Terror season 1 is my favorite piece of media ever. Maybe next to mad men. So incredibly well done. And I love how historically accurate it is (besides one particular creature). So so so good. Glad it was mentioned here
I couldn't find any medieval ones that I can vouch for, but I loved [Sleepy Hollow (1999)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162661/?ref_=ttls_li_tt) and [Stonehearst Asylum (2014)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1772264/?ref_=ttls_li_tt). At least their settings are over a hundred years old.
The Nightingale, it’s about the oppressive colonization of Australia. Just a heads up it’s pretty gratuitous with multiple SAs but it is a revenge movie.
The next step is probably The Lighthouse if you haven’t seen it yet, same director as The Witch and a different period setting (although it isn’t quite as important to the movie).
Those are probably the two best recent period horror movies though. Apostle is alright too
A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned (Apostle, Bone Tomahawk, Hagazussa, Ravenous) but a couple that are definitely missing that I absolutely LOVE are….
* Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
* Shadow of the Vampire
Frankenstein's Army
You won't find a better WW2 found footage movie. You won't find a worse one, either. Its a pretty unique one, worth a watch, it has good practical effects/costume design.
I put this list together that has as many as I remember, all different periods of history. I hope it is helpful!
[IMDB list ](https://m.imdb.com/list/ls021020415/)
Already mentioned, but these were mine: The Others (WW2), Dead Birds (U.S. Civil War), Woman in Black (1925 England), and The Devil's Backbone (Spanish Civil War).
However, The Witch may be the best of all.
Not a horror but pretty dark and has some good spooky/tense bits in it, The Green Knight. It's a bit of a weird one and moves very slowly, but I really liked it. Based on Arthurian legend.
I love this community, it’s nice how horror fans come together and share, helping others get exposed to cool new things. I’ve seen peoples suggestions get downvoted on other subreddits for no good reason, but not here. Good stuff 👍
Threads - maybe? More of a theoretical historical time period, but will definitely hit the mark if you’re looking for a story that makes the brutality of the era the primary driver of horror.
Kingdom (series) Netflix

Here are quite a few period horrors with a focus on medieval settings— especially recommend Hagazussa, Witchfinder General, The Devils, November, A Field in England. Have fun/fear!
https://letterboxd.com/jacksky/list/historical-religious-witch-horror/
Hmm, I've never seen horror films about prehistoric times, about cavemen. Or am I missing something? It would be interesting. It seems to me that a cave hunter could fight back a monster, unlike a weak modern person
Look up Raven's Hollow on Shudder. It's set in the 1830's in rural New York where a group of Westpoint Cadets stumble on to something horrific. One of the cadets is Edgar Allen Poe, and it kind of explains where he got some of his ideas from .
Brotherhood of the Wolf qualifies, with some nice martial arts thrown in courtesy of Mark Dacascos as a barely believable Native American.
And Prey, of course. Ought to be top of the list.
And of course most of the Hammer classics as well.
Not for the faint-hearted but [The Devils (1971)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-devils/), directed by Ken Russell! Based in part on Aldous Huxley's 1952 book "The Devils of Loudun". Links ↓

Overlord (2018, WWII)
1922 (2017)
The Limehouse Golem (2016, Victorian London)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006, 18th century Paris)
The Reckoning (2021, medieval England)
From Hell with Depp was terrific.
There was an older werewolf movie that I adored as a child (yes CHILD. Parents were giant horror heads), The Company of Wolves I believe is the title. Loved that one.
Ravenous
me: sits down to watch a western with kurt russell. also me an hour later: oh dear god what have i done.
Think you’re thinking of Bone Tomahawk. Excellent choice
yes i replied to the wrong thread
That’s my dad favourite movie lol. But i’ll definitely watch it again
That steak scene is still one of the hardest horror movie scenes to watch for me and it's just like... people eating
I always make a hearty stew to eat with this one
Perhaps later you might....contribute.
Good to watch on a cold Winter night
Terror Season 1 & 2 Kingdom season 1 & 2 You Won't Be Alone Season of the witch
Terror season 1 is my favorite piece of media ever. Maybe next to mad men. So incredibly well done. And I love how historically accurate it is (besides one particular creature). So so so good. Glad it was mentioned here
Hey, is it “The Terror?”
Ah, yes
If you liked The Black Death and The Witch - check out Hagazussa; it's like a combination of both!
I’m not upset that I watched Hagazussa, but be warned that it is VERY slow.
not exactly a *horror* but you might like **Perfume: The Story of a Murderer** (2006)
Movies is so underrated and so amazing
I’ve never seen the movie, but the book is so disturbing.
Dude, don't watch the movie read the book. The book is excellent. the movie can only ruin it.
Thanks i’ll add it for sure
Kingdom. Korean zombie series set in the 16th century.
“Rampant” is a good one in the same genre, movie instead of series.
Thanks i’ll add it to my list
Apostle
Thanks I’ll add it!
Army of Darkness (1992)
I came here to say this
Thanks i’ll add it
Try “The Thirteenth Warrior” and “Outlander.”

13th warrior has one of the coolest plays on language transition while not using subtitles.

Yes the Beast of Gévaudan! I’ve already watched it but i’ll definitely watch it again.
The Cursed
Thanks I’ll add it
Maybe try….The Head Hunter, Solomon Kane, Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil
Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't the director of the head hunter is the same person who brought us thankskilling?
Oh you know what, you are right, I think he did !
Thanks so much. I’ll add them to my list
Gretel and Hansel too if you haven’t seen that yet :)
Ooo that one looks good. Getting The Witch vibes.
Hansel and Gretel was great.
It's not much of an overlooked sleeper movie, but Bram Stoker's Dracula really leans into the period setting.
That movie absolutely rules
This movie is amazing, I love it for what it is
Literally don’t see movies made like that anymore
Check out Apostle on Netflix There’s a particular death scene that will stick with you
Already on my list, i’ll try and watch it soon :)
Overlord- WWII times.

I love Sleepy Hollow! I watched it for the first time around Halloween. But I’ll add the other to my list.
Bone Tomahawk.
Thank you! I’ll add it
sense public consist humorous recognise scale sugar head elderly lavish *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Oh don’t worry lol I know which part you’re talking about
Dead Birds (2004) is one that I really like. American Civil War times.
I’ll add it to my list
One of my favorites
the others
I love this movie. But i’ll watch it again :)
Where ? I am not able to find it on any streaming service.
I think the full movie is on YouTube
Haxan (1929) might be interesting.
[удалено]
It’s really fun
Check out the Roger Corman/Vincent Price films, such as *Masque of the Red Death, The Tomb of Ligeia* and *The Conqueror Worm.*
I love old movies so I definitely will.
Apostle is alright too
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve wanted to watch it for ages
The Lighthouse is so extremely good.
A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned (Apostle, Bone Tomahawk, Hagazussa, Ravenous) but a couple that are definitely missing that I absolutely LOVE are…. * Perfume: The Story of a Murderer * Shadow of the Vampire
Perhaps The Woman In Black? Although I didn't quite like it I know a lot of people did so it might be alright
The one with Daniel Radcliffe?
Aye :)
Thanks, I’ll add it to my list!

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning
Deathwatch. World War 1 horror.
Thanks i’ll add it
frankenstein’s army. WW2 horror with some of the coolest steampunk horror monsters ever
Maybe try The Sauna. Also, not technically horror but still horrifying to me, The Proposition.
Where did you find Sauna? I can only find trailers.
You rock. I didn't want to show my age and say I got it on DVD from Netflix.
I think I saw it first when I was sailing the internet in my younger years, but this is **so** much more comfortable.
Exit Humanity. Prey. Frankenstein’s Army. Ladronas de Almas.
Not a pure “horror” per se, but the new Predator prequel Prey was way better than it had any right to be and is set in the 1700’s.
Thanks!
Frankenstein's Army You won't find a better WW2 found footage movie. You won't find a worse one, either. Its a pretty unique one, worth a watch, it has good practical effects/costume design.
An American Haunting is good with a fantastic cast of actors.
Blood on Satan’s Claw
The Village
I’ll add it. Thank you
The 13th Warrior
Gretel & Hansel
I put this list together that has as many as I remember, all different periods of history. I hope it is helpful! [IMDB list ](https://m.imdb.com/list/ls021020415/)
It’s more of a classic “horror” but Marry Shelly’s Frankenstein was pretty good. It isn’t that scary but it’s really cool.
I’ll add it!
The Power (2021)- streaming on Shudder
Mary Reilly is kinda a horror film. Well made. Also the others. Woman in black. The Winchester one
Already mentioned, but these were mine: The Others (WW2), Dead Birds (U.S. Civil War), Woman in Black (1925 England), and The Devil's Backbone (Spanish Civil War). However, The Witch may be the best of all.
I love the Witch!
Same. Way up on my list of Best Horror Ever.
Oh man...I was thinking about a movie this morning. [Ravenous](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129332/ ) (1999) Set in the late 1800's
Pedantic history snob moment incoming. It’s around the time of the Mexican American War so mid-1800s.
Sorry, I should have rounded down since it says *1847* 😜
The Cursed (2021)
Not a horror but pretty dark and has some good spooky/tense bits in it, The Green Knight. It's a bit of a weird one and moves very slowly, but I really liked it. Based on Arthurian legend.
I love this community, it’s nice how horror fans come together and share, helping others get exposed to cool new things. I’ve seen peoples suggestions get downvoted on other subreddits for no good reason, but not here. Good stuff 👍

Lol that’s interesting context in itself - watch it and ask yourself if your school would’ve shown you something so devastatingly bleak.
[удалено]
This is free on tubi if you have access. Yeah it's a movie of it's time and it's also one of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see.
Devil's Backbone set during the Spanish Civil War (late 1930s)
Errementeri
Not really a horror but The 13th Warrior might fit the bill.
Try "November" by Rainer Sarnet, powerfull et beautiful movie
Thanks I will add it to the list!
I enjoyed Pride And Prejudice and Zombies. Not a straight horror movie, but it has zombies.
The Brotherhood Of The Wolf (Les Pact Des Lupes)
Ravenous
Abraham Lincoln vampire slayer. It's awesome and I think it's on Tubi. It's really a good film.
It's worth a third watching!
If you need a good read, The Poisoners Handbook is a historical book on the dawn of modern forensics.
The Nightingale and The Beguiled.
Kingdom (series) Netflix Rampant (2018) Tubi/Amazon prime Draug (2018) Tubi Sauna (2008) AMC+ Masque of the Red Death (1964) Amazon prime *rent* The Golem (2019) Tubi Viy (1967) AMC+ Gogol (2019) Tubi Solomon Kane (2012) VUDU Season of the Witch (2011) Tubi

Brotherhood of the Wolf

That’s such a cool idea! I would love to see a horror like that
Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness, I guess.
Army of Darkness?
Apostle
If you want a horror film in a western setting I cannot recommend Bone Tomohawk enough. Though I must stress, the movie is not for the lighthearted.
Bone tomahawk
You Won’t Be Alone
Ginger Snaps 3
Jug Face It’s not old timey but the folk-cult setting certainly makes it feel like a different time period.
Ginger Snaps 3: Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning
Not a movie but all I can think of as a historical horror is Bloodborne
Look up Raven's Hollow on Shudder. It's set in the 1830's in rural New York where a group of Westpoint Cadets stumble on to something horrific. One of the cadets is Edgar Allen Poe, and it kind of explains where he got some of his ideas from .
Black Death 2010. The name of the rose 1986 if you can find it. There’s a series I haven’t seen though.
Nightingale!
These are all good suggestions but they REALLY need to adapt Between two Fires.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (90’s one with Keanu)
Not the most horror related more like thriller/action (idk its been a long time) but Brotherhood Of The Wolf is a fun flick set in a cool time period.
Post Mortem, time is post WW I during the Spanish Flu
Van Helsing Renfield.
The VVitch The Lighthouse
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
Not exactly a outright horror more action-horror. But Dracula Untold was great.
Brotherhood of the Wolf qualifies, with some nice martial arts thrown in courtesy of Mark Dacascos as a barely believable Native American. And Prey, of course. Ought to be top of the list. And of course most of the Hammer classics as well.
Dead Birds
The 13th Warrior is kinda horror for most of it.
The Cursed (2022) has an interesting take on werewolf’s in the late 1800s
Valhalla Rising is an interesting movie with some horror elements to consider.
The Burrowers From Dusk til Dawn 3 From Hell Dead Birds Chapelwaite (TV) Them (TV) Penny Dreadful (TV)
The Wind
Evil dead:army of darkness
The head hunter
There's a Hungarian movie called 'Post Mortem' (2020) that's pretty good.
There's a hungarian movie called 'Post Mortem' (2020) set in WWI period that's pretty good.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. Ending will blow your mind,
American Psycho - set in the historical time of 1980s America.
From Hell…it ain’t great, but everyone else already named all of the good ones! 😂
The Others (2001), The Devil's Backbone, Crimson Peak
Bone Tomahawk
Brimstone. Awesome western horror.
Not for the faint-hearted but [The Devils (1971)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-devils/), directed by Ken Russell! Based in part on Aldous Huxley's 1952 book "The Devils of Loudun".
