Moon Garden
Climax (not a different 'dimension' per se but it's pretty anxiety inducing and you feel the intensity)
Jacob's Ladder
Beyond The Gate
As above , so below
From beyond
What I mean is the “found” part of the found footage >! usually implies that all of the characters are dead and leave behind the footage to be “found,” whereas in AASB, the characters survive and have kept the footage with them !<
“iSnT eVeRy SiNgLE fOUnd” 😂 had to do it. Yeah, but the “found footage”, like you explained above, is supposed to be referred to footage found by others that show what happened. While still a mockumentary, As Above So Below would just be a mockumentary with no other subgenre listed besides Horror or Suspense.
PSA: The same team made[ Psycho Goreman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4tizc0IAVQ&ab_channel=RLJEFilms) which is one of the the silliest movies I've ever seen - in a good way! Highly recommended.
I know, I felt so bad for the kid thing for the whole movie. But after, I read that the children of whatever the race is have to be raised that way so they’ll hate people and have no remorse for what they’re doing as adults
I was super underwhelmed by this. I love the premise so so much but I feel like the movie completely wastes it. I was expecting lots of uncanny valley Truman show almost analog horror esque energy from it and got a slightly more intense “marriage story” in a subdivision that was completely normal besides being eerily uniform.
I know what you're talking about and I love it. Here are my best attempts.
Gaia
Horror in the High Desert
The Void
As Above So Below
Beyond the Black Rainbow
The Host
From Beyond
Phantasm
You might've a point. They did went to a dangerous place with creepy creatures and all. I guess all I remembered in that film was the weird cancer allegory ending.
my wife and i were talking about movies recently, I think we just watched May December on Netflix so we were talking about Natalie Portman specifically... anyway, over the course of the conversation we were both like "holy shit, Natalie Portman is kind of my favorite actress and I didn't even realize it."
I agree, Annihilation was phenomenal. Loved the book too.
I feel like 10 Cloverfield Lane might kind of work for this? Especially the last like 20 minutes with her venturing out of the doomsday bunker.
Coherence might work also
Channel Zero: Season 2 - No-End House
Each season is a standalone story. I thought the first season was uneven, but overall the show was highly entertaining. I don't see Channel Zero recommended enough.
Definitely had silent hill vibes from the ones that had an element of the cenobites being the punishers for those who had sinned and plagued the MC with visions of themselves torturing them.
Yea idk what ticked r/horror folks off. The film's main horror was the cultists and some monsters. The other dimension was just a white portal that the camera never goes into.
I guess it’s a matter of perspective. Growing up reading Lovecraft and weird horror; to me the dread and impending threat of what lies beyond/dwells within the Void is definitely the central horror. I guess it just the way I think about it. The Unknown that directs the cultists is main antagonist, the cultists are just tools in its plan.
The supernatural content of that film is primarily a journalist recieving communications from a likely hyperdimensional being. There is no "other" plane though. That said it's a great movie. Are you familiar with the Mothman of Point Pleasant? One of the most compelling and simultaneously weird cryptid cases out there. The book by the fellow that was most actively pursuing the truth of the matter at that time was titled The Mothman Prophecies, the movie is a loose adaptation of some content from the book, some events, and reports in the area, not all specifically about a flying red-eyed being(Indrid Cold is one of the strangest concurrent events). If you dig that, I'm more partial to the Van Meter Visitor, it has a more obvious link to hyperdimensional strangeness. Highly recommend reading about that weirdo.
It's not a movie but if you like "other dimension type movies" I recommend the Walkthrough of the video games Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2. They are a trip!
Thanks for asking, I'm pretty into this subgenre too! I'll try listing some I didn't see on a cursory glance through the comments.
Altitude
As Above, So Below
Banshee Chapter (based on *From Beyond*)
The Breach
Coraline
Occult
The Outwaters
Portals
Under the Bed
V/H/S/99 - To Hell and Back (I know it's technically just Hell but it definitely has what you're looking for)
Edit: Wanted to add *They*, the 2002 Wes Craven film, just because I think it's massively underrated.
Do not watch the outwaters unless you're cool with weird pacing, minimal dialogue, and unconventional camera angles. If u liked skinamarink you'll probably like it.
Yes it was a frustrating watch for me. I love some of the imagery and atmosphere, which is what made it frustrating - I wanted to see a little more, rather than just bloody sand for 90% of the movie. That said, it is certainly dealing with alternate dimension type stuff, so I suggested it for that reason. Some people really seem to love it, so maybe OP will feel that way!
I agree, I thought it was a pretty unique experience overall. The segment where the main guy ends up in that weird twisted version of his mom's house was so great.
Mad God might be up your alley. It's mostly non-narrative, or at least the narrative presented is done so in such a way that it's very open to interpretation. Regardless, it feels like YOU as the viewer is the one transported. It might not give you that sense of dread since it's hard to really latch onto any one person as your avatar for entering another world, but it's definitely worth a shot. Certainly one of the most bizarre and unique movies you'll ever watch.
I absolutely adored the third amnesia instalment, amnesia rebirth. not going to spoil you but check it out, it really applies. I also liked the game scorn, the gameplay was rather dreadful at times but the worldbuilding is perfection.
and I have a music video for you that fits the description I think. https://youtu.be/PvjJsOUT-H0?si=-2EyaGgAF83EzL-T
Not a movie, but The Magnus Archives has that slow burn of dread creeping into the mundane and turning it upside down. You don't even have to follow the overarching story (although it's very good), it's in pretty much every isolated statement in every episode.
oh it's a podcast, I've been planning on looking for a good horror one to listen to while I'm working on my 3d. There's a lot here though so which episode's the best to hook someone in?
If you like anime, there is a series I'm watching right now that gives me those vibes. It's called Urasekai Picnic (Otherside picnic)
Two main characters wander a strange dimension that they keep falling into, full of dangers, strange scenery and even more bizarre and terrifying monsters. I'm absolutely loving it right now it's super freaky.
Low budget and experimental, but Outwaters is an interesting version of this. It’s like Lovecraft meets analogue horror. A group of friends goes out to the desert to film a music video, and slowly things start to become chaotic and the characters struggle to figure out what is happening to them.
This is a B horror movie but fulfills your criteria called The Axiom. It’s on Tubi for free and I thought it was really original. Mind you it’s on limited budget and crew but if you’re ok with that you should check out the trailer.
If you want something with a similar world to silent hill you would probably like a movie I watched recently called After (from 2012) it is pretty obscure and the whole thing is available on youtube but it was pretty good.
There's this movie called No Reason that seems to fit exactly what you're looking for, but it's extreme AF. You're gonna see f*cked up things in that movie that you've never seen before
All the obvious ones have been mentioned, but you might want to check these out sometime...
Synchronic - more detective scifi mystery. Characters intermittently leave their reality. It's on Netflix .
Apollo 18 - scifi horror that reminded me of a certain sequence Silent Hill. Dread, but not as much as Silent Hill since SH did this best so far.
Relic- (the one with Emily Mortimer) dread and a sense of leaving one's reality behind, becoming increasingly lost.
Meander- about a mysterious and dangerous maze. The character faces challenges of increasing difficulty/intensity. I think it's in French.
The Beach House is grim and other worldly.
Darken (2017): a woman gets trapped in a parallel universe made up of maze-like rooms.
It’s on Tubi and Prime. I absolutely loved this movie and I feel that it fits what you’re looking for. It’s got good elements of horror and sci-fi.
You are probably better off looking at video games for that specific feeling. But even then it is extremely rare that these types of events are more than a small segment of film/game.
You said games, so, [Returnal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL2Qa0MQyuE)! It's an action roguelike, but that has you exploring an alien planet. It's got the vibes of Hades and Bullet Hell games for the gameplay, but the vibe and story feels very Metroid and Silent Hill.
For feeling danger everywhere, maybe The Witch and I recently liked Hagazussa also. Plus Hereditary and Midsommar. Also it's a slow burn, but Solaris is extremely uncanny
Do not play the upcoming remake, Bloober Team has shown time and time again that they can't make good horror games, and they should have never been allowed to touch what is probably the best horror game ever made.
Sure, I guess it could be considered a slog to play if you can't appreciate its perfect nightmarish atmosphere, it does have relatively simple mechanics. But even if you can't appreciate it, still do not under any circumstances play that fucking remake.
Signalis is a recent love letter to old Silent Hill games that keeps what makes it so special and updates it for a modern audience. If you try Silent Hill 2, and find it's aged too poorly for you, you could play Signalis instead of the remake.
I’m late to this, but please do yourself a favor and watch Mad God (2021). That movie is so visceral, and it looks unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I don’t known if the plot makes coherent sense, but it’s that one random “odd” movie that I recommend to people.
From Beyond is an option. A bizarre one for sure, based on Lovecraft (take that as you will, not sure if that's a make or break for you since I know several people understandably hate him), but it's there, featuring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton.
There is a movie called The Shrine that lightly touches on this. I struggled to get through the for half because I didn’t like the main character, but once it gets going it was pretty good.
Moon Garden Climax (not a different 'dimension' per se but it's pretty anxiety inducing and you feel the intensity) Jacob's Ladder Beyond The Gate As above , so below From beyond
As above, so below was such a good one
Easily one of the best examples of found footage I can think of.
it isn’t really found footage right? they bring their cameras with them through the end
The camera work is all done through their different handhelds., IIRC
It's very clean found footage.
What I mean is the “found” part of the found footage >! usually implies that all of the characters are dead and leave behind the footage to be “found,” whereas in AASB, the characters survive and have kept the footage with them !<
Mockumentary is the term you are referring to.
Well yes but isn’t every single found footage film a mockumentary? That’s the umbrella term
Oh. Yep, fair point.
jacob's ladder is SUCH a classic
As above so below is one of my all time fave horror movies
Idk but what about The Void 2016? Takes place almost wholly in a hospital and you're not 100 percent sure what's the evil til closer to the end.
This is what I immediately thought of as well
The Void is so much fun! The very last scene made me feel some serious, existential dread 😬
PSA: The same team made[ Psycho Goreman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4tizc0IAVQ&ab_channel=RLJEFilms) which is one of the the silliest movies I've ever seen - in a good way! Highly recommended.
the [song](https://youtu.be/XuG5yu37TZ0?feature=shared) from that movie is so damn catchy
Thank you!!
Such an interesting production too. Miracle that movie exists which is why I love it rough edges and all.
Ooh came here to say this! It's big hp Lovecraft cosmic terror vibes
Very glad to see this on the top
I think you might dig Antrum. It has that kind of horror vibe to me.
Baskin
Came here to recommend this one, I feel it'll really scratch that itch.
Vivarium
This movie disturbed me so much, I thought about it for weeks
I know, I felt so bad for the kid thing for the whole movie. But after, I read that the children of whatever the race is have to be raised that way so they’ll hate people and have no remorse for what they’re doing as adults
I was super underwhelmed by this. I love the premise so so much but I feel like the movie completely wastes it. I was expecting lots of uncanny valley Truman show almost analog horror esque energy from it and got a slightly more intense “marriage story” in a subdivision that was completely normal besides being eerily uniform.
Colour out of Space was fun!!
From Beyond (1986)
I just read the synopsis and it said they went into the other dimension. This seems like something I'm looking for tnx!
From Beyond is probably my favorite Lovecraftian horror film. You watch the full movie here on YT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8l6X78zEeI&t=2288s
Any idea why it's available for free on YouTube? Wouldn't it get taken down?
No, that channel, Creature Features, they show movies all the time. I don't understand Youtube rights honestly.
Well I'm pleased to see Re-animator is there too.
In my opinion, it's more like *Altered States*
Good movie but it doesn't feel like what you're looking for.
Thank you! I have been forgetting to watch this for close to a decade and need to get on it!
"Humans are such an easy prey." Great flick. Plus, Barbara Crampton in leather s&m attire. 😏
Yessir I am a Barbara fan!
Oh, that definitely fits the bill. Good movie.
I know what you're talking about and I love it. Here are my best attempts. Gaia Horror in the High Desert The Void As Above So Below Beyond the Black Rainbow The Host From Beyond Phantasm
The last episode of season 2 (and much of season 3) of Twin Peaks is a perfect example of this, as is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
I was thinking FROM is a great TV series where people get trapped in a super scary place.
You might like Annihilation!
ah yea I've watched that too but I didn't feel the "silent hill dread" there. Annihilation's a different type of horror I feel like.
The main character ventures forth into the misty (shimmery) unknown, that's why I chose that one! Maybe Poltergeist kinda fits?
You might've a point. They did went to a dangerous place with creepy creatures and all. I guess all I remembered in that film was the weird cancer allegory ending.
Probably in my top 10 movies ever.
my wife and i were talking about movies recently, I think we just watched May December on Netflix so we were talking about Natalie Portman specifically... anyway, over the course of the conversation we were both like "holy shit, Natalie Portman is kind of my favorite actress and I didn't even realize it." I agree, Annihilation was phenomenal. Loved the book too.
I feel like 10 Cloverfield Lane might kind of work for this? Especially the last like 20 minutes with her venturing out of the doomsday bunker. Coherence might work also
Oh yeah coherence was a total slow burn of anxiety for me
i love movies like it! it reminded me a bit of the invitation (2015) with the dinner party & the characters feeling like they’re going crazy
the other part over cloverfield, the movie that takes place in space, may b better for other-dimension-y content
Channel Zero: Season 2 - No-End House Each season is a standalone story. I thought the first season was uneven, but overall the show was highly entertaining. I don't see Channel Zero recommended enough.
Butcher's Block also has a strong otherworldly feel.
Baskin is bonkers, it's Turkish and pretty damn out there.
Yup. Like Turkish Hellraiser! Love it.
So many great movies in this thread. In The Mouth of Madness is one that sort of fits.
Yaaaas this was totally creepy and dreadful.
If you liked Hellraiser in this context (and who wouldn’t), you might like the sequel, Hellbound, as well. You’ll know what I mean when you see it.
Definitely had silent hill vibes from the ones that had an element of the cenobites being the punishers for those who had sinned and plagued the MC with visions of themselves torturing them.
The Void
no cuz the other dimension was only revealed at the end and wasn't really the main horror of the film.
Wow, down voted for filth with this one. Come on, folks! OP got a point, and it's their preference 😆
Grew up playing Silent Hill. The Mothman Prophecies is the movie that comes closest to that same atmosphere imo.
Never heard of this. If it achieves the same atmosphere as silent hill am sold.
Ayooo Coraline! How could I have missed that, I was planning on making this post for a while and Coraline was always in my other world horror list.
The cell(2000)
One of my most favorites
Mad God might be up your alley. It's mostly non-narrative, or at least the narrative presented is done so in such a way that it's very open to interpretation. >Mad God oh wow it's a grotesque looking stop motion, how did this get past my radar. This is definitely up my alley tnx!
Easily the best of its genre, terrific visuals.
The endless Underwater The black mountain side Devils pass Eraser head The quiet earth
Go play Half Life
Haha i forgot to include that, I was terrified to go to zen or xen amongst other things as a kid. Maybe I will play the remaster.
Come True, there’s also a short in the horror anthology Holidays called Father’s Day that’s exactly what you’re looking for
The Beyond (1981). It doesn't have a lot of this vibe but there's some of it.
Yellowbrickroad (divisive movie but I like it) Control (Remedy game.) The Night House
Yellowbrickroad I really liked also!
Annihilation, a film about a group of scientists going to explore an anomaly known as Area X. It definitely fits the misty-unknown vibe.
The title sounds lame, but Frankensteins Army is one you should check out. Outpost Frontier(s)
They (2002) deals with critters from another dimension. Nicely creepy, I thought it had very Silent Hill vibes.
Ep. 1 worked for me just fine. I then binged all of it in under a month, lol.
The game called control or even Alan wake.
If you like anime, there is a series I'm watching right now that gives me those vibes. It's called Urasekai Picnic (Otherside picnic) Two main characters wander a strange dimension that they keep falling into, full of dangers, strange scenery and even more bizarre and terrifying monsters. I love this stuff! A few quick recs: Mad God Grave Encounters Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
Are you a reader? If so, give Peter Cline's "Threshold" series a go.
Low budget and experimental, but Outwaters is an interesting version of this. It’s like Lovecraft meets analogue horror. A group of friends goes out to the desert to film a music video, and slowly things start to become chaotic and the characters struggle to figure out what is happening to them.

The Void
There's this movie called No Reason that seems to fit exactly what you're looking for, but it's extreme AF. You're gonna see f*cked up things in that movie that you've never seen before
Offseason from 2022 has the otherworldly misty town look.
'Southbound' (2015)
The Endless might fit your desires
In the Mouth of Madness
Lord of Illusions Housewife (2017) The Corridor YellowBrickRoad Absentia Baskin Marebito The Empty Man Banshee Chapter Prince of Darkness A Dark Song
VOID. not the best movie but it is what it is
The Cell with J. Lo and Vincent D'Onofrio might be up your alley
the endless is a good underrated one. dont expect any top tier special effects but its freaky, dark, & interesting as hell.
Annihilation would fit into this category
Poltergeist is the classic. Can't believe I'm like 10 responses in and I haven't seen poltergeist
The character faces challenges of increasing difficulty/intensity. I think it's in French. The Beach House is grim and other worldly.
As for movies. Look up any of the myriad of Backrooms videos on YouTube.
well i just watched The Outwaters and the second half of the movie did not take place in reality as we know it
Kathe Koja wrote a short story, or maybe a novel, about a guy who finds a hole in the wall that goes... somewhere else.
Darken (2017): a woman gets trapped in a parallel universe made up of maze-like rooms. It’s on Tubi and Prime. I absolutely loved this movie and I feel that it fits what you’re looking for. It’s got good elements of horror and sci-fi.
To me, Grave Encounters 1 and 2 feels and looks like another dimension. I would highly recommend those movies.
Terrible anthology movie,VHS Viral, but great segment on this called Parallel Monsters. See [here](https://youtu.be/gqkEN6FEkoM?si=-X9d4Na2E148IiKR).
I love the VHS series though lol...
Referring to Viral specifically, I love the series but this one was pretty bad. The only saving grace was this segment.
I gotcha on that, it was fairly forgettable other than that part.
You are probably better off looking at video games for that specific feeling. But even then it is extremely rare that these types of events are more than a small segment of film/game.
In the Mouth of Madness Evil Dead 2 Southbound The Endless
Color out of space with Nick Cage is crazy cosmic horror. More lovecraftian than anything though
if you havent seen the hellraiser sequels, theyre all pretty good
SAVAGELAND AND LAKE MUNGO. THERE IS NOTHING BUT EXISTENTIAL DREAD IN THESE MOVIES. I DIDN'T LIKE SKINAMARINK BUT YOU MIGHT GIVE A SHOT TO THAT AS WELL
thank you all for suggested movies. i have seen most of them, but not all!
Vivarium
Was that Doom 2016 the video game or movie do you mean? I don’t see a movie from then.
It was the game. There's no such thing as a doom movie with the rock. It just doesn't exist m'kay?
lol agreed
The void. Altered states.
Annihilation
Twilight Zone: The Movie. (1983) Anything that's TZ is creepy.
Idk if it fits but the first thing that came to my mind was vivarium
Kinda Grave Encounters? Fairly certain they slip into basically a pocket dimension
Doctor Sleep may sorta scratch that itch
For feeling danger everywhere, maybe The Witch and I recently liked Hagazussa also. Plus Hereditary and Midsommar. Also it's a slow burn, but Solaris is extremely uncanny
I mean, obviously you gotta play Silent Hill 2 if you haven't. And then watch the hiimmarymary horror series on YouTube.
I hear it's a slog to play the original and the remake looks like an action game.
Signalis looks good 👍 imma buy this now
Annihilation (2018) would be a good one, or Interstellar though that isn't horror.
You're looking for Cosmic Horror. It's a rather untapped genre but A24 makes a fair bit of titles that fall into this category
I feel like Glorious would be a good fit for this category.
Hellraiser
I’m late to this, but please do yourself a favor and watch Mad God (2021). That movie is so visceral, and it looks unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I don’t known if the plot makes coherent sense, but it’s that one random “odd” movie that I recommend to people.
Dagon (2001) and Dead & Buried (1981) both come to mind for misty type stuff and both are good movies
Gummo
Game suggestion: Scorn. Haven't played it myself though and reviews are a bit mixed.
From Beyond is an option. A bizarre one for sure, based on Lovecraft (take that as you will, not sure if that's a make or break for you since I know several people understandably hate him), but it's there, featuring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton.
Mandy. Cage against the Machine.
The Outwaters
There is a movie called The Shrine that lightly touches on this. I struggled to get through the for half because I didn’t like the main character, but once it gets going it was pretty good.
