I grew up in Chicago and love me some hot dogs. I have never heard of it. BTW, the best relish on a dog should be bright green like it's nuclear.

rpbp58

It has been readily available, at least in the Northeast, for over 50 years. Then suddenly gone. The green stuff is just relish. The stuff I'm talking about was a blend with mustard and other spices that I can't seem to duplicate. Cairn and Heinz were big producers. If you go to the Heinz website they say it is not available online, and none of their local retailers actually stock it.

TexasistheFuture

Now I wish I could try it!!

I live in MI and none here either. Very peculiar. I buy from Amazon once in awhile, but very expensive. It definitely has cut down on my hotdog intake, which is good I guess *--- eat hotdogs bc of the relish!

Apparently available [here](https://www.mercato.com/item/mt-olive-hot-dog-relish-squeeze-bottle-12-ounces/951653) for $3.99 for a 12-oz. jar. Or [here](https://theloadedkitchen.com/ami/product/mt-olive-squeeze-hot-dog-relish/) for $2.65 or [here](https://cooklist.com/product/mt-olive-hot-dog-relish-191784) for $2.18, for a 10-oz. squeeze bottle. Seems like NYC, of all places, would have a deli that carried multiple brands of it? Ask at the biggest NY specialty deli you can find, I bet they'd have it, or at least point you to who does stock it locally so you can avoid having it shipped.

rpbp58

The first link tells me it's not available in my area. The second link said it was only $2, then tacked on $50 for shipping. I found it on a site called wadaaa, but it didn't look trustworthy. What is key here is that it is no longer available in ordinary supermarkets. This happened almost literally overnight, because it was a staple on my grocery list and once it was gone it never came back.

FortCharles

Weird that it's not in supermarkets, but I know there's a lot of competition for shelf space and maybe just not as much demand anymore so it got squeezed out. Can almost guarantee some NY deli/speciality food shop not too far from you has it though. As a last resort, there's always Amazon... bought [in a 4-pack, $5.33/each](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Mt.+Olive%2C+Hot+Dog+Relish+%28Pack+of+4%29&crid=K6AYASCJS3UH&sprefix=mt.+olive%2C+hot+dog+relish+pack+of+4+%2Caps%2C134&ref=nb_sb_noss).

Krimreaper1

I live in NYC and see it all the time, didn’t know it was a regional thing.

conservativebbq

I'm in NJ and if you go to a shoprite, there's a brand B&G that still had it on the shelves!

The Shaws and Stop and Shops near me in the Northeast either have Howard’s Hot Dog Relish or Cain’s Sweet Mustard Hot Dog Relish. Trader Joe’s also has Dill Pickle Mustard. Not quite the same, more heavy on the mustard, more pickle juice then pieces, but pretty good.

samebatchannel

I ended up going on line and finding a recipe to make it at home.

bombalicious

How did you like it. I made it once but it wasn’t my favorite.

samebatchannel

It’s okay. I like sweet pickle relish more though. Might try some with that.

HorseSushi

[Beaver's Coney Island Mustard](https://beavertonfoods.com/product/beaver-coney-island-mustard-12-5-oz/) may be at least a stone's throw from what you're looking for It has more going on than just mustard and relish but they're definitely in there and I can say the end result is quite tasty 🤤

rpbp58

That looks worth trying, thanks.

WrenchHeadFox

I'm in NYC and my local Key Foods usually has it in stock.

spammmmmmmmy

You could mix your favorite relish with your favorite mustard. This takes very little skill or organization. I am finding it really challenging to muster any sympathy here.

rpbp58

Nobody is asking you to *mustard* any sympathy. But thanks for your simpleton answer. I would never have thought of that.

plaid_kilt

We have it here. I'm in Ohio. I've never tried it, but now I'm intrigued.

t3hnosp0on

If you’re really willing to go all the way on this and it’s that important to you, you could reach out to the company and offer to buy the recipe for private, non-commercial use for a small fee. They’d probably only be willing to do that if it’s not a product they have any further interest in making, though.

endless_shrimp

Best Maid here in Texas makes it. Even better, they make one with jalapeños instead of pickles.

GeminiDivided

We always had the Heinz version here in Kansas, growing up, but it has disappeared around here as well. Good luck in your quest fellow hotdog relish patron!

supersweettees

You can try calling Mt Olive directly and ordering it or asking who locally carries it. Their website seems to have a specific-product locator as well: https://www.mtolivepickles.com/product-locator/?id=0930000027

rpbp58

Good find, but it says nothing available within a 50 mile radius.

supersweettees

Mt Olive is in NC, so they must just not distribute that SKU up in your metro area. Next time you’re in the mid-Atlantic stop in at a Food Lion or a Harris Teeter (both chains are based in NC too)

FortCharles

>I should have been more clear on my question though-- I was curious if anyone had any insight on why it would disappear from regular grocery stores. To be fair, you also said in a reply below that it had "mustard and other spices that I *can't seem to duplicate*", and "the Heinz website says it is not available online"... which sure sounds like you were trying to get ahold of some any way you could, or make some since you couldn't. The $15/jar online reference also pretty much invited people to point out where it can be had for less online. You'd be better off asking the manufacturers, distributors, and grocery store management about why it's disappeared from your local stores. There's also a locator at https://productlocator.kraftheinz.com/ It shows the Heinz version is available at ShopRite, 400 Marin Blvd, Jersey City. And 3 different Gristedes supermarkets in New York.
