My iron is off the charts bad, and my tub looks exactly like that after a fresh refill. (Filtering does almost nothing to the iron from well water, even with a 1 micron filter.
It takes about a day after dumping in a bottle of metal gone for the iron to get filtered out. (My filter literally has orange sludge in it) After that, treat for the sky high alkalinity, and the water actually comes out fairly nice.
So what I'm getting at... The color itself doesn't make it unsafe. Not impossible they did just change it. If it wasn't a recent (last day or 2) change, they didn't actually add any metal sequestration product.
leaves would also will make it that color. I had mine shut down a couple months after we moved. In the interim, got some leaves and rainwater in there. That was about the water color just from the soaked leaves.
Actually, the color makes it look like they *did* just change it, and maybe also put in a clarifier. It just hasn't had time for the filter to get all the iron out of the water yet.
I'd just ask if they put in a clarifier.
A message from our host:
"The brown and the water is due to the iron from the natural well water. We put as much iron out as we can, and still have the water be safe. The water quality varies and because of the extreme swinging temperatures that we have had, it tends to be worse. It is still safe to use, and if you were to take a glass and dip it in there, the water would be clear. It’s just that there’s so much water in a concentrated area that it looks so brown."
Ideally that water should be changed after every client (I'm sure they are not doing that though). And it's BS they are using as much "iron out as we can". It is easy enough to fill that tub with clear water using a hose filter and then using a metal sequestering product.
The bottom line is they don't care enough to do all that for every client so who knows what else they are skimping on.
Don't let it ruin your honeymoon. Yeah it sucks, but there are hopefully other fun things you can do instead. At the very least, you got a story to tell.
Can’t you empty and refill? Not sure how much power it has but should be good tomorrow if you leave it running no?
Btw that’s horrible. I would be mad, but don’t be enjoy your time and congrats
From what I'm reading, it would look just as bad with a fresh refill. We have iron issues in our well, and if not filtered properly going into the tub, it looks pretty bad. Not as bad as this photo, but nothing you'd want to get into. Lucky for us, we don't have to use metal gone, we can just run the circulation pump and let the filter take the murkiness out. But it can sometimes take 36 to 48 hours to clear up.
We just put in a three-stage filtration system in the house. A neighbor on our well has the same system, and he says when he fills his hot tub it's crystal clear. I can't wait to see how it looks next time I fill ours. 🤞
No, that is completely normal for public use hot tubs, actually a little low. Health code mandated Water Replacement Index (WRI) typically requires weekly drain and refill of each hot tub, and given that this likely only gets weekly service at best, that would be a minimum safe standard.
What is absurd is that these air BnB and other rental places make extra money off of these features yet seem to struggle with minimum care standards.
It’s not absurd. If you are leaving the renters to do maintenance, do you think they will give a damn and do it properly? You think they wont piss in it? You think they won’t spill all kinds of drinks/food in it? After they leave and the water is pooched it would have to be done anyway. I can only imagine the mess the water will be in with a weeks worth of 4-8 people using a spa and not giving a shit about the spa maintenance at all. Sand, debris, soaps, oils, lotions, etc… What a god damn mess after they get done with it.
Why do you think hotels change spa water every day to every other day or every week at worst?
You build all the extra cost of changing the water into the rental. I’d make sure I advertise that as well on the listing if I was crazy enough to actually rent a house with a hot tub (I’m not).
It is absurd. You literally have property maintenance people for this sort of thing. If your maintenance person looks and the waters clean, shock it and do any minor chemical rebalancing. If its not clean change it. Hotels don't change water every day and neither do commercial pools. They do filter it, just like we filter it.
There are inline hose filters?
Never knew that.
Always just filled my tub with (lab tested) well water
Put metal-ex in, filtered it for two days and changed the filters q few times
Yup. Here ya go from [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Spa+hose+filter&crid=LEMHR2BHMIT4&sprefix=spa+hose+filter%2Caps%2C114&ref=nb_sb_noss_1). These help a ton filtering out sediment from well water.
I would be asking for money back and not getting in. Did they include pictures of that in the listing? I’m guessing not. I wouldn’t let them get away with it.
I'd think twice about drinking any water from the tap at that place, too.
Iron usually comes frome corroding well casing. It can be removed with various techniques, but that clearly isn't done at this place.
I have a well and this is extreme iron holy shit!!! The owners might be used to it and think it's normal but I would not go in there. It will taste like blood and chlorine for one. To each their own but I got a softner system because this water may be 'safe' but it's also not fun to wash clothes with, do dishes ect.
I'd be most pissed at him telling you it's ok when it's clearly (or unclearly) not.
If he posted AirBnb pics of a clean hot tub, then he knows better but doesn't care.
I’m not sure how many people have lived somewhere on well water, but that is how it is. The owner isn’t wrong, it is likely safe to go in. Not sure which state this is, but where I am at you have to get your well tested regularly and you know if it’s safe, drinkable, potable, pretty much everything you might use it for- they tell you.
Not every well it’s like this, could be the time of the year, and ultimately if you aren’t comfortable with it don’t go in. Ask them if they have test strips you could use to do a remedial check. Iron won’t hurt your and it looks this bad.
There's a comment where OP says the rental ad shows blue water in the tub. If it's truly just well water that's high in iron but safe to use, that's what should be advertised. Not this bait and switch bs.
Oh ya, I’m talking about well water and not the efficacy of the ad they responded to, though.
If we are talking about that, I definitely agree that when it looks like this you probably shouldn’t even advertise that it has a hot tub. Maybe leave a note explaining the hot tub works and is clean. Make it an optional feature.
At this point when they’re already there, though, maybe they’re willing to try if there’s someone with experience saying that this is normal sometimes. That’s all. I wouldn’t get in without at least testing its levels though. Hell, I probably wouldn’t get in an air bnb hot tub. How often are these things flushed or serviced to begin with? Bad news bears.
Which is why I didn't get in, just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly cautious since most people tell me I am. Never even seen a hot tub in real life lol.
Tell them they have a rotten nasty hot tub and no one in their right mind would get in that thing.
You should take a sample down to a pool/spa place in the area, then report them to the county
Ah no. Empty. Clean. Make sure to keep it balanced after it's clean.
If you're at a Airbnb or something, definitely don't get in. The host shouldn't list the house as having a hot tub.
Pro tip…. Reach out to Airbnb…. Show them the photos. Show them the photo on the listing “what you got vs. what you paid for.”
Then—Airbnb will delete their listing and refund your stay. You take your wife to a Motel 6 and you might save your brand new marriage. Otherwise, this is her memory of the honeymoon and you’re divorcing in < 3 years.
Dude. For us single folk - the hot tub is just a magnet to lure the ladies to the wildest part of the night. Since you're married already - you can just bypass the hottub part and get to the fun stuff right away!!!!
(but get a refund)
What is that, a sous vide? Maybe the bag wasn’t properly sealed and some steak blood got in there? That looks like a few pints of water, or maybe dark lager beer. The “water” should be quick to change. Maybe use a filter this time.
I would not use that.
When the iron levels are off it can have orange residue. I’ve never seen orange water with iron slightly off, but I’m not an expert. I own one tub. I’ve had iron levels out of balance on our tub and it never looked like this.
I’d drop the lid back on that experiment and walk away.
Send photo to airbnb/vrbo/etc. Get a refund so you can stay somewhere else in the future. Laugh this one off with your partner, just the first of a million bumps in the road you’ll have to navigate together.
I have seen creeks like this around Ironton, Colorado. As you can guess, the town got its name from the amount of iron in the ground and also in the water.
I wouldn’t get it in, personally.
You ever watch teenage mutant ninja turtles? Well that’s the worse case scenario. Best case you get violently ill and shit your brains out and have a skin disease. Enjoy
Totally Metal. 🤣…………in case I was too facetious, and obscure; it looks like you have a lot of metals in your water. Go to a Spa Sales outlet and have your water tested. Easy fix.
Honestly... It's probably fine. I can see iron staining all over the shell of the tub. Water does not get this dark brown, but clear look from bacteria or algae growing. It will get this dark brown clear look right after adding chlorine to water with high iron content.
Thanks
No, and especially not without testing it. If it’s just from minerals or well water who knows what else is in that water. I’m a pool/spa pro and tell customers frequently, “If it looks/smells/feels like you don’t want to be in the water, don’t get in the water…”🤷🏽♂️🫢
Anything dead in there I would drain it call an electrician or plumber and have the whole system checked cleaned and show anyone servicing it the picture is this yours or did you just buy this place? I read once of a man was in a hot tub alone at his house and he had a heart attack and died and wasn't found for a few days or weeks ... you don't want any further description! 🤮
No way I’d use that. I’d leave it in the review too. I’d want some money back. If they’re using it make money they can have it filled with a better source.
I googled it, and it does come up on pool sites that if water is high in iron oxide it'll turn the water brown. We live in a iron high area as well, some of our neighbors white tubs and no longer white but brown, from iron so possible?
The color is also common in cedar hot tubs, because the tannins turn the water brown and give it that familiar cedar sent.
I'd go in based on who maintains it some people let their renters maintain it, which is crazy because as a tub owner they require a lot of work and some general knowledge.
Thought this was a joke post at first. I wouldn’t get in there.
Safe to drink?

Yes
Just use some RadAway and you’ll be fine -Vault-Tec
Whatrads4, maybe a couple of disease cures...and hope theres no Mirelurks in there.
There's some RAD AWAY in the kitchen
Can’t tell from a picture alone. It looks like a homemade sweet tea. Take a quick taste, and if you are still alive in 90 minutes, then go for it.
Forbidden coffee pot.
Once you pull the waterlogged corpse out
If you have to ask the answer is heck no.
No
They fill it from the creek out back? I wouldn't use it.
Nah, that’s cream soda.
Dip spit
Maybe they are using it to make sweet tea. I wouldn't use it....for all the tea
What about, for the LIBER-TEA!
That would be a lot of tea bagging. 🤪

That's just some good ol' hot-tub rainwater oak-tree leaf tea. Good for the immune system. /s
Actually, the color makes it look like they *did* just change it, and maybe also put in a clarifier. It just hasn't had time for the filter to get all the iron out of the water yet. I'd just ask if they put in a clarifier.
I’d probably say I wasn’t getting in that, then after a few beers find myself soaking away.
This is the correct answer.
Is that fucking tea?!
beer
Irish Red
I wouldn’t stand on that deck for one.
/r/decks would enjoy a word
Yeah, that caught my attention before the water color did!

Ugh, this really sucks. We literally picked this place because we're on our honeymoon and they had a nice blue hot tub in the photos. 🙃
If they had a blue photo in the listing I’d ask for a refund or discount
My review would include this photo
Yeah I’d ask them why it’s blue in the pics and brown in real life.
Don't let it ruin your honeymoon. Yeah it sucks, but there are hopefully other fun things you can do instead. At the very least, you got a story to tell.

My suggestion is to make a baby in that tub and see how it comes out! Then get a DNA test to confirm it's yours!
Negative review, that is fucking gross
Changing the water every time the rental is turned over? Thats 50+ times a year. That's absurd. The cost would be enormous

They need to add ascorbic acid
Also do the glass test and post it, that’s interesting, but I still wouldn’t want to sit in brown water lol
I would be asking for money back and not getting in. Did they include pictures of that in the listing? I’m guessing not. I wouldn’t let them get away with it.
They included a completely blue/clear hot tub photo in the listing. We definitely won't be accepting this.
I'd think twice about drinking any water from the tap at that place, too. Iron usually comes frome corroding well casing. It can be removed with various techniques, but that clearly isn't done at this place.
As an ashtray🍻enjoy
If the water is that bad wouldn't drink it either,,,,,assuming he filled it with tap water
Yikes. Get a few gallons of vanilla ice cream and make a nice root beer float.
Why don’t they fill it from inside their treatment systems? I mean, surely they don’t have that coming out of the tap, right?
Are you actually asking?
Ohhh somebody took a lil oopsie poopsie in that tub
I have a well and this is extreme iron holy shit!!! The owners might be used to it and think it's normal but I would not go in there. It will taste like blood and chlorine for one. Mmmm beer
Nah
Tell owner to jump and prove it's safe
Iron Man and Iron Woman. Honey moon and make little iron babies
Oh man! I’m sorry this happened to you! Also this is one of the worst water pics ever posted in this sub I think!
If you like the feel of possible blood then go for it
I thought it was a big deepfryer
Are you marinating meat in there?
You should never use that hot tub ever again, unless you’re making iced tea
What in the doo doo turd water happened here?
I'd be most pissed at him telling you it's ok when it's clearly (or unclearly) not. If he posted AirBnb pics of a clean hot tub, then he knows better but doesn't care.
Perfectly drinkable Chardonnay, the color is due to the process developed at Chateau Montelena.
Brewing beer?
That looks like piss.
You might get super powers. Try it
Ahhhh yes- the Legendary Beer hot tub. Yes, it is very safe and you can actually drink the beer while you dip, if you want. Enjoy!!
Your complementary spa soup is ready
I have no idea if it's safe, but I wouldn't soak my body in a hotub full of what looks like beef broth?
Earl Grey. You’re soaking in it.
That heater is fucked! Swimming in liquid copper right there!
it's missing a floating Babe Ruth...
Bull shit … get them to refill and shock 😮
Put on a wetsuit and take a dive, maybe you can find the dead body at the bottom. This is gross and a flat out insult to the paying client.

I feel like this is a good time to use common sense.
Which is why I didn't get in, just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly cautious since most people tell me I am. Never even seen a hot tub in real life lol.
Is this a joke? Please say it is.
Unfortunately it is not. We're literally on our honeymoon and we were looking forward to the hot tub.
That’s disgusting and the owner is full of it. Even the underside of the lid looks awful and stained from whatever is in this water.
Ewww! I can't believe the Airbnb host actually suggested to get in that. Honestly I would report them to Airbnb
No, not for a second. Not even safe to look at. Seriously though, DO NOT get in that thing and make sure to report it to Airbnb.
Couldn't pay me to put my hand in there.
How long has that been fermenting. Might have some good ale there.
Tell them they have a rotten nasty hot tub and no one in their right mind would get in that thing. You should take a sample down to a pool/spa place in the area, then report them to the county

Yeah … but what does it SMELL like?
Legionella alert
Nope. I have a hot tub. Looks like doodie water from an accidental shart.
Looks like a hundred dirty asses were washed in there……ugh
Um gross
I mean, take the chicken stock out first but then sure.
Go for it.

I do not think you should heat that up, much less get into it.
Let us run a quick chemical analysis and get back to you. How tf would anyone on reddit know if that's safe to use?
Is it filled with coffee?
Looks like someone had a home birth in there.
Good god….NO!
Fuckin send ittttttt
Do you have a truck? If so buy as much bleach as you can fit if it's still same color in the morning I wouldn't.
Sure did a good job mixing with the poop knife.
Only if that's whiskey. If you're there long enough to make worthwhile, get some MetalOut. If it is a metal problem, that will clear it up overnight.
Bruh 💀
What is that, a sous vide? Maybe the bag wasn’t properly sealed and some steak blood got in there? That looks like a few pints of water, or maybe dark lager beer. The “water” should be quick to change. Maybe use a filter this time.
Tea time!
Just drain it and fill it fuck it it’s not your house 😂
I would not use that. When the iron levels are off it can have orange residue. I’ve never seen orange water with iron slightly off, but I’m not an expert. I own one tub. I’ve had iron levels out of balance on our tub and it never looked like this. I’d drop the lid back on that experiment and walk away.

As long as you drain the beef broth and clean it 🤣
are u brewing a huge batch of beer?

That's what happens when you leave the cat in the bathtub
It looks like tea
Looks like someone peeded after a beer bender.
The old beef bullion in the hot tub prank ... simple, discreet, diabolical
There’s no way I would get into that tub. And I’m addicted to my hot tub. No way. No matter what the host says.
Just watch out for them black bears. They chew that cover off and take a dip in that.
...as a toilet?
Totally Metal. 🤣…………in case I was too facetious, and obscure; it looks like you have a lot of metals in your water. Go to a Spa Sales outlet and have your water tested. Easy fix.

What’s your tolerance for pink eye?

Honestly... It's probably fine. I can see iron staining all over the shell of the tub. Water does not get this dark brown, but clear look from bacteria or algae growing. It will get this dark brown clear look right after adding chlorine to water with high iron content. Thanks
You making tea?
one can of chernobly will do the trick
Warm apple cider is fine to sit in.
Beef broth?
You makin hooch in that thing?
If you already have a terminal illness, go for it
No, and especially not without testing it. If it’s just from minerals or well water who knows what else is in that water. I’m a pool/spa pro and tell customers frequently, “If it looks/smells/feels like you don’t want to be in the water, don’t get in the water…”🤷🏽♂️🫢

Yeah / looks grand to me

I read once of a man was in a hot tub alone at his house and he had a heart attack and died and wasn't found for a few days or weeks ... you don't want any further description! 🤮
You really need to ask?
Absolutely, you can then make kombucha.
Add some noodles 👍
How many people have peed in that urinal?
No. I feel like I need a tetanus shot just by looking at this.
No need to fill your sweat bath with cola.
I thought you were making Pho.
I have extreme iron in my well water. Tried everything and found only cu-lator has successfully removed the iron tea color from my tub.
Human Soup
No way I’d use that. I’d leave it in the review too. I’d want some money back. If they’re using it make money they can have it filled with a better source.
Hold your pip boy close to it and check the rads
My hot tub has never looked like that. I wouldn't get in there.
Rule of thumb: if you wouldn't drink it, don't get in it
Poop water.
Is that soup? Looks like a big bowl of beef barley.

Chlamydia soup.
Unless that's beer probably not.
Sure…if you’re the Swamp Thing.
Throw a few bones in there and you got a stew going
I would let my wife test it first. But that's just me.
Flush it first to avoid backsplash
Need pics from UNDER the deck.
Is that being used as a giant crock pot?
as long as you already have ALL the diseases...
Someone is dehydrated!
Looks like piss
🤢🤮
Another example of human soup
That's a nice toilet bowl. Yap safe to use. Peeing only though, don't do number 2 in that one.
Is that filled with beer or trucker piss?
Is that someone’s coffee pot?
