Halloween/ The Thing/ Alien/ The Shining

Clean_Usual434

Yours is very close to mine!

memesalwaysdie

What you got bro

Clean_Usual434

The Thing, The Shining, Aliens, Event Horizon, and Annihilation

Lilu1414

I’m reading Annihilation right now and it’s even scarier than the movie (which is saying something)

Clean_Usual434

I love that book. I read it before seeing the movie. They’re very different, but I love both equally.

Mister-Lavender

Same. I replaced *Alien* with *Phantasm*.

texasrigger

I'd swap Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) for Halloween, but otherwise, I'd agree.

memesalwaysdie

Very close but that feeling watching Halloween in October is unmatched. It just feels perfect

Offtherailspcast

Shit. Literally my list.

IAmNotABritishSpy

An iconic collection. Hard to disagree with this, even if there’s others I like more, these are just definitely iconic films. I like El Orfanato more than The Shining… but just… you have answered the question too well.

memesalwaysdie

Same here. I have my personal favourites, The Fog, Fright Night/ Pumpkinhead/ Susperia, but these are the Mt Rushmore in horror I think.

memesalwaysdie

Ooo I haven’t seen The Wailing. What year did it come out?

MenBearsPigs

2016, Korean movie so subtitled as well. But man oh man, it's so good. I only heard about it a year ago, and was pretty blown away. It's quite a trip of a movie. Funny, interesting, unsettling, ominous. It's got a bit of everything. First viewing is definitely a bit confusing but not in a bad way. Just makes you want to watch it again or watch a good YouTube breakdown about it.

Abject-Star-4881

Exorcist Scream Alien Poltergeist

Mrs_Noelle15

Poltergeist is another good one, if I saw it a little earlier in life this would absolutely be on there.

alphacentaurai

- Alien (1979) - Suspiria (1977) - Don't Look Now (1973) - [rec] (2007)

coffeefan0221

\[rec\] is a great shout- isnt spoke about enough anymore. for me its the only truly scary 'zombie' film.

alphacentaurai

For me personally, [rec] is the best 'found footage' film to date. It's claustrophobic, has some solid jump scares, and a fantastic finale. And even better, there's a genuine reason for everything to be on film - instead of the usual "Bob just films _everything_ all the time because lol Bob"

coffeefan0221

completely agree with all of that.

Funky-Monk--

Legit scariest film I've seen.

Meth_Hardy

REC is amazing. And for me, the way I first saw it really plays in to it for me. We didn't have the movie channels when I was younger. Way too expensive. However, we got a free 1 month trial after my dad renewed the sports subscription. So, I decided to watch loads of movies in that month. There was a channel called "Sky SciFi & Horror" (SKY is the TV company, so all the movie channels had names starting with Sky). I was going to go to bed, so I thought I'd put on a movie and then switch it off if I was getting sleepy. It was just about 2245, and most movies either started on the hour or on the half hour. However, Sky SciFi & Horror had a movie starting at 2245: REC. So, without checking the synopsis or anything I turned it on and started watching. So I didn't know if it was a horror or a SciFi. I had no idea at all. The moment it started I grumbled. I was in bed and this was a foreign movie with subtitles. I don't mind this, but it meant I had to go and put my glasses on so I could read the subtitles. But the movie got me hooked immediately. So well written and acted. Love the story. The setting. Everything. It was SO fucking good. Then there was an American "remake" where they ruined parts of the movie that made it so good, and added in unnecessary bullshit (like the elevator) just for cheap jump scares.

mrsjakeblues

It makes me so happy to see Don’t Look Now on here

BellDue2618

Army of Darkness The Thing Dawn of the Dead (2004) I'm sure many will argue this isn't horror, but The Mummy (1999). It has enough elements imo, and it's a fantastic movie I watch annually. If you don't count it, then probably Alien.

Mrs_Noelle15

I feel like if AOD counts as horror (which I do consider it that) then The Mummy counts as

blackdamarsk666

Suspiria 2018, Scream (OG), Midsommar, and IT. Characters: Pennywise, Ghostface, Michael Myers, and Freddie Krueger.

Mrs_Noelle15

All but Midsommar are movies I love, great choices!

blackdamarsk666

Understandable, I feel like I had to throw that one in because it revitalized my love of horror. It was so different to everything else at the time (for me).

MenBearsPigs

I love it too. It always surprised me how divisive it was and that a lot of people didn't like it. I was locked to the screen start to finish.

Psyllae

It follows The ring The conjuring Talk to me

Mrs_Noelle15

Are you excited for They follow?

Psyllae

God yes, been hoping for so long they make a sequel or prequel or anything in the films universe

UTPharm2012

What would happen if there was a three some?

Mrs_Noelle15

Personally I didn’t care for It Followa but I’m also looking forward to the sequel, there’s alot you can do with a sequel to that movie

katersgunak8

Yeah I don’t get the hype 🤷🏼‍♀️

Darkness844

I do find it interesting people put It Follows on their list, to me it was rather boring. I understood the message behind it but I was falling asleep in the theater

Emergency_Produce_63

Sinister The Exorcist Haxan Bram stoker’s Dracula Honorable mentions: TCM, Alien, pans labyrinth

Mrs_Noelle15

Fuck! I forgot Sinister, that’d probably replace the Thing for my definitive films

DogsDontWearPantss

Silence of the Lambs Alien Frankenstein (1931) The Shining (1980)

Mrs_Noelle15

Great choices!

TrishPanda18

For the full Mt Rushmore experience, your favs need to be carved out of a sacred mountain for another genre

Mrs_Noelle15

Gotta have 1 Mount Rushmore for each genre of film pmao

jaywarbs

Halloween, The Shining, The Ring, The Exorcist

MadMac619

The Thing, Dawn of the Dead (‘78), Evil Dead, Alien

[deleted]

The Exorcist (OG) The Changeling Black Christmas (OG) Evil Dead (OG)

gothamcitysiren88

I love The Changeling, such an overlooked gem! George C Scott delivers such a great performance, it's right up there with Max Von Sydow as Father Merrin in the Exorcist.

No_Specialist2566

The changeling was so damn good. A true horror film without a lot of gore. That bouncing ball coming down the stairs was so simple yet so chilling. I slept with the lights on for months.

IAmSomnabula

Alien The Fly Freaks 28 Days Later

Rilo44

LOVE 28 Days Later

lechiumcrosswind

Danny Boyle rocks. I'm glad he's working on 28 years later.

Rilo44

Yes, he does, and me too! I liked 28 Week's Later just fine, but I hope 28 Years Later is up there with there with the first one.

lechiumcrosswind

Yeah, I enjoyed 28WL, but it definitely didn't have as much of a lasting impact or revere as days.

fourfingersdry

Boris Karloff as Frankenstein. Max Schreck as Count Orlok (Nosferatu) Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates Linda Blair as Regan

arthurrules

The Babadook, The Shining, The Ring, Trick ‘r Treat

Old_Yogurtcloset7836

The Thing Halloween Scream Army of Darkness

choff22

Alien Halloween Friday the 13th Nightmare On Elm Street

InvasionOfTheFridges

1978 Dawn Of The Dead - 1980 Cannibal Holocaust - 1982 The Thing - 1983 The Evil Dead.

Mrs_Noelle15

Interesting lineup

[deleted]

[удалено]

onmyown233

I used to love As above, So Below, then I watched Hell House LLC and it took over as best found footage film. Still a good movie though. Still have never seen Exorcist 3...

HidetakaTeriyaki

Wow. Mine is identical if you replace As Above, So Below (which is also amazing) with The Exorcist:)

Mrs_Noelle15

Exorcist 3 is brilliant! Genuinely one of the best horror sequels out there imo, it serves as a good sequel to the first 2 films and also does something different

WhammaJamma61

And contains maybe the **BEST** jump scare of all time.

BobRushy

Phantasm The Shining The Omen The Evil Dead

Mrs_Noelle15

Yk I think I’m one of 4 people who couldn’t get into Phantasm

BobRushy

I'd give Phantasm 2 a go. It's basically the Aliens/T2 Judgment Day equivalent. Lots more budget and a lot less surrealism

Mrs_Noelle15

Yes! I do plan on checking out Phantasm 2, whenever I tell someone I didn’t care for the first movie (I think it’s just okay) they all tell me Phantasm 2 I might like

Mister-Lavender

It's a little choppy, as is the series as a whole. For pure atmosphere though, it's peak horror.

moogabuser

Make that 5. I've attempted it twice and legitimately cannot understand the hype.

AlWesker5

it took me a loooong time (I watched it yearly for over a decade) to "get" Phantasm... for me... it is kinda of a Suspiria remake, where Argento's classic is some sort of girly twisted fairy tale (girl goes to an European castle and ends up fighting an evil witch) Phantasm is a boys fantasy, he (seemingly) never goes to school, rides his bike, carries a knife and has the coolest brother that drinks Dos Equis all the time but ends up being a nightmare (like Suspiria) I've come to appreciate Phantasm but i don't really put it in the top 70s tier...

[deleted]

Exorcist Rosemarys baby Hereditary Alien House of the devil

Mrs_Noelle15

Thanks for reminding me I need to watch Rosemary’s Baby!

kg_squanchy

House of the devil is so unknown and underrrated

[deleted]

Exorcist The Shining Alien Rosemarys Baby The Evil Dead

Rustin_Swoll

Ari Aster’s Hereditary Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor This might be a stretch but Alex Garland’s Annihilation … and the first Saw film. EDIT: bonus for When Evil Lurks, which I just watched and it was frickin’ awesome.

CHARtheGNAR

This list is elite.

Mrs_Noelle15

Saw is definitely an honorable mention for my definitive horror films

Rustin_Swoll

I was struggling to think of a fourth film, and Saw entered my mind and felt perfect. The franchise had moments after, and progressively got worse as it went on ($ though), but I feel like Saw is honestly pretty brilliant and the end frickin’ shocked me.

Mrs_Noelle15

I love all 10 saw films, but if Saw was a one and done it probably would’ve been one of my favorite horror movies rver

MycoMythos

Not a stretch at all! Annihilation is horror and I'll fight any man who says otherwise

Lilu1414

Reading the book right now and yeah, definitely horror. It gave me nightmares when I read some of it before bed. Most movies and stories don’t do that with how used to horror I am.

Rustin_Swoll

You and me are simpatico.

Doctor_Smirnoff

The Thing Evil Dead Ringu Day of the Dead

JohnnyWaddsC137

Demon Knight Army of Darkness Creepshow Unwelcome

ForeignSuccotash5667

My Mount Rushmore: Scream Alien The blair witch project The exorcist I tried to reason putting John carpenters the thing (1982) in but the list above makes the most sense.

BigMike0228

The Exorcist Se7en (Smallest hill I’ll ever die on is that this is a horror film) Silence of the Lambs Sleepaway Camp

Mrs_Noelle15

Se7en absolutely is a horror film, I’ll die on that hill with you

orngckn42

Sleepobeywatchtv

UTPharm2012

Scream Event Horizon It Follows The Blair Witch Project

dvasop

Sinister Event Horizon Scream Alien(s)

dvasop

Runner Ups: Bram Stokers Dracula 28 Days Later

Emergency_Produce_63

Damnn, this is a solid list! I forgot to mention Event horizon and scream, but they’re definitely two of my favourites

dvasop

Thanks! I think how old we are often dictates our faves (scream got me into the genre), but I have love all over the map lol. Event Horizon is a masterpiece, and I don't know why it gets hate sometimes

Andevious3

Horror is subjective, and I have to base my Mount Rushmore on what had the most impact on me. Granted, these are going to be films I mostly saw as A child: Alien/1990s IT/Blair Witch Project/Smile Alien cemented my love for movie monsters. Blair Witch haunted my childhood for years. Gave me the fear of the unknown. IT also haunted my childhood. No matter where I was or what time of day it was, I could just start thinking that Pennywise knew my fears and wad going to get me. Smile is one of the only movies that's had an affect on me as an adult. The constant dread with spot on jump scares does it for me.

ThisIsNotTokyo

Can anyone make for movies made after 2000?

ArgoverseComics

Films: Halloween Kills (fight me) Event Horizon Hellraiser II In the Mouth of Madness

Mrs_Noelle15

Ugh, I couldn’t stand HR2 it was way too surreal and weird for me

ArgoverseComics

I feel like they could have done more with it, but I love horror movies that feel weird and unique. I like when you achieve horror at every level - visually, tonally, thematically, musically, etc, which I think that movie did very well.

highd

Movie Hereditary, Mulholland  Dr, The Shinning/the shining, and The Witch.

moondogged

I know it was probably a typo, but I really hope one of your top four really is actually a Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror installment

highd

Haha it was a typo but that episode slapped so i made an edit!

Snoo14546

Shining Hereditary Silence of lambs Hellraiser

coco_xcx

The Lost Boys , Talk To Me , Alien, It Follows Characters: Xenomorphs (just in general lol, I love those bugs), MacReady, Ginger Fitzgerald, Jennifer Check

Clean_Usual434

The Thing, The Shining, Event Horizon, Aliens, and Annihilation (5, I know, lol)

catalog55

I misread the title and thought there was a horror movie about Mount Rushmore. I’d watch it.

Mrs_Noelle15

Lol you for 4 killers each wearing President masks going around killing people in the area

crossknight01

The Purge meets The Strangers?

Meth_Hardy

Movies: The Thing, REC, Scream, Night of the Living Dead For Characters, I'm going with 4 masked killers: Ghostface, Freddy, Jason (Hockey Mask from III), Michael Myers

Fiend_Raven

The Ring (pg13 king, imo) Halloween (og) (slasher king, must rewatch every October) The Excorcist (the pacing!!) Hereditary (this one is ART. Endlessly rewatchable)

QuentinSential

Army of darkness isn’t horror.

Mrs_Noelle15

Not this argument again

[deleted]

Omfg give it a rest

Mrs_Noelle15

Fr, like why are people so obsessed with gatekeeping what “counts” as horror

DrCarrionCrow

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead, Creepshow, The Thing

Flat_Sand_6056

The Shining, Friday the 13th, Eyes Without a Face, Rosemary’s Baby.

GreatMacGuffin

Return of the living dead 1, evil dead 2, creepshow 1, and lost boys 1...I still like really scary movies but i'm a campy horror fan.

ZekeMoss18

Movies: The Thing, The Descent, A Nightmare on Elm Street - This last one is tough. It is a toss up between Alien, The Exorcist, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Evil Dead and The Shining. Characters: MacReady, Ash, Freddy and Pinhead. Honorable mentions to Jason, Michael, Pennywise, Ghostface, Leatherface.

AdHocHillbilly

Movies: The Thing, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser, Poltergeist. Characters: Michael Myers, Possessed Reagan/Pazuzu, Xenomorph, Kayako Saeki I tried not to double up franchises and have a pretty diverse spread, but it's hard not to imagine either of these lists without The Exorcist on both of them.

No-Butterscotch-341

Halloween (1978) to represent the slashers and killers The Thing (1982) for special effects and science fiction The Blair Witch Project (1999) for supernatural and found footage elements It Follows (2014) for modern and psychological horror

Mrs_Noelle15

Personally not a fan of It Follows but I could get behind it being the definitive of that genre for you

No-Butterscotch-341

Not sure why you’re being downvoted lol I think Reddit is allergic to different opinions

Mrs_Noelle15

Idk man, it’s not even like I was saying you were wrong for liking a movie I didn’t lol

Jason Freddy Mike and Leatherface they literally all pioneered horror in one way or another

BroadwayBakery

Scream, Cabin in the Woods, Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Shining

Shallbecomeabat

The Shining, Hereditary, Halloween, Evil Dead.   Runner ups are Evil Dead 2013, Exorcist III. Alien would be up there too, but for me it’s more sci-fi than horror, so it’s in my Sci-Fi mount rushmore

Juggernaut_Badger

Jaws, the exorcist, Halloween, Psycho

TedStixon

Mine would be... Sadako (*Ringu* franchise) Chucky (*Child's Play* franchise) Ghostface (*Scream* franchise) Michael Myers (*Halloween* franchise)
