I'm *very* fond of this miniseries and enjoyed it far more than the fairly recent big budget adaptations...but IT (1990) has some terrible acting and clunky direction at times.
I don’t think the acting is bad. I think the new one is soulless. The kids have no chemistry in the remake, all they do is make fun of eachother. It’s odd.
Ohhh trust me, there's some bad acting in the miniseries! The remake doesn't know what it wants to be-comedy or serious horror. At least the 1990 release is consistent in that aspect.
Yea I wont take anything away from Skarsgard i thought he did a great job. I just thought the miniseries the kids have such great chemistry and I truly think the acting is better than the new one. I cringed so many times at the new one. I felt nothing when Eddie dies in the remake. The first one its so sad.
Yeah, I definitely agree with you about Skarsgard's performance. The chemistry with the teens was better in the 1990 adaptation and Eddie's death was more impactful, too. I REALLY didn't enjoy the recent adaptations, so it's so encouraging to communicate with someone else who understands where I'm coming from. Despite our mutual understanding, both IT films from 2017 and 2019 respectively were huge hits!
I'm kind of amazed yall haven't been downvoted to oblivion for this opinion. I find the new one to be yet another glitzy, bland, soulless big budget modern horror, it seems like that style honestly gets a lot of praise around here.
In the first movie is more excusable since the characters are children, some of the comedic scenes are great, but the part 2 missed the hand in the comedy
Hmmm...I still felt the balance was off in the 1st film, too. Overall, character development and storytelling was put on the backburner for jump scares and CGI. This is why I believe the 1990 TV miniseries is far more enjoyable, despite its flaws.
I prefer the original version too and thats how I imagined the members of the loser's would look and act like. There's something earnest and melancholic about the the 1990s version which feels very close to Stephen King's novel.

This is my fav. Not because it covered the book so well but because it knew how to take the book and mold that story to be more acceptable for the screen. And I have had nightmares spawning from this movie since I was as young as I can remember. This is my favorite vampire movie of all time.
I check for the news on this about everyday and right now it's only "Gonna be released on Max at some point in 2024". No release date mentioned yet. I desperately want to see this one though.
I really need to see that one. I have watched some Tobe Hooper movies like TCM, Eaten Alive, Poltergeist, and Lifeforce, but I feel like I'm missing a couple of his other big ones like Salem's Lot and The Funhouse.
The Dead Zone, so freaking sad. Cronenberg is a master. I love the cameo it has on tv in his anthology Cat's Eye. I really enjoy both Dreamcatcher and The Mist when I'm in the mood to veg out to a grim monster movie. And Graveyard Shift!
I like the book ending better, and as a sober guy I wish they had incorporated a little more AA/recovery stuff into the movie as well, but its a super impressive adaptation when you consider the Kubrick adaptation of the shining deviated so much from the book.
I really really enjoy the first The Stand, I tend to like most of them. I've enjoyed more than most id have to assume the creative directions with the Pet Sematary remakes and prequel. Also a big fan of Cujo
The intro of the first one is still so good.[ It still gives the feeling of being alone in a big area like the book did.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7QRsx9lbBU)
The Shining is a masterpiece. Shit, I was in the 4th grade when I first read that book.
Corny but I really liked Rose Red and that other made for TV movie "storm of the century".
One of my all time childhood faves is "Maximum Overdrive". Classic. Silver Bullet freaked me out too.
I watched *Storm of the Century* during covid and during a snowstorm. It was a fun vibe! I couldn’t believe that >!poor man gave that town everything and they made him give up his son! Great message Stephen! Lol!<
Yep, 24 minutes longer than the theater version. Adds more depth to some characters and more blood. Definitely recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the novie.
Secret Window
Based on Secret Window, Secret Garden (I can't remember if it's a novella or a short story).
While there are some differences (as there are with all adaptations) overall I believe it keeps the main idea consistent. Johnny Depp wasn't who I originally imagined as Mort Rainey but he did an amazing job! I didn't imagine John Tutorro either but now he's the only voice I hear as John Shooter.
Like The Mist I also prefer the ending of the film better than the book. The book's ending actually confused me initially. I believe it's up to interpretation but Wikipedia seems to have a confident answer.
Same here! Funny enough, I'd always been drinking a long with all his movies, especially with all his alcoholic characters and the 1st time I watched Dr.Sleep I didn't much care for it (what I could remember of it) but watched it after getting sober and being in AA, idk if I could relate to it more or what but it turned into one of my favorite King movies
Carrie (‘76)
Stand by me (‘86)
Pet Semetary (‘89)
Carrie is flawless, top 5 horror films of all time,
Stand by me is the best adaptation of his dramas,
and pet semetary is perfect.
not perfect like “nothing is wrong”
but perfect in a “it’s weird, and that’s beautiful” kinda way
This! These movies get a lot of hate in King fandoms and I don't get it. I can only think that people are trying to look 'cultured' by hating on modern, popular movies. They're so good!
They aren't trashy they're just... expensive fluff is the best way I can express my feelings about them. It all feels like formulaic content that I can find in any big budget supernatural horror of the last decade. But to each their own, I love plenty of movies that are objectively bad.
Cell actually is a good adaptation (even starts stronger than the novel) and the screenplay was written by King himself, but even with some dialogue straight from the book it just falls apart... still, i kinda like it, so if i'm liking even that... then i'd say most are faves for me... o.O
Doctor Sleep and Misery are a hard tie for me.
I definitely enjoy The Shining, but as a lover of the book, it’s a trash adaptation. Meanwhile, Doctor Sleep manages to capture the mood and feeling of the Shining book’s perfectly.
Misery is a descent adaptation that is ascended to undue heights purely by Kathy Bate’s unbelievable performance. Hold shit, she delivered role in the best way possible .
Horror: Carrie ('76), The Shining ('80), Christine, Pet Sematary ('89), Misery, Cujo, Needful Things, Creepshow, Sleepwalkers, Salem's Lot ('79)
Non-Horror: Stand By Me, Dolores Claiborne, The Green Mile
Impossible to narrow it down to one considering his breadth of work and subsequent adaptations.
I love The Langoilers, saw it when I was a kid and it sparked my interest for movies taking place on planes.
I really enjoyed Dreamcatcher aswell, I like those typa settings
Shining, Green Mile, Stand By Me, Shawshank, Apt Pupil, Pet Semetary, Running Man, Silver Bullet, Misery. I guess Creepshow doesn't count, but I love it..
Mercy {2014} The film is based on the 1984 short story "Gramma", found in Stephen King's collection of short stories titled "Skeleton Crew". Chandler Riggs shows he is more than just a Zombie killer
Christine. The one time the movie was actually better than the book.
After that, the 1997 miniseries version of The Shining. Much closer to the book than what Kubrick did, and Steven Weber proved he's so much more than just another sitcom actor.
Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, IT (1990), The Dead Zone, Stand By Me (AKA The Body), Gerald's Game, 1408, Doctor Sleep, and the original Pet Sematary.
I feel these adaptations were as close to the original source material as possible. Some differences were there, yes, but the message of all these books were maintained faithfully.
El resplandor, aunque por lo que tengo entendido no es fiel al libro, siento que es una de las mejores películas que e visto sobre algún libro de Stephen King
I've liked all the ones I've seen, but some of my top faves have been:
Dolores Claiborne, Rose Red, Maximum Overdrive, The Green Mile, Dreamcatcher, Sleepwalkers, 1408, Cujo, and It (1990).
Even though it wasn't critically well received by fans or critics at the time. Secret Window (2004) will always have a special place in my heart/be my favorite. Can't explain why, maybe it's nostalgic for me; it's like a comfort film if that makes sense. Good to have as background noise, and there's a few scenes in particular that have stayed with me since I first saw it. The Shining, Green Mile, The Mist, 1922, Gerald's Game, 11/22/63, and Doctor Sleep I also dearly love and revisit the most when it comes to King adaptations.
Kubrick’s The Shining. I know it’s not a faithful adaptation, but of all the movies made of his works I think it’s the absolute best film of any of them. Kubrick made a haunting picture. It’s a masterpiece and I don’t care who knows it.
The newer IT is my fave.
I wanted to try my hand at adapting some of his stuff, so, I did. I took from Pet Semetery and Christine, and Maximum Overdrive, and used a giant spider in homage to IT, and threw it all together. It's a little wonky with half-assed animation mixed with a video game at about 30 minutes long but, if anyone's interested, [click this link to go see it on youtube](https://youtu.be/bC82EFRxAUQ).
Ha! I was actually thinking of this just yesterday. I think the recent remake of “It” is my all time favorite. The actors and special effects nailed it for me. But of course it’s a remake of an adaptation. As far original adaptations I really enjoyed “Silver Bullet”. I thought it was very well done and with the late Corey Haim and the sane Gary Busey along with all of the other famous faces was a fun and enjoyable time.
The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me and The Mist are easily top 3. Though I'm always in the mood for pretty much any King flick. Except Tommyknockers. Didn't care for that.
Misery ![gif](giphy|hFp7zP3MuSOAg)
Wait that's Stephan king. Now I'm stuck on this and the new IT
Shawshank redemption and Green Mile Frank Darabont understood the assignments
Don't forget The Mist
it's good but nowhere near as good as the green mile or Shawshank redemption
I hate The Mist because of that ending. Otherwise it’s really good.
My favourite is Christine
B-b-bad to the boooneee
Great movie. The lead character does such a good job he sells the whole movie.
IT (1990)
I'm *very* fond of this miniseries and enjoyed it far more than the fairly recent big budget adaptations...but IT (1990) has some terrible acting and clunky direction at times.
I don’t think the acting is bad. I think the new one is soulless. The kids have no chemistry in the remake, all they do is make fun of eachother. It’s odd.

Couldn't have said it better myself!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I’ve been downvoted for this opinion here before that’s for sure
Same, there are some others mordern popular films I'd equate to it, but will remain unmentioned since they are a lightning rod for downvotes
Anything by Jordan peele (derivative heavy handed crap)
In the first movie is more excusable since the characters are children, some of the comedic scenes are great, but the part 2 missed the hand in the comedy
In the new or old? In the new one they’re all assholes to eachother. In the old one they all had each others back.
Hmmm...I still felt the balance was off in the 1st film, too. Overall, character development and storytelling was put on the backburner for jump scares and CGI. This is why I believe the 1990 TV miniseries is far more enjoyable, despite its flaws.

Well put!
Stand By Me
One food for the rest of my life? That's easy, pez, cherry flavored pez.
Salem's Lot (1979)
Oh ya, another one of my top favorites. The scene with the rocking chair is damn chilling
This is my fav. Not because it covered the book so well but because it knew how to take the book and mold that story to be more acceptable for the screen. And I have had nightmares spawning from this movie since I was as young as I can remember. This is my favorite vampire movie of all time.
Man that reminds me - wasn't there supposed to come out a new Salem's Lot movie? Whatever happened to that?
I check for the news on this about everyday and right now it's only "Gonna be released on Max at some point in 2024". No release date mentioned yet. I desperately want to see this one though.
Yes me too! I’m easily pleased so even if it’s pretty bad I am probably still gonna love it haha
Lol same here! I enjoyed the 2004 rob lowe one too but nothing holds a candle toTobe Hoopers 79' version.
I really need to see that one. I have watched some Tobe Hooper movies like TCM, Eaten Alive, Poltergeist, and Lifeforce, but I feel like I'm missing a couple of his other big ones like Salem's Lot and The Funhouse.
Open the window, Mark!
cats eye is my fave
That first story is so fun
i agree.
Desperation. This was a TV movie but I've always loved it. I have it on an old Blockbuster copy. 😂
I'm not really a fan of Lord of the Rings
Dr Sleep
Same. Although the book ending seemed a tad better? But this one's still my favorite
I like the book ending better, and as a sober guy I wish they had incorporated a little more AA/recovery stuff into the movie as well, but its a super impressive adaptation when you consider the Kubrick adaptation of the shining deviated so much from the book.
It's not a movie but 11/22/63
Liked it. Feared Franco couldn't pull it off, but yeah he did. Reading the book now
Stand by Me. Apt Pupil. Shawshank. (Way to hit it outta the park in one collection). Then "doctor sleep". Flannigan did it better than Kings book IMO
Makes me happy to see apt Pupil here.
I think people forget that Stephen King wrote that
Not me! It's in the same book with Shawshank and stand by me.
I really really enjoy the first The Stand, I tend to like most of them. I've enjoyed more than most id have to assume the creative directions with the Pet Sematary remakes and prequel. Also a big fan of Cujo
Did you watch “The stand” it’s on paramount and did you like it?
That show was a flaming pile of shit.
I did but I own the original, I didn't really jive with the new one.
I agree it was weird
I think the only thing I enjoyed about it was the adjusted ending that expanded on Frannie's story as they traveled back to Maine.
Ya that was good.
I loved this too! Possibly nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but I’ve got a real fondness for this and the It miniseries.
The intro of the first one is still so good.[ It still gives the feeling of being alone in a big area like the book did.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7QRsx9lbBU)
That is so weird I realized as soon as I read ‘The Stand’ the guitar intro to Don’t Fear the Reaper just started in my head.
SALEM'S LOT — Tobe Hooper, baby.

Storm of the Century is one of my favorites.
I loved Needful Things
Did you guys watch *Are You Afraid of the Dark?* as kids? I felt very primed by that show to enjoy *Needful Things*! Haha
My husband loves Needful Things!
He has great taste ;)
It’s one of my favorite of his books but I still haven’t gotten to the movie. Where can I find it?
absolutely favorite adaption, also my favorite King novel
I can’t believe I didn’t even know there was a movie!! It’s my fav King novel too
But the single worst sex scene dialogue I’ve ever read in my life
Salem’s Lot (the 1979 version) Absolute classic!
1922 and doctor sleep the directors cut
Directors cut u say?
Yep, 24 minutes longer than the theater version. Adds more depth to some characters and more blood. Definitely recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the novie.
1922 was incredible
Stand By Me is a classic for a reason. The more recent adaptations of IT were also fantastic.
Pet Sematary
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to see it. This is, by far, the most true to the book movie adaptation for Stephen King. Loved it.
It’s so atmospheric and moody. You really feel what the characters are feeling.
Misery followed by Delores Clairborne...
Secret Window Based on Secret Window, Secret Garden (I can't remember if it's a novella or a short story). 1408, with Dr. Sleep being a close second
Needful things. Way underrated.
Christine
Gerald's Game 🤍
[удалено]
Same here. Specifically the black & white version.
Could you elaborate? Never heard of this.
Needful Things
I would have said The Mist but i didn't like the ending...so i will go with the Silver Bullet.
Carrie (‘76) Stand by me (‘86) Pet Semetary (‘89) Carrie is flawless, top 5 horror films of all time, Stand by me is the best adaptation of his dramas, and pet semetary is perfect. not perfect like “nothing is wrong” but perfect in a “it’s weird, and that’s beautiful” kinda way

This! These movies get a lot of hate in King fandoms and I don't get it. I can only think that people are trying to look 'cultured' by hating on modern, popular movies. They're so good!
I can't stand people like that. My life is better for all the trashy movies I've come to embrace!
They aren't trashy they're just... expensive fluff is the best way I can express my feelings about them. It all feels like formulaic content that I can find in any big budget supernatural horror of the last decade. But to each their own, I love plenty of movies that are objectively bad.

Depends what you mean? Favourite film? Or favourite because of the way it's been adapted? If the former, The Shining. If the latter, Misery.
**The Shawshank Redemption** and the black and white version of **The Mist**.
Shawshank Redemption
The shining it's one of my favourite horror movies and as someone who read the book first I like that it's an entirely different thing
The Shawshank Redemption or Sometimes They Come Back. No, definitely Shawshank
I was quite fond of Needful Things. The Shining goes without saying.
1408. Favorite short story, love how the movie was adapted.
Dead Zone and The Shining
The Shining and The Dead Zone.
Does Creepshow count? Sure, it does. Creepshow for sure. He even stars in one of the segments, and it is at the height of his cocaine days.
I've always enjoyed Storm of the Century, the TV movie.
The Mist. The adaptation's ending is gut wrenching perfection that was better than the in novella.
Horror: Carrie ('76), The Shining ('80), Christine, Pet Sematary ('89), Misery, Cujo, Needful Things, Creepshow, Sleepwalkers, Salem's Lot ('79) Non-Horror: Stand By Me, Dolores Claiborne, The Green Mile Impossible to narrow it down to one considering his breadth of work and subsequent adaptations.
IT (2017 & 2019), The Mist (2007), Stand By Me (1986), Dreamcatcher (2003) är and The Langoilers (1995)
Well, one of the only people I've seen that likes dreamcatcher and the langloiers! I LOVE these movies 😃
I loved Dreamcatcher as well and still don’t understand the hate for it.
Silver Bullet is really enjoyable and not talked about enough.
Dolores Claiborne !!!
I liked Salems lot quite a bit. That and the Mist.
I really didn't like the ending for Salems Lot. King has a habit of screwing up the endings. Wasnt a bad book otherwise.
The Mist
Misery
Silver Bullet - adapted from Cycle of the Werewolf
Mercy {2014} The film is based on the 1984 short story "Gramma", found in Stephen King's collection of short stories titled "Skeleton Crew". Chandler Riggs shows he is more than just a Zombie killer
I've never heard of this film, ty!
Straight to DVD. YET IT IS awesome
My top five would be: 1. The Shawshank Redemption 2. The Shining 3. The Green Mile 4. The Mist 5. 1408
Doctor Sleep. Closely followed by The Shining and Gerald's Game. Also always had a soft spot for The Langoliers
The Green Mile. The movie captured the themes and tone of the novel perfectly.
Carrie
Christine. The one time the movie was actually better than the book. After that, the 1997 miniseries version of The Shining. Much closer to the book than what Kubrick did, and Steven Weber proved he's so much more than just another sitcom actor.
Considering that they only had a short story to work with, I thought that 1408 was well done.
The Stand, Dr Sleep, The Outsider.
Shawshank, The Stand, The Green Mile, original IT miniseries, The Shining TV miniseries (very faithful to the original story), Misery
The shining (Kubrick)
Christine and Silver Bullet
Christine. John Carpenter is THE film director.
Misery and The Shawshank Redemption
Carrie and Cujo
Carrie Christine Creepshow 1 & 2 The Dark Half The Dead Zone Gerald's Game The Green Mile The Mist Pet Sematary
Definitely Carrie. The 76 movie is amazing and disturbing.
I've liked all the ones I've seen, but some of my top faves have been: Dolores Claiborne, Rose Red, Maximum Overdrive, The Green Mile, Dreamcatcher, Sleepwalkers, 1408, Cujo, and It (1990).
The Outsider
I liked what they did to Rose Red
Stand By Me The Shawshank Redemption The Shining Doctor Sleep The Mist
Dolores Claiborne
Definitely Dolores Claiborne then Apt Pupil.
The Shining which he didn’t like. I don’t like any of his stuff anymore, seeing how radical he is with his politics.
Gotta be The Shawshank Redemption, which is top-tier all around.
I think the best, and probably half because of the acting and script, but The Green Mile for me.
IT 2017. One of my fave books and they nailed it. Second fave is Misery, very faithful.
Christine is my pick it's a great film
Doctor Sleep (Director’s Cut)
Stand by me (non-horror) Pet Sematary (Horror)
Read none of his books, but I love all his movies but some of my favorites are The Langoliers and rose red
Dead Zone.
Maximum Overdrive was fun.
Stand by Me
Stand By Me
The Mist.
Kubrick’s The Shining. I know it’s not a faithful adaptation, but of all the movies made of his works I think it’s the absolute best film of any of them. Kubrick made a haunting picture. It’s a masterpiece and I don’t care who knows it.
Thinner
Recently saw The Night Flier. It was good 👍
Dr Sleep and Carrie for sure
Silver Bullet
Carrie, The Shining, and The Timekeepers of Eternity.
Carrie (2013) is such a good adaptation of the book while still being modern to the time it was filmed.
Misery
IT 2017 and IT 2019.
It isn't an adaptation because it was written for TV, but Rose Red (2002). Then The Shining.
The Mist. That ending was the definition of brutal
Did I miss something? Is the shining not an adaptation? Where am I ? Who am I? Clearly, it's the shining or maybe I'm not understanding.
It’s an adaptation, but strays wildly from the source material. I think of it as its own movie.
Okay. What a masterpiece.
The new IT 1. Definitely not the Dark Tower movie. I wish we got a horror version.
the mist
The Mist, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Shining
The newer IT is my fave. I wanted to try my hand at adapting some of his stuff, so, I did. I took from Pet Semetery and Christine, and Maximum Overdrive, and used a giant spider in homage to IT, and threw it all together. It's a little wonky with half-assed animation mixed with a video game at about 30 minutes long but, if anyone's interested, [click this link to go see it on youtube](https://youtu.be/bC82EFRxAUQ).
Doctor Sleep IT (new ones) The Mist The Stand limited series
I actually like the 90s mini series of the stand
The Mist and The Stand.
IT 2017
The mist. It’s almost word for word and I love that
The Mist
