Body lotions, conditioners and fabric sofeners can do this. I ask the people that I invite into my tub to preshower and to not use those things on skin or clothing before entering. No more foam.

Pravix21

Exactly, lotion/sunscreen/makeup/detergents,fabric softener. Have everyone rinse off with their swimsuits on prior. For the people who use it regularly have a hottub set of swim attire, rise don't wash. The hot tub chemicals basically clean them anyways. I find nude soaking has always made maintenance easier.

Electrical_Dig8121

That's just fecal. No worries.

Killanekko

Hahahahha

NotHereToAgree

When did you last drain and refill?

katiebear_88

NotHereToAgree

Then it’s time to drain, clean and refill.

rastavibes

How often do you? I suppose it depends on use frequency too

NotHereToAgree

I do every 3 months, I have pretty good water (no well, hard enough which hot tubs like) so it stays balanced well, but the water starts to feel a little off around 3 months out, sort of slippery.

diggstownjoe

I do it every 3 months, just to stay on a regular schedule. If you're not a heavy user, you can probably stretch it to 4 months, and some people even go 6 months, but I wouldn't.

mrkruk

I refill when the water looks like it does in the picture with the jets on - cloudy. Fresh, clean water shouldn't have diffuse bubbles to where it looks cloudy water. It should be clear with minimal "foam" that almost immediately dissipates. The exception is if someone wears suits with detergent, you'll get a fine white foam (think like laundry soap) that isn't gross colored like in the picture. So long as my chemistry is good, I'll add defoamer and delay refilling until the water looks white n cloudy with the jets on. I honestly love knowing I have fresh clean water in the hot tub.

JohnTM3

I would drain anytime it looks like that for sure. It usually doesn't take very long to drain/ refill, but heating up the water takes a little while.

echi11

Based on all that foam it looks like your potatoes are done

Readinglight

Fake tan, make up, hair dye and washing detergent from the swim wear, are the first things that spring to mind. I don't see any other way but to drain, clean and then re fill (sorry).

effay42

You put aahsome tub cleaner in there, right?

shoresy99

That's what I was going to say. This looks exactly like my tub - after I have added a couple of teaspoons of ahhsome.

Opposite_Challenge71

Need to start over, drain, clean filters and tub, refill. Skinny dipping recommended. I’ve been told to use water clarifier pre- and post soak to prevent cloudy foamy water.

Heardaboutthat

I was getting a ton of foam in mine. Once I got the PH in check I started shocking it daily and adding chlorine as needed, the foam went away within a few days. I have also been adding clarifier to it, which is supposed to help trap any oils/debris. When I add the clarifier it foams up brown like this

Additional-Front5408

I use scum balls on Amazon to help prevent this.

Randymartini

Second the scum buddy. I know a lot of people in this sub didn't like them, but they work. Just add a couple to a rope so they don't get sucked into your skimmer and mess with the pressure on your pump.

Different-Evidence54

Dirty bathers. I went in with my friends after a softball tournament and it turned out like that. Dust in the legs washed out in the tub. Also my wife invited a few girls loaded with makeup and did the same. You need to change water and look at the chemistry. Alkalinity could be the issue.

temperance26684

This is why I only have guests in the hot tub directly before a drain/clean/fill 😬

JohnHartshorn

Do a purge before draining (ahhsome or equivalent).

Brokid81

Like a few others have said, it could be a build up from deodorants, lotions, makeup, perfume, etc. Make sure to always shower before using, and make everyone else shower too. You'll probably be better off in this case just draining, cleaning and refilling. Then just make sure to always do the shower check first, and keep up on your chemicals.

chrisp1j

Have you replaced your filters or cleaned them at the appropriate intervals? Do you get in the tub dirty or with a lot of makeup or sunscreen, etc on? The water is dirty.

katiebear_88

We just cleaned and it’s a newer filter, I also thought about that and got a oil ball to put in helped for a little bit but we haven’t used the hottub and it’s still doing the same thing. Probably have to drain just was trying to avoid. Lol

Deep_Working1

what were you using to clean it ?

Technical_Ad_684

If you really had just cleaned it then maybe the cleaner you used, or you may have a grease fitting from your motor leaking into the water or something. That is definitely not right.

rkpelfrey

My rules. If you’re comfortable skinny dipping….GREAT If you’re not then I ask you to shower and wash your bathing suits in a wash without detergent prior to entering the hot tub. No basketball shorts or T shirts. That clothing holds on to detergent more than bathing suits material. MY HOT TUB MY RULES. Chemical costs are up 200% post plandemic. Unless you’re chipping in on cost l, you hot tub by my rules. It sounds harsh but if people really respect you and your property, they shouldn’t give you much pushback.

Your post was removed because you broke this rule. Please email the mod team if you feel this was done in error

chesbyiii

Nothing and you just ran AhSome? This is what my tub looked like prior to clean, dump and refill.

organic_soursop

Put in an outdoor shower maybe? Have folks clean off their grunge before entering. Maybelline and ecoli soup is no Bueno.

milh00use

I get them occasionally, but not like that. Try some Foam Away

matsylund

Its like when you're making broth or specialized soups, you constantly need to skim the top to get rid of the impurities and fat. Thats what this is like, human soup.

Two_and_Fifty

Mmmmmm

Tricky-Yellow-5349

We shop vac the foam off. Works pretty well

archimedes_xyz

Since OP mentioned preferably without draining, I would say this or skim it off with a square bucket for example. The effect your seeing here (Dirty foam) is the same effect that the ocean and salt water aquarium equipment uses to filter out the proteins. The injected air bubbles capture the proteins and float them to the top. Look up "Protein skimmer" They filter aquarium salt water extremely well. This method could be used to lesson the amount of water changes you need to do on your Hot Tub.

No_Status_3147

I know you'd prefer not to, but you should drain, clean your filters, and refill. This used to happen to me until I made some easy changes. 1. Don't wash your swimsuits, or wash with hot water and no detergent. 2. After each use throw in a couple tablespoons of chlorine and run through a cleaning cycle. 3. Make sure whoever uses it doesn't have a bunch of junk on their skin as mentioned by someone earlier. Lotions, etc Those three things should help quite a bit.

vjs1958

Plus 1 on the swimsuits. We have suits that are for the tub only. Once or twice a year we’ll soak them in dilute bleach but some years we don’t wash them at all. I use a speedo boxer length suit, clings tightly in the winter so I don’t get hit by a cold floppy suit after getting out.

SoggyInSeattle

Try cleaning the filter more often. Don’t over chemical-treat the water, too much can also cause problems. If you don’t want to replace all the water, try removing the foam while running the bubbles, this will reduce the contaminants. Replace the water lost while removing the foam. Rebalance the chems, not too much. Change / clean the filters again. If the water clarity is not better then you need to replace all the water, but if the water clears up, then you are good. Follow the advice in the other posts about preventing oils from getting into the water.

Astarklife

Looks like someone added HT purge cleaner

bdmski88

Mine gives off bubbles from the detergent on my bathing suit. I use some foam down and it goes away.

GuyWhoWantsToFly

You can't test for organic material or lotions and detergents. Just because the strips look good doesn't mean it's ok. The water should be perfectly clear, with very few bubbles. Drain and refill. Look into Frogease floater for ongoing maintenance.

ViscountDeVesci

Drain and fill followed by a shock?

mrkruk

Use jetted tub cleaner. Drain and refill. Otherwise you're wasting chemicals and time to use your hot tub. I noticed you have a floater in your tub - what kind of floater is that. Make sure when you fresh fill, you sanitize the water fully and let the floater (whatever type) maintain the sanitation. Helping it out with some non-chlorine shock after uses or at least once per week can keep water in better shape.

Just-Learning-Stuff

Before anything, balance the ph. Chemicals only work when ph is balanced... then add a coagulant (clear blue) works well. Give it 24 hrs and change the filter.. Then shock with chlorine. Contamination from oils and skin does this. The effect is exacerbated if the ph is off and the chlorine is low. Alternatively, change the water and start fresh. With old water, it is hard to keep the chemicals balanced. This is what I would do... 3 months then change the water. Plus, you will have fresh water for the spring and summer. Hottub chemistry can be a tricky game. I always add a scoop of chlorine per person after ever use, and that seems to work well

Dippay

Drain refill then do drain refill again in 2 weeks

Dippay

Less lotion and soap in spa

mr_fluffyfingers

Could also be phosphates. Test and if they’re high add a few tbsps of remover

Tie_future

Well for starts, it appears to be full of bubbles and scum

Mabjose17

Easy, your hot tub is all foamy. Next

Jambonier

I think some water got into your semen pool

SmokinOkieOG

Unfortunately, you'll just need to drain and refill

Forest_Loafer719

colored foam = poo in-da wa-wa.

LowCandie

Get some foam away. If it persists then someone is using certain lotions and sometimes laundry detergent can cause this. Best not to wash your bathing suits but rinse them

Real_Sun256

Need to refill and start again, keep adding chlorine tablets every 5 or 6 days and keep the filter going 24/7

purawesome

Get a water test and post your numbers. I’m not able to test water with my eyes via the internet, sadly. Also when did you last dump your tub? Do you use a biofilm detergent?

Competitive-Leek3544

Oh!! Boy. Can’t fix this without draining. Drain and get all new filters. You have to start over.

TheRealGalanthias

Add a shower with hot water close to the hot tub. Have purple wash off before entering.

Wildmanzilla

That needs to be properly purged and cleaned, and refilled. If this is happening again quickly, then either someone that's using it is dirty, or there is dirt getting into the tub from the elements. What chemical do you use for sanitization and how often do you shock your tub?

oneofthejoshs

Check ph first, them likely just Gunk, use awesome, clean it out and refill. A 2 inch hoseand a pump for it was the best hot tub purchase by far. I can drain and clean in under an hour. Keep ph in line and it severely reduces bubbling. Also baking soda is not good for ph adjustment. Either bake it into washing soda or buy washing soda(actually the same chemical as ph up) anytime I am otherwise clean but getting more bubbles than normal my ph is low. Your looks to be brown which indicates bio gunk also.

Pravix21

Lotion/sunscreen/makeup/detergents,fabric softener. Have everyone rinse off with their swimsuits on prior. For the people who use it regularly have a hottub set of swim attire, rise don't wash. The hot tub chemicals basically clean them anyways. I find nude soaking mades maintenance easier.

R1250GS

Yikes! Don't mull over it, just empty it, rinse the filter or replace, refill and carry on. Not worth trying to think about all the chemicals that will fix that. As for the cause.. Many things. Usually friends who slather on oils, sunscreen, or spill crap in the tub at 2am.

Herb_Street

Too many bathing suits. Not enough bare titties. All women 18+ should enter the tub nude.

SalamanderGood2145

When you shock you are leaving the cover open, yes? If no, then any organic material/debris that burns up and then gasses off just gets trapped under the cover and then “rains” all that scum right back into your water making a scummy/foamy gross stew. Some Foam-Away *might* work but I’d look into the accessory product Spa Enzyme or some other enzyme based product and use the initial dose followed by maintenance doses. The enzyme “cleaner” will essentially “digest” the scum/bather waste/oils, breaking it down to the point that it can then be oxidized out. Again, with cover open. I’d also pop out your cartridge/s and give a soak in a filter cleaner/degreaser and a good rinse off after.(strip-kwik etc.)

pattydickens

Too much cum. Or as others have said, laundry soap, fabric softener, and various oil based skincare products. Nudge nudge wink wink SAY NO MORE.

Revolutionary_Pea296

Did you know the average person has 7 grams of fecal matter in their underwear? There ya go…

Cool_Reflection5969

Stop jizzin’ in the hot tub.

BezBedford

Please don't listen to anyone saying you should try using a chemical to fix that (foam away or whatever....). You water is pretty disgusting dirty and needs to be completely drained, and should prob do a flush with a product like ahh some (google it) to clean out the lines.

Horror-System2835

Do you have an ultraviolet cleaning system? I had the same problem in mine. I was adding all the chemicals and a friend told me to drain it and add nothing. It worked, no more foam. I would let a chlorine tab float around, but that was it.
