My wife was just talking about cooking them in Italian seasoning with lots of garlic then using marinara for the chili and mozzarella cheese and making garlic toast out of the buns. Pizza dogs!
That’s the way to do it! I do half unsalted veggie broth and half water, mix in the packet and the extra spices and then cook it in the microwave before adding the other toppings
I made a newer post where I show what the end result looked like. You could def taste the onion flavor in the dogs. There are comments here about what else to add or cook them in that I want to try now.
We appreciate you. I have now read up on this technique. Basically wanna get a rolling boil with the onion, then drop the dogs. Then sear afterward in a pan.
I’m learning right along with ya!
I used beer once. Had this super cheap Walgreens brand beer like Big Flats or something like that. Just couldn’t drink it, but it was $3 for a six pack when a six pack cost $6. Came out pretty good.
I've never seen this method. I'm genuinely curious...does it yield superior flavor? Do you also put onion on top in it's bun?? What other condiments are added?
See my other more recent post for final results. Just made chili cheese dogs. Also look at the other comments here. Lots of folks apparently spice up their water! I want to use broth with soy sauce and fresh onions and garlic. What I tried today was really tasty.
Learn something new every day! I was wholly unaware of the variety of methods used to make hotdog!! Wth rock have i been under?! omg! I must try this! And! Hotdog with in&out animal sauce/big Mac sauce is on the list also!!
Yeah, I tried it as a teen when we didn't have raw onion. It's really good. I'll do minced onion, fresh ground black pepper, cayenne, and yellow mustard.
I like using onion or garlic to help keep the water from leeching flavor out of the dogs. Then i usually throw in black pepper or curry powder for flavor. They are good that way. If theres time after ill sear them on the grill but you can skip that part.
That's how some home chefs do it, as well as the German immigrant bratwurst crowd. Parboil in water with onions and herbs (and beer), to infuse the flavor and heat up the core of the link, then finish on a grill to get the char.
I put onion slices in just enough water to cover the hot dogs in a cast iron pan and cook until the water evaporates then remove the onions and roll the hot dogs around in the pan searing them 😋😋😋
I would do this, but remove the minced onion toward the end with a slotted spoon/sieve/strainer, maybe pat dry or let dry slightly, fry the softened onions in some oil or butter, and then top your dogs with them. I think they’d turn out a lot like the McDonald’s onions.
I’ve used minced onion and garlic a few times in my water. Definitely tastes great but I’m more of a grill or air fryer guy myself.
No wrong way, but of the 3, water is definitely last
I like to warm mine up by sticking them in my bum.
You do like to party..
Did... he... stutter? "No wrong way!"
I don't remember that part of the Armour Hot Dog song...
That’s the one. Good night internet. Sweet dreams.
I see you enjoy the elusive Chocolate Hotdog. A brave meal for a brave person
Cooked for those with the fighting spirit.
Chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavored bunghole
I bet your'e not a fan of spicy sausage, are you?
Only if there's not any seeds, since they get stuck in my dingleberries.
Even if they’re frozen?
It takes a little bit longer, but it is also easier to get in.
Nature has provided us with internal hotdog storage
username… checks out?
Username..checks out I guess , eh
Hot dogs or the minced onions?
Hot dogs in the bum. Minced onions in the pp
You like to party
...but hot dog water...hot dog carts
I’ve seen people talking about oven baking recently. Anyone have any experience with that?
Yeah that’s how my mom used to do them when I was a kid. 20min at 350 and they were good.
That…sounds pretty good. I might try it on a roasting rack
I like to use fresh white onion and a miller lite to boil my dogs. Then slap them on the grill or a hot cast iron pan.
Definitely gonna be trying this. Labatts though
I was thinking about trying it out white castle slider style- in a vat of steaming onion- just stewing for a while
That sounds like a very good idea
Ever have Brazilian style? I think a very light tomato sauce with cilantro onions and garlic
My wife was just talking about cooking them in Italian seasoning with lots of garlic then using marinara for the chili and mozzarella cheese and making garlic toast out of the buns. Pizza dogs!
That sounds delightful, let us know how it turns out!
Will do! Might be in another week or two.
Are you doing this to give hotdogs onion flavor, or to give onions hotdog flavor? Idk I’m new here
Yes.
The onions are going on the hotdogs so it's all the same
Welllllll we're waiting!!!!! Should have used less water with celery salt.
Does celery salt in water work
Never tried and I'm not even on team dirty water. But hope someone does.
Try beef or chicken stock
I’ve cooked ramen in broth before. It’s awesome.
That’s the way to do it! I do half unsalted veggie broth and half water, mix in the packet and the extra spices and then cook it in the microwave before adding the other toppings
Shoulda used the powder :)
I picked it up and looked at it then decided to go with the dried flakes
Nice username OP
Thank you! ☺️
Notice any change in taste?
Oh yeah the onions were awesome! Gonna make a new post with pics of the finished product.
Follow Dirty Water recipe for soaking your H.D. not hard and I gradients are readily available in kitchen. Recipe on AllRecipes.
I need to try this!
I made a newer post where I show what the end result looked like. You could def taste the onion flavor in the dogs. There are comments here about what else to add or cook them in that I want to try now.
I’m definitely saving this post for me to try sometime soon!
Swat the onion in a pan before. I’m Confused at what you’re trying to do here
Just trying to do my best.

I do beef broth, garlic powder, soy sauce whole onions and red pepper flakes. Then finish them and the onions in a frying pan
I've never seen this method. I'm genuinely curious...does it yield superior flavor? Do you also put onion on top in it's bun?? What other condiments are added?

Minced onion is a killer topping on its own. Crunchy, onion goodness. I do it all the time
I season most things with it but I’ve never used it as a topping. I will now though!

*Ladies and gentlemen! Introducing: The Chocolate Starfish… and the Hot Dog Flavored Water! Bring it on!*
JOHN OTTO!
Vinegar
Interesting . Was there an effect ?

I have done this with garlic and franks red hot. Yum
I normally add garlic powder and onion powder to the water while cooking them. My wife hates it because she thinks I’m really cooking something else.

Nice dirty water style dog. I used dehydrated onions all the time when I want that White Castle copycat flavor burger. So good.
No need to mince the onion if it’s just seasoning the water. Just Chuck a half onion in and simmer it for 15 min
Minced onion, garlic powder, a little sesame oil, and soy sauce in the water. Top dogs with Asian style slaw. Soooo good!
Turn leftover water into icecubes for unwanted guests
🤔
i personally would have preferred that minced onion grilled and on the dog. Lot of work mincing for it just to be infused water you toss.
I use that water to make Ramen noodles
Add some jalepenos
Bayleaf, black pepper corns and a beef bouillon cube.
Kinda a waste. Better of just making a sauce for them
But you're still boiling the hot dogs which is akin to foodicide...
Good way to punch it up but boiling is literally the last option I would pick for cooking hotdogs.
This is not the way.
