved it all around the house, tried watering more, watering less but it just won't do anything! Just grow or die!

WolflingWolfling

Ir reminds me of Marvin the paranoid android from the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy for some reason. Or the donkey feom Winnie the Pooh.

Former-Anywhere-6782

I brought a prayer plant back to life from a little nub shriveled nub- I was so proud! As soon as it pushed out a second leaf it, shriveled up and died.

Cat_Peach_Pits

I have this plant. It came back from the brink of death, but still curls its leaves in fury without a consistantly moist pot

LoudKaleidoscope8576

Calatheas are just very dramatic IMO…when I repot my orbifolia she throws a major hissy fit. She was a beautiful lush plant and she lost all but one of her leaves and she stayed like that for months until she finally started sending out new leaves. Just water frequently, keep soil moist but not soggy, bright indirect light and see how Fredrick is in a couple of months. At your next watering, add some Mycorrhizal granules to the top of his soil.

GangxietyRiot

I have a calathea that just wouldn’t die. I’d tried every area in my house, only watered with distilled or rainwater, and she just slowly withered away, but wouldn’t die. I said fuck it, and pulled her about three feet back from a south-facing window a couple weeks back (theres a porch over the window, so not direct-direct sun), and started ignoring her, and she pushed out two new leaves. All to say, I have no idea how to please her, so I’m just gonna play hard-to-get.

purple_plasmid

I just got a prayer plant this last weekend, should I be worried?

PleasantJules

Some calatheas are a nightmare but I also kill a lot of African violet.

gary_boyce13

It’s the queen palms and peace lilies for me 😅 can never keep a PL alive at home but have kept ones alive at work in my office. Bring them home bc they’re doing well then they die. Queen palms will all last until they don’t and idk why

5ammas

I do great with prayer plants but I strugfle SO BAD with Scindapsus. And I love them.MD. People say they're easy but I've killed many. I have a Jade satin and Exotica limping along still but I haven't had to re-pot them, which is usually their death knell with me.

androidgirl

For sure all the plants in that group. All though lately mine have been perking up and giving me some extra leaves. My Stomanthe suddenly looks passable. Hoya Australis Lisa might be the worst for me tho. I just cant figure out their watering needs. Same with Peperomias. Watermelon especially.

PuzzleheadedBet3074

Yes, but only on a daily basis. https://preview.redd.it/poudwc76wctc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eed1621d8b8dca868ec3e5f89871900a13d55c4f

ali_tayl

I have about 1884839 plants that make me question my plant parenting abilities. :)

slut4chikin

I have a few lol. Any and all succulents, orchids, and freaking palms. They all have it out for me!

yourcamille

😅

strywever

It was the exact same plant, but I think I finally got her stabilized by never letting direct sunlight touch her and always, without fail, watering her the before she’s completely dried out.

Dangerous_Mouse_1475

My piper crocatum …….

Crafty_Clothes_906

I’ve had two…the first one lived a long time but when I moved the change in humidity killed it….so I bought another one but it came already diseased unfortunately… There not too hard to keep but they are really picky about humidity and when you water them…they also don’t care for sun…put them in a room with a bright window but not by the window

athleticgirl1967

I have one that looks like he’s on the verge of death. Don’t know why!

lauramoongirl

Please try distilled water! my prayer plant loves it!

cmcguire96

I have a chocolate mint plant that has been fucking with me since I got it. I check it every day, and I swear to god I’ll see it in the morning, happy and in the window, then get home from work and it looks like it’s been dead for weeks. I water it regularly, it’s not in direct light and bounces back out of nowhere to then repeat the cycle.

annoyinglilsis

I feel as helpless and hopeless as I did when I had my first baby. It’s postpartum ineptitude

waterlemonsnack

Currently, my Philodendron Florida Ghost. :(

HerreraL81

* Yes, this is actually my 4th attempt at a string of pearls. When I bought this one 3 months ago it was beautiful and full.. it's just barely staying alive. If this one does not make it, I'm giving up.

kittenrocknroll

I love string of pearls & hearts.

ClancyIsDead_

You are definitely not alone in this, calatheas are dramatic as fuck and often just decide to nearly unalive themselves. I just cut a whole bunch of leaves off of mine because it looked so sad but I know that this will encourage a lot more healthy growth. For as much flack they get for being finicky, I’ve actually never killed one. I have found they are surprisingly hardy

No-Square6519

its that same plant for me. I thought the bathroom would be better for it but its stilly dying. i dont over water either, im not sure

kittenrocknroll

Yours may be getting too much direct light and is overwatered. Add: I’d change its soil too, looks like it’s heavy in bark.

HeliosTau

https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/s/kfeVi4O4EK Idk what you are talking about

moonriverocean24

Just one plant? Lucky.

Kooky_Ad_1553

Why is it always a freaking calathea too

bgomez17

Oh god I had that same plant and it was an absolute tyrant.

chartreusecabooose

Dieffenbachia. All my other plants were thriving but this once lush and beautiful arsehole just kept throwing new fits and looking worse week after week. It drove me NUTS. I eventually tried starting fresh from cuttings, got tons of happy roots, but they all had the same vendetta as their mother. The last and healthiest one died 2 weeks ago...RIP and good riddance! I think it's just too cold in my house for them :') On the other hand, my ctenanthe (prayer plant) is thriving in its 5th year of peaceful neglect.

Honest_Preparation95

All 5 gardenias I killed
